Add fresh flavor to grilled chicken Backyard barbecues provide the perfect opportunity for grillmasters to experiment with their favorite foods. Those who want to give grilled chicken a tasty twist can whip up this recipe for “Citrus Recado Chicken Breasts” from Eric Treuille and Birgit Erath’s “Grilling” (DK Publishing).

Citrus Recado Chicken Breasts Serves 4 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar 2 tablespoons canola oil 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1/4 cup orange juice 4 boneless chicken breast halves, slashed (see below) Salt Avocado Mango Salsa (optional) Combine garlic, chili powder, oregano, thyme, cumin, coriander, pepper, cinnamon, sugar, oil, lime juice, and orange juice. Add chicken and toss to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes, turning once.

Grill according to instructions below. Sprinkle with salt. Serve hot with avocado mango salsa if you prefer.

Outdoor grill: Grill skin-side down over medium-hot coals until skin is crisp, 7 minutes. Turn and continue grilling until chicken is opaque with no trace of pink, another 5 minutes.

Indoor grill: Preheat broiler. Broil skin-side up until skin is crisp, 7 minutes. Turn and continue cooking until chicken is opaque with no trace of pink, another 5 minutes.

To slash the chicken breasts: With a sharp knife, cut 3 parallel slashes through the skin, about 1/4-inch deep.

Marinate chicken up to 2 hours in advance. Cover and refrigerate, turning several times in marinade.

Avocado Mango Salsa Makes 12/3 cups 1 mango, finely diced 1 avocado, peeled, halved, pitted, and finely diced 1/2 red onion, finely chopped 1 red chile, seeded and finely chopped 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons finely chopped mint leaves Salt Tabasco® Combine mango, avocado, onion, chile, lime juice, vinegar, oil, and mint.

Add salt and Tabasco® to taste. Cover and let stand for 30 minutes at room temperature to allow flavors to blend. Serve chilled or at room temperature.

To the person or people who took my 2 year old little girl's backpack in the parking lot of the [local church] on July 4th, I hope you enjoy my 2 year old's things, her baby blanket, her diapers and her tablet. She was asking for her things the rest of the night and will continue to for weeks. You are disgusting, and it is a shame you could not just turn it in to lost and found.

Your Different generations can learn and benefit from one another In the not-so-distant past, extended families frequently lived in close proximity to one another. Such families shared meals and experiences and essentially grew up together.

Nowadays, families separate for various reasons, such as job opportunities and cost of living concerns.

While there are advantages to spreading out, there are also some disadvantages, namely that grandparents and grandchildren may not see one another frequently enough. Even though people of different age groups may not entirely have the same interests, the interactions between generations can benefit both young people and their aging relatives.

Finding renewed vigor Senior living and active lifestyle communities provide invaluable care and amenities for seniors.

While being around like-minded individuals can be handy, it’s also limiting. Seniors who continue to age in place in mixed-age communities can extract joy from watching youthful children and young adults growing up, playing and socializing. Being around multiple generations also can spark interesting conversation, and all parties involved can learn something from one another.

Planning for the future Younger generations may not understand the concept of “hard times” or “doing without” like a person who has lived through various ups and downs. Passing along advice about economic cycles, saving for the future and maintaining stability is one area of expertise at which many seniors excel.

Practicing interpersonal skills All the technological savviness in the world cannot compensate for the power of strong interpersonal skills. Being able to address a group of people or speak one-on-one is essential in the workplace and in life. When younger generations speak to older adults, they may become

stronger at verbal discourse and have greater perspective of different points of conversation.

Learning new technology Younger generations can impart knowledge of technological devices to older adults. People with skills are usually happy to share their knowledge. Even if seniors aren’t ready to purchase tablets or smartphones, they may be excited to have their grandchildren teach them about the latest gadgets.

Providing sense of purpose Both seniors and younger generations can realize a greater sense of purpose when interacting with one another. That person may be the reason the other one greets the day with a smile. Visits from grandchildren can reduce the liklihood of isolation and depression in older adults. And younger generations can discover the benefits of personal social interaction rather than communicating exclusively through social media apps.

Fostering intergenerational connections is a great way to broaden social circles, improve communication and learn new things.

Is It OK to Crush Pills?

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like to know your opinion about whether it is OK to crush up different psychiatric medications and put them in a small container of water to drink. This doesn’t seem very safe to me, but I’d like an expert opinion. -- Anon.

ANSWER: I’ll give you my answer, and also tell you where to find an expert opinion. My answer is that many people have trouble swallowing pills, and that most pills can be crushed and taken with water or mixed in with food. Your local pharmacy sells pill crushers, or you can get a mortar and pestle.

While you are at the pharmacy, ask your pharmacist. He or she can look at your medications and tell you whether it is safe for you to crush your particular medications. Slow-release medications, of which there are many, should not be crushed.

Often, the bottle will tell you, but ask your pharmacist for the expert opinion. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What are your thoughts about the MiraDRY procedure to get rid of underarm sweat? Is it safe not to have sweat under the arms? -- S.J. ANSWER: MiraDRY is the brand name of a microwave device designed to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). This is not normal underarm sweating, but a rare condition of abnormal, drenching sweat that greatly interferes with social activities. It is currently used only for underarms -- not hands, feet or face, the other most common places for localized hyperhidrosis.

