DID YOU KNOW? Spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, is the most common cause of mortality in infants. According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, SMA is a motor neuron disease that affects the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and voluntary muscle movement. WebMD notes that the severity of SMA varies widely, but the disease is known to weaken muscles and can cause difficulty eating, breathing and walking. In the past, infants diagnosed with SMA typically did not survive more than two years, but the MDA notes that doctors now prefer to avoid making rigid predictions on life expectancy based strictly on age of onset.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to the American Cancer Society, cancer patients receiving chemotherapy or radiation treatment are generally urged to avoid vaccinations other than the flu shot, though that conventional wisdom may not be applicable in relation to the COVID-19 virus. The ACS notes that vaccines require an immune system response to work effectively, and cancer patients’ immune systems may not be able to produce an adequate response to vaccines during treatment. That can make vaccines, including those for COVID-19, less effective. However, while traditionally cancer patients have been urged to avoid vaccinations during treatment, theACS notes that cancer patients, due to fragile immune systems resulting from both their disease and the treatments for it, are at risk for severe COVID-19 disease. As a result, doctors may still advise their patients to receive the COVID-19 vaccination even during treatment, as having some measure of protection against the virus may still be better than having none at all. No two cancer patients are the same, so those concerned about COVID-19 and the vaccinations against it are urged to discuss those concerns and their options with their cancer care team.

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS

When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs.

Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

KNIGHT in SHINING ARMOR

Very SPECIAL THANKS to the wonderful man who helped me after I tripped and fell on the uneven sidewalk outside the Canandaigua Post Office on Friday 7/21. Even though I was lucky enough to not be seriously injured, I’m not so sure I could have stood back up on my own. You were so kind to help me up, walk me into the post office and back out to my car, just to be sure I was okay. I wish I had a way to thank you personally, but will have to just hope you read this message thanking you for your kindness.

Missed Appointments

If you miss your appointment without canceling you get charged. Why then, if you have an appointment and you’re sitting there past the time, sometimes one hour plus, shouldn’t they be charged?

PLZ Return my JOSH!

Gosh darn it! My lawn sign of vaulting Josh Allen was kidnapped last week. A gift from family, he began jumping over my row of multi-colored solar lights during the ‘22-23 Christmas/Football Season. Similar figures exist to buy for yourself, if a fan. And if you’re the opposite, there are multiple methods to promote your own team without resorting to petit larceny. Please return Josh ASAP. The neighborhood misses him. We’d appreciate it, too, if you’d stop discarding your personal trash out your vehicle windows onto our properties. That glass bottle shattered all over my driveway & lawn, plus the road shoulder. It endangered neighborhood pets & children, plus passing sneaker soles & bicycle tires. We’ve got many more important activities to better occupy our time than collecting your daily assortment of cigarette butts & empty packs, fast food garbage, bottles & cans, etc.…

(Come Home, Josh! No ransom demands were issued.)

TIPS FOR NEGOTIATING WITH CONTRACTORS

Pick the right season. As with other industries, home renovation work heats up during certain seasons or times of year. General contractors may be more willing to negotiate for a lower price depending on when their busy season may be.Jobs may slow down in winter, for example.

Many homes do not have space for guest rooms, kids’ play areas and home theater lounges that are possible in homes with substantial square footage. But they may not be missing out at all.

While large homes remain popular, many people are embracing the benefits of smaller residences. Small homes help owners save money, require less maintenance, have smaller environmental impact, and reduce the temptation to accumulate “stuff.”

Owners of small homes or apartments can still enjoy the benefits of larger spaces, they just need to equip rooms to perform double duty.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE

— Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:

If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.

New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever.Prior to your move,SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange newTouchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself.Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home.

Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

CONSERVE

Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs.

The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well.

First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

MAKE

Reconsider your furniture. Furniture can make rooms feel cozy, cramped or spacious. For homeowners with limited space in their homes, furniture that also can be used as storage can save space without sacrificing comfort. For the bedroom, choose a storage bed if the quarters are cramped and it’s difficult to find space for two dressers. Such beds also can be used to store bed linens if closet space is limited. Purchase storage ottomans and/or end tables with storage beneath to make living areas feel less cramped.

