MOMENTS IN TIME

The History Channel

On May 27, 1939, a ship carrying 937 Jewish refugees is turned away from Cuba. The ship sailed close to Florida, hoping to disembark there, but a State Department telegram stated that the asylum-seekers must first “await their turns on the waiting list and qualify for and obtain immigration visas.” After appeals to Canada also were denied, the ship was forced to sail back to Europe.

DID YOU KNOW?

If you think that the only way to exercise and burn calories involves gym equipment, think again. Yard work can be just as challenging as a thorough aerobics workout at a nearby fitness club. To reap the greatest benefits, gardeners should use as little motorized machinery as possible. Manual tools will get you moving and can burn a substantial amount of calories. HOW TO FIX THAT STICKING DOOR

Nearlyeveryonehasexperienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wooddoorsandframes.

According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy foralleviatingastickingdooristo remove the door and pare down theedgesthatarerubbingsothat the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than mightbenecessary.

• Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily.

• Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an airconditioningunit.

• Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment.

• Spraythehingeswithlubricant if you suspect sticking is originatingbecauseofsqueaky hinges.

• Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

Here’s A Tip

* From charcoal grilling expert Kingsford, here's a great tip to use when grilling chicken: "When applying a dry rub to chicken pieces, it's o en hard to keep the rub affixed and it's even more difficult to keep the chicken's original, golden color. Try painting chicken pieces with yellow mustard prior to applying the rub. Not only will the rub stay in place, your final product will be visually appealing -- without any trace of mustard flavor."

* When wrapping vegetables in foil packets to grill, make the seams on the sides. is way, the veggie packets can be turned over for even cooking and to avoid burning on one side. You can even label the outside of the foil in permanent marker. It won't affect the taste of the food.

Jessica Middleton, Empowering Youth and Encouraging Outdoor Adventures at Camp Bristol Hills

Jessica Middleton’s journey to becoming Camp Director at 4-H

Camp Bristol Hills is a testament to her deep-rooted connection to the Finger Lakes region and her unwavering dedication to youth development. Born and raised in Naples, NY, Jessica’s childhood was intertwined with the fabric of camp life at Bristol Hills, guided by a profound love for the outdoors and a passion for nurturing young minds.

Jessica recounts how she knew at 7 years old that she wanted to be a camp counselor, and at 15, she landed her “dream job” washing dishes at camp and proceeded from there. Determined to make a career out of her love, Jessica pursued a degree in Outdoor Recreation from SUNY Cortland and headed east for a few jobs and then to Utah to be a wilderness therapy trip leader. Missing the Finger Lakes and wanting to keep working summers at Camp Bristol Hills, Jessica pursued her Master’s degree in elementary and special education at St. John Fisher College, where she met her husband, a fellow Neapolitan.

ey moved to Vermont a er graduation and Jessica taught special education there for a few years, but they returned to raise their children in Naples ten years ago. Jessica opted to stay home to raise their children instead of returning to the classroom, but she couldn’t leave camp behind. 2016 was their first summer as a family at Camp Bristol Hills, with an 18-month-old and a 6-month-old in tow. e family has returned every year since, the fourth-generation campers now 10 and 8 years old.

Jessica says, “4-H Camp Bristol Hills is in my blood,” explaining that her grandmother, Betty Krueger, attended camp in the 1930s and returned in the ‘60s and ‘70s as the camp nurse with her four sons in tow. Jessica’s parents, David Krueger and Priscilla (Whiting) Krueger, met at camp in the ‘60s and worked there together for many years. Jessica first attended as a Sprout Camper at 6 years old and has only missed a handful of summers since.

She identifies the camp’s Adventure Program as her first opportunity to try things herself, not just as the little sister with two older brothers guiding her and watching out for her. ere, with a fond memory of problem solving on the ropes course, she “[discovered her] inner strength, [her] ability to problem solve, and one of [her] favorite attributes, [her] feistiness.”

