But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar.

Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight.

The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

episodes without tonic/clonic body movements in high altitude.

These episodes occured while he was traveling, being physically active in Colorado and skiing in France. Both episodes happened at least 12 hours after physical activity. Our general physician back home felt that these were not true seizures, instead a reaction to possibly being dehydrated in high altitudes.

A vast amount of testing resulted in nothing unusual going on with his cardiovascular system or his brain. But just recently, he had another episode two days after being active, hydrating at sea level and banging his head -- with more body movement this time.

I have been researching online, and seizure-like reactions seem to occur due to electrolyte imbalances. It is very hard to get to a neurologist without an excessive wait time. Do you think antiseizure medications are warranted? -- S.S. ANSWER: It’s important to separate a seizure (which anyone can get if there is enough stress to the brain) from epilepsy, a condition where the person is susceptible to recurring seizures.

For it to be considered epilepsy, a person generally needs at least two unprovoked seizures (with no unusual stress to the brain) at least 24 hours apart. Only epilepsy is treated with long-term antiseizure medicines.

There is indeed a risk of developing seizures while at a high altitude. In addition, there are many other conditions that can provoke a seizure. You mentioned electrolyte imbalance, but sodium (too much or too little) as well as too little amounts of magnesium and calcium are among the most common. Low blood sugar is a frequent cause.

Some recreational drugs cause seizures, but withdrawal from drugs, especially alcohol, is more common. Metabolic diseases of the kidney and thyroid are also common. Sleep deprivation, brain injury (especially stroke, but also trauma), brain tumors and brain infections are all common triggers that your husband probably received an evaluation for.

Had it only been the first seizure, my advice likely would have been the same as your physician’s, although I probably would have suggested a consultation with an epileptologist (a neurologist with special expertise in seizures). Now that he has had a second -- and unprovoked -- seizure, my suspicion that he has epilepsy is much higher. (In hindsight, it’s clear that the first reaction really was a seizure.)

Most people experiencing their first seizure while at a high altitude were eventually found to have epilepsy after further testing, including an electroencephalogram (EEG). The high altitude doesn’t cause the seizure; it just increases the risk of a seizure in a person who has an underlying propensity for it. This may also occur with many medicines, especially those used for depression.

Your husband should see an epileptologist as soon as possible.

I strongly feel that it’s unwise for nonexperts to prescribe anti-seizure drugs, except as a treatment until a patient can be seen by an expert. I have seen that done many times, and it is done improperly, at least according to the expert a patient eventually sees. Your husband needs a timely and comprehensive reevaluation. Epileptologists recognize that new onset seizures in an adult require a more timely appointment.

PAW’S CORNER How Long Will Dog’s Heatstroke Recovery Take?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Two weeks ago, my Golden Retriever Lollie suffered a heatstroke. I let him outside into the backyard around midmorning. When I checked on him after about a half hour, he stumbled to me and collapsed. I rushed him to the veterinarian, where he was treated.

Lollie is recovering, but I am terrified to let him outside again. Why did he have problems so fast? Will this episode affect his health long-term? -- Greg in Houston DEAR GREG: I’m glad to hear that Lollie is recovering, because heatstroke can be deadly -- as you know. Your fear is normal, because you’re clearly a caring pet owner, and you don’t want Lollie to be injured again.

That care and attention is perhaps the biggest factor in Lollie recovering fully and having fewer long-term complications from his heatstroke.

The reasons why Lollie suffered heatstroke aren’t as clear, but there are so many factors that could have contributed to it. The morning may have been hotter than usual. Lollie may have had an underlying illness that made it harder for him to withstand the warmer temperature. He might not have drunk as much water as he needed to maintain his internal temperature.

You did all the right things: letting him outside earlier in the day; checking on him periodically; and immediately taking him to the vet as soon as you saw his symptoms were serious.

