        Irresponsible Dog Owner
Dear Neighbor, You recently got a German Shepard that lives outside on a chain (I’ve got my own opinions on that but not right now.) How can you listen to your dog barking all the time at all hours of the day? Your neighbors don’t want to listen to it. On top of the barking, your dogs are frequently getting loose. They are coming onto neighboring properties and they are aggressive. When the one is chained up, it is barking and harassing us while we try to enjoy our own yard. The Chocolate Lab you keep off-leash is trying to get through and around the bad wire fence to come harass us. If you aren’t going to be good dog owners, get rid of them. Our peace and safety shouldn’t be diminished because you’re selfish, neglectful and irresponsible.

    Volunteer at our food pantry

I am getting so disgusted. Myself and a couple other volunteers at our food pantry have to watch another volunteer fill his trunk week after week and bring things to his family and friends. The worst part of the whole thing is they don’t even need it. There are so many people who really need the food who come in each week and really appreciate the food we give them. These people really need the food. It is very difficult to sit here every week watching him fill his trunk. Doesn’t he have any shame?
          UGH
The nice weather is finally here. We are able to open windows to let the fresh air in the house. BUT, people have to burn trash. Only way to keep the stink out is to close them back up. Can’t they smell it?

          12 whole fresh mushrooms, washed
          1 T. vegetable oil

    1 T. garlic, minced
1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese, softened
          1/4 c. grated Parmesan cheese
          1/4 t. ground black pepper
          1/4 t. onion powder
          1/4 t. ground cayenne pepper
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Carefully break off mushroom stems and chop until extremely fine. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add mushroom stems and garlic and fry until no moisture remains, taking care not to burn garlic. Set aside to cool. Combine cream cheese, Parmesan cheese, black pepper, onion powder and cayenne pepper. Stuff each mushroom cap with cheese mixture and arrange on a greased cookie sheet. Bake for 20 minutes, or until mushrooms are piping hot and liquid starts to form under caps.

CELEBRATE DAD AND SOME HISTORY THIS FATHER’S DAY

Father’s Day has been celebrated in one form or another since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Perhaps the most driving force behind Father’s Day was Senora Dodd, who thought of the idea of a day to honor fathers while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Having been raised by her father, Dodd wanted to honor the sacrifices that fathers make. Father’s Day was not formally considered a holiday until 1972, when a Congressional Act officially designated the third Sunday in June Father’s Day.

Families celebrate Father’s Day in many ways. This year Father’s Day falls on Sunday, June 15. Dads who are history buffs may want to celebrate this year’s holiday by reminiscing about the notable events that have occurred on June 15 through the years. Here are just some of the many historical events that took place on June 15.
1752: Ben Franklin performs his famous kite-flying experiment to test the electrical power of lightning.
1775: George Washington is appointed Commander in Chief of the American Army.

1878: The first attempt at a motion picture takes place. Twelve cameras, each taking one picture, focus on horses’ hooves to see if they will leave the ground.
1887: The New York Giants baseball team beats the Philadelphia Phillies 29 -1.

1916: The Boy Scouts of America receives its congressional charter.

1918: An inch of snow falls in northern Pennsylvania.
1924: Native Americans are proclaimed U.S. citizens.
1934: The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is dedicated.

