HOME FIRE RISKS INCREASE AS WEATHER COOLS (NAPSI)—The fall and winter seasons bring cooler temperatures, holidays, and images of cozy nights by the fireplace.

Yet the change in seasons also comes with the chance of severe weather and an increase in fire risks. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more home fires occur in winter than in any other season.

“Holiday decorations, space heaters, generators, and fireplaces all present fire hazards if not properly used and maintained,” said Steve Hirsch, chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council.

“Residents should be aware of the dangers and take the steps to make sure their families and homes are protected.”

Follow these tips to minimize home fire and safety risks: • Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home.

Test monthly to ensure they work.

• Install carbon monoxide alarms and test them at least once a month.

• Know where the gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are and how to use them.

• Place fire extinguishers in the kitchen, garage, and living room, and make sure all household members know how to use them.

• Develop a home fire escape plan and practice it with the entire family.

• Keep portable generators outside and away from the home.

• Install a screen in front of each fireplace or wood stove. Store cooled ashes in a metal container outside the home.

• Have chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned every year.

• Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, or other heat source.

D

avid Buckel was an environmentalist, an LGBTQ advocate, and an attorney. He started his life in Batavia. He ended it in 2018 in New York City to draw attention to the plight of the Earth at a time when it seems so many people are focused on other things.

David was born in Batavia on June 13, 1957, the son of an agricultural consultant and a florist. He was a bright student. At Batavia High School, where he graduated from in 1975, he was a member of the National Honor Society and voted the boy Most Likely to Succeed by his classmates. He participated in varsity cross-country, track, and tennis.

David went on to college at the University of Rochester, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1980. After graduation, he worked as an attendant caring for in-home hospice patients. After earning a Juris Doctorate degree in 1987 from Cornell University Law School, David began his career as an attorney. While living in Rochester, David was introduced by friends to a man named Terry Kaelber. They hit it off, became a couple, and moved to New York City.

Inspired by his earlier hospice work, David began his career at Legal Aid, assisting those in need of legal help but who otherwise couldn’t afford it.

In 1995, David began working for Lambda Legal, which helped LGBT (Q was added to the initialism starting in 1996) youth, and he became a director of the organization’s marriage project.

During his tenure at Lambda Legal, David was part of the counsel responsible for two big victories: In 1996, the court ruling in Nabozny v.

Podlesny established a legal precedent to protect LGBTQ students from being bullied in all school systems, and in 2001, David was one of the attorneys for JoAnn Brandon, who won a lawsuit in Nebraska against a local sheriff for failing to protect her transgender child who was raped and murdered in 1993.

In 2008, David retired from Lambda Legal to devote his time and energy to helping preserve the environment. He became an expert in composting and the reuse of organic garbage. He spent several years interning at Red Hook’s Columbia Street Farm in Brooklyn, where he learned the intricacies of composting peoples’ kitchen waste into fertilizer to grow more food. Red Hook had been built on old baseball diamonds to become the biggest urban farm in the United States.

Eventually, David applied his talent for organizing and planning to become the director of the Brooklyn operation. With the assistance of volunteers, Red Hook processed 225 tons of compost every year. David cultivated his workforce of volunteers as well as he did the organic material, and he was respected, even beloved, by them. Several workers said he changed their lives.

In early 2018, David emailed his assistant at Red Hook with details on everything to do in case of his absence. He also labeled everything at the site, equipment, tools, and supplies. His assistant asked him if he was thinking of retiring, but he assured him he was not.

Then, before dawn on the morning of April 14th, David Buckel left his Brooklyn home and headed to a nearby park.

He told no one he was leaving. He stopped at a patch of grass off the walkway and apparently built a small wall of earth around himself. He sent an email to the media detailing what he was about to do, poured a flammable substance on himself, and lit it on fire.

Within a minute or two, David was dead.

The obvious reaction was shock and sadness. His family, friends, coworkers, former colleagues, and former classmates were bewildered.

They couldn’t believe that a quiet, gentle, private man who cared so deeply for others would choose such a public way to end his life. He hadn’t even said goodbye to his loved ones.

