WEAR A BASE LAYER. A thin T-shirt is a must as a base layer, better if it is made of fabric that wicks away moisture. There are even some that are made to be water repellent and stain resistant with anti-odor properties for those in warmer climes.Since this is the layer that is in direct contact with your skin, you want something that will allow moisture to escape as you sweat.

Q&A Master Gardeners with the

How can I improve the fertilityofmygardensoil?

The secret to a garden’s vitality lies within the hidden depths of its soil. To enhance the fertility of your garden soil, it is crucial to nourish it with a diverse array of nutrients and organic matter. One way to achieve this is through the magical art of composting. Composting is a transformative process where organic materials such as kitchen scraps, yard waste, and even fallen leaves are broken downbymicroorganismsintoarich, dark, and nutrient-dense soil amendment. By incorporating this black gold into your garden beds, you infuse the soil with a wealth of organic matter, enriching its

texture, improving its water retention capacity, and providing a buffet of nutrientsforyourplantstofeastupon.

Another method to boost soil fertility is through the use of cover crops. These green companions serve as living blankets, protectingthesoilfromerosion, suppressing weeds, and fixing nitrogen from the air into a usable form for plants. Cover crops, such as legumes like clover or vetch, can be sown between growing seasons or in fallow areas of your garden. Once they have fulfilled their duty, they can be tilled into the soil, adding organic matterandnutrientsastheydecompose. In addition to compost and cover crops,

incorporating organic fertilizers can also work wonders for your soil fertility. Organicfertilizerscomeinvariousforms, such as well-rotted manure, bone meal, fish emulsion, or seaweed extract. These natural sources of nutrients provide a gentle and slow-release supply of nourishment to your plants, promoting healthygrowthandabundantyields. It is important to note that soil fertility is a dynamic process that requires ongoing care and attention. Regularly testing the pH level of your soil can help you understand its acidity or alkalinity, allowing you to make necessary adjustments to create an

optimal growing environment for your plants. Additionally, rotating your crops each season can help prevent nutrient imbalances and the buildup of pests or diseases, ensuring the long-term health andproductivityof yourgarden.

So, as you embark on the journey of improving soil fertility, embrace the beauty and complexity of this hidden world. With a blend of composting, cover cropping, organic fertilizers, and thoughtful cultivation practices, you will create a soil ecosystem that teems with life and provides a nurturing foundation foryourgardentothrive.

Paving stones are used around the house in many different applications, including on walkways and patios. Sometimes, however, paving stones are beyond homeowners’ budgets. Fortunately, there’s another alternative that may look just as attractive and save homeowners money. Stamped concrete, also called textured or imprinted concrete, is a design element that replicates the look of stone, brick, wood, slate, or other materials in concrete. Stamped concrete can be used for patios, sidewalks, driveways, and pool decks. Stamped concrete also may be incorporated into interior flooring designs. Homeowners can explore their options with regard to stamped concrete by speaking with a masonry expert or landscape architect.

Yield: 10 cups

3 tablespoons melted butter

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon ground allspice

1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

8 cups popped popcorn

1 cup dried apple chips, broken into large pieces

1/4 cup toffee bits

Heat oven to 300 F. Whisk melted butter with vanilla. Toss brown sugar with cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg.

Toss popcorn with butter mixture. Sprinkle evenly with brown sugar mixture. Stir. Transfer to baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle apple chips and toffee bits over top. Bake 15 minutes, or until toffee bits start to melt. Cool before serving.

Tip: Add chopped pecans for extra crunch.

Hidden issues: Contractors may uncover all sorts of issues that need to be addressed before a project can progress. Examples include the presence of asbestos (common in older homes), plumbing problems, incorrectly wired electrical systems, and leaks or moisture issues. These problems also can impact the cost of the project, so set aside some money in the budget for unforeseen expenses. Chances are you are going to need some extra money to handle a few surprises during the project.

