Scott’s Scottsville Hots

Multi-Generation Rochester Favorite: Strong Family Roots Keep Scott’s Scottsville Hots Thriving

In 1991, the three youngest Scott siblings, sisters Jannie and Ola and brother Roosevelt Scott, started serving Rochester their homemade favorites. According to Ola, who is retired now but stopped in for a bite, “Our mother liked to cook. Her specialty was sauces, sauces for everything, especially BBQ and meat sauces. She taught us how to cook and how to work hard!”

The restaurant started out at Rochester Public Market as Scott’s Original. Then the siblings rented a space, replacing a struggling breakfast sandwich business, and expanded it, quickly purchasing their own building and

changing the name to Scott’s II.

For 29 years, the Scotts grew their business and their following at the Public Market. The family worked side-by-side, serving early mornings and becoming a touchstone in many people’s lives. In January 2020, just before COVID hit, they sold the building and were ready to retire, until Cedric Scott, Roosevelt’s son, decided to keep it going, moving the business to 3892 Scottsville Road in the Scottsville Plaza, where they have been since.

Today, there is a steady stream of customers walking in, seemingly all with favorite dishes. “My favorite thing is the breakfast sandwich. I’ve been getting it since I was little,” says Camille on her way to work.

Cedric is slow to speak about their success - humble until Ola and the customers chide him.

“Our breakfast sandwich is famous. It was voted Rochester’s Choice for years. That’s how a lot of people know us. And our Plates - they’re different. My grandmother’s meat sauce recipe and our home frieswe cut them fresh daily. That’s what makes it so good,” says Cedric (as he hands a to-go Plate to a customer who tells Cedric he’s delivering the food to the hospital - his pregnant partner has specifically requested the dish, craving it while in the maternity ward waiting to deliver her baby!).

Roosevelt still works in the mornings cooking and prepping, along with Cedric and Cedric Jr. - making their restaurant a three-generation family-run business.

“It just blossomed, and we are keeping it rolling!” says Ola with a smile.

And they are, with Saturday BBQ featuring Chicken & Ribs, Friday Fish Frys with Grouper filets, catering for parties and events, and their new offering: Wings.

Attractions in the Genesee Country Attractions

Genesee Country Village and Museum

Come visit yesteryear at Genesee Country Village & Museum in Mumford, NY. This is simply not the same museum you visited with your middle school class. Genesee Country Village & Museum is famously known as the largest living history museum in New York state, encompassing a 19th-century Historic Village, Nature Center, and the John L. Wehle Gallery, to name a few of its attractions. The museum constantly finds innovative ways to bring history back to life to share it with new audiences.

GCV&M’s Director of Communications, Paige Engard, particularly notes the premier collection of 19th-century clothing in the John L. Wehle Gallery. Engard says, “These

pieces tell an interesting story about the changes in fashion reflected through history, and several interesting pieces can be seen for the first time in our new exhibit ‘Becoming Gendered: Garment as Gender Artifact.’ This exhibit explores the changing landscape of gendered fashion throughout the 19th century.” This exhibit is a must-see for all who understand how clothing serves as a mode of expression, art, and identity throughout the eras.

For foodies and beer connoisseurs, there are an abundance of opportunities to try new and delicious food and beer such as you’ve rarely tried before. Stop by September 2 for the Hop Harvest Festival to learn about the history of beer and brewing in NY State and to sample local craft beers. A little-known fact is that GCV&M is one of the few American museums with a working 19th century brewery! Take a guided tour through Grieve’s Brewery and discover how New York State became a leading producer of hops, and impress your family and friends with your newfound expertise. Or just relax and kick back with a drink in the outdoor Beer Garden, which includes live music along with the assortment of historical craft beers on tap as well as savory ciders.

Fall would not be complete without getting in the spooky holiday spirit as the leaves begin to change. GCV&M is the only museum that transforms into a wonderfully spectacular and delightfully ghoulish tour through the Historic Village every Halloween. What better way to revisit the past than walking a guided tour of the museum after nightfall?

To re/discover all that GCV&M has to offer, visit gcv.org for more information.

