WOOD STAINING TIPS

Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and otherhomedesignelements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, andbirch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting inblotchinganduneventone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieveamoreevenlook. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsestgritsandpaperandmove toahighergritforasmoothfinish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers.

Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushesafterward.

Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to productdirections.

Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color andafinishtosavetime.

Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardwareanddamageit.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families.

Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. Assign an outside meeting place, so you can quickly locate each other

HARDSCAPE AND HOW TO USE IT

Choose materials. As with many landscaping projects, homeowners must first determine what types of additions they would like on their properties. Common hardscape features include patios, decks, walkways of pavers or bricks, and retaining walls. Hardscape elements can be functional or simply decorative features that add whimsy to the yard.

CONTROL CRABGRASS BEFORE IT APPEARS

Apply a pre-emergent herbicide. Pre-emergent herbicides kill crabgrass seedlings as they germinate. While these herbicides are highly effective, they must be applied at precisely the right time. The right time to apply them depends on weather patterns. For example, Lowes notes that homeowners who live in regions that might have experienced warmer than usual winters will probably need to apply the herbicides earlier than usual. While the manufacturer instructions should always be followed when applying herbicides, it’s essential that homeowners take weather patterns into consideration as well.

Get professional advice: Many homeowners are under the impression that doing the work themselves can save a considerable amount of money. This may be the case for homeowners with renovation experience. But by and large, professional contractors are an asset to any renovation. They can provide a realistic overview of the project, map out projected costs, point out areas that could be troublesome, and may have industry contacts that can keep supply costs low. Even if a homeowner will do a portion of the job, a contractor can do the bulk of the work and keep the project on budget.

Crabgrass is a common problem that appears in summer. According to Lowes, crabgrass plants produce thousands of seeds between midsummer and early fall. While the first frosts of late-fall or early winter kill the crabgrass plants, the seeds produced by the plants remain dormant throughout winter and then begin to grow as the ground temperature warms up with the spring and summer thaw. As a result, controlling germination, which is the development of a plant from a seed or spore after a period of dormancy,

THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN PASSOVER AND EASTER

To the casual observer, Passover and Easter may not to seem to have much in common. While the two holidays are celebrated by people of different faiths, they share certain similarities. Both Passover and Easter celebrate fundamental tenets of their respective faiths. For Christians, Easter commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, a moment that has shaped the lives of faithful Christians ever since. During Passover, Jews honor a moment in history that helped free slaves from captivity and shape them into the people of Israel. In addition, historians believe that the Passion of Christ, which is the short final period of Jesus’ life, occurred during the observance ofPesach,orPassover.Duringthis time, Jesus went to Jerusalem in response to a mandate to appear at the Temple. It also is believed that the Last Supper described in all four Gospels was likely a Passover seder. Liberation and rebirth also are at the heart of both holidays.

Consume electrolytes. According to Merck Source, alcohol interferes with the liver and pancreas, which can result in an imbalance of electrolytes. Electrolytes affect various parts of your body, including muscle function and other important processes. The medical resource Everyday Health notes that consuming electrolyte-rich beverages, including sports drinks, can restore the salt and potassium lost as a result of consuming alcohol.

TRICKS TO KEEP FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS FRESH

Chill your arrangement: The experts at FTD by Design tested various theories for keeping floral arrangements fresh, including adding aspirin to the water or using sugar or concoctions that contain vodka. Sugar and vinegar served as a runner-up for long-lasting blooms, but the best solution for prolonging the flowers was putting the arrangement in the refrigerator each night for roughly eight hours.

Total Solar Eclipse Celebrating the APRIL 8, 2024

Put this on your bucket list and mark the date. Stand in the shadow of the moon!

As through the poplar’s gusty spire

The March wind sweeps and sings,

I sit beside the hollow fire, And dream familiar things; Old memories wake, faint echoes make

A murmur of dead Springs...

~”Long Ago,” in Chambers’s Journal of Popular Literature, Science, and Art, Conducted by William and Robert Chambers, 1868 October 24th

FACTS: ABOUT THE SOLAR ECLIPSE

Rare Occurrence: Total solar eclipses are relatively rare events. On average, they occur somewhere on Earth roughly every 18 months, but each specific location may only experience a total solar eclipse once every few decades.

Viewing Safety: It’s essential to use proper eye protection when viewing a solar eclipse to prevent damage to your eyes. Specialized solar viewing glasses or eclipse glasses are necessary to safely observe the sun during the event.

Animal Behavior: During a solar eclipse, animals may exhibit unusual behaviors. Birds may return to their nests, thinking it’s nighttime, and nocturnal animals may become active.

