Thanksgiving Dinner Thanks I wish to praise the fantastic job the Dansville Rotary Club did with their Thanksgiving Dinner Program! I was a happy recipient of one of their delicious dinners, and it REALLY was delicious! My dinner arrived nicely HOT and was arranged beautifully. You really made my day!

Thank you all, and I hope your Thanksgiving Day was as special as mine! ~ A senior citizen in Dansville Tribute to a Kind Neighbor Today Donna Cochrane from Honeoye came to pick up items for a Sunday school service project a mutual friend is leading, and mentioned that a fall earlier in the day landed the lady at urgent care with broken bones in her hand. Donna had already picked up our friend’s prescriptions and was likely on her way to provide dinner as well. This kindness reminded me of the many times Donna has recognized and quietly provided for people in the community. After a long career in the classroom, she is especially attuned to helping children in need - and I only know of the few I have helped her accomplish. She is a shining example of living the Golden Rule, and I am blessed to call her my friend.

Business Attitudes I tried to purchase a product locally and have it installed. The item was not in stock and it would take a couple weeks to have them order my particular item.

I went online and ordered it, and it came in 3 days. Went to have it installed for just an installation fee and got an attitude for not purchasing it from them.

Waiting a couple weeks or taking a substitute was not what I wanted.

My suggestion is to call them first of your intentions; if you get an attitude, go elsewhere.

No one cares about us We senior citizens are lonesome and left alone. Holidays are very depressing.

Some of us are handicap in nursing homes. In today’s society, our kids, family, and supposed friends always say, “If you need us, call.” Well, this isn’t the case.

Some of us need outside help: leaves to rake, a quick roof job... I could go on and on. All of today’s generations don’t care. The generations have to remember we raised them, put them through college, but they don’t think of all this. Why can’t you help us? Remember, we are still alive. Wake up, children, someday you will regret this and say “I wish Mom and Dad were here.” Too late.

People in today’s society need to wake up and help each other like in the olden days. Where did the good old days go besides down the tube?

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • 8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf • 2 cups half-and-half • 4 egg yolks • 3 tablespoons light brown sugar • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1/2 cup sour cream • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar • 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) 1. Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter.

3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly.

When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed.

4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.

5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream.

Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half.

Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

Windshields are made from tempered glass, which is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to normal glass. While relatively strong for a pieces of glass, windshields are not impervious to damage. All it takes is a single rock or piece of road debris to be kicked up from the roadway and hit the windshield to cause a problem.

Every day, motorists encounter pebbles or other small missiles that bounce up from the road and come in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with no problem, but under high speeds, debris can cause chips, dings, and even cracks in the windshield.

Cracks easily spread from road vibration and heat and can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your car’s windshield is cracked and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of injury. In addition, police officers can write tickets if windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to repair damaged windshields promptly.

Drivers may be able to repair small dings themselves with a do-it-yourself windshield kit available at automotive retailers. If a crack is less than six to 12 inches long, it can probably be repaired as well. However, more significant damage will require that the entire windshield be replaced.

Christine and Clay Beeman Honor Their Son’s Memory with the Willie Bee Foundation

T

he Willie Bee Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charitable organization founded in 2017 to benefit local families with a child facing a life-threatening illness. The Willie Bee Foundation was founded in memory of Will Beeman, who lost his life at just under two years old after a courageous battle with AT/RT, an aggressive brain tumor. He fought for almost twenty months, enduring numerous surgeries, six rounds of high dose chemotherapy with stem cell recovery, and thirty proton beam radiation treatments.

Will’s parents, Christine and Clay, were forever altered from the devastating experience. Christine, an English teacher at Churchville-Chili High School, says, “I became aware of a world I didn’t know existed before, and I watched my child show resilience, strength, courage, and happiness in the face of a devastating diagnosis.” Clay, an electrician at Billitier Electric adds that “As a father you want to provide for your family and keep your children safe. You are supposed to be the protector.

To watch your child suffer and not be able to do anything to fix it forever changes you.”

The Beemans and their friends and family created the Willie Bee Foundation to help support local families going through what they experienced. They explain, “Our love for Will is a love without end, and we miss him more than words could ever say. Throughout Will’s illness we experienced the difference that caring, compassionate, and empathetic individuals can make in a family’s life when they are facing the unthinkable.”

Tricia Saltzberg, Will’s aunt and Christine’s sister, secretary of the Willie Bee Foundation, says, “Will has inspired so much generosity within friends and family,” and she hopes to honor him as she and the foundation “help channel the unending grief to continuous love.”

The Foundation’s Creative Director, Chelsea Carl, says she will “always carry Willie Bee with [her] and remind the world to bee strong, bee kind, and bee courageous.”

