The hardest decision of my life was to take my Cocker Spaniel for her final visit. Her first visit and her last, was to the Perry Vet Clinic. The love and genuine concern, helped to ease the pain. For Memorial Day this year, we went to the Veteran’s Store & bought a flag

holdercommemorating that our father had served in WWII. We discovered today that someone had stolen the flag & flag holder off of our father’s grave in [local] Cemetery. How sad that someone would steal from someone who served in a war so that we could all have freedom.

I was appalled by the actions of the owner of [local masonry]. I contacted him about some masonry work inside my home. We scheduled an appointment for 11:30. After 12 noon I called him and asked if he was coming or not. He told me he was there at 11:30 and took one look at my house and decided he wanted nothing to do with my business! How dare he judge whether a customer is worthy of his services or not! I hope others will steer clear of him and his business! I will find someone else who will appreciate my “cash” business!

By Susan Cook On Saturday Sept. 24, 2017, Girl Scouts from the Western New York council participated in the 48th annual Skills and Chills event at Camp Seven Hills Goodyear in Holland, NY. Skills and Chills is a yearly competition in the WNY council that allows Girl Scouts that are sixth-grade Cadettes through twelfth-grade Ambassadors to test their abilities and earn awards. A committee organizes the event and chooses judges who are subject matter experts in each field. Girls face off in events such as archery, orienteering, first aid, canoeing, tent pitching, log sawing, knots and lashing, and field sports.

Janet DePetrillo, Director of Outdoor Programs at the Girl Scouts of Western New York, stated, “The point of Skills and Chills is to bring all of our older girls together for an opportunity for team camaraderie, as well as individual competition. It’s really a bonding experience. They’re outdoors, it’s skill based and all about having fun!”

According to Troop 30646 co-leader Cindy Breeze, “Over the last year, we’ve probably practiced about forty-plus hours and we have a team of six with us today. We always work on outdoor skills when we do troop camping, plus girls have participated in many council events leading up to this. Many of my Girl Scouts did the Ready, Set, Camp program.”

DePetrillio commented, “This program really would not happen if not for the dedication of the group of women and men volunteers who sit on our committee. Together, they make this event happen. Without their skills, time, and talent, events like this where girls really come together and build their courage, confidence, and character wouldn’t occur. We are nothing without our girls and our volunteers.”

At the end of the evening, all the teams’ points were totaled and award ribbons were given out. Regardless of who won in each category, everyone cheered each other on and applauded the successes of their fellow Girl Scouts.

COMMON HALLOWEEN PHOBIAS Halloween is about embracing the scary and the spooky and enjoying all off the things that go “bump” in the night. Naturally, the holiday can drum up some fears and tap into peoples’ anxieties, especially when they come face-to-face with some of the symbols of Halloween. Some of these fears may be full-blown phobias.

A phobia is defined as an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something. Phobias can elicit feelings of dread and horror. In psychological terms, it is an anxiety disorder in which a person will go to great lengths to avoid a perceived danger. This danger is usually much greater in the person’s mind than in real life.

Several symbols of Halloween can be tied to phobias. A person with achluophobia may not enjoy the darkness of the Halloween night. Someone with coimetrophobia probably would not want to visit a cemetery. Coming in contact with a ghost would not be ideal for someone with phasmophobia.

Anyone with wiccaphobia might fear meeting up with a broom-riding witch. One of the more common phobias is arachnophobia, which is a fear of spiders. Spider decorations are common come Halloween, so people with arachnophobia may struggle on and around October 31.

While Halloween will never fall on the thirteenth day of the month, the number 13 has been linked to Halloween festivities. Many people view the number 13 to be a harbinger of bad luck. This is especially so for those with triskaidekaphobia, or the fear of the number 13.

Believe it or not, some people have a crippling fear of Halloween itself.

This phobia is called samhainophobia. which is the fear of Halloween or the fear of the festival of the dead. The term “samhainophobia” originates from “Samhain,” meaning summer’s end. Samhain was also the name of the festival celebrated by the Celts to mark the transition from summer to winter.

Thanks to the additional program funding, PathStone will help more families save money year after year, which allows them to better cover other essentials such as food, clothing and medical care.”␣Since 1976, more than seven million households nationwide have experienced energy efficient, financial, health and safety gains as a result of weatherization measures.

Early detection and improvements in treatment have markedly decreased the numbers of breast cancer-related fatalities. However, the therapies used to treat breast cancer can affect fertility and a woman’s ability to have a successful pregnancy. While pregnancy after cancer treatment is often safe for both the baby and mother, women should still educate themselves about the potential effects of breast cancer treatment with regard to pregnancy.

Infertility risks and preserving fertility One of the main concerns women have after surviving a breast cancer diagnosis is the risk of infertility. Both chemotherapy and hormone therapy can impact fertility and decrease the window of time a woman has to have children. This is a particular concern for young women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Chemotherapy can damage the ovaries, while tamoxifen, a commonly used hormone therapy, can cause irregular periods or stop the menstrual cycle altogether. Both of these treatments also may bring on natural menopause earlier than usual.

Young women can opt to have their unfertilized eggs or embryos frozen and stored prior to starting cancer treatment. It’s important to meet with a fertility specialist early on to discuss options.

Waiting game

An estimated 154,794 Americans are currently living with metastatic breast cancer, which occurs when cancer in the breast spreads to other parts of the body, most often the lungs, liver, bones, and brain. One quarter of this number represents those whose metastatic disease was found at diagnosis, while three-quarters have experienced metastatic recurrence of early stage disease. Approximately 20% to 30% of people first diagnosed with early stage disease will later develop advanced or metastatic breast cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, some doctors advise breast cancer survivors to wait at least two years after finishing treatment before they try to get pregnant. No research yet indicates that getting pregnant will make women more susceptible to the cancer coming back, nor will pregnancy increase the risks of birth defects or other long-term health concerns in children born to women who have had breast cancer.

Breastfeeding after cancer Depending on the type of breast cancer treatment they receive, many women are still able to breastfeed. However, if radiation or surgery has affected breast health, milk production may be affected and the baby may have difficulty latching on. Using a breast pump to express milk may be an option. However, commercially produced infant formulas also can provide the nutrition growing babies need.

Choosing to have children after breast cancer is a personal decision. Thanks to medical advancements, the possibility to conceive and raise a family is strong.