Enter Our Eclipse Photo Contest

We’re calling all photographers, both amateur and professional, to share their stunning eclipse captures with us! Whether you’ve captured the breathtaking moment of totality or the subtle crescent phases, your photo could win! Submit your best shots for a chance to win exciting prizes and have your work featured across our platforms.

Deadline to submit photos:

Scientific Research: Solar eclipses provide scientists with valuable opportunities to study the sun’s outer atmosphere, known as the corona, which is typically obscured by the sun’s brightness. Researchers can observe and analyze the corona’s structure and dynamics during the brief period of totality.

Eclipse Chasers: Some enthusiasts, known as “eclipse chasers,” travel the world to witness solar eclipses in different locations. ey plan their travels meticulously to ensure they’re in the path of totality for the most spectacular views.

HOLY THURSDAY

Holy Thursday is sometimes referred to as “Covenant Thursday,” “Maundy Thursday” or “Thursday of Mysteries.” Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the apostles. According to Catholic News Agency, Holy Thursday might be one of the most important, complex and profound days of celebration in the Catholic Church. Holy Thursday celebrates the institution of the Eucharist as the true body and blood of Jesus Christ and the institution of the sacrament of the priesthood.

SIGNS YOUR PET HAS FLEAS

Raised bumps or welts: Fleas can irritate the skin, causing raised welts on pets and people. People are often affected near the ankles when fleas jump from the carpet onto human skin.

PAW’S CORNER

Homemade Treats

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My new puppy’s training is going very well, and he responds very well to rewards of little treats. I worry about feeding him so many processed, store-bought snacks though. What are some natural or homemade alternatives for treats? -- Maggie T., Nashua, N.H.

A: Many alternative recipes for homemade doggie treats are available on the internet and at the bookstore, but the healthiest ones share many common features. is means that you can find quite a few good recipes out there, or develop a few of your own.

Common ingredients in dog treats are meat protein (either from fresh meats, broths or strained baby foods), whole-grain flours (like wheat, oats, corn or rice), eggs and powdered supplements (like brewer’s yeast or garlic). A variety of flavorings can be added, including peanut butter, sugar or molasses, vanilla, salt, and small amounts of cheese or milk. Dry or instant yeast can be added to biscuit-type recipes, to allow the dough to rise before baking.

A popular training asset is liver treats, which can be made fairly easy and which last about four to five days if stored properly (in an airtight container and refrigerated). Chicken livers, eggs and sweetener are pureed, flour or cornmeal is mixed in (some owners add powdered supplements as well) and the mixture is baked, cooled and sliced into bite-size treats.

Certain foods are never safe for dogs, so don’t use any recipe that contains these ingredients: chocolate, onions, raisins/grapes or macadamia nuts. ey seem like fairly innocent foods, but can cause serious health problems in dogs.

Baking and testing these snacks out on your puppy can be a lot of fun. Remember, you can also share recipes with other dog owners and perhaps find the perfect treat for your companion.

VENT BRIGHTER

As relayed to me:

Smoking areas in parking lots and shopping plazas

On the very busy morning of Sunday, February 18th, at Wegmans Geneseo, an older gentleman’s cashier had rung up his large number of items, and he then discovered that he had forgotten his wallet. As he and the cashier tried to decide what to do, the woman behind him in line handed the cashier her credit card and very, very, generously rescued him. He protested, saying that he lived close by & could easily run home to get his wallet. She refused and just said “Pay it forward.” I’d just like to tell that woman that I have known that man for decades, and he has always been helping others with all kinds of issues, but he was truly surprised, and very grateful, to be on the receiving end that day. I know that he will definitely Pay it Forward.

Everyone smokes in [local] plaza. I walk to the grocery store there almost every day, and there is usually someone standing or sitting someplace smoking. Most employees from [the grocery store] smoke on their breaks and couldn’t care less about the non-smokers like myself who don’t want to smell the smoke. I have to go in the street and almost get run over. Legislation should say “No smoking, vaping, or using tobacco products in all shopping plazas, parking lots, etc.” They are too lax with this issue. The American Cancer Society got involved with [a company] and now they don’t sell cigarettes. However, other stores still sell them, which says it’s okay to smoke. [Another company] has signs in the windows saying “No Smoking,” but inside they sell cigarettes. More should be done.

