PostBreast Cancer Exercise Pointers Surgery is often part of treating breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, doctors may recommend women undergo breast biopsies, lymph node biopsies or removals, lumpectomies, mastectomies, or breast reconstructions as part of their treatments. Surgery is often an effective way to treat breast cancer, but it does come with some side effects. The ACS notes that breast cancer surgery can affect how well women move their shoulders and arms, as pain and stiffness can weaken both areas. In addition, women’s ability to take deep breaths may be compromised after surgery, and they may have difficulty performing normal everyday activities like dressing, bathing and brushing their hair. Exercise may seem impossible after breast cancer surgery, but the ACS recommends women exercise after surgery to get their arms and shoulders moving again. The ACS notes that exercise can be especially important to women who underwent radiation therapy after surgery, as radiation can affect movement in the arm and shoulder long after treatment has ended. Regular exercise after radiation treatment can help women maintain mobility in their arms and shoulders. Exercising after breast cancer surgery can restore movement, but it’s important that women take into account the following pointers, courtesy of the ACS, before beginning a regimen. • Speak with your physician. Discuss exercise with your physician after undergoing surgery. Doctors may prescribe physical or occupational therapy, and some may even refer patients to cancer exercise specialists. Simply jumping back into your pre-surgery exercise routine can be dangerous, so bring up exercise immediately after surgery or during a follow-up visit. • Expect some tightness. Doctors may suggest women begin exercising a week or more after undergoing breast cancer surgery. It’s normal to feel some tightness in the chest and armpit after surgery, but the tightness will begin to subside as you exercise. Report any persistent tightness or pain to a physician immediately. • Some burning, tingling, numbness, or soreness may also occur. These symptoms may be felt on the back of the arm and/or on the chest wall and are often a result of the surgery irritating some of your nerves. The sensations of burning, tingling, numbness, and soreness may even increase a few weeks after surgery. But the ACS advises women to keep exercising through these symptoms unless they notice unusual swelling or tenderness, which should be reported to physicians right away. • Exercise after a warm shower. A warm shower may warm and relax muscles, making exercise less painful. • Dress appropriately. Comfortable, loose fitting clothing can make it easier to do exercises, as such attire is not restrictive.

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER As the seasons change, motorists must take steps to safeguard their vehicles, especially when the season changes from fall to winter. Each winter, many vehicles are subjected to sub-zero temperatures, snowfall and icy roads, and such conditions can take their toll on vehicles over time. Taking steps to prepare vehicles for winter weather is a vital step that can make cars and trucks safer for drivers and their passengers.

Most self-detected lumps that turn out to be breast cancer are found during normal routines such as showering or getting dressed, not during monthly breast self-exams. About 80% of breast cancers not discovered by mammography are discovered by women themselves. Knowing the landscape of your body and noticing slight changes is always wise. Becoming familiar with one’s breasts can help detect breast cancers that mammograms may miss. Compiled by the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester

ARPALER and Rochester Police Locust Club Honor Widows and Families of Deceased Officers By John Rabish The Association of Rochester Police and Area Law Enforcement Retirees (ARPALER) honored the memory of deceased law enforcement officers on September 15th at the Ridgemont Country Club. Families and friends gathered to recognize and celebrate the lives of their lost loved ones. A photo slide show was presented highlighting the lives of the law enforcement officers that have passed. This year’s deceased law enforcement officers that were celebrated included: Deputy Hawley “Lee” Knitter, Sergeant Robert Fisher, Officer Peter Walsh, Captain Harold F. Connor, Detective Louis Tacito, Officer Robert Turner, Captain George Reiss, Officer Donald Freeman, Assistant Chief Deputy James Wiesner, Sergeant Robert Kerr, Sergeant Dominic Felice, Lieutenant Carl Patricelli, and Detective Michael J. Chiello. Balloons were handed out to families to write messages to their lost loved ones and were then released into the heavens at the end of the luncheon program. ARPALER President, Joseph Cimino stated, “This event honors the men and women who served our community and also recognizes the sacrifices that their families made over the years. There is an everlasting connection we make with every officer and their families. It is a privilege to recognize them.” Rochester Police Locust Club President, Michael Mazzeo added, “We are fortunate in this profession because in law enforcement we have two families. Our own brothers and sisters in blue and their personal family members as well.”

About ARPALER The Association of Rochester Police and Area Law Enforcement Retirees (ARPALER) was formed in 1989 to serve retired law enforcement and fight for their rights and benefits, as well as assist current law enforcement efforts in the Greater Rochester area. ARPALER, located at 1425 Lexington Avenue, Rochester, also takes part in charitable contributions every year. For more information, go to arpaler.com or call 585-254-2510. Are expired medications still safe? It is 2 a.m. and that cough and stuffy nose you have been battling is still keeping you up. You reach for the nighttime cold relief medicine only to find it expired a few months ago. If you take a dose to ease your symptoms, will you be putting yourself at risk? This situation is a relatively common occurrence. Many medicine cabinets are stocked with over-the-counter drugs as well as prescription medications that may be past their expiration dates. It is a good idea to routinely discard expired medicines, but if you happen to take a drug that has passed its expiration date, you will most likely suffer no ill effects. According to the Harvard Medical School Family Health Guide, the expiration date on a medicine is not the dates when a drug becomes hazardous. Rather, it marks the period of time after which a drug company can no longer guarantee the efficacy of the medication. Since 1979, drug manufacturers selling medications in the United States have been required by the Food and Drug Administration to stamp an expiration date on their products. This is the date until which the manufacturer can still guarantee full potency of the drug. Expiration dates also may be a marketing ploy. Francis Flaherty, a retired FDA pharmacist, has said drug manufacturers put expiration dates on products for marketing purposes rather than scientific reasons. It doesn’t make financial sense to a company to have products on the shelves for years. Therefore, most drug manufacturers will not do long-term testing on products to confirm if they will be effective 10 to 15 years after manufacture.