Discardsomeitems.Homeownerswhoaredownsizingfromlargehomes may need to part with some of their furniture to make their transition to smaller homes go more smoothly. For example, homeowners may need to get by with just one bedroom nightstand and may even need to replace their existing nightstands with something more compact. Discarding living room end tables and downsizing to a smaller coffee table also can help homeowners make smaller common areas more welcoming and less cluttered.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE

Plant to create privacy. Homeowners spent more time at home than ever before during the pandemic, and some might have grown tired of seeing what their neighbors are up to. Fencing might be the first solution homeowners consider when looking to make their landscapes more private. But new fencing installation can be expensive, costing homeowners between $1,667 and $4,075 on average, according to BobVila.com. A more costly and natural solution is to plant trees around the perimeter. Speak with a local landscaping professional, who can survey the property to see which trees might thrive and provide the privacy homeowners want.

Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

HOW TO ACCOUNT FOR A RISING COST OF LIVING

GRADUATION ETIQUETTE

Graduation parties should be all-inclusive. Graduation ceremonies are often followed by parties. If possible, try to coordinate with other friends who are graduating so that parties are not on the same day or at least not at the same time. This way everyone who would like to attend can do so. If friends do attend, The Emily Post Institute suggests that graduates explain to their friends that family will be at the party and that polite behavior is expected.

Look for a new job or fresh income streams. A rising cost of living is a concern for people from all walks of life, but it may be especially concerning for retirees or individuals with costs like childcare that can be hard to pare back. In such instances, individuals can look for new a job or fresh income streams. According to the Q3 2021 CNBC | Momentive Small Business Survey, 50 percent of small business owners say it’s gotten harder to find qualified people to hire compared to a year ago. And nearly one-third of survey respondents indicate they have open roles they have not been able to fill for at least three months. Individuals can explore local employment opportunities in an effort to find a new, more lucrative job that can help them combat a rising cost of living. Others who want to remain in their jobs can look for part-time work to supplement their existing income.

Here’s A Tip

* “ ere are so many different ways to pay bills these days that it can be hard to keep track of bills that need to be mailed. Here’s a great way to keep track of when to pay a bill so that it always gets there on time: I used to write the due dates of my bills on my calendar. Now I write the pay by date for each bill on the calendar. For bills that go in the mail, I write a date that’s a week ahead of when it is due. For bills that are paid online, I write a date three days ahead of the due date, and for automatic payments, I deduct the money from the paycheck BEFORE the dra is made. Now I never miss a due date.” -- T.F. in Indiana

* Change your air filter to save money. Be sure to change it once a month to keep your air conditioner working at its most efficient.

* You might not have a blackboard in your home, but keep a clean blackboard eraser around to get streaks off of freshly cleaned windows. It works really well in the car, too!

Dancing Queen

Thank you so very much to the lovely pink clad lady who caught me dancing in the aisle at Dollar General on May 4th. Not only did she dance with me, she gave me a coupon as well! Thank you for not only making my day, but my birthday as well! Keep dancing, Queen!

Thank you for returning my purse

Last week after shopping at a local store I returned my cart to the cart corral, not realizing I had left my purse in the cart. While driving home and realizing (then panicking) I had left my purse in the cart I drove back to the store. My purse was not in the cart where I had left it so I went inside the store to the Customer Service desk. Yes! Someone had brought my purse in and everything inside was still there. At the time I didn’t think to ask if the person who did this had left a name. But I would like to let whoever it was know how very grateful I am and to thank them. It’s nice to know that there are still honest people out there. Thank you!

At times, during my husband’s recent hospital stay I felt invisible to some of the professional medical staff when they entered his room (thankfully most were fine). As a retired RN I feel it is crucial for professionals ( MD, RN, etc.) to also address caregivers in the room when they arrive to discuss treatment, surgery, or discharge care. At times a patient’s life may depend on it. My advice to the professionals is to take the blinders off and acknowledge and address the caregiver(s) in the room. My advice to the caregiver: don’t be ignored. Speak up with your questions until you get an answer. Find an advocate on the unit that you can work with. There is no need to go it alone or have unanswered questions. Fragmented care isn’t much better than no care.

