BREAST CANCER TREATMENT Radiation therapy is a cancer treatment that uses high-energy x-rays or other types of radiation to kill cancer cells or keep them from growing.

There are two types of radiation therapy: • External radiation therapy uses a machine outside the body to send radiation toward the cancer.

• Internal radiation therapy uses a radioactive substance sealed in needles, seeds, wires, or catheters that are placed directly into or near the cancer.

The way the radiation therapy is given depends on the type and stage of the cancer being treated. External radiation therapy is used to treat breast cancer. Internal radiation therapy with strontium-89 (a radionuclide) is used to relieve bone pain caused by breast cancer that has spread to the bones. Strontium-89 is injected into a vein and travels to the surface of the bones. Radiation is released and kills cancer cells in the bones.

Many women know that a lump, pain or some other abnormality in the breast may be indicative of breast cancer.

But a rash, redness or swelling may also be linked to a rare form of breast cancer known as inflammatory breast cancer.

Inflammatory breast cancer, or IBC, accounts for roughly 1 to 5 percent of all breast cancers in the United States. The symptoms of IBC can differ from symptoms of other forms of breast cancer, and a rash-like appearance may be part of it.

IBC is a fast-growing breast cancer that infiltrates the skin and lymph vessels of the breast. When IBC is present, no distinct tumor or lump can be felt and isolated in the breast.

Instead, earlier symptoms include the appearance of a rash or small irritation that may be mistaken for an insect bite.

Over time, the irritation can become more red, swollen and warm. Other changes to the breast skin may occur, including nipple inversion or flattening, a pitted appearance to the skin or dimpling. This dimpling is caused by a buildup of fluid in the breast that’s due to cancer cells blocking the lymph vessels.

This prevents the fluid from draining normally.

IBC is a very fast-moving cancer. By the time symptoms are discovered, IBC may already have advanced to Stage 3, necessitating aggressive treatment. This usually includes a combination of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and hormone treatments.

Breast cancer comes in many different forms and can present in various ways. Never overlook any abnormality on or around the breast.

DID YOU KNOW? While certain breast cancer risk factors, including gender and age, are beyond women’s control, the American Cancer Society notes that certain factors are related to personal behaviors. Alcohol consumption is one such lifestyle-related risk factor for breast cancer.

Compared with nondrinkers, women who consume between two and five alcoholic drinks per day have about a 1.5 times greater risk of developing breast cancer than women who abstain from alcohol. A woman’s risk of developing breast cancer increases only slightly compared to nondrinkers if she has just one alcoholic beverage per day.

Weight is another breast cancer risk factor that women can control. Women who are overweight or obese have a greater risk of developing breast cancer than those who are not. Prior to menopause, womens’ ovaries make most of their estrogen, with fat tissue making just a small amount.

But womens’ ovaries stop making estrogen when they enter menopause, at which time fat tissue produces most of their estrogen. Having excessive fat tissue can increase estrogen levels and raise a woman’s risk for breast cancer.

Maxim Spa and Salon hosted its 3rd annual Porch PETicure event in conjunction with National Dog Day last month and raised $1,089 for Verona Street Animal Society.

For every porch pedicure that took place at the Park Ave. Salon between August 23 and 26, Maxim donated a portion of the proceeds to Verona, which will use these funds to purchase play yard supplies, provide people in need with spay/neuter vouchers and support foster programs, including training and medical, and microchips for all animals.

Due to growing shelter needs and the community’s desire to help, Maxim has set a goal to double its donation next year.

Owners Toni Allocco and Rachele Muscari would like to thank everyone who supported the event and contributed.

Next year’s event is already planned for the end of August.

Thank you to all the local groups that put on some of the best barbeques and dinners this summer, whether they prepared it themselves or had it catered. It’s really great to change things up and help out local groups with their fundraising efforts. Faith UMC is having one more of their barbeques before turkey dinners like Rush UMC’s that benefits Rhaft and other dinners begin the fall season.

