The term “smart home” refers to a residence that has appliances, HVAC, lighting, entertainment systems, security, and many more devices that communicate with one another. Such devices can be controlled remotely, according to SmartHomeUSA, an automation product retailer. Proponents of smart home technology say features can help people save money on utilities and conserve natural resources, all the while providing peace of mind to homeowners.

In 2016, 80 million smart home devices were delivered worldwide. That marks a 64 percent increase from 2015, according to the research data firm IHS Markit. The smart home trend is only expected to grow in coming years.

Although there’s interest in smart home technology, the industry remains fragmented. Consumers are trying to figure out which devices are simply fun and which provide practical benefits.

Furthermore, the range of smart devices is expanding rapidly, making potential compatability issues a concern. Companies that plan to educate consumers further about the advantages of smart home features and are open to standardization may have the best chances of survival.

Smart technology is taking over and is likely to continue changing the way people live and work.

Here’s a Halloween tip

Keep all visitors outside. Stay inside when passing out candy. Do not invite strangers into your home or allow them to use the restroom or your phone. You can also place a bowl of candy on the front porch rather than handing it out. Include a sign that says: “Happy Halloween! One per person, please.”

Keep a clear pathway. Keep all walkways, both inside and out, clear from flame-lit jack-o-lanterns, oversized decorations, and home décor. Removing items that pose tripping hazards will not only help keep aging loved ones safe, but also the children coming to the door whose vision may be impaired by a mask.

Avoid using candles: Instead, use battery-powered lights to illuminate your jack-o-lanterns. Flames from candles can pose a fire hazard. Part of a costume could catch on fire or, if forgotten, it could cause a house fire.

Hang a sign: Sorry, out of candy. If you’re not handing out candy or if you run out of candy before trick-or-treating hours end, leave a sign on the front door or porch.

This will deter ghosts and goblins from walking up to your front door and ringing your doorbell. Don’t forget to leave your lights on.

Spirits of Rochester: 20 Years of Rochester’s Ghost Walks

ith Halloween and all things spooky just around the corner, it’s the time of year for ghost walks! Celebrating its twentieth anniversary, the Rochester Candlelight Ghost Walks is back again and gaining more traction than ever throughout the town, chilling people to the bones with stories of hauntings related to our very own town.

Founder, Jenni, says “I’ve loved ghost stories since I was a child. My dad was big into ghost hunting, and we’d frequently visit Gettysburg, which is where I first encountered ghost walks.”

In 2004, she met Ralph, a professional photographer interested in ghosts, and the two decided Rochester would be a good place for the ghost walks just like Gettysburg. Unlike the Landmark Society’s theatrical ghost walk, Jenni says these ones “bring a different kind of experience led by ghost hunters where guests can experience real paranormal phenomena.”

Highlighting Rochester’s dark side, unique history, and infamous ghost stories, the organization offers seven specialized ghost walks, unique to different parts of town! While Jenni cannot choose a favorite walk, she says there’s something for everyone, and this time of year is perfect to take in local history while thrilling the senses with legends of yesteryear.

The Ghosts of Mt. Hope Ave. Tour guides mortals through the Mt. Hope neighborhood, answering mysteries such as who built certain castles and what makes Mt. Hope Cemetery unique compared with others. Visitors hear about encounters people have had with area ghosts. No matter how courageous you believe yourself to be, guides emphasize that nobody has dared to venture through the actual cemetery during this highly popular ghost walk; instead, they stick to adjacent regions.

Jack the Ripper in Rochester is a tour meant more for adults than families, sharing with visitors the local connections to the 1888 brutal serial killer in London’s East End who taunted authorities with letters and gruesome clues to his atrocities.

Rochester resident, Frances Tumblety, matched the murderer’s profile and was in the Whitechapel area of London during the killing spree. However, even though police believed Tumblety was the killer, there was no solid evidence to convict, so they released him, and Tumblety boarded the next ship back to America. The Jack the Ripper case remains unsolved to this day and Tumblety is buried at Holy Sepulchre on Lake Ave. This tour gives visitors a glimpse into Rochester’s history of secret societies, witchcraft, magic elixirs, royalty, and antisemitism that may have led to the London murders.

The Spirits of Sea Breeze Ghost Walk takes visitors through tales of pirates, the prohibition, and the pre-depression tourist boom, on a lakeside stories walk. Fairport might seem like a quaint, sweet town, but on the Phantoms of Fairport tour, learn the truth behind Fairport’s history and paranormal encounters. The Haunts of Henrietta Ghost Walk explores Rochester’s chilling underground railroad history. And the bone-chilling Lilac Legends Tour guides visitors through the dark side of Highland Park, where according to legend, hundreds of ghosts reside, many with centuries old tales. Soak up the local lore as you explore the city’s neighborhoods on these tours.

