The end of the school year is coming. It is time to thank those bus drivers for picking your children up each morning and bringing them back home safely. Don’t forget, every day there could be a different challenge, being weather, behavior, or traffic issues. Your bus drivers address every situation in a professional and thoughtful manner in order to provide the greatest safety for your children.

Hayley Parker and Shanna Sykes at Honeoye Collective and Rotarians contributed funds to help support U.N.I.F.Y.’s free tutoring for HCS seniors who desire a little extra support during their last critical year. All the groups work to help the community in many ways.

The two women have as one of their focuses to provide different types of movement, dance and yoga and to provide connections to various groups within the community. Their source of support resulted from the proceeds of two of their classes on April 22nd.

Rotary, over many years, has endeavored to help the community by providing help with libraries, student readings, and a handicapped sidewalk at Sandy Bottom Park, etc.

This past week a young man named, Aaron, who works for the telephone company, came to my home to repair my wall phone.

Unfortunately my phone is way out of date. In other words it was useless. This kind young man checked with the stock room and found me a new phone, returned to my home later that day and installed the new wall phone. You are a special person, Aaron, to be so kind to me. your little dog picks a fight with a bigger dog, or any dog for that matter, and your dog is hurt, you are to blame. If your dog runs out in traffic and is hit by a car, you are to blame. Our pets are part of the family and part of pet ownership is to ensure their safety.

We saw this woman purposely swerve her car to squash a turtle. How cruel can you be? What goes around comes around. It was an ugly thing to do to a poor defenseless creature. He wasn’t hurting anything and nor was it a menace to anything. Sickening how people can be so cruel.

If You Love Them, Leash Your Pets - I am an animal lover and I will never understand how people who claim to love their pets will let them wander off leash without any concern for the safety of their animals.

Regardless of how well trained your pet may be, it only takes a moment for the unexpected to happen. If you cannot be bothered to leash your dog, when something happens to your “beloved” pet, you have no one to blame but yourself. I’ve noticed this negligence mostly with owners of small dogs, which could be considered the most vulnerable dogs. If

My advice for others is to keep your hands on your wallet when dealing with this new cable provider. In addition, there are ads running this week that they will not be carrying some channels such as Fox Sports, FX, National Geographic, and others.

I know you just got your new LOUD and ANNOYING toy (ATV) to play with in your residential neighborhood, but are you aware, it is against the law to ride your ATV on residential streets, sidewalks and on village property. Be warned, stop or be stopped and fined.

Each year qualified high school juniors are selected to participate in Empire Girls State, a week-long, educational experience with hands-on workshops on government and the political process, designed to create a government from the county to the state level. This year’s program will be held July 2 - 8 at SUNY Brockport.

Empire Girls State is an educational Americanism program developed to offer a better perspective of the practical government operations and to emphasize the integral part that individuals have within a democratic government. This program, which has been accredited by the New York State Board of Regents, is a non-partisan attempt to teach the love of “God and Country” to America’s youth.

Two area high school juniors who are both scholar athletes and rank prestigiously at the top of their class have been selected to attend. Camryn Arthur of LeRoy and Kimberly Davis of Pavilion are being sponsored by the local Auxiliary Unit #576 of LeRoy. Camryn is Junior Class President at LeRoy Central and plays both varsity soccer and varsity tennis while Kimberly, who attends Pavilion Central High School, is Junior Class Treasurer and plays for her school’s varsity soccer, basketball and track teams.

The Empire Girls State program creates a mythical 51st state allowing students to learn the privileges and responsibilities of citizenship in a democratic society. These young women will work tirelessly throughout the week as their participation allows them a greater understanding of their role within democracy.

With the expertise of the Department Americanism chairman, 360 High School Juniors from across the state will also learn proper flag etiquette during their week at Girls State.

Neck Deformation Appeared Suddenly DEAR DR. ROACH: One day, I woke up and my neck was bent forward. Now my chin almost touches my chest. How much worse can this get? One doctor said he may have to break my neck and reset it. I can’t look people in the face anymore; I’m looking at their belt buckle. -- R.W. ANSWER: I can think of several reasons why your neck may be bent forward. One is a muscle problem. A severe muscle spasm in the neck can force the neck into an unnatural position, often very painful to move. This can go on for weeks. However, most people can force their neck into a normal position.

