Autumn is the season of change. ~Taoist proverb
Magnificent Autumn! He comes not like a pilgrim, clad in russet weeds. He comes not like a hermit, clad in gray. But he comes like a warrior, with the stain of blood upon his brazen mail. His crimson scarf is rent.... The wind.... wafts to us the odor of forest leaves, that hang wilted on the dripping branches, or drop into the stream. Their gorgeous tints are gone, as if the autumnal rains had washed them out. Orange, yellow, and scarlet, all are changed to one melancholy russet hue.... There is a melancholy and continual roar in the tops of the tall pines.... It is the funeral anthem of the dying year.
~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

What’s the first step in sound proofing your home? Finding which rooms have the least amount of sound resistance.
To do this, make sure everyone is out of the house, unplug all electronics and close all doors and windows. Take a quick walk through your house and pause for a few moments in each room to evaluate which ones are the noisiest. Now consider if you’re installing a media room or teenage recreational room where volumes will be blasting on TV’s and stereos. With this information, you should have a good idea of where you need to soundproof and create barriers against noise. Here are some tips to help you achieve the optimal result of peace and quiet:
• Plant trees and hedges along the exterior of your home, perhaps along a fence. Not only do trees and hedges help with the environment and provide a good amount of privacy, they also slow down the travel of noise from the neighborhood into your home.
• Insulate your walls and ceilings. Better insulation in your interiors and exteriors won’t just drive away excess noise, it will also reduce your heating and cooling bills during the hot and cold months.
• Seal up all cracks and holes around windows and doors, and add double glazed windows to your current glass panes.

A spark of inspiration flickered to life for Ron Frear when he discovered a kiln le behind by a tenant, reminding him of the ceramic artistry his mother had always encouraged in him. With a background in construction, plumbing, and block masonry, his new endeavor was founding SiOx Ltd.
It’s a family affair. e artistic inspiration and business have always been a collaborative venture. His sister helped him brainstorm the company’s name: SiOx Limited, representing the silicon oxide that comprises glass. Ron’s wife has stood by his side through every season of the journey. eir children, introduced to the family business as little ones, have grown up helping at art fairs - learning to greet customers, wrap packages, and master sales and sincere conversation.
e Frears’ booth became a revolving door of returning friends and customers, many of whom watched the children grow from show to show, year a er year. Ron says, “ e strength and support of our family and the people we’ve met has kept us going.”
What began in 1986 as a practical way to earn a living soonblossomedintoasourceofpassionandpride.Ron’s earliest pieces, floral patterns stenciled and infused in glass, mirrored his lifelong love for flowers and nature. Irises, poppies, lilacs, and bird designs adorned dinnerware, bowls, and complete place settings.
His wife requested small glass flowers to use as wedding favors, and these became a customer favorite, growing into one of SiOx’s defining creations, with glass flowers and wall art now bringing color and creativity to homes locally and across the world. Small and large interchangeable glass flowers in a variety of styles and colors make a home pop with color inside and out yearround. Ron’s intricate wall hangings and large-scale flower sculptures cra ed from steel and copper are also seen in such spaces as the University of Buffalo Dean’s office.
As the Frear children grew, so did the business, expanding its repertoire and drawing a loyal customer base that returns year a er year, many for new designs and many for the memories.
Ron helps bring out customers’ artistic abilities as they design and collaborate to create a personalized product with the customer’s preferred colors, shapes, and designs. He has several molds to choose from to make a stunning piece and prized possession.
Ron says nature’s vibrant palette inspires his cra , with Western New York’s ever-changing seasons, especially Spring, when everything comes back to life and colors blossom.
"The strength and support of our family and the people we’ve met has kept us going."
RON FREAR
Some of Ron’s favorite stories rise from customers determined to take his art wherever life leads. One Pennsylvania woman sold her home, leaving her beloved Frear glass flowers in the yard as part of the deal, then ordered more to plant at her new home.
Ron’s visually vibrant and stunning creations have been commissioned by Cooper Vision, Salvation Army, the sheriff’s department, and even a special set of dinnerware for Warren Beatty’s “Dick Tracy” movie. But, for Ron, the true reward isn’t fame or accolades; it’s validation from a devoted client and the joy of creating art that makes people smile.
Ron’s artistic journey is self-taught, shaped by trial and error, creative curiosity, and the guidance that sometimes it’s okay to say “no.” at’s a lesson Ron has learned himself, brought to the forefront when he thinks about the invitation he received in 1986 to attend glassblowing classes at RIT’s prestigious School for American Cra smen. ough he graciously declined at the time, he looks back and admits: “If I had to do it over, maybe I’d have gone.” Still, his masterful fused glass process of melding color, light, and nature using a kiln has become his signature.
When he’s not cra ing masterpieces or traveling for shows, Ron and his wife retreat to the ousand Islands or state parks, camping, boating, and enjoying the outdoors as they did when their kids were young. is season in their lives allows them to travel for fun, not just for shows.
His advice for aspiring artists? “Don’t give up. Keep your nose to the grindstone. I tried for years to get into some shows. e competition was fierce. But persistence pays off. And keep good records: write your color ‘recipes’ down so you can replicate your best work.”
is rewarding business is a family legacy that lives on. rough every stage of trial and error, bloom and setback, show and homecoming, Ron Frear’s SiOx glasswork proves that the most beautiful creations, like the strongest families, are shaped with patience, passion, resilience, and plenty of heart.