Rochester Candlelight Ghost Walks also coordinates ghost dinners and storytelling at the Union Tavern. Experience the same thrill, with the bonus Halloween and ghost-themed food within the haunted house. Or check out their haunted bus tours, pub crawls, paranormal bowling, Mt. COMMON HALLOWEEN PHOBIAS Halloween is about embracing the scary and the spooky and enjoying all off the things that go “bump” in the night. Naturally, the holiday can drum up some fears and tap into peoples’ anxieties, especially when they come face-to-face with some of the symbols of Halloween. Some of these fears may be full-blown phobias.

A phobia is defined as an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something. Phobias can elicit feelings of dread and horror. In psychological terms, it is an anxiety disorder in which a person will go to great lengths to avoid a perceived danger. This danger is usually much greater in the person’s mind than in real life.

Several symbols of Halloween can be tied to phobias. A person with achluophobia may not enjoy the darkness of the Halloween night. Someone with coimetrophobia probably would not want to visit a cemetery. Coming in contact with a ghost would not be ideal for someone with phasmophobia.

Anyone with wiccaphobia might fear meeting up with a broom-riding witch. One of the more common phobias is arachnophobia, which is a fear of spiders. Spider decorations are common come Halloween, so people with arachnophobia may struggle on and around October 31.

While Halloween will never fall on the thirteenth day of the month, the number 13 has been linked to Halloween festivities. Many people view the number 13 to be a harbinger of bad luck. This is especially so for those with triskaidekaphobia, or the fear of the number 13.

Believe it or not, some people have a crippling fear of Halloween itself.

This phobia is called samhainophobia. which is the fear of Halloween or the fear of the festival of the dead. The term “samhainophobia” originates from “Samhain,” meaning summer’s end. Samhain was also the name of the festival celebrated by the Celts to mark the transition from summer to winter.

Before saying “ so long” to yard w ork at the end of autumn, homeow ners should remove thatch from their law ns. Thatch is dead grass that’s often identifiable by its yellow ish tint, and this dead grass, if left to loom in the law n over the w inter, can block air and moisture from making its w ay into the soil. That can make it difficult for a law n to recover come the spring and may even c ost homeow ners a substantial amount of money to address w hen w inter finally skips tow n. W hen removing thatch, resist the temptation to rake w ith lots of physical force, as raking too hard can harm the law n.

Instead, commit to three or four easy passes w ith the rake, as this w ill collect the thatch w ithout damaging the law n. M any people rent a dethatcher from a nearby law n and garden supply store, and suc h a devic e c an make the process of removing thatch much easier.

How ever, be sure to clean the machine before using it on your law n, as there is no w ay of telling w hat c ondition the previous renter’s law n w as in w hen heor she used the device. Failing to clean the dethatcher can spread disease from a previous renter’s law n onto your ow n, and that can prove another costly mistake come the spring w hen your law n is looking to rebound. If seeding the law n in early fall, w hich can be a great time to reseed, remove the thatch before laying dow n any new seed. If you w ait to remove thatch until after you have laid dow n new seed, then the law n likely w on’t benefit from the seed and you w ill likely just rake the new seed aw ay w hen it comes time to remove thatch.

DID YOU KNOW? Getting out and about is a vital component of many seniors’ daily lives, but it’s important that aging men and women recognize how much exercise is healthy for them. The Department of Health & Human Services notes that adults need a mix of physical activity to stay healthy. That mix should be a combination of moderate-intensity aerobic activities, which can include golfing, swimming and even gardening, and muscle strengthening activities like weightlifting that make the muscles work harder than usual. The DHHS recommends adults combine 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week with at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that these guidelines are safe for individuals who are 65 and older, generally fit and have no limiting health conditions.

Individuals who do not fit that criteria should consult with their physicians before beginning a new exercise regimen, as it’s possible that they could be putting their health at considerable risk if they attempt to follow guidelines designed for people who are generally fit. It’s also important that healthy seniors avoid overdoing it in regard to exercise. Though the DHHS suggestions are the minimum recommendations, going too far beyond those guidelines without first consulting a physician could increase seniors’ risk for injury, illness or even death.

This person was looking for ways to keep birds and other small creatures safe from these cats. You should have added a suggestion that the neighbors bell their cats so that chipmunks, birds and other creatures have a chance to escape.

One issue that the person had was that only a few of the cats roaming together actually had collars, making them wonder if some were housecats and others were strays or feral cats. They also weren’t sure which neighbors the cats with collars might belong to.

If they knew which neighbors had those cats, they could certainly speak with the neighbors about at least putting a bell on their collars to warn wildlife of their approach.