Jessica says, “ e magic of camp comes from the people and the time, patience, and caring we show each other while we build a silly and whacky community. I’m so grateful for the folks who came before me, the people I had as counselors, the folks I’ve been counselors with and now the people I get to supervise and mentor. With our reliance on technology and all the positive and negative consequences of that, we need a place where we can unplug and connect with each other. We get to learn so much about ourselves and others when we take away the distractions.”

In her role as Camp Director since 2017, Jessica wears many hats, conducting staff interviews, overseeing day-to-day operations during the summer months, making sure everything goes off without a hitch, and responding appropriately when there is a hitch. She says it is the people—the staff, the campers, and the community—that truly fuel her passion for the job. “My favorite thing about camp now is seeing individual growth and how that leads to generations of growth. I’ve been able to witness a lot of people growing up at camp as campers, then as staff, and then sending their kids to camp as campers!”

is year, Jessica proudly notes that 4-H Camp Bristol Hills was named one of the top residential summer camps in the country, but far beyond recognition, Jessica’s goal as Director is to create a space where every child feels a sense of belonging and can discover their true potential. “Each week, we get to create a new community where campers can learn new skills, connect with others, and gain some independence— all while being outdoors,” she explains, “We play, we live, we grow, and we glow together.”

Camp Bristol Hills has many activities designed to foster exploration and growth. From swimming lessons in the camp pool, the high and low ropes course, archery and air rifle courses, cra s, indoor and outdoor cooking, caring for animals in Critter Care classes, campers are encouraged to follow their passions and uncover their “sparks.” For more information, visit cceontario.org/4-h-camp-bristol-hills/.

Road Test

Save-a-lot, Give-a-lot

Instructors, please be nice to parents and children. Learning to drive, teaching your child to drive, and taking a road test are all stressful enough. Please be kind and courteous. Greet people with a hello and leave them with a goodbye or to have a nice day. It will go a long way for a moment that both new drivers and parents will remember for a long time. If you are having a bad day don’t pass it on to the community members you are serving. It is not an easy job, I am sure, and maybe it is not where you want to be. However, while you’re there, be nice. - Parents

Imagine my delight when the manager at Save-a-lot in LeRoy walked up to me and said: “The gentleman out at the propane bought you a plant, here’s the receipt”! By the time I got up there he was gone. Your wonderful gesture mad not only my day, but I had my 3 little granddaughters with me who talked all the way home about what a wonderful world we live in that people would do that to surprise someone they don’t even know! There are 4 people who will look at that beautiful plant all summer and smile at life’s surprises. Thank you!

District Budget Notice

Stunning Local Scenery

I love springtime when all the flowers start to bloom and the street comes alive. I know I can’t be the only one who gets a smile to my face.

Got our District Budget Notice. I have to ask, why do we need more NEW school buses time after time? Students graduate, new students begin Elementary school. Does the overall student population change that much to justify more buses? Or are buses that are 3 or 4 years old undrivable and unsafe? We have mechanics at most schools to maintain them. I have to drive my car into the ground because I can’t afford a new one every couple years. Then budgeted new Chromebooks. Are students keeping them after graduation? Are the schools reusing what they already have? I don’t see any statistics showing how many NEW students the budget increased for. Feel free to enlighten me if I’m wrong. Please make it simple so I can understand the facts without being manipulated by long, drawn out verbiage meant to confuse and hide real numbers.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Low Iron Levels Might Affect Blood Donor’s Depression

Magic Maze

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am wondering if there is any link between low iron and depression/anxiety. I am a 37-yearold woman, and I started taking Lexapro a few years ago. I upped my dose last year because I wasn’t feeling great, and my doctor and I decided that it was a good step to take. During the years that I have been taking Lexapro, I have also been a regular blood donor. I am CMV-negative, so I have blood suitable for newborns. The Red Cross says I am a “hero for babies,” and I enjoy doing something good. I haven’t donated in about five months, and I am feeling significantly better regarding my depression. I know that donating blood affects iron levels, but does it also affect the concentration of Lexapro in my body? If not, can low iron be contributing to my depression? I would love to know the answer so that I can possibly continue to donate, perhaps less frequently. -- J.M.