As an elderly woman, I want to thank the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department for coming to my rescue when I ran out of gas on August 30th. They were helpful, respectful, and kind. They made my day! Thank you again! Sincerely, a grateful resident of Liv Co.
The article about The Enduring Legacy of Oliver’s by George Cassidy Payne was one of the best pieces I’ve ever read!! Made me tear up as I felt all the nostalgia he worked to help us feel and consider the importance of “sweet memories.”
We recently visited the Communication Technologies Museum in Bloomfield. It was so interesting seeing and learning about the many means of communication. Early radios, record players, telegraphy and more, including an actual Voice of America station. Thank you to the docent who spent time explaining about all the displays. This museum is definitely worth visiting.

My heart is so heavy right now. With all the division in this supposedly United nation, why can’t people live and let live, take care of each other, treat each other with respect and dignity, pay their fair share so the lowest among us doesn’t perish so that all may enjoy the beauty and wonders of the world we get to share? Please, folks, please try to do your part. Little things add up. Little changes, movement toward equity and respect is monumental. Otherwise, I fear what this world will come to.
There is absolutely not enough ambulatory handicap parking anywhere. I just watched a young man about in his thirties, get out of his car and dart inside the store. He was power walking all through the store, grabbing his groceries and definitely in a hurry. He did the same when walking out. He definitely did not have an ambulatory problem. We went in and left at the same time; he had a cart full of groceries and I had two things. He saw me watching him so he looked at me and said yeah you’re not handicapped (Elderly with several spine surgeries ). My point is perhaps he had a mental handicap, BUT HE WALKED WELL. We need more parking spaces for ambulatory handicap. You know it’s hard to WALK in and out of the grocery stores and establishments. You have to also account for the people who use Grandma’s handicap tags. And we know that happens. Something needs to be changed where there are more handicapped spots for the ambulatory difficulties!! Please consider that somehow.
Prospective real estate investors who hope to buy, hold and rent out their investment properties should first interview potential property managers before buying homes. While it’s possible to find property managers willing to manage single-family homes or duplexes, the financial resource Bankrate.com notes that many property managers prefer to manage large apartment complexes instead. Managing properties is hard work, and without skilled property managers on their side, real estate investors may become overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of their real estate investments while simultaneously trying to maintain their own residences. Before buying investment properties, prospective real estate investors should interview various local property managers or property management firms, inquiring about their fees and what is included in those fees. If the cost of hiring property managers drastically cuts into the profits investors hoped to make off their investment properties, they might be better off looking to invest their money in areas other than real estate. Prospective investors can compare the potential return on investment after the cost of property managers has been factored in to the return they might get from more traditional investments to determine if investing in real estate is a sound financial decision.

I step outside and the chilly air tightens the skin on my bare arms. Summer has ended all too quickly, and some of the leaves on the trees have already started to burn with the colors of fall. Fall colors.... so bright and intense and beautiful. It’s like nature is trying to fill you up with color, to saturate you so you can stockpile it before winter turns everything muted and dreary.