Foolish Parenting

The surest sign of spring is back in our area. No, it’s not the returning Robins. It’s the Dad with a riding mower and the toddler balanced on his knee. For those of you who think a mower is an amusement park ride, it’s time to learn about all the children who have squirmed, bounced off, and ended up under the mower blades. About 9,000 children a year are injured in mower accidents. Of that number, roughly 15 are fatalities. Why bother strapping your kid into a car seat for a drive when you don’t value their lives enough to keep them away from a mower?

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES

Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

PAW’S CORNER

How

long

is too long to leave pets at home?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor across the hall confronted me yesterday, accusing me of mistreating my dog. She said that “Cookie” whines and barks for hours whenever I am gone, and that I need to take him with me rather than leave him alone in the apartment. I work fulltime at an office that doesn’t allow dogs. When I travel, I take Cookie to a sitter. But is 8 to 10 hours away too long for a dog? -- Gerald in Brooklyn

DEAR GERALD: Dogs aren’t always happy about their owners going away for 8 hours a day. ey can develop separation anxiety. is can manifest as nonstop barking, whining or even acting out (like destroying your slippers, pooping in the living room or worse).

Try counterconditioning, a training method recommended by the ASPCA in its article “Separation Anxiety.” Each time you leave home, give your dog a treat or a puzzle toy with treats inside (which will keep him occupied for several minutes). When you get home, put the toy out of sight. e idea is that Cookie will associate your leaving with an enjoyable treat.

You can also desensitize him to your leaving by getting Cookie used to your “departure cues.” For example, if you always put on a coat and pick up your keys when you leave, have a training session where you do the same thing, but then sit down and watch TV instead of leaving. You’ll need to do this (and probably other moves) for several weeks, but it could help.

ese are very basic training exercises, and you may need to incorporate additional training. Check out the article on www.aspca.org, talk to Cookie’s vet and consider working with a professional trainer to help curb his anxiety.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

* On May 19, 1715, the colony of New York passes a law making it illegal to “gather, rake, take up, or bring to the market, any oysters whatsoever” between the months of May and September. The regulation was intended to help preserve certain species.

Each mumbered row contains two clues and two answers. e two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from MASTER for an I, you get MISTER. Do not change the order of the letters.

DID YOU KNOW?

The word “prom” is short for “promenade dance,” an annual formal dance held for high school students, typically those in their junior and senior years. While the term “prom” might not be used across the globe, schools in many countries host similar dances for high school-aged students on the cusp of moving on to college. In the United Kingdom, proms did not become popular until very recently. Prior to the 21st century, secondary school students in the UK might have attended formal dances at the onset of summer to celebrate the end of a school term, while students old enough to be finishing secondary school might have attended a “Leavers Ball” to commemorate that milestone in their life. But a 2012 report in the Daily Telegraph noted than more than 85 percent of secondary schools in Britain now host school proms, which range from relatively informal gatherings to more extravagant affairs. In South Africa, students mayattendaMatricDance, which commemorates their final year matriculatingintheirhighschools. German high school students celebrate their graduations rather informally, and such celebrations may even include some lighthearted mocking of their teachers.

An Arbor Day Celebration Like No Other: Rochester’s Tree Canopy Will Cover Us All!

On the last Friday of every April, Arbor Day is celebrated. On Friday, April 26, 2024, a celebration of trees was held in Monroe County on the grounds near the Trenton and Pamela Jackson Recreation Center, 485 N. Clinton Avenue. In the company of County Executive Adam Bello, with representatives from Monroe County Parks, the City of Rochester, Plant GFLX, and more, an Eastern Redbud tree and a Sugar Maple tree were planted. Many hands helped in the moving of Rochester soil, as these young trees prepare to root in their new home.

Presentations from local youth inspired the audience. Students from Genesee Community Charter School shared research on tree equity in cities from multiple east coast states.

Rocio Rodriguez, a 6th grade student from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School No. 9 represented her school’s Garden Clubwithareadingofheraward-winningpoem,“CANOPY.”

Jeremy and Jermanee Smith performed a reading of the classroom collaborative poem, “PoeTree,” written in celebration of Arbor Day and Poetry Month, by Seed Sowers and Storytellers students from the Freedom Scholars Learning Center.

4-H Educator Rachel DeVona announced the Art and Writing Awards, highlighting the arboreal artwork of local Monroe County youth.