David’s final email stated: “My early death by fossil fuel reflects what we are doing to ourselves.” No one will ever completely understand why he chose to make a statement and end his life in such a horrific way. But hopefully, people, including Batavians from the community where he grew up, will remember him for the contributions he made to the world and as the good, kind, helpful person he was.

As he developed his passion for tending to the environment, David pursued a parallel interest in Buddhism, with its tenets of inner peace and caring for others. Buddhist protest methods likely contributed to his untimely end.

W henever possible, rinse off salt and grime so it does not dry on the car and gradually w ear aw ay at the paint. STAY SAFE WHEN SELLING YOUR CAR Millions of people across the globe sell their used vehicles each year, and many of those sales go smoothly. But selling to strangers carries some risk, and sellers must consider their safety when putting their vehicles up for sale.

Arrange to meet prospective buyers in public. While it can be inconvenient to drive to a public place each time a prospective buyer expresses interest in your vehicle, sacrificing convenience for security is worth the extra effort. Many people would not invite strangers to their homes under typical circumstances, so it makes no sense to do so when selling a vehicle. If possible, invite buyers to meet you in the parking lot of your office. Or if the car you’re selling is not the car you drive to work each day, then arrange to meet with buyers in a mall or grocery store parking lot.

Meet buyers with a buddy in tow. There’s safety in numbers, so bring a friend or family member along when meeting prospective buyers. Many buyers won’t pose a threat to sellers, but some may be criminals looking to steal a vehicle or cause harm to sellers who are complete strangers.

Criminals are less likely to attack or take advantage of two or more people than one person. And should anything go wrong with a sale, having a witness around to back up your version of sale terms cannot hurt.

Let prospective buyers know you want to see some identification. When prospective buyers respond to your ad, let them know you will want to see some valid photo identification before you allow them to take the car for a test drive. Letting prospective buyers know this in advance of meeting them can prevent an awkward, potentially confrontational situation when you meet in person.

Don’t be afraid to turn away buyers who seem suspicious. While your goal might be to sell your vehicle as quickly as possible, don’t hesitate to turn away prospective buyers who make you feel uneasy. If they insist on seeing the vehicle, hang up the phone after informing them you intend to contact the authorities.

Caledonia • 585-538-2490 donfoxhvac@yahoo.com MORCILLA CON SETAS (BLOOD SAUSAGE WITH MUSHROOMS, SPRING PEAS AND MINT OIL) Serves 4 1 pound morcilla blood sausage 1 pound mushrooms, sliced 2 tablespoons olive oil 4 cloves garlic, slivered Salt and pepper to taste 2 tablespoons white wine 1 cup shelled spring peas 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint 2 tablespoons mint oil Mint Oil 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 cup chopped mint Pinch of salt Cut the blood sausage into 12 slices. Sauté the mushrooms in olive oil with garlic, salt and pepper for 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook for 2 more minutes. Boil the peas for 2 minutes and drain. When mushrooms are done, remove from heat and stir in the peas.

In a cast-iron skillet, sear the morcilla in a dry pan for 2 minutes per side.

Arrange the slices of morcilla down the middle of a platter. Surround with mushroom/pea mixture and drizzle the plate with the mint oil.

For the mint oil: In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat olive oil to warm. Remove from heat and add the mint and a small pinch of salt. Allow to rest for 1 hour. Drain through a sieve. Reserve extra mint oil for other uses, such as vinaigrette.

Though many plants are self-pollinating and others are pollinated by the wind or water, many others rely on insects and animals to become pollinated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and small mammals all can work as pollinators. Examples of crops pollinated by pollinators include apples, squash and almonds. Animals and insects help pollinate more than 75 percent of the world’s flowering plants, and nearly 75 percent of all crops, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Seasonal [Local Bridge] is BS Why is the [local bridge] closed in the Summer? It makes it pretty tough to ride a bike between [local town] and [local town]! Also, why didn’t they make the thing 20 feet higher than it is? Seems like they could have done a lot better job with that bridge than they did!

Would it really be so tough to change the schedule to let people get across in September, October, and April?

We need authority to step up I work at a store in my local town and in my dept. we had a bullying situation.