Wood firepit: As their name suggests, wood firepits burn wood, which may appeal to homeowners who already have wood-burning fireplaces inside their homes. Because they don’t require homeowners to tap into gas lines, wood firepits are generally easy to set up and install, and many homeowners prefer the aesthetic appeal of crackling wood and flames that’s synonymous with wood firepits.

(Family Features) Here are three things you can do to help protect your mobile devices and your identity: Password protect your device. A recent study by Javelin Strategy and Research found that even though many smartphones are being used to handle sensitive financial information, only 33 percent of smartphone owners password-protect their devices. If your phone falls into the wrong hands, you could make it very easy for someone to access your personal information and steal your identity.

Review your social network privacy settings. It’s not just advertisers taking advantage of the personal information you include on your social network sites. As the use of social networking continues to increase, it’s expected that the use of malware will rise, too. Cybercriminals are always looking for ways to steal information and money. So you need to review your privacy settings frequently, be careful of what apps you install, and never “friend” someone you don’t know.

Consider getting extra protection. There are a growing number of tools available to help you monitor and protect your identity as well as restore your name and credit, should your identity get stolen. For example, Mobile Rhino is a specialty insurance program that not only insures your device, but also offers an Identity Monitoring Service that alerts you of any changes that could indicate someone else is using your information.

Gift Auctions Can Successfully Raise Funds

Gift auctions are a fun way to raise money for good causes. Organizing a gift auction requires a team of dedicated volunteers.

* Enlist a team of gift-wrappers. Presentation may determine bids and increase those bids. Ask for donations of baskets and wrapping materials, such as ribbon and cellophane. Each prize can be wrapped in ways to entice bidders to bid high and bid often.

Treasure Hunting Safety Tips

For The Savvy Yard Sale Shopper

Second-hand items, especially electronics, building supplies, appliances and helmets, may carry certain risks if damaged or used. If you are planning on reselling consumer items, check the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Web site for a guide on things that can and cannot be sold, and for product recalls. CSA Group, a leading certification and testing organization, offers these safety tips for yard sale shoppers.

Counterfeit or illegal goods: Counterfeiters often use flea markets to peddle fake goods. Packaging on counterfeits is often poorly designed or has only partial illustrations. Misspellings and unclear printing on products and labels may be another indicator of a fake product.

College is the first taste of true independence many young students experience. Whereas mom and dad were always around to make sure kids were out the door on time and homework was done, that safety blanket is no longer there once kids move into their dorm rooms.

The transition from high school to college can be both exciting and difficult. But parents can get a head start on that transition by encouraging their youngsters to be more independent during their final year of high school.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Take a good look at Disney princesses and you’ll notice that they’re all essentially attired in typical princess garb of gown, tiara, etc. But here’s a small difference you might not have picked up on -- some wear gloves, and some don’t. What’s up with that? The ladies without gloves are commoners who married into royalty.

THE BENEFITS TO JOINING A LOCAL GYM

Resolving to get healthy is a worthy goal. A healthy lifestyle that includes a nutritious diet and routine exercise can improve quality of life and decrease a person’s risk for various ailments, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

In an effort to exercise more, many men and women choose to join local gyms. Such a decision can have a profound impact on efforts to get healthier, benefitting men and women in myriad ways.

Gym members exercise more than non-members. It’s long been assumed that joining a gym motivates people to exercise more often, as few people want to pay monthly membership fees for facilities they don’t use. But researchers at Iowa State University backed up that assumption in a study of 405 relatively healthy adults. Half of the study participants had belonged to a gym for at least 30 days, while half had not been gym members for at least three months. Participants who belonged to a gym exercised an average of 484 minutes per week, greatly exceeding the 150-minutes-per-week minimum recommended by the Department of Health and Human Services. Non-members exercised an average of just 137 minutes per week, with only 18 percent meeting the recommended weekly exercise guidelines.

Joining a gym improves overall health. While common sense suggests joiningagymimprovesoverallhealth, theIowaStatestudyactuallyproved that to be true. The study found that, compared to non-members, gymgoers tended to have lower resting heart rates, higher cardiorespiratory fitness and smaller waist circumferences. Researchers found that those benefits were especially prevalent among participants who had kept their gym memberships for a year or more.

Joining a gym can increase the chances of getting more well-rounded workouts. DHHS guidelines say adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and should perform musclestrengthening exercises on two or more days each week. Non-members may be able to meet the guidelines for aerobic activity on their own, but the Iowa State study found that only about 20 percent of Americans meet guidelines for strength training. Gym memberships provide access to weights and strength-training machines that non-members do not necessarily have at home, increasing the chances that gym members will enjoy fuller, more well-rounded workouts.

