DEAR DR. ROACH: What’s the best way to obtain and maintain healthy, white sclera? Mine appears to be a light, offwhite gray. -- M.T. ANSWER: Sclerae -- the whites of the eyes -- tend to thin with age and reveal the darker-gray choroid underneath. This is benign and common, but I don’t know of any way to prevent or reduce it.

Scleral color changes can happen with rare diseases like osteogenesis imperfecta, and some collagen diseases. The sclera also can change color as a result of scleritis (inflammation of the sclera), and this often happens in relation to Wegener’s disease or rheumatoid arthritis. The bottom line, though, is: If you are having no symptoms, it’s overwhelmingly likely that these changes are the benign form. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been diagnosed with positional vertigo. My doctor has me doing Cawthorne head exercises. Have you heard of these? Do they work? -- M.M.S. ANSWER: Vertigo is an abnormal sense of motion while still.

Many people describe it as a “spinning” sensation, but others feel it differently. The most common cause probably is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, and rehabilitation exercises, such as the Cawthorne-Cooksey exercises, are very effective. Although medication is frequently prescribed, I recommend strongly against long-term use of medication, which can slow down or stop healing.

Although you can do the exercises on your own, I recommend learning how to do them properly and safely with an occupational or physical therapist.

ROACH: How long do shin splints last? Is there anything besides ice that will make them go away faster? My left shin started hurting a little more than three weeks ago. I ran on it once or twice, then I stopped, but it still hurts. Is this normal?

When do you think I can run on it? I did a longer run on a flat path, and normally I do it with hills, so I thought maybe that was the problem, but three weeks seems like too long. -- H.O. ANSWER: Pain in the shin bone (tibia) is common in runners, but the hard part is distinguishing between “shin splints,” properly called “medial tibial stress syndrome,” and a stress fracture of the tibia. A stress fracture usually has a discrete area of tenderness, but MTSS has more diffuse tenderness. An X-ray may be needed to be sure it isn’t a stress fracture, since the treatment is very different. A runner with a stress fracture needs to avoid impact activities like running, whereas MTSS usually gets better with just lower running mileage.

In your case, the degree of pain is higher than I would expect after three weeks. This no-cost program, funded by NYS Homes and Community Renewal, helps incomeeligible homeowners in suburban Monroe County and focuses on households with senior citizens, persons with disabilities and households with children.␣Eligibility is based only on income and does not penalize for assets. Seniors living on a pension and social security will quite often qualify.

Income guidelines are: Family size of 1=$27,597 Family size of 2=$36,088 Family size of 3=$44,580 The program's professionally trained crews use computerized energy audits and advanced diagnostic equipment to identify energy-saving strategies in single-family, multi-family and mobile homes. Cost-effective weatherization measures and those measures that are essential for health and safety are then performed at no cost for eligible households.␣“The Weatherization Assistance Program helps families with limited incomes save an average of $238 a year on their energy bills,” said Chris Brandau, Director - PathStone Weatherization Program. “Common home improvements include additional insulation, air sealing and heating system repair or replacement.

Thanks to the additional program funding, PathStone will help more families save money year after year, which allows them to better cover other essentials such as food, clothing and medical care.”␣Since 1976, more than seven million households nationwide have experienced energy efficient, financial, health and safety gains as a result of weatherization measures.

Debbie was a loving and devoted mother, sister, aunt and friend and her grandchildren were her passion and delight. She was always active and enjoyed time with her partner who exposed her to new and exciting adventures. Filled with compassion and interest for others, Debbie made friends easily and opened her arms to everyone she sensed needed it. She loved to host and entertain and enjoyed crafts, line-dancing, interior decorating, family gatherings and spoiling her grand kids. Debbie was quick with a smile and young at heart. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Friends called on Thursday, November 2nd, from 4-7pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 15 & 20A, Livonia, NY where her Memorial Service was held on Friday, November 3rd, at 10:00am.

Zonta Club of Batavia Genesee Holds 7th Annual Holiday Festival

The Zonta Club of Batavia is closing in on its seventh year of hosting a holiday festival along with the Z-Club of Batavia High School! The Zonta Holiday Festival will be held November 11th and 12th, from 10:00-4:00 pm at Batavia Downs, 8315 Park Road in Batavia. The festival will feature over 130 artisans, artists, crafters, home-based businesses, entrepreneurs, face painting, caricature artist, entertainment, a visit from Santa both days, food, fun and much, much more! Admission is free.

Zonta Club proceeds from the festival will fund scholarships presented to graduating seniors in Genesee County. ZClub earnings will help to educate women in Madagascar; the money that they raise can help a woman to earn a four-year college degree.

The Zonta Club of Batavia, Genesee County has been in existence since May of 1958. The Club was given the Women of Distinction Peace Award at the 2017 YWCA Awards Night for their work with ‘Saying No to Domestic Violence’. “Zonta Club went above and beyond to create many tote bags filled with toiletries and other items as a way to pamper and truly care for victims of abuse,” Jean Walton said. “The club has certainly given many forms of peace to this

While it’s important that everyone visit their physicians at least once a year for a checkup, seniors may need to see their physicians more frequently than other age groups.

When visiting the doctor, it is easy for anyone to miss important components of what the doctor is saying, and it’s just as easy to misunderstand certain instructions or medication information.

Seniors who bring companions along to appointments with their physicians can reduce the risk of misunderstanding advice or diagnoses given by their doctors.

Data from U.S. News and World Report states that about one-third of seniors still living on their own take a companion with them to their routine doctor’s office visits. Companions are typically spouses, but they can include children or other family members as well.

Patients may find there are many advantages to bringing someone along to an appointment. And companions may want to learn more about patients’ goals at each appointment prior to going along so they can prepare and know how to help during the appointment.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES ASSISTANT to assist the Director in the provision of activities and services through the Student Union and other Campus Life facilities. Successful candidate will need to be capable of carrying out a variety of tasks with a minimum amount of supervision, versatile and creative, possess sound organizational skills, and capable of handling a high degree of administrative responsibility. An Associate’s Degree and a minimum of one year of experience in Student Activities, Student Union, Campus Life, or Residence Life are required. The position is a ten month appointment from August 1 to May 31 anticipated to work 5:00-10:00 p.m.

Monday through Thursday. Occasional weekend hours may be required.