Caledonia Trout Festival

Known as the birthplace of American trout fishing, with its rich hatchery history, Caledonia welcomed professional artist, Tim Parsley, in 2022 to paint an awe-inspiring mural depicting Spring Creek and its trout as part of the Livingston County Walls Project. The mural, titled Trout Culture, highlights Caledonia’s unique natural water resources and the Fish Hatchery.

When Parsley and Company completed the mural, the Caledonia community hosted a public celebration.

To celebrate the legacy of Seth Green, trout fishing, and the area’s incredible water quality, the Big Springs Historical Society and the Village of Caledonia hosts an annual Trout Festival in the Village Office parking lot beside the Trout Culture mural.

At the Big Springs Museum in Caledonia, their mission is clear: promote Caledonia and Mumford’s rich history, heritage, and culture. Through their diverse programs and events, Big Springs Museum connects history to contemporary life to create unforgettable experiences for the community.

This 10k sq. ft. museum stores and displays local relics and historical items from the village of Caledonia and the surrounding area. Founded in the mid-1940s after a few years acquiring and storing artifacts of this small region, the Big Springs Museum has an abundance of space to portray the stories of the area’s

past through present.

Check out the current exhibits, such as “A Heritage Shared: African-American Families of Caledonia and Mumford” exhibit, in which visitors can view the stories of many of the African-American families that settled in the Caledonia-Mumford area.

The exhibit encourages visitors to read these stories, think about why the people chose to volunteer or serve, and consider how their collective actions shaped the community. According to the exhibit, “Volunteering transforms what we value into action. It binds us together in a common cause that promotes positive change in our communities and in ourselves.”

Genesee Valley Greenway

and play!”

The Genesee Valley Greenway (GVG) State Park is a 90-mile combination of green space corridor that follows the route of the old Genesee Valley Canal (18401878) and Pennsylvania Railroad Rochester Branch (1882-1963) from the Erie Canalway Trail in Rochester’s Genesee Valley Park to the village of Cuba in Allegany County. The Greenway will eventually extend to Hinsdale in Cattaraugus County.

It includes a public, multi-use trail and natural and historic resources. The majority of the trail is an old railway bed that is a straight, level surface. The Greenway passes through woodlands, wetlands, river and stream valleys, rolling farmlands, steep gorges, and historic villages in sixteen towns in Monroe, Livingston, Wyoming, Allegany, and Cattaraugus counties.

Like other abandoned towpaths and rail beds across the country, the Genesee Valley Greenway provides opportunities for public recreation, an off-road link to communities, parks, other trails, attractions in the region and preservation of open space and the natural and cultural resources in the corridor. The GVG connects to the Genesee River Trail, Finger Lakes Trail, Erie Canal Recreation Way, the Erie Attica Trail, and the Lehigh Valley

Trail. A work-in-progress, the Greenway continues to improve and link the greenspaces along the 90-mile span.

The continuity of the corridor creates a ‘tunnel of green’ and acts as a physical link between adjacent habitats, providing an important bridge for organisms.

Throughout the year, the Greenway partners with organizations along the corridor to collect resources for worthy causes. Volunteers also help spread the word about the Greenway’s historically significant features such as the Black Creek Canal culvert, the Belfast warehouse, Oakland locks, and an array of old railway bridges and bridge abutments.

The Greenway allows biking, hiking, horseback riding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling in designated areas, and fishing in designated waterways. Families and individuals can even enjoy geocaching along the Greenway. There is truly something for everyone along the Greenway.

Each January, the GVG rings in the New Year with a guided First Day Hike in Avon, Cuba, Hinsdale, Mt. Morris, Nunda, Rochester, Scottsville, and York (with about 500 participants in 2023). Each April celebrates Trails Day to encourage veterans and newbies to explore the trail with guided tours. May features I Love My Park Day events in towns and villages along the span, encouraging folks to help clean up the community’s fabulous greenspaces.

The Greenway is part of the Wegmans Passport Program, encouraging families to get outside and explore the GVG, completing 2-7.5 mile hikes along the Greenway to receive a Wegmans coupon and enter to win an Empire Passport.