          Robert Emmett Hayes
          June 5, 2023
Avon - Bob passed away peacefully June 5, 2023 at age 77, surrounded by the love of his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Janice Woleslagle Hayes; children, Tamara Sue Hayes, Cynthia (Patrick) Kostraba, Joshua Hayes (Kebra Horth); grandchildren, Aubrey Helchowski (Tasia Ortiz), Natalie (Adam) Burke, Jake Helchowski, Andrew Kostraba, Emma Kostraba, and Katie Helchowski; his siblings, Beverly Hilliker, William (Marti) Hayes,Barry (Rita) Hayes,Beth Ober (Brian Divine) and Barbra Dimock (Richard Rice); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bob was raised in Hartford, Connecticut, then attended RIT and made this area his new home. He loved Avon, the community and its members. Although his life-long career was in printing sales,he was also a dedicated part-time Avon Police O cer. Bob highly valued lending a helping hand to others and being of service to his community.
Lots of us have an affinity for the soil. Whether or not we have a “green thumb,” we enjoy working with growing things. We plant flowers that we expect to later delight us with their lovely, fragrant blossoms. We may plant a vegetable garden and hope to enjoy some truly fresh (and quite inexpensive) vegetables for our table.
The one who plants trees is thinking less of his own enjoyment than of his children or others who will benefit from the shade or the fruit from the trees for many years. Remembering those who planted the trees we enjoy today, let’s plant trees now for tomorrow.
Whatever a family chooses to pay for a funeral, we always render the finest, most considerate service possible.
He was a 50 year Avon Lion member and past President. He was also a member of Avon Masonic Lodge. Bob enjoyed spending time at his lake house, traveling with his wife Jan, winters in Arizona, and his camp in Hammondsport. Most of all he enjoyed listening to Jan play their piano. Bob absolutely loved his family and all of his dear friends. He frequently spoke of the many good times, memories, and blessings they all shared. e stories he told of his “adventures”are endless. His legacy continues on in those that are still told.
Family and friends are invited to call Friday, June 16, 2023 from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the Stephenson-Dougherty Funeral Home, 350 Genesee St, Avon. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, June 17, 2023 from 2-5pm at the Avon Commons, 597 Collins Street, Avon. Memorials may be made in his memory to Research Foundation/Camp Abilities and sent to; Lauren Lieberman SUNY Brockport 350 New Campus Drive, Brockport NY, 14420 (www.campabilities.org)

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. Assign an outside meeting place, so you can quickly locate each other

HOW TO FIX THAT STICKING DOOR
Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames. According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary.
          • Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily.
          • Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit.

    • Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment.
          • Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges.

    • Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

to know what is beneath the ground without having a property surveyed and marked. Digging without approval can result in damage to gas lines or water/sewer pipes. Always check with the utility company before digging trenches or holes.

Wood firepit: As their name suggests, wood firepits burn wood, which may appeal to homeowners who already have wood-burning fireplaces inside their homes. Because they don’t require homeowners to tap into gas lines, wood firepits are generally easy to set up and install, and many homeowners prefer the aesthetic appeal of crackling wood and flames that’s synonymous with wood firepits.

Pack for the journey. Anticipate what your child may need, but remember, unless you are traveling to a remote location, there’s a good chance you can buy many items at your destination. Direct much of your focus on packing items you’ll need for the journey, and less on what you’ll need once you arrive. Food and entertainment are two key components to keep in mind.

DatafromtheUnitedStatesDepartment of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

Once a term that dominated newspaper headlines and environmental discourse, “global warming” is now heard far less frequently. Many may assume global warming has been rebranded as “climate change,” but the two are not one and the same. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, global warming refers exclusively to the Earth’s rising surface temperature, while climate change includes global warming but also its side effects. Such side effects include the melting of the world’s glaciers and the growing frequency of drought and heavier rainstorms. Global warming is also used most often to refer to warming caused by humans, while climate change is a term used when discussing environmental changes that are human-causedornatural.

    TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
          By Keith Roach, M.D.