The second is a nerve problem. Cervical dystonia is the most important of these. Dystonia can present itself with the neck pointing to the side, forward or backward. It typically gets better and then worse, and is associated with sustained muscle contractions.

What the doctor said about “breaking your neck” doesn’t make sense to me. However, since your doctor has suggested a possible spine surgery, the third, and most likely cause, is a skeletal problem.

Kyphosis is the term for an abnormal forward deformity of the spine (as opposed to scoliosis, which is to the side). There are numerous causes, but in older men, the most likely is osteoporosis, which can cause very severe kyphosis, especially when in conjunction with vertebral fractures. I wonder if you had a vertebral compression fracture that made things suddenly worse.

Unfortunately, surgery for kyphosis has a very high complication rate and shouldn’t be considered unless you are facing serious impediments, such as difficulty breathing or intractable pain. The best treatment is an exercise program. An orthopedic surgeon or physiatrist could make precise recommendations for your physical therapist. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 75-year-old male on Coumadin who recently took a fall. I badly bruised my shin. Initially, it swelled up the size of half a grapefruit but now, two weeks later, it’s still very tender and the size of half an orange. I first iced and elevated it.

Lately I have tried heat, an elastic wrap and even my TENS unit, but nothing seems to reduce the swelling and sensitivity. Any suggestions? -- B.N. ANSWER: A bone bruise, called a periosteal hematoma, happens when small blood vessels are broken in the lining of the bone, called the periosteum. The blood collects and forms a tender lump at the site of injury. It can happen at any bone, but the shin is very common due to its being very superficial.

Warfarin (Coumadin) works by preventing the liver from making blood-clotting proteins, making for a larger blood collection, which takes longer to heal. As long as your INR is in range, though, it will eventually heal.

Coping as a family caregiver Individuals are born into the world requiring the care of their parents and other adult guardians to grow and thrive.

These adult children, in turn, may end up providing care when their parents reach senior age or face an illness or disability.

Becoming a family caregiver frequently is a tough choice to make. It requires patience and time, and can be emotionally and physically taxing. An estimated 43.5 million adults in the United States have provided unpaid care to an adult or a child in the prior 12 months, according to the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP Public Policy Institute.

It’s not uncommon for caregivers of any age to feel stressed and burned out by the demands of caregiving. The Mayo Clinic says people who experience caregiver stress can be vulnerable to changes in their own health. Some signs of caregiver stress include: · Feeling overwhelmed or constantly worried · Feeling tired most of the time · Gaining or losing a lot of weight · Becoming easily irritated or angry · Losing interest in activities you used to enjoy · Having frequent headaches, bodily pain or other physical problems Some caregivers even resort to drugs and alcohol to selfmedicate, which can lead to further issues. To avoid the

potential pitfalls of caregiver stress, individuals should always put their needs first and find ways to alleviate the added stress of caring for a loved one. These suggestions are just a start.

Don’t strive for perfection It isn’t possible to maintain a patient attitude and get everything done perfectly each and every day. People are not perfect and mistakes will be made. Do not punish yourself if you lash out or simply need a break Eat healthy As anyone who has dealt with a hungry toddler can attest, failure to eat well and frequently can result in an emotional meltdown. Be sure to always make time for nutritious meals. This will help keep up energy stores and enable you to better cope with caregiver stress.

Pay attention to mood changes Anxiety or depression can sneak up on you when you least expect it. Ask for help if you feel your tasks are becoming too overwhelming. Seek the help of a doctor if changes in mood, sleeping patterns, appetite, and the like become noticeable.

Take frequent breaks Getting a break from caregiving and setting aside time for yourself can increase patience levels and the ability to bounce back from stress. Whenever possible, have a friend or another relative step in for you so you get a break. Explore resources available for professional aides to come and take some of the responsibilities off of your shoulders.

Being a caregiver can be a rewarding, but challenging role to play. Caregivers should keep their health a priority.