Stokoe Farms

Stokoe Farms has been a cherished family favorite among Western New Yorkers for the past two hundred years. In autumn, it’s time to visit Stokoe Farms for the annual Harvest Festival. With over 35 available familyfriendly activities, opportunities are endless for all ages. Come visit Harvest Fest to discover everything Stokoe has to offer this fall. According to Marketing and Operations Director, Julie Izzo Niedzwick, “Some of the favorite guest activities include the zip line, paint ball range, hayrides, pumpkins, giant slides, mazes, and more.”

Animal lovers rejoice! With Stokoe’s petting zoo animals ranging from the usual to the unusual, everything from farm goats, pigs, sheep, Riley the camel, armadillos, and Patagonian Mara, Stokoe boasts the largest petting zoo in the local WNY region. They are even known for their mob of kangaroos and wallabies, Niedzwick says. Little ones will fall in love with all the furry friends while creating memories that will last a lifetime. The Canine Spectacular Dog Show is also a hit, with three shows daily on the weekends.

Foodies delight in an abundance of fall treats. This festival includes mouth-watering apple cider donuts, kettle corn, homemade fudge (made with real butter), and food trucks including a candy cannon launch at 4:30 p.m. “We stuff a cannon full of 50 pounds of candy in the courtyard and it goes off for all the kids,” explains Niedzwick.

Providing a comfortable, family-friendly atmosphere is what Stokoe does best. While Niedzwick has conducted thirteen seasons with Stokoe, including throughout high school and college, she says her favorite is seeing local families come out and have a fun time. “It’s really meant as a way for families to come together.”

There is always something new in the works at Stokoe Farms. Reserve your spot to see the 2024 Solar Eclipse on April 8th. DISTRICT NO 4 ONE ROOM SCHOOL HOUSE

13 Beckwith Avenue, Scottsville

The Wheatland District No. 4 School was one of nine “district schools” built during the 1800s in the Town of Wheatland. District No. 4, also known as the Quaker School or the South Road School, was built in the 1850s. The building was continuously in use as a school until 1947 when it closed. The No. 4 schoolhouse originally stood on South Road near the present Stokoe Farm. In early 2003, the building was donated to the Wheatland-Chili School District for historic preservation and educational usage. On September 15, 2004, the schoolhouse made its grand journey through the Village of Scottsville and was greeted by hundreds of students as it reached its new location on the campus of TJ Connor Elementary School. The schoolhouse then underwent an extensive renovation, and when complete was furnished with artifacts from the early twentieth century, some of which were original to the building when it first served as a school.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF MUMFORD

893 George Street, Mumford

The First Presbyterian Church of Mumford is a historic Church located in the Hamlet of Mumford in the Town of Wheatland. It has a High Victorian Gothic–style edifice built from 1869 to 1883 of bog limestone quarried from a rare fossilized deposit on the Oliver Allen farm east of Mumford. The Church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

GENESEE COUNTRY VILLAGE AND MUSEUM

19th-century American life for the education and enjoyment of the public. Through preservation and stewardship, the Museum uses its historic buildings and gardens, landscapes, collections, and works of art to create experiences that foster a deeper understanding of the past and its relevance to the contemporary world.

ROCHESTER STREET HISTORIC DISTRICT

Rochester Street, Scottsville

41 residences form the Rochester Street Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Over half the houses in the Rochester Street Historic District date from the 1830s to the 1850s, stamping the village with an overall “Greek Revival” character. Consistency in scale, rhythm, and use successfully harmonizes the earliest building and the most recent newcomer to the street. The Rochester Street Historic District is a remarkably insulated village environment which historically and architecturally records the lives, skills, and prosperity of its nineteenth century inhabitants.

SAGE-MARLOW HOUSE

69 Main Street, Scottsville

The Sage-Marlowe House is a small one and a half story “vernacular” style, or working man’s house, at 69 Main Street in Scottsville. It was built around 1830 by Simeon Sage and was one of Scottsville’s earliest houses. There have been a total of fourteen owners in the house’s history. The Marlowe family owned it for sixty years before it was purchased by the Wheatland Historical Association (WHA) in 1985. The WHA has restored and furnished the house to represent the 1830-1850 time period. One room of the house was especially designed to house the George Skivington collection of historical materials. It consists of books, scrapbooks, and original documents collected by Mr. Skivington and donated to the WHA. In 2000 a room was added to the back of the house used for educational purposes and group activities. A Christmas sale and a geranium sale have been held at the house annually for several years.