          Do Companies Advertise Ineffective Supplements?
DEAR DR. ROACH: I see supplements advertised on television that are supposed to clear “brain fog” and do many other beneficial things. Are these any good, and can they actually do the things that they claim? If they are effective, why aren’t they sold at drugstores? If not, how is it that companies are allowed to make these false claims and advertise these supplements on television? -- J.L.P.
          Salmon Orthodontics Specialist with

    Beautiful smiles enhance self-confidence & self-esteem.
ANSWER: I believe that there are over-the-counter supplements that are effective for treating some medical conditions, and there are a few instances in which there is strong evidence of benefit, such as a vitamin and mineral formula to slow progression of macular degeneration. Very often, there isn’t enough data to be sure a supplement is either effective or ineffective.
It is certainly true that supplement companies sometimes make claims that they cannot support. By law, supplement advertising can claim to support a body part or function (which is why you see claims like “supports heart health”), but these claims must be followed by: “This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.”
HOW TO SUPPORT A LOVED ONE WITH CANCER

Prepare yourself. Caregivers may be so busy looking into what they can do to help a loved one diagnosed with cancer that they overlook or forget the need to prepare themselves. The ASCO recommends that caregivers process their own feelings about a loved one’s diagnosis before they begin caring for that person. This can ensure their focus is where it needs to be when their loved needs help. In addition, caregivers can do everything to learn about their loved one’s disease ahead of time. Many patients are not forthcoming about their disease, and even those that are may find it physically and emotionally exhausting to repeatedly share the details of their disease with friends and family. Learning the basics on your own can save the patients from these feelings of exhaustion.
Often, the advertising for a supplement is at odds with that statement, and there are many instances of supplement manufacturers having to pay fines or change their advertising. A supplement that is found to be unsafe can be removed from the market by the FDA. In addition, any substance can be toxic if taken at a high enough dose. Vitamin A supplements are a good example.
The U.S. FDA does not regulate supplements the way they do prescription drugs, and supplement manufacturers do not need to prove that their products are effective. Further, there is strong evidence that some supplements sold in the U.S. do not contain as much (or any!) of the supplement they claim to provide. I always recommend getting a supplement that is verified by a third party, such as the U.S. Pharmacopeia or the National Science Foundation, if possible.
There are very few supplements proven to prevent problems, so I generally recommend against supplements in people who are healthy and have no symptoms. This definitely includes vitamin supplements. Supplements may have benefit in relieving symptoms for some less-serious medical conditions, and physicians should be (or get) familiar with more common supplements, their potential benefits and their toxicities.

Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms.

Whileinflammationisprotectiveby nature, sometimesaninflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy.

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH
The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soyprotein.TheUSSECalsonotes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeanscontainsfourmilligrams ofiron, thephytateandsoyprotein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaningthatthebody won’t really benefit from the iron. However, theUSSECrecommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorbmoreironfromthesefoods than it will when consuming other typessoyfoods.

I’ve been hearing more and more about rain gardens. What key details should I consider when installing one?

A rain garden looks like a perennial garden but has a shallow depression to collectandfilterstormwaterthatrunsoff nearby hard surfaces (roofs, driveways, walkways). Most rain gardens are a few inches deep and hold water for a day or so. Water leaving the garden may enter a storm drain system or seep into the ground where it can help renew groundwater. Plants in the rain garden slowstormwaterrunoff andhelpreduce flooding and erosion. Vegetation may remove pollutants entering waterways. A properly constructed rain garden
will hold and filter approximately 30 percent more rainfall than the same area covered by a lawn. It’s a winwin. They do take careful planning and installation to be most effective, but if you have questions or run into problems, the CCE is happy to help.
Considerations when installing a rain garden:
          1. Plants in a rain garden must withstand alternating periods of wet and dry soil as well as occasional flooding. Also consider deer-resistant plants if populations are high in your area.
          2.Varyplantforms,heights,andbloom
times to add diversity and interest to your rain garden.
          3. Water your newly planted garden regularly for the first season or until the plants are established.

    4. Keep weeds to a minimum, especially during establishment. A mulch layer will naturally suppress many weeds. Renew mulch at least once a year or as it decomposes. Composted mulch supplies nutrients
for native plants in your garden so there’s no need to add fertilizer.
          5. Check water inflow and overflow areas occasionally and clear debris as necessary.