Joining a gym can be a social endeavor. While many people join gyms to get healthy, it’s important that prospective members not overlook the potential social benefits of gym memberships. Exercise classes hosted at local gyms can provide great opportunities to meet like-minded individuals, and such individuals may ultimately become support systems people can lean on to achieve their fitness goals.

Keeping your pets cool during the summer is essential for their well-being. Here are some ideas to help you keep your pets cool:

Here’s a tip

for Grandparents

* Our friends who live in an apartment have a great storable sandbox solution. ey use a plastic under-the-bed storage bin lled with sand and toys. It has a lid and can be stored easily on their balcony. e kids still get to play in the sand even on rainy days. -- W. in Kentucky

* I saw this idea in a magazine somewhere, and now I make them for other moms and dads, as they are cute and functional: Make a cell number beaded bracelet kids can wear when you go out. Little kids may not remember Mommy’s cellphone number, but they can bring the bracelet to a store employee and ask him or her to call the number on the bracelet. Use elastic thread and colorful number beads. -- P.S. in Oregon

* If you use a 1/4-inch hole punch, which you can get at a hardware store for cheap, you easily can make a straw hole in the plastic tops of kids’ single serving drinks, like milk and water bottles. Less chance of a spill. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

Festival Season Never

Sleeps Around Rochester: Reflecting on My German Heritage This Weekend

Summer in Rochester is synonymous with sunny skies, warmer temps, road construction, and festivals. We have more than 140 festivals around Rochester each year, with at least one scheduled almost every weekend May to October, giving residents a reason to celebrate all year long.

Summer festivals bring excitement and joy, uniting residents in cultural celebrations that forge lasting bonds. Communities gather to enjoy shared traditions, art, music, and cuisine, while live performances by local talents and guests captivate visitors. Festivals o er people the chance to explore their heritage and immerse themselves in diverse customs. Street food and artisanal cra s awaken the senses, sparking conversation among neighbors and newcomers. Events cultivate pride.

According to Visit Rochester, “Rochester is known as a festival city with events centered around food, music, and the arts and culture scene that make Rochester a vibrant community.” ere are cultural and historic festivals, music festivals, food-centric festivals, kids’ festivals, remen’s carnivals, and more throughout the region.

Of part-German heritage myself, I am particularly intrigued by GermanFestivalsaroundthearea:Lima’sGermanBlossomFestival in June and the Spencerport German Festival this past weekend. Each brings a slice of typical German traditions, art, music, and cuisine to the community. I always think it amusing (and sort of frustrating) that many people associate German culture with beer. Yes, Oktoberfest over the pond certainly involves drinking, but that’s not all that makes the culture. I love the dancing, the natural beauty of the Bavarian terrain and foliage, and secondarily, yes, there’s bier. But gotta love American festivals – we connect culture with food and drink, of course, and we seem to embrace the opportunity to drink at festivals.

One of the festival’s highlights is its mouthwatering array of German culinary delights. From bratwurst and pretzels to sauerkraut and schnitzel, the aroma of German fare wa s through the air, enticing visitors to savor the avors of the Old World. Artisanalcra sandtraditionalclothingarealsoondisplay, allowing attendees to immerse themselves in the visual aspects of German culture.

e German Festival fosters a strong sense of community, as residents and visitors celebrate and learn about Germany’s rich heritage. It provides an opportunity for cultural exchange, education, and appreciation, while also creating lasting memories for families and friends.

I know I want to check out the local Bayern Verein Alpengrün (BVA), which has included some of my extended family over the years. e group helps preserve Bavarian folk dance customs and attire and embraces German culture through Schuhplattlers, gure dances, and music, fostering Gemütlichkeit (friendliness, camaraderie, community).

e BVA is a staple at area German festivals, and their enthusiasm is infectious. is week, I was certainly inspired to pull out my collection of travel guides to the various towns and villages we visited on my high school trip to Bavaria.

Find more information about the German Festival or the Federation of German-American Societies of Rochester, Inc. online and on social media. If you haven’t gotten enough German culture, check out Bu alo’s German Fest in September, and the vast array of Oktoberfests around the Rochester area between mid-September and mid-October. Evidently, we can’t get enough German fest around here (or maybe we just like beer and the Gemütlichkeit coming together to celebrate anything).