The Foundation’s mission is to make a difference one family at a time. By helping families with monetary, medical, and social support services they may not otherwise have access to, “We can show them that WE care and that they are not alone.” Clay explains, “This foundation [allows] Will to not be forgotten and for something positive to come out of a heartbreaking and devastating situation. We are so grateful for all the support we received on this long journey and hope to make a difference in other families’ lives in Will’s memory.”

The Willie Bee Foundation helps ease family burdens and helps the families create cherished moments. They listen carefully to families’ needs and offer tailored support, such as gifting iPad packages for children and their siblings during extended hospital stays, comfort care packages for caregivers, or end-of-life comfort care items. Willie Bee collaborates with Splatters Studio in Spencerport to gift families keepsakes. The foundation may arrange wheelchair-accessible van rentals, may cover travel costs for out-of-area treatments, and may grant families “mini-wishes.”

They may coordinate winter plowing, summer lawn care, or house cleaning services so the families have one less thing to worry about. Catered meals throughout the year, holiday gifts and meals, and memberships to zoos, museums, and amusement parks bring joy during families’ difficult times. The Willie Bee Foundation may send families on special trips or to summer cottage rentals to provide treasured family time. Gift cards for groceries and restaurants ease family stress.

The Beemans and the Willie Bee Foundation say, “It is our sincere honor and privilege to provide what we do for families.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m an 88-year-old female who has been diagnosed with ventricular fibrillation (VFib). My cardiac electrophysiologist, who implanted a conventional pacemaker four years ago, has noticed several episodes of VFib (up to 30 seconds, read via a bedside monitor). They recommend replacing the current pacemaker with a combo pacemaker and defibrillator. I wonder about the history/success of this device. -- C.R. ANSWER: Most people have heard about atrial fibrillation (AFib), which is a common, chaotic electrical condition of the top chambers of the heart. Without regular electrical input from the atria to the ventricles, the ventricles beat irregularly, but blood flow from the heart still remains adequate. By contrast, VFib is a chaotic movement of the lower chambers, and the heart does not pump blood during VFib. Within a short time, 10 to 30 seconds at most, the brain will not have enough oxygen to keep you conscious. Unless VFib is rapidly treated or stops by itself (which is rare, but happened to you), VFib is fatal.

A survivor of VFib definitely benefits from an automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD). Nowadays, they also have the ability to act as a pacemaker; they recognize and immediately provide a shock during episodes of VFib. AICDs first became available when I was in medical school during the 1980s, but current models are a huge improvement since they are smaller and last longer. The evidence is strong that people at a high risk for a “malignant” arrythmia like VFib live longer with an AICD than those who are only treated with anti-arrhythmic drugs. The rate of sudden cardiac death is reduced by about 50%. You are very lucky and should get this recommended device as soon as possible. They are common and effective. ***

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF BEING IN NATURE Nature and overall well-being - Given the aforementioned health benefits related to spending time in nature, it’s easy for even non-scientists to conclude that being outdoors has a profound impact on overall well-being. But non-scientists can rest assured that recent research has confirmed such conclusions. A 2019 study published in the journal Scientific Reports found that individuals who spent at least 120 minutes a week in nature were significantly more likely to report good health and psychological well-being than those who spent less time outdoors. Though the authors of the study cautioned that the exposure-response relationship was under-researched, and therefore likely needed to be studied more extensively, in the meantime individuals, after a consultation with their physicians and confirmation that it’s safe to get out more often, can aspire to spend at least 120 minutes in nature each week. The results may speak for themselves.

Should an owner punish puppy after accident?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I bought a puppy a few weeks ago who was between 2 to 3 months old. Star is wonderful, and housetraining has been OK. But yesterday, he pooed in the hallway while we were out. My boyfriend says I need to push his nose into the mess and punish him. I don’t think that’s the right way to train a puppy. What do you think? -- Daria in St. Louis, Missouri DEAR DARIA: Your instinct is spot on, and you should trust it more. That’s the wrong way to train a puppy. It’s aggressive, negative and doesn’t teach the puppy anything -- except to be afraid.

Young puppies are learning machines, picking up habits quickly -- both good and bad. They need to be constantly supervised to keep them safe and to correct them (not punish them) on the spot so they learn what they can and can’t do in the household.

When they’re not supervised, I recommend placing them in a properly sized kennel crate. Think of it as a den for your puppy, a safe spot. Again, not a place to punish him.

Furthermore, puppies need to pee and poo more frequently than adult dogs -- about four times daily at Star’s age, but sometimes more. It’s up to you to make sure their elimination schedule is adequate and that you are there to supervise them.

Star couldn’t wait for you to get home, so he went in the hallway. That’s on you, not on Star.