    6. Over time, you may need to remove layers of silt or sediment that accumulate in the depression. At that point, you may want to divide plants that are crowded or fill gaps left by plants that failed to thrive.

        Summer tip for Seniors
          Stay Cool and Hydrated
As the temperature rises during summer, it’s crucial for seniors to stay cool and hydrated. Wear light, breathable clothing and stay in well-ventilated areas. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration. Opt for hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables. Avoid excessive exposure to the sun, especially during peak hours. If you need to go outside, wear a hat, sunglasses, and apply sunscreen. Consider using a fan or air conditioning to keep your living space cool. By taking these simple steps, you can enjoy the summer months comfortably and safely.

    is Cat Clings too Much

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 6-year-old cat Ella has gotten very clingy lately. She was always fairly independent and preferred to lounge atop the sofa and watch the world outside the window. Now she refuses to do that. She runs to greet me at the door, meows nonstop until I feed her and then wants to climb into my lap the instant I sit down. She also begs to come into the bedroom and curl up at the end of the bed next to my feet. I know this sounds just darling, but it’s unusual behavior from her. What’s your advice? -- Susan W., Burlington, Vermont
DEAR SUSAN: It’s interesting that Ella’s behavior has changed so noticeably, so fast. Has anything changed in the home environment, like you have a new work schedule, or moved furniture around, or added (or lost) a human family member?
Also, has anything about Ella’s health changed? Does she have any underlying condition that might be getting worse? Check with the vet to be sure.
If neither environment nor health are the problem, you can try to enforce some rules to alter Ella’s behavior.
-- Boredom: Make sure you play with Ella more o en each day. e clingy behavior may be a request for additional attention.
-- Boundaries: Don’t change feeding times just because Ella demands it. And don’t let her into the bedroom if you don’t want her there. Keep the door shut.
-- Bribery: Well, not really bribes, but positive reinforcement. When Ella goes to her old lounging spot, reward her with praise or a treat. Don’t give her treats when she’s in your lap; instead, lead her away and give a treat to her elsewhere.
Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

GREAT GIFTS FOR DEAR OLD DAD
Father’s Day is right around the corner, and the time has come once again to begin searching for a gift for dear old dad. Father’s Day gift shoppers have long since abandoned the notion that a new necktie is what dad really wants, but finding a gift that expresses your love and appreciation for the old man can still prove somewhat challenging.
Oftentimes, the best gifts are the ones that fulfill a need or want, and Father’s Day gifts are no exception.

1/4 cup unsweetened dark cocoa powder
          1/2 teaspoon baking soda
          Pinch of salt
          1/2 cup granulated sugar
          1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
          2 teaspoons coconut oil, melted
          1 teaspoon vanilla extract
12 vegan crunchy chocolate cookies, crushed
1 12-ounce jar Dollop Gourmet Madagascar Vanilla vegan frosting Milk
          1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Spray a donut pan with nonstick cooking spray.

    2. Pour the vinegar into a 1/2 cup measure. Add enough milk to come to the brim. Let sit until slightly thickened, 5 to 10 minutes.
          3. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. In a large bowl, mix together the sugar, applesauce, coconut oil, and vanilla. Slowly add the flour mixture and mix until smooth. Add the almond milk mixture and continue mixing for 1 minute more. Add half of the crushed cookies and mix until just combined.
          4. Scoop the batter into the prepared donut pan, filling threequarters of the way full. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 10 to 15 minutes. Let cool before frosting.
          5. Microwave the uncovered frosting jar for 5-second intervals, stirring in between, until soft. Gently frost the top of each donut. Sprinkle the remaining crushed cookies over the donuts.