Everyone is welcome to be part of our wonderful German cultural tradition!

into a lively and colorful celebration of German culture. Visitors are treated to the mesmerizing tunes of traditional German music, performed by local and guest musicians. e lively polkas, waltzes, and folk songs create an atmosphere of joy and camaraderie, encouraging attendees to dance and join in the festivities.

HOW TO HEAL FROM MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES THAT AROSE DURING THE PANDEMIC

Embrace healthy behaviors. During the pandemic, many individuals, even those devoted to healthy living prior to 2020, found it difficult to continue engaging in behaviors and activities that promoted their overall health. Embracing these behaviors, which can include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and getting sufficient sleep, improves individuals’ ability to cope with stress. Re-establishing old routines also can return a sense of structure to daily life that might have gone missing over the last two years.

Puzzle Answers This Week

HIGH – OR LOW –

SPICY STEAK TAMPICO

Makes 4 servings

4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick)

2 tablespoons olive oil

Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below)

1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper

2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes.

3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately.

To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months.

Patient With Osteoarthritis Develops Hives After Taking Ibuprofen

DEAR DR. ROACH: I took ibuprofen for my osteoarthritis, but developed hives. Does this mean I’m allergic to all NSAIDs? What other therapeutic options do I have? -- J.B.

ANSWER: Anti-inflammatory drugs can have many allergic and allergic-type reactions, and ibuprofen is probably the most likely of all to do so. For people with mild reactions (such as hives that go away) without swelling or shortness of breath, I recommend avoiding ibuprofen and similar medicines, such as naproxen (Aleve and Naprosyn, among others), as well as any other medication ending in “-profen,” such as ketoprofen or flurbiprofen.

Aspirin is safe for most people as far as allergies go, although it is a little more likely to cause side effects at higher doses. The prescription medicines meloxicam (Mobic), nabumetone (Relafen) and celecoxib (Celebrex) are among the least likely to have any cross reaction with ibuprofen. Anti-inflammatory gels like diclofenac cream (Voltaren) should also be safe for topical use.

People with more serious reactions need a referral to an allergist, who may consider desensitization. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: We had to get a router attached to our computer to get Wi-Fi for our house. Is there any health risk by sitting or sleeping near the router from the radio waves it puts out? -- B.R.

ANSWER: The energy output from a typical Wi-Fi router is about 10 watts, and the energy is the lowfrequency, non-ionizing type. Very powerful radio sources, such as AM radio towers, can actually cause injury by heating tissues, but these have a power output in the thousands, or even tens of thousands, of watts. There has never been evidence of health effects on humans by low-output radio waves, such as the waves from Wi-Fi or cellphones.

There is no one who hasn’t experienced misfortune… illness, the loss of a loved one, businness reverses… yet we see some people who have overcome their sorrows and others whose sorrows have overcome them. There is no way to shield ourselves from unhappiness and disappointments, life is full of them. We must try to develop the ability to accept them with a sense of proportion. So, let us not pray for uninterrupted good fortune, but rather ask for the strength to meet whatever the day brings.

Some people are unaware that complete funeral arrangements, including financing, can be made well in advance of need. Our plan provides peace of mind and will spare loved ones the task of making painful decisions under stress. Ask us for details.

Beat the heat during a summer wedding

Tailor the reception menu to the weather. A large, heavy meal may not be what guests are hoping for when temperatures are especially hot. In such situations, provide some cool, light fare, such as chilled salads or cold soups, as first courses. Sorbet can be a cool palate cleanser, and grilled meats and vegetables will make for a satisfying, light main course. Ice cream cake may be a decadent option in lieu of more traditional wedding cake.

STEPS TO LEAVE A JOB GRACEFULLY

Deciding to leave a job is seldom an easy decision. However, it’s a more common decision than many people may know, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the average worker holds 10 different jobs before age 40.

People change jobs for a variety of reasons. Some do so because of better opportunities elsewhere, while others simply need a change. Regardless of what’s motivating a job change, leaving a place of employment can elicit various emotions, including some that may contribute to negative thoughts about a current employer. But it’s always best to leave a job gracefully, which can pay dividends down the road.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE

Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation.

Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.