So, an indirect approach is sometimes the best or only way to address the problem in an area with no animal control department. Join the local community’s Facebook page and post about the problem that outdoor cats are causing for wildlife in the area. Find opportunities to speak to others about it at church, school board meetings and public forums.

UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA A KEY TO COMPASSIONATE CARE Alzheimer’s disease is one of the more prominent forms of dementia, but there are many additional types of dementia that also can cause both physical and cognitive alterations. Understanding the complexity of dementia can be beneficial to both dementia sufferers and their caregivers.

Dementia is a general term used to define a decline in mental ability severe enough that it can interfere with daily life, offers the Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia.

Dementia is not a disease but a term used to describe a wide range of symptoms. The words “senility” and “dementia” often are incorrectly used interchangeably. However, serious mental decline is not a normal part of aging.

Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia for three years, which has been treated with ibrutinib (Imbruvica) and is now in remission. A side effect of Imbruvica is bleeding, and it requires the drug to be withheld before procedures.

I need a colonoscopy and a prostate biopsy now.

Ideally, how long before and after the procedures should Imbruvica be withheld? If the procedures cannot be performed a day apart, how long is too long an interval between them? How often can Imbruvica be withheld?

Also, at my age, how long is the recovery period required for anesthesia when undergoing two separate procedures? -- T. ANSWER: Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia is a rare disease -- a type of blood lymphoma and a cancer of the bone marrow. Ibrutinib is a new effective treatment for many people who have this condition and sustain remissions from the disease.

As you correctly say, bleeding can be a problem with this medicine, and it is generally held for three to seven days before and after surgery (depending on the type of procedure and the risk involved).

Because a prostate biopsy is a low-risk procedure and a colonoscopy has almost no risk (unless a biopsy is required, then making it a low-risk procedure), most experts would only hold the medication for three days before and after the procedure.

There have been reports of the disease flaring up when withholding the drug, so as little time as possible is the best answer of how long it should be withheld. If you can get the two procedures done within a few days of each other, that would seem reasonable to me, but it is your hematologist whose clinical judgment is required. It would be ideal to coordinate the two procedures.

In my opinion, even a day in between procedures is safe from the standpoint of anesthesia risk. ***

Rochester General Hospital Good Employees Keep Coming I’ve posted two articles this past year in Raves about encountering exemplary assistance from Rochester General Hospital (RGH) ER MD and a receptionist at the surgical waiting room. It happened again in the ER waiting room on October 16. It all started at 2PM in our home.

My wife started bleeding profusely from her right nostril. I could not stop the bleeding and called 911. Two guys came and drove her by ambulance to the back entrance of theER as my neighbor dropped me off in the front entrance of theER. I went to a side desk and inquired when I could see my wife back in the ER area. I was told awhile. After 10 minutes of nothing but the young woman behind the desk seeing me distraught said she would go and check on my wife. She smiled and jogged away. She came back in 10 minutes telling me she was going in a room that she arranged and an MD would see her soon. Then she got a uniformed guard to take me to the ER room. Yah!Yah! you will get flowers.

Wake up! I am trying to preserve not only my life but yours as well! If you think your behavior is that of a mature adult, think again! I wish all of you could be arrested for reckless driving! Roads are there to transport us from one place to the next and NOT for driving as if we are INDY 500 racers.

Timothy A. Slack October 13, 2023 Dansville – Timothy A. Slack, age 64, passed away unexpectedly Friday, October 13th at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.

He was born in Dansville on November 18, 1958, son of the late Alfred Slack Sr. and Arlene (LaBell) Marvin.

Tim was a retiree of Arkema, formerly known as Elf Atochem/Lucidol, located in Piffard.

He was known for his intense loyalty, work ethic, and servanthood; always concerned for the health and well-being of others above himself. Although too humble to admit, he was a skilled artist and especially loved gifting custom wood burned creations to others. He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend and will be missed immensely by those who loved him.

Tim is survived by his wife, Lorraine Slack; two daughters, Samantha (Douglas) Compton and Cherie (William) Stevens; son, Paul Barone; two granddaughters and two grandsons; stepfather, Alton Marvin; two sisters, Cynthia ( John) Jones and Angel Slack; four brothers, Thomas (Cheryl L. Thomas) Slack, Gene Marvin, William Slack, and Alfred Slack Jr. He is predeceased by his sister, Tammy Kuhn.

Evelyn was employed as a stenographer for Ernst & Ernst, an accounting firm in Buffalo until her retirement. She was a member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Buffalo, NY. No prior calling hours. Her Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 24, 2023 at 11 AM at the Central Presbyterian Church, 31 Center St. in Geneseo. Private interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery in Lewiston, PA.