Sometimes it takes watchful eyes to keep seniors safe. Whether it’s physical, emotional or financial abuse, or any other kind, those who come in contact with seniors can look for signs that all is not well.
In banking, if you spot a senior who seems distressed and who repeatedly takes large sums of money out of an account (or changes his or her routine), that senior might be a victim of abuse or a scam. (Seniors, don’t use the drive-up teller window. Go inside so staff can get to know you. Sign a new signature card every six months so your handwriting sample is current.)
If you spot personality changes in a senior, the cause might be physical -- or it might be a result of abuse. Ask what’s going on. If a senior who used to dress immaculately is now wearing the same clothes for days in a row, ask. If a senior is no longer as sociable or doesn’t participate in previous activities, ask. If you spot bruises or injury, ask.
In a caregiver or hospital situation, you might see lack of care or physical abuse. A neighbor who’s had relatives move in might suddenly change his or her routines. At home, the senior might be denied food or medicine or mail.
If you want more information to help seniors, go online to the National Center on Elder Abuse (ncea.acl.gov) or call 855-5003537. Learn about the signs of abuse and what you can do when you suspect it’s taking place. Check eldercare.gov, or call 800-6771116. You’ll find information on getting help for housing, in-home services, long-term care, nutrition ... and abuse.
Seniors, if you think you’re being abused in any way, call the police. You don’t have to put up with abusive treatment.
By Keith Roach, M.D.
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband is 72 years old and on a waiting list for a hip replacement due to severe osteoarthritis. The surgeon he was referred to is quite young, has been performing anterior minimally invasive hip replacements for five years, and does about 250 per year.
Originally we had asked to be referred to a different surgeon who has 30 years of experience, but we were told that older surgeons, although very experienced, do not do this procedure. Instead, they tend to do what they were initially trained to do, which includes cutting through muscle and tendon to access the hip. Apparently this causes a lengthier recovery period.
What are your thoughts on this? -- D.M.
ANSWER: In general, I do not recommending telling a surgeon which specific type of surgery to perform. You place yourself in the surgeon’s hands and expect to be treated to the best of their expertise.Depending on your particular issues, one type of surgery may be better than another, but only a surgeon can decide this.
I reviewed the published literature on minimally invasive surgery versus conventional surgery. Not everyone is a candidate for the minimally invasive procedure. There are some benefits to the minimally invasive surgery such as less postoperative pain, reduced hospital stay, and less blood loss.
However, there has been no consistent benefit shown for infection rates and complications such as dislocation or fracture near the prosthesis. There also isn’t evidence of any revision of the procedure. Some studies have suggested a higher rate of nerve injury with the minimally invasive procedure.
Since there are some short-term but no proven long-term benefits to the minimally invasive procedure, I advise you to find a surgeon you trust and listen to their recommendation for the right procedure in your husband’s case.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a couple issues with my bladder and a sleep aid. I am an 81-year-old male in fairly good health. I have a difficult time getting back to sleep after getting up to empty my bladder. My solution for this was to take a melatonin tablet after each trip back to bed. This seemed to help.
However, I researched melatonin online and found that some people, my wife included, can get nausea and stomach cramps from using it. While this does not happen with me, I’m wondering if taking 3 mg per night could be harmful to me, given the reaction my wife gets. -- J.T.M.
ANSWER: Although melatonin is generally safe, it can cause some side effects. In addition to the stomach cramps, people have reported vivid dreams or nightmares, short-term depression, dizziness, and headaches. A few people find the medication helpful enough that they are willing to live with these side effects, but many people will give up and try a different treatment for sleep.
If melatonin isn’t causing you any side effects, then it is likely safe for you. Many people use melatonin, and although long-term safety has not been proven in trials, it is increasingly unlikely that any long-term adverse effects haven’t been discovered.
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2025 King Features Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m bringing home a 2-month-old puppy soon. And as I get my apartment ready, I also want to start her training right away. What do you recommend? -- Francine J., Jacksonville, Florida
DEAR FRANCINE: Congratulations! Sounds like your new puppy will get a great start. Basic obedience training is the foundation of all your puppy’s training. It can improve behavioral issues or stop them before they start. It keeps your puppy safe, because she’ll respond to you -- very important if she slips her leash outside or tries to nab something from the kitchen counter.
The six most important commands are:
Come: Your dog should stop whatever she’s doing and immediately come back to you.
Sit: Your puppy should sit calmly on your command.
Down: Your dog should lay down on their stomach, head up and alert.
Stay: Your dog should remain sitting (or laying) once you place them in that position.
Heel: Directs the dog to walk next to you -- not ahead, behind or darting off to the side.
Leave It: Commands her to drop and move away from any object.
As you start her training, remember:
Keep training sessions short but frequent. Puppies’ attention spans are super-short because they are still exploring their new world. Plus, they tire quickly.
Potty break first, then training. A puppy can’t concentrate on commands when she has to go.
Create a routine. Each day, train your puppy in a familiar, safe spot. Keep treats handy. Soft, puppy-appropriate treats given when your puppy does anything right. Cut them into very small pieces so they don’t eat too much.
Online training guides are very helpful. Search specifically for basic obedience training tutorials. I also recommend group or private puppy training sessions with a local trainer.
Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2025 King Features Synd., Inc.
Trainers train owners as well. Trainers won’t just work with pets, but also with pet owners. Obedience trainers will work with pets to teach them how to behave while also teaching owners various ways to positively reinforce the animals. This is a great way for owners to get hands-on experience and learn proper obedience training techniques, which are not always as easy to learn as owners may think.