German War prisoners

Well Meaning Efforts with Poor Results

The Hometown Story in your January 19th issue reminded me of the experiences we had with German war prisoners. In the early 1940s, my parents contracted with the Heinz Co. to raise tomatoes. My mother, Anna, a German immigrant, and our neighbor’s 20-yr-old daughter drove the truck full of ripe tomatoes to the Hilton facility. My mother did not disclose that she was German when they arrived. As they unloaded the truck, the prisoners commented in German on the attractiveness of the young woman and speculated what she might look like without any clothes. In German, Anna said she would look like any of the girls they had at home. The prisoners were surprised and also happy to hear German. Much discussion followed about where they and she were from in Germany. They were glad the war was over for them and they were in the US rather than Russia. They felt they were treated and cared for quite well but missed family and friends back home.

Many local residents are involved in helping feral cat colonies. For those unfamiliar, these people trap feral cats, have them spayed or neutered, and release them back to their colony. Some people provide the colonies with cat food. Their efforts come from their kind and loving hearts. I’ve owned pet cats for 29 years, and I’m ready to take off the rose-colored glasses and admit the feral cat colony concept is not working. Friends directly involved in colony support tell me there are always more cats coming in and restarting the flow of kittens. The constant drain on [humane society]’s resources (and others who offer spaying) is not the best use of funds. Cats are not part of our native ecosystem and the effect on our native bird populations is devastating. Walk outside anywhere and you’ll notice the vast decline in the number of birds. There are many factors against birds, but this is one we can control. This failed experiment needs to be replaced with humane euthanasia for feral cats. Host a St. Patrick’s Day Party with Style

(Family Features)

It may be a celebration in honor of a patron saint of Ireland, but you don’t have to be Irish to join the revelry that marks each St. Patrick’s Day. This year, gather some friends for a party that brings a bit of luck o’ the Irish to all.

Perfect Party Menu

It’s just not a party without a scrumptious spread of eats and drinks, and an occasion like St. Patrick’s Day makes it fun to plan your menu. From green frosted cookies to a green-hued punch, countless options are available. A buffet-style meal allows guests to nibble as they wish and enjoy a wide range of foods.

Be sure to think beyond the food itself and also consider how you can get creative in serving it. For example, a hearty stew might be served in bowls that resemble pots of gold. Or display traditional finger foods, such as slices of cucumber, on a platter in the shape of a shamrock.

Try creating a signature cocktail for the affair using a classic green liquor like Midori, sour apple schnapps or rum, or even a creme de menthe.

A Theme to Celebrate

With so many prominent icons associated with the holiday, decorating is probably one of the easiest aspects of your party planning. There’s no shortage of images that scream St. Patty’s Day: shamrocks, rainbows, pots of gold, leprechauns, top hats and more. You might choose just one for your party’s theme or create an everything-is-more ensemble that celebrates all things Irish. For a more subtle approach, simply think green. Lots and lots of green. From streamers to balloons to photo booth props, if it’s green, it will fit your theme. You can use plants to add greenery in elegant ways, green table and glassware for festive dining and even green-hued lighting for an all-Irish ambiance.

Festive Fun

Sure, the food and drinks are a big part of the party fun, but St. Patrick’s Day also lends itself to some playful party entertainment. A soundtrack with classic Irish tunes is an ideal backdrop. You might invite guests to compete in a limerick writing contest or a scavenger hunt to find prizes like gold-covered chocolate coins and a candy-filled pot of gold.

Proton-Pump Inhibitors

Highly Recommended

for Barrett’s Esophagus

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a retired male over 65 and a former occasional cigar smoker. I quit 15 years ago after I was diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus. I was also a former drinker and quit seven years ago. I regularly completed all the biopsies as required and took my proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) daily as instructed. This year, I read an article about PPIs contributing to dementia and neuropathy, which I have. My primary care physician suggested that I switch to over-the-counter H2 blockers as a safer approach. I developed an irregular heart rhythm and soaring blood pressure. I was then diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AFib). My stress test and echocardiogram are normal for my age. I am now on some heavyduty beta blockers, blood thinners and a very expensive rhythmcontrol drug.

A book I recently read written by two top cardiologists stated that long-term use of PPIs is dangerous and can cause AFib, but a recent article published by the National Institute of Health states the opposite. I also read that an irritated esophagus stimulates the esophagus nerve and triggers AFib. I’m confused now.

Because Barrett’s vastly increases my chances for getting a very aggressive cancer, doing nothing is not an option. I have already modified and continue to modify my diet, but that only goes so far. And as I’m sure you are aware of, a stroke caused by AFib is often life-threatening.

My complicated question is, which professional approach would you recommend: PPIs or H2 blockers? Is there a third option? -- B.B.

ANSWER: There is not a definitive answer on whether PPIs, like omeprazole, increase the risk of AFib. Studies are potentially confounded by the fact that people with AFib sometimes think they have stomach problems and may take a PPI, leading to a false association between the PPI and AFib. As you say, there have also been studies that suggest a decreased risk of AFib in people who use PPIs.