ANSWER: First, thank you for donating so regularly. CMV is a virus most people have been exposed to, and like most herpes viruses, it stays in the body forever. Newborns and premature babies, as well as organ transplant recipients, need CMV-negative blood, and there aren’t many CMVnegative people who can donate.

Depression and anxiety are both tightly linked to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Lexapro doesn’t increase serotonin, but it does make the transmission of serotonin from one nerve cell to another more effective by reducing the reuptake of serotonin at the nerve junction. Low iron levels have been shown to reduce serotonin levels, so this may be part of the reason why your depressive symptoms have been worse.

However, there are many other reasons, both inside and outside of your body, that can make depressive symptoms worse. Still, if you do have low iron levels, you can replace iron faster and keep it normal, despite blood donation and menstruation, with an iron supplement. (It would be best to check with your doctor on this.) If your depression gets better, then this would be pretty good evidence that low iron does affect your mood. (Note: You can have low iron and not have anemia at all.)

Find the right donation frequency so you can still help without putting your mental health in danger.

PAW’S CORNER

How to train an excited, reactive dog

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 1-year-old puppy, “Shellie,” gets very excited when she sees another dog approaching. Because she’s already 26 pounds, I’m worried that she’ll soon break away from me while on walks. What can I do? -- Glen H., Plattsburgh, New York

DEAR GLEN: Keeping control of your dog on the leash is such an important skill -- and there is a way to achieve that with Shellie.

First, work on curbing overall reactivity. Does Shellie get really excited when the leash appears? Does she practically drag you out the door for walks? Get control of that first:

-- Bring out the leash, but don’t put it on Shellie right away. Wait until she’s calm, then attach the leash.

-- Next, walk away from the door. Lead Shellie around the house. She’ll be pretty confused, and that’s fine.

-- Stand at the door and have her sit. Open the door slightly, then close it. Repeat. Repeat again until Shellie is staring at you like, “are you nuts?”

-- Now, exit the house, but only if Shellie stays by your side or slightly behind you. If she tries to rush out, repeat the door exercise.

Now, let’s address that reactivity on walks. Here are a few tips that can help:

-- A sturdy, short leash is essential to maintaining control.

-- Train Shellie to walk at your side with a little slack in the leash.

-- Work on core commands when no other dogs are around: Come, Sit, Stay, Heel.

-- Place yourself between Shellie and an approaching dog. Move her to your other side and keep her slightly behind you. You’re her protector right now.

-- Avoid practicing “meet and greets” with other dogs until Shellie is no longer reactive on sight.

ese training methods are just a start, but they’ll put you both on the right track. Most importantly, be consistent with training and daily walks.

DID YOU KNOW? Without pollinators, more than 100 crops grown in the United States would not be able to thrive. Plants, including various fruits, vegetables, nuts and more, rely on pollinators to ensure to transport pollen. Though many plants are self-pollinating and others are pollinated by the wind or water, many others rely on insects and animals to become pollinated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and small mammals all can work as pollinators. Examples of crops pollinated by pollinators include apples, squash and almonds.Animals and insects help pollinate more than 75 percent of the world’s flowering plants, and nearly 75 percent of all crops, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Unfortunately, pesticide use can diminish the number of natural pollinators. Natural gardening and pest-control can help protect the habitats of pollinators.

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES

Take charge of your to-go order: Convenience became the name of the game when ordering food during the pandemic. Curbside pickup service was offered as a safety measure, and many restaurants that never previously offered delivery or takeout started to do so to generate revenue at a time when in-person dining was limited if not disallowed. Some restaurants began offering delivery through apps like Grubhub or Uber Eats, and though that may be convenient for diners, restaurants must pay a fee to utilize those apps. In lieu of ordering through a third party delivery service, consumers can take charge of their to-go orders and pick up the food themselves. That saves restaurants the delivery app surcharge, allowing them to increase net profits on the meals they sell.