SCOTTSVILLE FREE LIBRARY 28 Main Street, Scottsville

The Scottsville Free Library, formerly known as Windom Hall, is one of the most historically significant and prominent structures in the Village of Scottsville. Designed by distinguished architect Charles H. Ellis, the building officially opened on February 17, 1892 as a community hall and theater. For decades, Windom Hall was used for “a variety of social and cultural purposes before coming into the possession of Scottsville Free Library in 1935.” Today, the Scottsville Free Library remains a cornerstone of the community, providing residents and patrons with access to an expansive collection of literature, the latest in technological research, video and audio offerings, and enriching programming for all ages. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Scottsville Free Library is a great source of pride and pleasure for the entire community.

Scottsville

Ebenezer Allen, one of the first white settlers west of the Genesee River, came to the Genesee country in 1782 following the Sullivan campaigns. Allen left Mt. Morris and settled on Oatka Creek in 1786, near what is now the Village of Scottsville. In 1789, he sold to Peter Sheffer. Allan established a gristmill at the falls of the Genesee and thus founded the first Rochester industry. In 1790, settler Jacob Schoonover arrived in the Genesee country. His daughter, in the same year, met and was married to Peter Sheffer’s son. This was the first marriage between white people west of the Genesee River. Isaac Scotts, after whom the Village is named, came in the same year and purchased 150 acres of land, which covered most of present-day Scottsville. His log house stood at the southwest corner of Main and Rochester Streets.

In the 1830s and 1840s, wheat was “king” in Monroe County and the wheat and flour from Wheatland were second to none. New York and Boston merchants often paid premium prices for a barrel of flour made from the wheat grown and ground here. Farmers and merchants became wealthy and built beautiful homes to replace the log cabins and simple houses that had been hastily erected. Most of the beautiful PostColonial, Greek Revival, and cobblestone houses were built during these two decades.

Genesee Valley Trail Town Initiative

In 2020, Letchworth Gateway Villages and its network of partners were awarded funding from USDA Rural Development and the Northern Border Regional Commission to launch a Trail Town initiative with ten communities across the rural Genesee Valley Region in 2021-2022.

Wheatland is one of those ten communities!

Trail Town Programs® revitalize rural communities by growing outdoor tourism and small businesses. First launched in 2007 by the Progress Fund to help support communities along the 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage (GAP), that program now helps trails nationwide follow their lead.

Using a combination of consistent trail-wide marketing, infrastructure improvements, business coaching and support, Trail Town initiatives have proven to be an effective approach for growing rural economies.

In 10 years, the Allegheny Passage Trail Town program was able to grow 65 new businesses and 270 jobs, achieving an overall economic impact of $50 million per year with 40% of local income generated from outdoor recreation (an increase of 25% from when the initiative started).

The work of the participating partners and municipalities in Southern Monroe, Livingston, Wyoming and Allegany Counties to establish a network of Trail Town hubs along the Genesee Valley Greenway and Genesee River corridor is an ongoing, multi-year effort. The project aims to boost outdoor recreation, create more resilient communities and support the region’s post-COVID recovery.

WHAT IS A TRAIL TOWN?

A Trail Town is a community through which a trail passes, that embraces the trail as an important

community resource, promotes the trail to its residents, and supports trail users with services. Trails can be valuable community assets and attractive destinations for visitors, drawing them into neighboring communities and stimulating local businesses through spending on meals, lodging, and gear.

WHY OUTDOOR RECREATION?