This person tried to ignore the individuals who would harass them, made rude comments or just blatantly gave dirty looks just to get them going. It was horrible to see them stressed or in tears because of this unnecessary drama.

This person went to the two different managers to tell them what was going on. Their response was “Just ignore it” or “I’m not a HS Principal, just figure out a way to deal with it.” ARE YOU KIDDING ME? When we first start we have to watch videos on harassment and bullying and afterwards we need to sign a paper stating that we watched it.

The video clearly states that if you are experiencing uncomfortable situations like this, the person to go to was your manager. And they have the audacity to tell them to just ignore it? Do your job as a manager and help protect the employees you’re supposed to oversee and help keep protected from situations like this!

DEAR DR. ROACH: Please explain Hashimoto’s disease. I have heard that it is rare, but two colleagues have recently been diagnosed. We all work in a very high-stress field. -- J.H. ANSWER: Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is not at all a rare disease. It occurs in up to 10% of the population and much more frequently in women than men.

Although people can be diagnosed at a young age, it is more common at older ages. It is caused by an autoimmune reaction to different parts of the thyroid, with thyroglobulin and thyroid peroxidase antibodies commonly found. TSH receptor antibodies are found on occasion.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis most commonly causes low thyroid levels, although there may be a period of time early in the disease where thyroid levels are high. Not everybody with antibodies will develop low thyroid levels. The thyroid is sometimes enlarged, but a careful exam will usually show that the gland is firm, showing that immune cells have infiltrated the gland.

Treatment of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis involves replacing the thyroid hormone that the gland can no longer make. The dose depends on body size to a certain extent, but needs to be adjusted based on lab results.

Most people are treated with levothyroxine, also called T4, which is the primary hormone made by the thyroid.

T4 is converted to T3 (also called triiodothyronine, the active form of the hormone) in various tissues outside the thyroid. T3 only stays in the body for a short while before it is destroyed, so a once-daily treatment with T4, which lasts longer, allows the body to convert T4 to T3.

Most people do very well with T4 treatment. A minority of people cannot efficiently make the active T3 form, in which case-combination treatment can be considered.

Unfortunately, T3 must be dosed twice daily.

It is thought that stress hormones play a role, since stress does seem to increase the risk of developing an autoimmune thyroid disease like Hashimoto’s. ***

DID YOU KNOW? The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs estimates that around eight million adults in the United States experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a given year. Women experience PTSD at a much greater rate than men. Estimates from the USDVA indicate that 10 percent of women and 4 percent of men are affected

by PTSD. Instances of PTSD are similarly prevalent in Canada, where the Canadian Psychological Association estimates that around 8 percent of Canadians who experience a traumatic event develop PTSD. Though no one is immune to PTSD, rates of the disorder among combat veterans are significantly higher than the rates among the general population. USDVA reports that one study of 1,938 veterans found that the prevalence rate among Gulf War veterans was around 14 percent, while an older study from the American Psychological Association found that about 30 percent of Vietnam War veterans had PTSD in their lifetime.

HOW DOES ACID-REFLUX AFFECT ORAL HEALTH? Heartburn, acid indigestion, and acid reflux happen when stomach acid leaks up the esophagus and into the mouth.

When this happens two or more times a week, it is considered a condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Over time, stomach acid erodes tooth enamel and begins to dissolve tooth surfaces. People who suffer from GERD need to take extra precautions with their oral health. Refrain from brushing your teeth right after a reflux episode, as the acid weakens teeth and makes them susceptible to damage from brushing.

Instead, rinse your mouth with water or a water and baking soda solution, which neutralizes acid and prevents further damage. Additionally, chewing sugar-free gum promotes extra saliva production, which lowers oral acid levels.

Frances Mae (Rogers) “Fran” Morey January 20, 2024 CALEDONIA, N.Y. – A bright light has gone out on Church Street. She was a well-known resident in this town, from her teaching days to her daily walk around Caledonia, always with a smile. Frances Mae (Rogers) “Fran” Morey passed away on January 20, 2024, at The Episcopal Church Home in Rochester after years of suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. She was kind, feisty, witty, enthusiastic, and full of boundless curiosity as well as being a traditionalist, dedicated to her family.