Keep following the vet’s instructions to support Lollie’s care as he recovers. It may be weeks or months before he can spend the same time in the heat. He’ll get tired more easily, so his daily walks should be kept short. Make sure he’s eating and drinking enough water. All these factors will improve his health for the long term.

Here’s a tip • Two tips for sewing buttons: First, for pants buttons, use unwaxed dental floss. It’s incredibly strong and can take a lot of abuse. Second, slip a pin between the button and the fabric before sewing on. When you’re finished, remove the pin. The button has some room behind it, and it will last longer.

• This is a tip for us singletons. I love whipped topping on my hot chocolate, but it doesn’t always last in my fridge.

I buy a tub of it, and spoon it into mug-size dollops on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. When the sheet is full, I freeze them. They can be peeled off easily and slipped in a container or plastic bag. When I make my hot chocolate, I plop one in straight from the freezer. It takes only minutes to soften and melt. And it’s delicious!

How physical activity can help in the fight against breast cancer

Breast cancer is a complex disease that affects millions of women across the globe each year.

Though the American Cancer Society (ACS) reports that only about 4 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States are under age 40, women of all ages can take steps to protect themselves against this deadly disease.

Exercise benefits women in a myriad of ways, and that includes lowering their risk for breast cancer.

The ACS notes that researchers are increasingly linking exercise to a reduced risk for breast cancer. Though the reasons behind that link remain unclear, some theorize that the positive effects of exercise on body weight, inflammation, hormones, and energy balance could be why regular physical activity helps women reduce their risk of breast cancer.

Body weight and breast cancer The National Cancer Institute reports that being obese after menopause can significantly increase a woman’s risk for breast cancer. In addition, the ACS attributes the rise in hormone receptor-positive breast cancers to an increased prevalence of excessive body weight. Routine exercise is a highly effective way to lose weight and keep weight off, which in turn could lower women’s risk for breast cancer.

Does physical activity really reduce breast cancer risk?

The human body is complex, and a host of factors, including those like age that women have no control over, can affect cancer risk. However, engaging in routine physical activity seems to be an effective way for women to reduce their risk for breast cancer. In fact, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation estimates that one-third of all breast cancer cases could be prevented with positive lifestyle choices that help women maintain a healthy weight, including exercise.

Routine physical activity can be a significant weapon in women’s arsenal as they continue their efforts to prevent and overcome breast cancer.

Being sedentary and breast cancer Exercise is a not a sedentary activity, and that could be another reason why women who are physically active have a lower risk for breast cancer. The ACS notes that more than one study has linked sitting time to a higher risk of various diseases, including breast cancer. Researchers with the ACS analyzed data from 77,462 women, who they followed for an average of 15.8 years.

None of the participants had cancer when the study started, but researchers found that women who sat for six or more hours per day during their free time had a 10 percent greater risk for invasive breast cancer than women who sat for less than three hours per day during free time.

Kathleen McAlpin Blasi: Weaving Authentic Stories for Rochester’s Youth

n the enchanting world of children’s literature, Kathy Blasi stands as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring writers and a cherished storyteller for young readers in the Rochester area. Her tales resonate with authenticity, drawing from her keen observations of the world and poignant childhood memories. Kathy’s journey as an author has been nurtured by the supportive community of Rochester Area Children’s Writers & Illustrators, where she has been a dedicated member since 2002. Through her work, she imparts valuable lessons to local children, encouraging them to embrace their unique voices and to spread kindness, much like the subjects of her books.

As a child, Kathy says she kept a journal and used to play school, with each of her students having a notebook to write in. She also credits her fourth-grade teacher as instrumental in her seeing herself as a writer. That teacher “simply told me a story I wrote was very good.

That’s all it took! That ‘little’ encouragement.”

Kathy’s writing is a testament to the power of genuine storytelling.

She believes in the importance of connecting with readers on a deep emotional level, referring to the process one mentor, Patricia Lee Gauch, refers to as “going to the well,” delving into personal experiences and emotions to infuse her stories with a profound sense of truth. It’s this dedication to authenticity that allows readers to trust Kathy’s narratives, keeping them engrossed and eager to turn each page.