Outdoor recreation and related visitation are proven to stimulate local economies by creating a “virtuous cycle” of economic benefits, including:

• Improving residents’ quality of life

• Making communities more attractive to potential employees and businesses

• Recognizing historic villages, small-town lifestyles, homegrown entrepreneurs,

open spaces, and protected environments as assets critical to economic sustainability

• Building stronger, sustainable tax bases for municipal long-term sustainability

Trail Town programs can reimagine and reframe rural economies by capitalizing on their unique natural, cultural, and heritage assets while addressing the challenges of attracting and retaining younger residents, helping evolve and sustain agriculture industries, building new place-based entrepreneurial ventures tied to natural environment, and providing critical employment pathways for youth.

WHEATLAND & SCOTTSVILLE COMMUNITY VISION

Together, the Town of Wheatland and Village of Scottsville can serve as a Northern hub or gateway location for Genesee Valley Greenway State Park (GVGSP) access, facilitating growth in both resident and visitor use.

The GVGSP will be an anchor resource for the

development of a broader trail system across the community, enhancing bicycle and pedestrian connectivity between the GVGSP and local businesses and amenities.

This gateway as described in the Genesee Valley State Park Action Plan seamlessly integrates Canawaugus Park and Indian Allan Park with the GVGSP, providing for additional outdoor recreation experiences along Oatka Creek.

PROGRAM BENEFITS

The Trail Town Initiative allows for broader alignment with partners across the region to better realize local economic and community development objectives.

• Broadens community asset visibility - Through coordinated marketing, this initiative helps increase resident and visitor use of area experiential amenities. Through the GWA Chamber of Commerce (GWACC), members broaden business exposure through regional connectivity, such as inclusion on the Explore Genesee Valley platform, and the associated interactive map tool.

• Leverages investment and expands potential funding opportunities - Local entities expand opportunities through regional partnerships, associated economies of scale (i.e., coordination, consistency, sharing, infrastructure).

GVTTI GRANT AWARDED TO WHEATLAND AND SCOTTSVILLE COMMUNITIES

Trail Town Initiative grants fund projects that enhance visitor experience within the GVGSP and help neighboring communities benefit economically from proximity to the GVGSP.

In Spring 2022, a GVTTI Grant was awarded for a qualifying project submitted by the GWACC on behalf of a partnership of five collaborating organizations from the Town of Wheatland and Village of Scottsville area (GWACC, Genesee Country Village & Museum, Wheatland Historical Association, Village of Scottsville, and the Town of Wheatland). Each organization contributes matching funds and other services in support of the proposed Wheatland-Scottsville GVTTI Grant Project.

The Wheatland - Scottsville GVTTI grant award was the largest made by Parks & Trails New York for communities in the Genesee Valley region. The resultant project focuses on promoting, growing, and enhancing the experience of GVGSP users in the Wheatland and Scottsville area through development of aestheticallypleasing informational kiosks, helpful wayfinding signage, and improved trail access with emphasis on safety.

This project also promotes local amenities and businesses, such as the Genesee Country Village and Museum, through greater bicycle trail connectivity between the Greenway and the broader Wheatland and Scottsville communities that include supporting services and an emphasis on the area’s rich local history.

Coyle’s Pumpkin Ranch

Since the late 1950s, the Coyle family has been farming on the picturesque Oatka Trail in Mumford alongside the serene Oatka Creek. What started as a humble venture selling tomatoes and pumpkins and growing their own food blossomed into something extraordinary in 1988 when the farm stand expanded into Coyle’s Pumpkin Ranch with the help of Dan Coyle and his wife, Karen. Their children joined the farm, ensuring a truly immersive and unforgettable “fall-family-farm-fun” experience.

At Coyle’s Pumpkin Ranch, they offer an abundance of fun and vibrant pumpkins, gourds of all shapes and sizes,

Pumpkins,

and carving pumpkins to ignite your creativity. Step into a world of autumn beauty with their stunning collection of Mums, Indian corn, popcorn, straw bales, corn stalks, mini gourds, and large gourds. And on weekends, treat yourself to the delicious taste of cider, donuts, and apples.

They take great pride in their diverse selection of winter squash, with at least nine mouthwatering varieties, from Acorn to Hubbard. Join them in October for their exciting “Squash Tasting” events, announced on their Facebook page.