The truth is that many bicyclists are a danger to themselves and others. When they approach pedestrians from behind, I’ve never known a bicyclist to call out a warning or ring a bell.

Instead they fly by too close and at dangerous speeds. I no longer walk on the canal path with friends or my dog because of this. Bicyclists often speed on private property not their own such as streets in a condominium community

It always makes me feel good when I help the various local groups out with their fundraising efforts. I’m greeted warmly and fed a delicious dinner. Sometimes I go home with some other goodies.

These groups, whether churches, scouts, etc. are always reaching out to serve both our community and the global community in various ways and projects. Thank you again to them and all of you who support them.

You interviewed me for a position and spent over five minutes thanking me for my time and how I was so valued for considering them...that I’d be informed immediately, hired or not, stressing I would not be forgotten. And how disturbing it was for him to interview for jobs then not have the employer get back to them. I wasn’t hired but never heard from the company again. I was ignored despite sending a thank you card and leaving HR messages twice. Since you also spent the better part of an hour touring the facility with me and

answering my questions, I’m wondering what I did to deserve the snub. Or do you do this to various prospective employees?

It was 4 maybe 5 years ago and (local town) decided it needed to help improve hiking trails. What did it do? It hired someone to deforest a hillside, and cut it down to make a switch back path down to “nowhere” to increase activity.

They spent over 2 million dollars on this project, and to this very day, I have never seen anyone using it. I pass it at least 4 times a week. They did however cut some of the overgrown weeds this year.

Meanwhile the residents who treasured the privacy of the woods in their backyard were left wide open to a major highway. Another waste of taxpayer’s money and a lesson on how to ruin the environment.

Historic Batavia Cemetery Halloween Candlelight Ghostwalk Join us for some spooky fun on Saturday, October 21st, when the Batavia Cemetery Association will host a candlelight guided ghost walk through the Historic Batavia Cemetery on Harvester Avenue in Batavia. Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce held the second event of its 2017-2018 inaugural CLIMB program with a morning at G-S Plastic Optics in downtown Rochester, followed by a trip to Three Brothers Wineries in Geneva.

CLIMB stands for Chamber Leadership Initiative: Mentoring for Business, a tenmonth experiential program designed to connect young professionals with business leaders across multiple sectors of the Finger Lakes economy. Thirty-one participants representing 28 Rochester-area companies are part of the inaugural cohort.

The day began with a panel entitled “The Future Is Bright”, featuring Ed White, AIM Photonics Corporate Outreach Executive; Alexis Vogt, Chair and Associate Professor of Optics at Monroe Community College; Will Beich, G-S Plastic Optics Director of Sales and Marketing; and Andy Germanow, CEO of Germanow-Simon Corporation. It was followed by a tour of the G-S Plastic Optics facility in its historic renovated building at 408 St. Paul Boulevard.

CLIMB Participant and O’Connell Electric Director of Marketing John Miller said, “We had a great morning learning about optics, photonics, and imaging. I’m proud to know that there are companies representing innovation and technology on a global scale right here in Rochester and representing the talent that we offer to the world.”

The CLIMB group also visited Three Brothers Wineries, receiving candid business advice from owners Luanne and David Mansfield, as well as a behind-thescenes tour of the busy facility during harvest time.

John Loury, president of CAUSE+ EFFECT Strategy and Marketing and CLIMB participant said, “We got to see some amazing things that a family winery is doing to help their community and further the wine and beer industry in the State of New York.” It helps put us in a great state of mind as a young startup company and Rochester Chamber member.”

CLIMB gives participants an inside look at local success stories directly from top executives and their teams through nine signature events. Community and political leaders will also weigh in on crucial issues facing the Finger Lakes region. The next event in October focuses on the Genesee Brewing Company, as well as efforts of the Rochester-Monroe AntiPoverty Initiative.