Congratulations to the Seed Sowers and Storytellers group from Freedom Scholars Learning Center on being voted “Best in Show” with their entry, “PoeTree”! Well done!

With blue skies and a gentle breeze to back the day, this Arbor Day was both inspiring and informative. e theme of this year’s Arbor Day celebration was Tree Equity. Immunotherapy for Peanut Allergies Still a Work in Progress

DEAR DR. ROACH: Why can’t people see an allergist and get desensitized to a peanut allergy? As a child, I was allergic to dust, pet hair, milk and other things, but I received treatments. I am not bothered by any of these now. It would seem prudent to desensitize people who have allergies that are life-threatening, like peanut allergies. -- S.S.

ANSWER: Allergy immunotherapy continues to be a commonly used and valid treatment for many allergies, including environmental allergies, insect venom allergies and, more recently, food allergies. The treatment can be used for peanut allergies, but it is certainly not perfect. So, it isn’t used very often.

The goal of immunotherapy is to get a person to tolerate the allergen that they have an allergic response to. This involves giving very tiny amounts of the allergen below the level that would trigger an allergic response. Over time and under extremely close observation, the amount of the allergen is increased. For allergens like pollen, they are typically given by injection under the skin (or by drops under the tongue), but for food allergens, they are given orally.

For peanut allergies in particular, reactions are common during oral immunotherapy. For about 1 dose per 1,000 under supervision in an allergist’s office, emergency treatment with epinephrine was required. Even during maintenance therapy at home, a reaction occurred 3.5% of the time, requiring treatment with 0.7% of all doses. Although oral immunotherapy is effective at getting people to tolerate peanuts, the effectiveness is not long-lived, with only 13% of people still being able to tolerate a peanut challenge three years after discontinuing maintenance therapy. (Thirty-seven percent of people who continued maintenance therapy were able to tolerate the peanut challenge.)

Until there are significant improvements in outcomes, I am unlikely to recommend oral immunotherapy for people with peanut allergies, unless they are unable to effectively avoid exposure to peanuts and they continue to have repeated reactions. Whether they’re on immunotherapy or not, patients are still advised to continue careful avoidance and have emergency treatment immediately available. A new treatment for food allergies was just approved by the Food and Drug Adminstration. Omalizumab works by blocking the immunoglobulin IgE, which is critically important in allergic diseases. The study showed that 47% to 80% of subjects who were treated with omalizumab for four months (given by injection every two to four weeks) were able to tolerate a standard dose of the foods that they were allergic to (peanuts, plus at least two other foods). However, it appears that the benefit of the treatment does not persist after the treatment is discontinued, and it is intended for use in conjunction with food allergen avoidance to protect against accidental exposures.

In the future, combining this new medication with oral immunotherapy could be superior to using either alone, and it can help prevent serious or fatal allergic reactions from inadvertently being exposed to peanuts. Further studies are addressing this issue.

Children benefit in various ways from their involvement in youth sports. Being part of a team fosters feelings of belonging, inspires collaborative play and strategy and can be an excellent form of exercise. Still, despite the benefits, parents often worry about the injury risk their children face on the playing fields. Those fears are justified. A Safe Kids Worldwide survey of emergency room visits found that a young athlete visits a hospital emergency room for a sports-related injury more than a million times a year, or about every 25 seconds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 2.6 million children 0 to 19 years old are treated in the emergency department each year for sports- and recreation-related injuries. Some of the more common injuries young children face have to do with the skeletal and muscular systems of the body. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons stresses that children’s bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments are still growing, making them more susceptible to injury. Fortunately, with some education, many youth-sport injuries can be prevented. Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Diamond engagement rings are presented as tokens of love and affection during wedding proposals. The majority of first-time brides will receive a diamond ring, with surveys indicating only 13 percent opt for another gemstone. Researchers from Emory University determined that the average price for a diamond ring is roughly $2,500. However, grooms can spend much more. Diamonds have symbolized eternal love for centuries, perhaps since they were first discovered in India more than 2,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks actually thought diamonds were tears of the gods, while ancient Romans believed diamonds were splinters from heavenly stars.