Her writing process is as diverse as the stories she crafts. For historical pieces, Kathy immerses herself in extensive research before embarking on the creative journey. On longer fiction projects, she bravely forgoes the urge to edit prematurely, recognizing the importance of allowing the story to unfold naturally. For picture books, Kathy meticulously lays out the narrative, understanding the crucial role structure plays in the genre.

“All events are so unique,” Kathy says, but around Rochester, she fondly remembers her book launch for Hosea Plays On at the City of Rochester’s Public Market, where Hosea Taylor had played his saxophone. A few weeks later, Arnett Branch Library hosted an event and brought in a 12-piece band, many musicians having played with Hosea. In September 2021, Arnett completed murals of book spines on the outside of the library—and among them was Hosea Plays On. Kathy says, “I was honored to take a special part in the dedication.

And there it is, right next to one of my childhood favorites—The Snowy Day.” Kathy’s Milo’s Moonlight Mission book launch took place at Farmington Town Park, where the Victor/Farmington Library had installed a StoryWalk, so attendees could walk along and read the book, while taking in the beautifully mounted pages.

“These events are the stuff of an author’s dreams,” she says.

In Kathy Blasi, Rochester has a cherished author who not only weaves enchanting stories but also nurtures a community of writers and inspires young minds to embrace the magic of storytelling.

Paying It Forward, One Onion At A Time I was dining at my favorite local restaurant, enjoying my usual: the famous garbage plate. Now, as we all know, the portion sizes of these beasts could feed a small army! So I always bring snack size baggies with me to save small portions for later, as well as the extra toppings. I had bagged up all of my leftovers and was walking to my car when I saw an older gal struggling under the weight of a hefty garbage plate. The mighty plate proved to be too much and clattered to the ground, spilling some of its precious contents! I sprang into action as quickly as I could (I ain’t no spring chicken myself!) and saved what I could for this hungry patron. As I helped wrangle her meal, I noticed her plate was lacking the integral diced onions. How serendipitous! I promptly pulled my snack size baggie of diced onions from my pocket and handed it to her with a slight bow. She departed, bounty in tow, off to enjoy her sumptuous GP with diced onions. It made my day to make her day. Bon appetit!

I’d like to thank the parents of TE for raising an honest young man. Last week I lost my purse while running errands. I went home and couldn’t find it, so I went to the last place I remember stopping - my local dollar store. When I went back, T was the first person to greet me with my purse - what a relief! There was an older gentleman who said, “Lady, you’re lucky to get your purse back!” and he was right. I was so thankful, not for the $10 left in it but my license, DPA, credit cards, pictures, and more were all there. I’m 88 years old and the only thing I could remember was that I lost my bag. This is a tip for older ones: make a list of everything in your wallet and leave it in a safe place at home. Then if you lose it, you’ll be able to know what exactly you’re missing. T - it would be a better world if everyone was honest like you. Thank you!

SHARE WITH US Junk and More I cannot believe how the village is OK with a business using a historical area for junk/storage. This has been brought up to the village office and code enforcement. It seems like they are more concerned about a single vehicle in a remote location than the center of the village. Why? It makes me wonder about the special privileges some people/owners receive. It wasn’t that long ago the village was all over a business in the same area to clean up, so why does this place get a free pass? I know NOTHING was said because MORE junk is being piled up. Boats, vehicles, trailers, vans, lawn mowers, appliances, plows, A-Verdi boxes, lawn furniture, toys, etc. Visitors are seeing this area and the village should be ashamed.

STOP THE SMOKERS Please stop the people taking over some of the senior apartment buildings by smoking inside every day for years. It is putting others’ health at risk. Get them out! They do it because they can. What are you afraid of? You’re not very good at your job. Do your job or find another one that you’re good at. You don’t take away one’s right and give it to another.