According to several published papers, the microwaves heat up the water in the sweat glands, destroying them, while the skin itself is cooled. The published success rates (at reducing sweating to “never noticeable” or “tolerable”) are very high, as are patient satisfaction results. Side effects included swelling, redness and temporary numbness.

This is a new procedure, but it appears to have promise in the treatment of excess sweating. I also found a very helpful website at www.sweathelp.org. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What causes foot drop? Is there any cure for it? -- B.H. ANSWER: Foot drop is most commonly caused by damage to the peroneal nerve, which wraps around the fibula, one of the two bones of the leg (anatomically, only the lower leg is called the leg, as opposed to the thigh). The nerve can be damaged from trauma, such as during surgery or prolonged hospitalization. Leg casts and prolonged positioning with stress on the nerve, such as squatting, also can damage the nerve. Most people describe numbness but not pain, and the dropped foot can cause people to trip, so people with this condition learn to flex the hip to lift the thigh up higher.

The diagnosis can be confirmed by electrical studies of the nerves.

Treatment usually is to prevent further damage, with a splint to keep the foot flexed upward. A physical therapist can prescribe helpful exercises. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.

Smart watering conserves water and saves money Start early. FAIRPORT David Marsh, A Life of Courage Born in 1940, David Marsh contracted rheumatic fever at age six leading to many hospital stays and a life bound to a wheelchair. However, due to the compassion of the Fairport community, he was able to realize many of his dreams before his 1964 death. The doors of the sleek, modern building open, and the past rushes forward to greet you. Visitors are not only transported to another time, but for many of them, to another culture, as well. This is the Ganondagan State Historic Site, a National Historic Landmark. In the 17th century, the Ganondagan Site in Victor, New York was home to a Seneca village. Now, throughout the Seneca Art & Culture Center, new in 2015, colorful and carefully preserved artifacts are displayed, often with current Native American art, baskets, beading and other works displayed alongside artifacts dating back to the 1600s. Some such items are permanent while other artifacts are on loan from such museums as the Smithsonian. Grab a pair of headphones at the front desk or bring your own as many of the displays are interactive. Several displays also have recordings of the Seneca language spoke aloud, giving new life to the voices of long ago.

Clothing, photos, baskets, personal items such as combs, beadwork, art, recorded dances and music and many more items will surround you as you enter the gallery. There is also information on the Ganondagan initiative to reintroduce white corn, a corn species native to the area. New to the gallery this year, the exhibit entitled Hodinöhsö:ni’ Women: From the Time of Creation, reveals and celebrates the matrilineal society of the “Haudenosaunee” or Iroquois, a society in which women enjoyed many, if not more, of the freedoms that today’s American women enjoy, hundreds of years ago.

A small theater welcomes guests with a film retelling the Iroquois Creation story, available upon request. The film is about 15 minutes long and is beautiful, engaging and colorful. Up a hill behind the center, accessible via stairs, stands a full-size long house replica filled with reproduction items that accurately reflect Native American long house life during the 17th century. As in the center, knowledgeable Friends of the Ganondagan describe everyday life, relate historic events and answer questions.

The Ganondagan State Historic Site also recently held the Friends of Ganondagan’s 27th Annual Native American Dance & Music Festival on the weekend of July 28th & 29th. Amy Blum PR described the festivities. “…the festival brought out visitors of every age from down the road and across the world.

With Site Manager Peter Jamison as M.C., festival attendees got a full day of sights, sounds, and tastes: Allegany River Dancers in full regalia led by singer Bill Crouse (Seneca); traditional artisan demonstrators; traditional storytelling; headliner Gary Farmer & The Troublemakers; the second annual juried Hodinöhsö:ni’ Art Show;

family programming at the Wegmans Discovery Tent; vendors at the popular Native American Arts Market; tours of the Bark Longhouse replica and the Seneca Art & Culture Center; guided trail walks; a songwriter’s circle; wampum display; food; and raffle opportunities.

The Allegany River Dancers performed songs and dances such as the Women’s Dance; Stick Dance; old-time War Dance; Smoke Dance; an intertribal Alligator Dance; and more. A “Friendship Dance” led the dancers out of the tent, encouraging audience members to join in, shaking hands in peace and friendship while weaving through the aisles.

Hailing from New Mexico, the multiple-recorded band Gary Farmer & the Troublemakers made their Ganondagan debut at the main Performance Tent to bring their blues-y music—which also took a departure into rock & roll, jazz, reggae, and soul— to the stage. Inspired by the music, a number of audience members got out of their seats for some spontaneous dancing. Gary Farmer is also known as an actor with more than 100 film and TV appearances to his credit.

Visitors Inside the Seneca Art & Culture Center got the opportunity to get up-close to the three master artisan demonstrators Samantha Jacobs (moccasin-making), Mary Jacobs (beaded needle cases), and Carrie Hill (basket-making). Each shared their knowledge—often passed down through generations—asked for audience participation, and passed around samples of their work, leaving time for audience questions.

Over the two festival days, more than 250 volunteers gave 1,767 hours of their time in numerous ways to help make the 2018 Festival a grand success. The Native American Dance & Music Festival is the signature event for the nonprofit Friends of Ganondagan.”

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • • • • • • • • • • 1.

8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf 2 cups half-and-half 4 egg yolks 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the

toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter.

3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly.

When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed.

4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.

5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream.

Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half.

Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.