USDA MyPlate Nutrition Games and Activities Make Healthy Eating Fun and Easier
          BY SUZIE WELLS

Healthy eating is important at every age. As the weather turns and farmers markets open, it seems to get easier, so let’s make this year the one in which we make a change toward healthier choices.
When we think of eating healthier, we sometimes feel overwhelmed by the wide variety of opinions and options out there. Healthier choices don’t have to be complicated or daunting, though, and thankfully today’s markets tend to have more options available to shoppers.
e main food groups (fruit, vegetable, grain, protein, dairy) remain constant as the ideal foods to comprise the bulk of human daily consumption. Generally, the closer to fresh we can keep those foods, the more nutrient-dense and thus healthier those foods are for us.
e area farmers unanimously agree: Eat local as much as you can and your family will be healthier (with less or no preservatives added to foods to keep them fresh from the farm to your table) AND you’ll help keep the local farmers and the adjacent economy going strong. e closer a product’s source, the fresher it should be and consequently the healthier it should be for you and your family.
Check out your local farmers markets for the week’s freshest produce, meats, and other agricultural products grown and made in your community.
Check out your county’s Cornell Cooperative Extension for more information as well. e Livingston County Cornell Cooperative Extension, forexample, supportsaBuyLocalCampaign, acommunitybased initiative to help sustain local agriculture and build a stronger local food system in Livingston and surrounding counties. ey also work to increase farm to restaurant connections, establish farm to institution connections, and provide access to fresh and nutritious food to low-income families. ey are de nitely a great resource for families across the area.
To make easy healthy choices, start simple. Infuse a new food or two in the week’s grocery shopping. Try a new fruit or veggie. Sample an alternative grain or protein. Just once a week, try something new. See who likes what and if something makes the cut, add it to the regular rotation. If not, try something else.

Keep ready-to-eat healthy choices in the pantry or fridge. If the apple or pear slices, the cheese sticks or yogurt cups, the carrot or celery sticks, the nuts, are readily available and need no cutting or other prep work, the kids (and let’s be honest, even the adults) will more likely to grab it to snack on instead of the bag of chips or other prepackaged, likely high preservatives-added food choices. So, prep the healthy choices when you have the energy and they’ll be ready when you need them.
To get children involved in healthy nutritional choices, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) suggests the MyPlate nutrition guide, and their website https://www.myplate.gov/life-stages/kids is rich with games and activities to help guide children on a healthy eating adventure, having fun while learning about healthy nutritional choices.
Parents and families can even use the MyPlate app to make healthy meal prep and shopping easier, whether for everyday meals or holiday celebrations. ey o er interactive downloadable and online games and apps so kids can have fun while learning about nutrition choices.
To be a MyPlate Champion, the USDA recommends children (and all of us):

Eat more fruits and veggies – Make half your plate fruits and veggies every day.
Try whole grains - such as oatmeal, whole wheat breads, or brown rice .
ink about what you drink – Choose water or milk when you’re thirsty.
Mix up your protein foods - including seafood, beans, lentils, nuts, eggs, meats, and poultry.
Get involved – Help put away groceries, stir ingredients, peel fruits, assemble salads, or set the table.
Be active your way – Find ways to be active and move your body for at least 1 hour a day.
e USDA o ers ideas for creating MyPlate menus children can engage with at home and take an active role in planning (and hey, maybe then even the pickiest of eaters will eat those green beans or brussels sprouts!).
Or take the Grocery Store Bingo board on your next shopping trip to keep the kiddos occupied and engaged with healthy food choices as you tackle the chore. ere are even MadLib-style word blanks, mazes, and word searches and scrambles. Maybe make a Food Group Friend out of food from each food group.
Use mealtimes to connect with those you love. Eat meals together whenever possible. Maybe work together to cook/make the meals. Turn o devices so you can “unplug” and focus on healthy foods and each other.
e USDA even o ers suggestions for holidays and other celebrations. Try hosting a holiday brunch to spice up the traditional proteins or add fun and healthy options with a festive yogurt parfait bar instead of ice cream sundaes.
“ e bene ts of healthy eating add up over time, bite by bite.” – USDA MyPlate program