In my mind, the increased risk of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus as a result of untreated stomach acid reflux in a person with Barrett’s esophagus is the key in this situation, as Barrett’s is a condition where abnormal lining of the esophagus occurs due to years of acid exposure.

I do not believe over-the-counter H2 blockers, like famotidine (Pepcid), are adequate enough to reduce the risk of esophageal cancer, so I advise patients in your situation to use PPIs, despite their known risks.

The data suggesting a risk of dementia are weak. While there might be a small risk, the risk isn’t high enough to avoid using a PPI in a person with Barrett’s. B12 deficiency is absolutely a risk in people taking long-term PPIs. Low B12 can certainly lead to neuropathy, but both can be prevented and treated by testing for B12 deficiency and by getting supplementation, if needed.

I am very glad to hear you are getting routine endoscopic surveillance and biopsies so that any abnormal growth of the esophagus can be identified and treated promptly.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS

Air fresheners: These seemingly innocuous products may be doing more harm than good. Information published in a 2015 issue of The Journal of Toxicological Sciences linked air fresheners to volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. They also may contain ultra-fine particles of formaldehyde and phenol. In addition, National Geographic’s The Green Guide states that many air fresheners contain nerve-deadening chemicals that coat nasal passages and temporarily block one’s sense of smell. Many widely available air fresheners use phthalates, which are linked to hormonal and reproductive issues, birth defects and developmental disorders. In lieu of chemical air fresheners, spray diluted essential oils around the house.

IBee Constantino and Alex Hutchens Share Their Hearts and Talents with the Naples Community

n the heart of Naples, two young artists are making waves with their vibrant creativity and unwavering passion for their cra .

Currently displayed at Caruso’s Café and FLX Music is the work of Bailey (Bee) Constantino and Alex Hutchens, a dynamic duo whose love story intertwines with their artistic journey, bringing a fusion of talent that captivates the local community and beyond.

Bee’s journey in art began at a tender age, nurtured by her family’s artistic inclinations and her brother’s inspiration for individuality. Bee reminisces about days spent creating art with her mother, Michelle, whose paintings Bee admired all around their home. Her artistic awakening solidified during her teenage years, as she learned piano and then ukelele, playing music with her friends, including out in the community. In 2019 when a car accident broke her pelvis and ankle, Bee used art and music to cope with the PTSD.

Bee says she’s “always been in love with art,” particularly interested in tattooing. At 16, she met Alex Hutchens, who shares her love for art and tattoos, and since then, she’s been building her portfolio in hopes of an apprenticeship.

Bee’s favorite media is so core colored pencils, though she recently found interest working with oil and watercolor paints. “I love the vibrancy of colored pencils and seeing how opaque I can get it to look,” such as with spit shading techniques and select oil painting techniques.

Bee says anything with bright, vibrant colors, such as renaissance art, realism art, tattoos, and different textures and colors in fruits or nature, creates in her an urge to create art. She particularly finds inspiration in local artists at 1808 Tattoo Shop and other artists such as Dansville’s Wild Isley and TikTok realism artist Dylan Eakin.

Bee’s artistic process is a testament to her meticulous nature, putting a lot of heart, emotion, and time into each piece, practicing textures and undertones, layering colors, using different black and white pens, and carving away mistakes. She is so excited to share her art, and hopes it makes people feel something.

Whenever Bee finds herself in an artistic rut, she says she remembers her goals and aspirations, and “the thought of losing touch with my talents and wasting my time sends me back where I need to be.”

Bee advises aspiring artists, “Keep pushing for what you want. It takes a lot of hard work and can be a tough hobby, but it’s a rewarding one. It teaches patience and self-love. Don’t doubt yourself. Seeing artists online can be discouraging, but art speaks to people in many different ways; there’s always something to love about it.”

Complementing Bee’s artistic fervor is Alex, whose journey into the world of art took flight through doodles on completed school assignments and shared moments with his mother, watching artrelated TV shows. He says it wasn’t until he crossed paths with Bee in 2021 that his passion for art blossomed.

“Bailey saw potential in my art that I just considered doodles,” Alex recounts. He prefers working in graphite and colored pencil, but recently started exploring watercolor, saying Bee’s lessons on easy, fun ways to use color inspired him to now primarily draw in color.

Alex says when he doesn’t know what to draw, his go-to subjects are skulls, roses, snakes, and sharks, heavily inspired by the traditional tattoo style, and drawing those gets his creative juices flowing. Simply putting pencil to paper to doodle usually inspires him as well, and when he decides what he’d like to create, he goes for it. “ at’s o en when I have the most fun,” he says.