But the fun doesn’t stop there! Take a stroll through their corn stalk walk, bounce on their straw jump, and meet their friendly animals at the petting zoo. Let your imagination run wild as you stuff your very own scarecrow and enjoy a range of fun games. Coyle’s is all about family-friendly experiences, with no lines, no tickets, no admission fees—just pure enjoyment.

And don’t forget, they also sell tomatoes! Whether you need bushels for canning or individual ones, they have a variety from Roma to Beefsteak. Additionally, they offer peppers, sweet corn, onions, and other vegetables. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for the latest updates on vegetable sales and opening dates.

Karen Coyle says her proudest and favorite moments in the business come from raising their children in this wonderful, hardworking farm life, with a sense of accomplishment and unity that fills their hearts.

American Wayside

In early 2021, Adam Brenner was faced with the difficult decision to close his business due to the COVID19 pandemic, a reality that affected many business owners throughout the country. Brenner began to explore new potential opportunities, and when New York State chose to open adult cannabis use, Brenner had an epiphany. In September 2021, he opened American Wayside, an arts consignment store that focuses on local artists’ work and education surrounding CBD wellness.

Located in the Hamlet of Mumford in an old 1800s general storefront, American Wayside offers a safe and welcoming space for artists to share their work. Brenner says, “My goal is to help independent artists and entrepreneurs thrive within the local community.”

American Wayside also provides education surrounding cannabis use. Brenner is a passionate advocate for the many positive benefits cannabis can offer. In particular, he is a large proponent of CBD use for anxiety management, as he himself has relied on its healing properties for many years.

In addition to CBD products, American Wayside carries CBG, another derivative of the cannabis plant. CBG products are particularly helpful for American Wayside customers looking to relieve pain associated with arthritis and sore muscles, along with reducing inflammation.

As a Navy Veteran, Brenner is especially invested in supporting fellow shipmates and service members experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Facing such difficult struggles, Brenner shares that leaning toward cannabis can be a very helpful, natural option to find relief.

In less than two years, Brenner and American Wayside have helped countless people. “I really enjoy helping people find relief when they are struggling,” Brenner says. He is dedicated to working with each customer to best support their unique needs and concerns.

It is clear that American Wayside is a business with something for everyone. Whether you are a local artist looking to showcase your work, or you are looking to learn more about the health benefits of cannabis, American Wayside is the place to visit in Mumford.

The close-knit team also prioritizes focusing on the people buying a house, not on a house people are buying. Consumers can forget that this is a relationshipbased business, and according to Team Lisa, it is vitally important to remain client-centered: “Behind a house are people buying it,” Wasson says.

In particular, Wasson enjoys working with the veteran population and senior citizens looking for housing. As a proud veteran herself, Lisa aims to advocate for veterans who often face housing challenges after service. As a certified Senior Real Estate Specialist, Lisa hopes to be a strong resource for senior citizens with additional needs and concerns when selling a home.

At the end of the day, Team Lisa hopes to support the people within the house. Whether you are a firsttime buyer, you are selling a home, or you are looking to invest in real estate, Team Lisa of eXp Realty is ready to serve you.

As a breast cancer survivor, Wasson would also like to personally invite the community to join Team Lisa’s “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk” on October 22, 2023. Visit their website for additional information and to connect with the team at www.teamlisa.com.

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church

Experience the Warm and Welcoming Atmosphere

“A small congregation with a big heart,” St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church is driven by a mission to embrace everyone with open arms. As Canon Johnnie Ross, rector for both St. Andrew’s Church in Caledonia and Grace Church in Scottsville, affirms, “We are a welcoming and inclusive congregation, where we accept people as God created them.”

St. Andrew’s core focus is on building a strong community, where individuals can come together as human beings, regardless of their differences. Canon Johnnie emphasizes the importance of unity and mutual learning: Even if they see things differently, even disagree, people should come together, worship, and learn from each other. Their congregation embodies the spirit of gathering as around a Thanksgiving table, where everyone is invited to the community table, embracing unique perspectives and fostering spiritual connections.

