The National Pest M anagement Assoc iation (NPM A) reminds homeow ners that the potential for pest infestations increases during the cold months of the year as pests seek shelter -- most often in people’s homes.

House mice nest in dark, secluded attics and basements. In addition to carrying diseases and bacteria, causing indoor allergies and asthma attacks, they can also chew through dryw all and w ires, increasing the risk of electrical fires.

Keep house mice from entering the house by sealing outside cracks and holes. It’s also important to keep basements and attics dry and clutter free to prevent nesting spots.

Norw ay rats nest in basements, piles of debris and other undisturbed materials. They can gnaw through almost anything to obtain food and w ater. Like house mice, Norw ay rats also carry diseases and pose a risk of house fires.

Fill any gaps or c rac ks on the outside of the home, and eliminate sourc es of moisture in c raw l spaces and basements.

Raccoons often climb through chimneys or attics in search of a denning site, posing danger to humans. Not only can raccoons attack if they feel threatened w hile trapped indoors, but they are also a major host of rabies in the U.S. To repel raccoons, store w aste cans in sealed areas, or use an animalproof lid. Check the outside of your home for access points, repair loose siding or shingles, and use a mesh cover or cap for your chimney.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE Upgrade walkways. Though it’s more expensive than adding planters and planting perennials, upgrading old and cracked walkways is a great way to give a property a whole new look. According to the renovation experts at HomeAdvisor, homeowners typically pay between $6 and $12 per square foot for new concrete walkway installation. Homeowners working on a budget can target spots where walkways have already cracked and fix those areas first before continuing the project piecemeal until all the old walkways have been replaced.

Smaller homes: Home sizes in the United States steadily increased for decades, eventually leading to an average of 2,453 square feet in 2014, according to U.S. Census figures. However, Realtor.com reported in 2015 that new construction homes have already begun to shrink by 40 square feet. There seems to be a slight trend toward more modest homes as people consider affordability and maintenance on larger properties. The National Association of Home Builders states buyers are now looking for smaller, more livable homes with flexible floor plans, energy-efficient appliances and plenty of storage space.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE REPLACING WINDOWS Moisture problems indicate windows need to be replaced. Condensation that shows up as fogging between double-pane windows or on the inside of windows indicates that the windows are starting to fail. If installing a vapor barrier in the basement or crawl space, ventilating properly when showering or cooking, or using a dehumidifier indoors does not remedy the situation, it might be time to replace windows.

DID YOU KNOW? A report published in the Lancet in 2012 suggests that a lack of exercise now causes as many deaths across the globe as smoking. A team of 33 researchers representing centers around the world contributed to the study. DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter and her friend went to a concert and had to climb stairs. They ended up walking about 2.5 miles in total. After returning home, my daughter had severe pain in both of her feet and was unable to stand or walk on them. She said it felt like someone was crushing them.

The pain did not get better, so she went to the emergency room a few days later. A doctor there performed an X-ray and said that the pain was due to bunions, although they did not even look at her feet. She also saw a foot specialist who told her that the diagnosis was neuropathy of the feet and recommended Neurontin for pain. He asked her if she has diabetes, but she does not. They told my daughter that she will have to live in pain for the rest of her life.

The doctor recommended getting some tests done on her nerves at the hospital, but she doesn’t have money to pay for these tests. What can be done to help her? How is it possible that the pain started so suddenly? She is in constant pain and is unable to walk. -- K.B. ANSWER: “Neuropathy” is not a diagnosis; it’s a name for a diverse group of diseases that cause damage to the nerves, specifically signifying the nerves in the brain and spinal cord or those outside of them.

The recommendation of getting nerve testing done is correct. This does sound like neuropathy from the little bit of information I have, although neuropathies do not typically begin with exercise the way you described. I have seen several cases where muscles have become terribly inflamed and even break down after a period of unusually strenuous exertion (this usually gets better with time), but I would have expected the doctors to make that diagnosis.

There is a compressive neuropathy in the foot (tarsal tunnel syndrome) where the nerve is damaged by pressure from muscles, bones and connective tissue, but this happening to both feet at the same time would be surprising. Metabolic neuropathies, like B12 deficiency, cause symptoms on both sides but do not begin suddenly. I’d be worried about her lower spine.

Byron-Bergen 6th Graders Explore Local Heritage with the RBTL Annie Landmark Project

yron-Bergen 6th grade English classes participated in the Rochester Broadway Theater League Arts Partners Program, connecting schools to the RBTL with opportunities to see a live musical while making connections in the classroom to expand students’ understanding of themes such as musical plot and character experiences.

This season, in conjunction with the production of Annie at the RBTL, the Arts Partners suggested the Annie Landmark project.

Students researched local landmarks, exploring their community as Annie explores the landmarks of New York City. According to English teacher, Alyson Tardy, students chose a landmark, researched its history and why it is unique and important for the community, wrote a research report about their findings, and crafted a visual representation of the landmark to share with the school community.

Some landmarks chosen were LeRoy’s Jell-O Museum, Rochester’s Public Market, the Kodak building, the underground railroad spaces across the city, Six Flags, Seneca Park Zoo, Genesee Country Village & Museum, Susan B Anthony House, and even Niagara Falls. The class learned and shared about so much local history and culture in this project.

But besides that, Tardy says the project was an incredible hit, allowing students to dive into authentic research, honing skills in a real-life, actionable kind of way.

For many of the students, the field trip to see Annie the Musical at the RBTL’s Auditorium Theater in Rochester was their first experience seeing a live show, so Tardy found the field trip to be such a memorable opportunity. “Working with Arts Partners has been an amazing experience to help my students build a greater appreciation for the performing arts,” she says. Holly Valentine, Education Coordinator at RBTL, helped with lesson materials and coordinating the field trip, and Tardy says the partnership was extremely rewarding for all.

Along with the landmarks and their connections to the area, Tardy says students enjoyed learning about iconic local historical figures such as Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, known well beyond Rochester.

Tardy says she loved “allowing our students to have the opportunity to research and learn more about local landmarks in our area that they possibly have never had the chance to visit or explore. It’s important for me to seek opportunities to help my students step outside of the four walls of our classroom to learn about the unique and diverse people and places around us.”

She says the students really enjoyed exploring local landmarks and sharing their findings with the research report and landmark mural showing the array of key places and people. Tardy says one of her favorite moments of this project was watching students create and design the mural together, pulling together the excitement and mood of the season with a snowy background that allowed the landmarks to pop.