Alex’s advice for aspiring artists is simple: “Be bold. Ask for help, listen closely, and shoot for the stars. You are only limited by your own imagination and ambition.” Alex finds the 1808 Tattoo team to be “amazing artists and awesome people,” and he also finds inspiration in artists, Pacoway and Wil Shrike.

As they continue to carve their paths in the world of art, Bee and Alex remind aspiring artists and the community to boldly embrace their creativity and to never shy away from pursuing their dreams. With their talent and determination, this artistic duo leaves an indelible mark on the art scene in Naples and beyond.

Check out Bee and Alex’s artwork at Caruso’s Café and FLX Music in Naples. ey are so excited to share their art with the community and are so excited to see where the future leads them.

FINDING WORK AFTER 50

Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work.

Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent.

Duties include zero turn operation, line trimming, bed edging, mulch installation, clean ups and planting. Must have valid drivers license, reliable transportation, and strong work ethic. is is a 40+ hr/wk position. Season runs from March through December. Starting pay from $18-$20/hr. with bonus for those who complete the season.

Candidates may contact Rich at info@rjdlawnandsnow.com or Tony at 585-455-6661. ank you!

Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updated their résumés to reflect their most recent professional experience. But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs. Men and women over 50 may consider their experience from 20 years ago invaluable, but if that experience does not meet the specific needs of the jobs they’re now seeking, then they should remove it from their résumés so hiring managers can quickly access the more relevant information from their work histories.

Embrace 21st century job hunting. Finding a job in the second decade of the 21st century is unlike job hunting in decades prior, and wholly different from how men and women over 50 looked for jobs upon beginning their professional lives. Networking can mean the difference between unemployment and landing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiring managers and join professional organizations that host events where professionals in your field can gather.

Turn your age into a positive. Men and women over 50 should accept the likelihood that their new managers and/or hiring managers will be younger than them. When interviewing for a job, men and women over 50 should make an effort to showcase their enthusiasm about working with and learning from younger colleagues, while also noting their desire to commit long-term to a company. Some hiring managers may surprise older applicants, viewing them as potentially more reliable than younger workers simply looking to gain some experience in a particular industry before moving on to the next opportunity.

To see all openings and apply, visit: www.webstercsdjobs.org

Make use of your existing down time. Another strategy unemployed men and women over 50 can try as they look for work is to make better use of their existing downtime. Enrolling in online courses can give prospective employers the impression that applicants over 50 are both tech-savvy and willing to learn new things. Each of those things can help men and women over 50 overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may attach to older job candidates.

Finding work after 50 is not always easy, and job seekers may need to adjust their approach before they can get back in the workforce.

March 17 is a special day for people of Irish heritage and other celebrants across the globe. Each year, millions of people pay homage to St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, with parades, parties and religious services. Celebrations occur even though many celebrants may know little about this legendary saint.

Although St. Patrick’s Day has evolved into a festivity filled with clovers, frosty mugs of beer, green clothing, and lively music, the day was once a religious feast day honoring the man many credit with bringing Christianity to Ireland.

St. Patrick was born in Britain circa AD 387. Many are surprised to learn he was not Irish. In fact, St. Patrick first spent time in Ireland when he was captured by Irish pagans as a teen and taken to their country as a slave. After six years working as a shepherd, Patrick became familiar with the customs and spirit of the Irish and “found God.” He was able to eventually escape his imprisonment, vowing to one day return to Ireland as a free man. Patrick was schooled at monasteries and was ordained a priest and later became a bishop. Under Pope Celestine I, he was commissioned to become an apostle to Ireland and spread the news of God and Christianity. St.PatrickspentmanyyearsevangelizinginthenorthernhalfofIrelandand converted thousands of people from paganism to Christianity. According to legend, St. Patrick used the three-leaf clover to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish. Patrick’s efforts to drive out the pagans became an allegory in which he drove “snakes” out of Ireland.

Although green has become the primary color of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, and green remains widely associated with Ireland, during the 18th century, the Order of St. Patrick, an Anglo-Irish chivalric order, adopted blue as it’s official color. That led to blue being associated with St. Patrick. However, “wearing of the green” eventually fell back into favor, and the color green and an association with St. Patrick’s Day grew during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Although St. Patrick’s Day originated as a religious celebration in honor of a man who brought Christianity to Ireland, it has since become a larger representation of Irish pride and culture.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ST. PATRICK’S DAY

Irish ranks among the top five ancestries in nearly every state in the United States. The lone exceptions are New Mexico and Hawaii. Irish leads the way in Delaware, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