Canon Johnnie says, “Jesus didn’t say come and understand; he said come and eat. In eating, we understand the other, learn about each other and

God.” By sharing meals together, we create a level playing field, engaging in conversations that transcend formalities. At St. Andrew’s, it’s not about addressing a priest; it’s about connecting on a personal level with another individual. God doesn’t care if someone is rich or poor, gay or straight, even a particular theological branch, Canon Johnnie says, “We are people. We are siblings,” and St. Andrew’s is dedicated to fostering a sense of community.

In addition to spiritual endeavors, St. Andrew’s actively supports the local community through various initiatives. Their self-serve community food cupboard operates with a focus on dignity and respect. It resembles a miniature shopping center, allowing people to contribute what they can and take what they need. They also collaborate with Caledonia-Mumford High School, sponsoring a scholarship program and organizing student art shows to celebrate the talent within the community. They also extend their love and support to South Africa, where they aid a school primarily for girls.

Canon Johnnie appreciates the “sweet community” of the Caledonia area, a true “slice of Americana,” where children ride bikes and neighbors genuinely care for one another. St. Andrew’s strives to “Love the community with the hope that the community will love us back, feed the hungry, welcome the stranger,” as Jesus would want.

Join the worship service every Sunday at 8:30 am and experience the sense of belonging that defines St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.

Adventures & Art

Unleash Your Creativity and Explore the World of Art!

Are you ready for an adventure that will ignite your creativity and leave you inspired? Look no further than Adventures & Art, the premier art studio and educational center in Caledonia. Led by talented Caledonia native, Emily Mattice Roll, Adventures & Art is a haven for artists, focusing on programming for 2-18-year-olds. Committed to nurturing creativity and providing a personal touch to every program, “Miss Emily” brings extensive experience and love for art to each class.

Adventures & Art traces its roots back to 2011 when a 14-year-old Emily, driven by her passion for art and armed with knowledge gleaned from her family’s small business, offered art classes in her parents’ home. Known as SPLAT: Super Phenomenal Little Artist Team, her classes quickly gained popularity through word of mouth. Today, Adventures & Art has evolved into a vibrant creative hub. Emily’s flexible curriculum includes the beloved SPLAT program along with newer offerings such as STEAM and Creative Play. Since 2015, Adventures & Art has expanded work with Drama Kids International of Rochester to provide an array of highquality performing arts programs.

Emily says it’s been “a blessing to watch my regular students blossom over the years. I love using my passion for creativity to help people, especially the kids and teens. They have so much fun developing their own artistic skills, confidence, friendships, public speaking and communication, responsibility, and more.” She believes in working together as a team and valuing each student’s ideas, interests, and goals. From small-scale projects to large-scale collaborations, students actively participate in the creative process, from brainstorming

ideas to bringing them to life. They not only gain essential life skills but also develop positive character traits that will serve them well in life.

Adventures & Art takes great pride in being involved in local events and festivals, including Caledonia’s Hometown Holidays, LivCo Walls Mural Festivals, and the Caledonia Trout Festival. Emily and her students actively contribute their time, talent, and enthusiasm to make these occasions extra special. From free walkin crafts during festivals to captivating outdoor art installations, Adventures & Art brightens the village and fosters community spirit. The variety of ages she interacts with, the opportunity to work on her own artwork, and being an active part of the community make Adventures & Art a dream come true.

Adventures & Art has exciting future plans. Emily envisions continued slow and steady growth, solidifying Adventures & Art as a Caledonia fixture. Improvements to the facility, expanding course offerings, and collaborating with experts in various art disciplines are all part of her plan. Emily plans to soon hire part-time teachers, providing opportunities for talented individuals and helping aspiring teenage artists develop their own paths as assistants or interns.

This year, Adventures & Art has an incredible lineup of workshops, events, and walk-in projects for local kids and teens. From the popular SPLAT and STEAM programs to Drama Kids, Creative Play, and Move & Groove, there’s something for everyone. “You can’t beat the small groups, creative environment, and all the special things we do together all year,” Emily says. In April 2024, watch for exciting Total Solar Eclipse activities, too!

Adventures & Art invites you to join the thriving community of artists and art enthusiasts and embark on a journey of self-expression, creativity, and personal growth. Discover the transformative power of art and let your imagination soar. Unleash your creativity and create your own adventure at Adventures & Art!