The U.S. military has conducted their own studies with the help of the FDA. FDA researchers tested more than 100 over-the-counter and prescription drugs. Around 90 percent were proven to still be effective long past the expiration date -- some for more than 10 years. Drugs that are stored in cool, dark places have a better chance of lasting because the fillers used in the product will not separate or start to break down as they might in a warm, humid environment. Storing medicines in the refrigerator can prolong their shelf life. Although a pharmacist cannot legally advise consumers to use medication past an expiration date, most over-the-counter pain relievers and drugs in pill form should still be fine. Certain liquid antibiotics and drugs made up of organic materials can expire faster than others. For those who still want to err on the safe side, routinely clean out medications from cabinets once they expire. However, if an expired medication is taken by mistake, there’s little need to worry about potentially adverse effects.

Aging Well With Exercise You can get better and stronger at any age. Research shows that an appropriate exercise program can improve your muscle strength and flexibility as you age. Progressive resistance training, where muscles are exercised against resistance that gets more difficult as strength improves, has been shown to help prevent frailty. Your bones want you to exercise. Osteoporosis, or weak bones, affects more than half of Americans over the age of 54. Exercises that keep you on your feet, like walking, jogging or dancing, and exercises using resistance such as weight lifting, can improve bone strength or reduce bone loss.

With deep respect and honored to know an honest person with integrity, Rose Fudge, who kept her word. Karen A HUGE thank you to everyone that attended Tom Kretschmer’s Celebration of Life on August 26 and for those who made it happen. Tim Petrie, for donating the meat, supplies and your time. Monro Muffler for the food donations and for closing the Batavia shop a couple hours early so that everyone could attend. Darrell and his lovely wife, Jenn Olsen and Michelle Farina, thank you all for the food donations. We appreciate each and every one of y’all. The

evening was spent remembering Tom’s life, laughing, crying and reminiscing the many pictures that were shared. THANK YOU ALL for showing Tiny’s family and friends your support, but more importantly, your love and respect!

Thank you to everyone who came to my garage sale. As I had stated, 25% of the proceeds went to the Red Cross for hurricanes Harvey and Irma relief funds. The sale total was $212.25 and $6 was directly donated so I sent the Red Cross $60. Thank you!

constantly disrupted by the loud honking of the air horns of the trucks as ONE family’s unsupervised kids repeatedly beg for the drivers to honk! It goes on almost all day every day! People don’t appreciate the CONSTANT blaring of these air horns! Have some respect for your neighborhood and supervise your children!

To the person who shot my pet skunk! He was a BELOVED member of our family, and will be missed. Rest in Peace Stinky-boo-boo. We live in a residential village street that has large trucks up and down it all day due to a business at the end. Many families and senior citizens who reside here are

P roceed s to benefit:

I recently visited the bottle return machines at my local grocery store at 1 p.m. on a Sunday. It was busy. I had two small plastic grocery shopping bags with less than a dollar’s worth of returns. There were two individuals at the machines - one had large three leaf bags full of cans and the other person had a cart overflowing with cans and bottles. They both looked at me with my small amount and just kept putting the cans in. I have let people go ahead of me before when they just have a small amount of cans/bottles. It is

Thank you to the Tops employee who waited for a riding cart and when one became available brought it to me in the pharmacy where I sat as I could not stand for any length of time. You really went above and beyond.

Many other countries have far WORSE things to have to live with daily. So embrace the American Flag and remember why there is one. Thank God for America! And God Bless and Protect ALL of Us in America! I personally PRAY TO GOD, EVERY DAY, for ALL of us IN AMERICA. Please join me.

If it wasn’t for The American Flag, NO ONE would have any rights to protest ANYTHING in America! Nor would ANYONE have any rights AT ALL in America. I love America, even with its good, bad, and ugly happenings; America is STILL the Best Nation for everyone, civilized people. But you MUST obey laws here as there are laws in all other countries, too.

just common courtesy to say, “Would you like to go ahead with that small amount?” There is supposed to be a limit for how many cans you can turn in at a time - but it is not enforced. Wish more people could just be considerate. I recently “won” a $600 grand prize. After 4 months of attempting and failing to gain further information and make arrangements for a trip that I would be interested in, I was informed that the deadline was today and I seemed to be limited to only 1 of 2 different sports venues, neither of which interested me or amounted to anywhere near $600. Needless to say the deadline is here and I am not interested in what little was offered so I will not be able to partake of my grand prize. Nice!?!??? I don’t understand why people leave upholstered furniture by the road,

especially with the rainy weather we’ve been having this summer. Don’t they know about the Penny Saver’s Give and Take? There are many people who would be happy to pick up decent furniture if they know it’s available for free before it becomes waterlogged sitting along the road. Or take it to the Salvation Army or the area’s ReStore locations which benefit Habitat for Humanity. Thank you for finally firing the program manager who was bullying and harassing the employees for 4 years. It’s not a healthy work environment and caused a lot of stress in their lives. The sad thing is that human resources had proof from many employees and chose to wait 4 years to fire he/ she. More info should be given to employees so no one has to go through this for so long. Word of advice, when there is proof REACT ASAP!