Fran was born in the parlor on April 27, 1935, to Mildred Mae (Huff ) Rogers and Francis Carson Rogers, “Carson” in Nottingham Township, Harrison County, Ohio. Raised on a farm with siblings, Harold and Mary, she could drive a tractor and, at the age of 12, drive a car. She also got all A’s. Her education began at Ourant’s School, a one-room schoolhouse, then to Barrett’s Schoolhouse (2 rooms) from 2nd-8th grade. She was the Valedictorian at Cadiz High School. Fran attended Ohio University in 1951, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English. She was also the Women’s Vice-President her senior year.

She met James Newman Morey at college, and they married a few years later in Perry, New York. After living in North Carolina and Ohio, they finally settled in Caledonia with their three children, Allison, David and John. In 1974, Fran started working at Caledonia-Mumford Elementary School as the remedial reading teacher, a job she loved. While raising the kids and working full-time, she took night courses at SUNY Geneseo for 5 years and earned her Master of Science in Education. Fran retired in 1997 but continued to substitute teach.

Fran enjoyed reading and tracing our family roots which she would present at annual family reunions. She compiled yearly family scrapbooks. She recruited many of us, including Steve and Terry, to accompany her on her numerous excursions to see new and interesting (or not) places. road, she would exclaim, “This is God’s country!” She loved flowers, gardening and just being outdoors; walking in the woods, Oatka Park, the beautiful land in Cadiz, and her favorite, Letchworth State Park, where we often had picnics and hikes, rain, or shine. Fran was always fiercely devoted and loving to her children and her grandchildren. She was a fun and wacky Memaw who had bonfires, walked the railroad tracks with the kids, took them regularly to the Scottsville Diner, on trips, and attended their school activities and recitals. She was a traditionalist who hosted family gatherings and her yearly Open House after Christmas. Years ago, she hosted neighborhood caroling parties and Halloween parties which always ended up at our house. Finally, Fran supported the CocaCola industry all her life until she was 88. There was rarely a moment when she didn’t have a Coke in her hands: a Coke and a smile!

Her survivors include her brother, Harold C. Rogers (Shirley, predeceased), three children, Allison M. (Dennis) Hays, David N. Morey, John R. Morey, “adopted son,” Stephen R. Morey and four grandchildren, Zachary J. (Al) Hays, Alexandra C. (Charles) Mott, Carson J. Morey and Sydney S. Morey, and one great-grandson, Jackson J. Mott, survived by several nieces and nephews, also by a very close family friend, Terry L. Brew.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Shirley J. Rogers; her sister, Mary L. Rogers; Aunt, Ada L. Snodgrass, as well as her former husband and friend, James N. Morey.

Fran will be laid to rest in Glenwood Cemetery in Perry.

A “Celebration of Life Service” befitting this fine lady will be announced at a later date.

Does Pet Insurance Extend to Pet Sitters?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I left my dog Shep in the care of a pet sitter for a week while I was away on business. The sitter texted me that Shep cut his paw during a walk in the nearby woods, and they took him to my veterinarian for care. Shep is doing fine now. I have pet insurance, but I don’t think it’s my responsibility to pay for this. The injury occurred while the sitter was walking him. The sitter says that injury and illness are my responsibility to cover. Who should pay? -- Bill in Chicago DEAR BILL: Did the sitter give any details of how Shep was injured?

The circumstances are important. For example, if Shep was on-leash and stepped on an unexpected piece of debris in the path, that’s different than if Shep was let off-leash and was running free in the woods. But, if you normally let him off-leash in the woods and instructed the sitter that it was OK to do that, then that’s another consideration.

Talk more with the sitter to get more details. In the meantime, pay the vet and submit the reimbursement claim to the pet insurance company.

Professional sitters routinely include a statement in their contract with clients that any illness or injury is the responsibility of the client. This protects them from financial loss if something does happen. However, if they are accused of deliberately neglecting or abusing a pet in their care, that statement won’t protect them.

On this note, I’ll add that sitters should purchase liability insurance that specifically covers them and their business in case a claim is made against them -- or worse, if they’re injured while caring for someone else’s pet.
