FAIRPORT David Marsh, A Life of Courage Born in 1940, David Marsh contracted rheumatic fever at age six leading to many hospital stays and a life bound to a wheelchair. WHAT CAUSES DEPRESSION? Although the cause of depression remains a mystery, certain distinguishing factors are common among those who have the condition. People with clinical depression appear to have physical changes in their brains. In addition, naturally occurring brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters likely play a role in depression. The Mayo Clinic states changes in the function and effect of these neurotransmitters and how they interact with neurocircuits involved in maintaining mood stability may play a significant role in depression and its treatment.

In addition to biological factors in the brain, hormones can impact rates of depression or even trigger it. These hormone shifts may be a leading reason why women have higher incidence rates of depression than men.

Depression is more common in people whose blood relatives also have the condition. Therefore, those with a family history of depression may be more likely to get it than those without such a connection.

Elderly Mom Always Complains She’s Sick --DEAR DR. ROACH: My 93-year-old mom is in good condition, except for a kidney disease that has been good for the past 26 years and has had very good reports from her medical practitioner and kidney specialist.

One thing that stresses me is why she complains of being sick all the time. Is it because she wants attention, or just wants people to feel sorry for her? I am her daughter, and our family is just upset because of the way she acts. She does have depression, but she has been given depression pills.

Please give me some information as to why she is doing this. As her daughter, I need TLC, and I need to know how to handle this situation. -- A.M.A. ANSWER: Based on no more information than you have just given me, I would suspect that she complains about being sick all the time because she feels sick all the time. She probably needs some TLC herself. At 93, I believe she’s earned the right to be the one on the receiving end.

Depression may be the cause of her not feeling well, as it so often is.

Unfortunately, medication for depression is completely effective for only a minority of people. Depression goes hand in hand with many other illnesses, especially those with chronic pain. I worry that there is a problem you don’t know about. Consider accompanying your mother to her next doctor’s visit, as I am certain she has done for you. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 48-year-old woman in pretty good health. I was a smoker for 30-plus years and quit about three years ago. I don’t have any signs of COPD or other lung ailments yet, but I fear they are just around the corner. My question is, is there anything I can do now to postpone or prevent the onset of these diseases, or at least decrease their severity? -- V.M. ANSWER: Not all smokers will develop COPD. Some smokers are more susceptible than others to the effects of the many toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke. Conversely, some nonsmokers can develop COPD, especially those who lack a protective enzyme, alpha-1 antitrypsin; this is more likely in those exposed to secondhand smoke or other airborne pollutants.

Quitting smoking is by far the most important action you can take to reduce your risk of developing lung disease, but there may be others. Avoid other airborne pollutants, especially other smokers, but also dusts and fumes.

Some preliminary evidence suggests that statin drugs might slow down COPD, but there are conflicting studies, and I don’t recommend them just for COPD. Regular exercise may help, and it certainly helps your heart and many other systems.

Integrating Technology into Instruction at Churchville-Chili Schools

By Amanda Puleo Churchville-Chili Central School District is in the sixth year of a technology plan to roll out 1:1 computer access to all students in grades K-12.

Recently, the District’s 21st Century Technology Planning and Advisory Committee, a group of district administrators, teachers and librarians, reviewed the progress being made to ensure that instructional programs at all grade levels meet the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards for learning in the digital age.

“After reviewing examples of student work from over 300 Churchville-Chili teachers from all subjects and grade levels,” said Instructional Technology Specialist Megan Hugg, “we are proud to say that the district has kept pace with the changing ISTE standards and is meeting or exceeding them. Our teachers are thoughtfully incorporating a wide range of technology into the curricula that engage students and empower them to take charge of their own learning.”

For example, fourth-grade students are studying local history and sharing their digital presentations via distance learning technology with fourthgraders in other parts of New York State. At the Ninth Grade Academy, students create mock Instagram posts with visuals and hashtags that demonstrate their understanding of plot, theme and literary techniques used in Hemingway’s classic, “The Old Man and the Sea.” “It’s really exciting to see how much our students can accomplish using the technology we’ve provided them with!” said Hugg.

ISTE standards have evolved since their introduction in 1998. Initially, they focused on ensuring that all students had access to digital tools and knew how to use them. Now, the goal is more ambitious: to leverage 1:1 access to internetconnected devices to transform student learning.

There are seven current ISTE standards for students: Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator and Global Collaborator. Each standard represents skills and qualities that will enable students to thrive in a connected, digital world.

Thanks to a detailed analysis of these hundreds of projects, the Committee identified two focus areas for improvement. Topping the list is Empowered Learner. “This ties in exceptionally well

The forward-looking plan also calls for emphasis on skills represented by the Digital Citizen standard. “Students need more help becoming responsible, kind, positive and alert while online,” said Hugg. “We want them to stay safe and be aware of privacy, respect the intellectual property of others, and also understand the moral and legal issues that come along with the misuse of technology. Above all, we want them to be able to create a positive reputation for themselves online and to display ethics and good character.”

“Teachers are already doing a great job of using technology to enhance the learning experience at Churchville-Chili schools,” said Hugg. “The challenge is to expand our incorporation of digital tools, actually embedding them into the learning experience. We are seeing more and more classrooms adding higher levels of collaboration with classmates, connecting to global experts, engaging in data collection and analysis, and showcasing learning in creative ways.”

As we open doors for students to become more autonomous, self-directed and responsible learners, it is critical that teachers know how to leverage technology in designing authentic and engaging learning activities.”

Your The health benefits of grandparent-grandchild relationships In the not-so-distant past, extended families were the norm, with multiple generations residing on the same street if not in the same house.

Today the family unit is largely an amalgam of different situations. The rise of two-income families has pressured parents into finding childcare situations. Quite often grandparents once again step in to offer guidance and support for youngsters. This can be a good thing for both the grandparents and the grandchildren.

Although a bevy of psychological research focuses on parent-child relationships, new evidence points to the benefits of the grandchild-grandparent relationship as well. Close relationships between these different demographics is often a sign of strong familial ties.

A study from researchers at Boston College discovered that emotionally close ties between grandparents and adult grandchildren reduced depressive symptoms in both groups. Research at the University of Oxford among English children between the ages 11 and 16 found that close grandparent-grandchild relationships were associated with benefits including fewer emotional and behavioral problems and fewer difficulties with peers.

Adult and grandchildren alike benefit from relationships with their elders. Grandparents can provide a connection and exposure to different ideas while providing a link to family history and knowledge regarding traditions and customs not readily available elsewhere.

Nurturing grandparent-grandchild experiences may be easy for families where grandparents live in the same house or close by. For others, it may take some effort. The following are some ways to facilitate time spent together.

• Schedule regular family reunions or get-togethers. Host or plan multi-generation events that bring the family together and expose children to various members of their family.

• Promote one-on-one time. Have grandchildren spend time with grandparents in intimate settings. Alone time can be good for both and offers each undivided attention. A meal at a restaurant or time

• Share skills with each other. Either generation can play teacher to the other. Grandparents may have certain skills, such as baking, sewing or wood crafts, they can impart that may not be readily taught today. Children can help grandparents navigate computers, video games or sports activities.

THE HISTORY OF CORSAGES The term “corsage” was once a reference to the bodice of a woman’s dress. The first corsages were actually worn on the bodice, which is the part of a woman’s dress that is above the waist, and some believed the corsage could ward off evil spirits. According to PollenFloralDesign.com, by the 1900s, corsages were worn closer to the shoulder than the bodice.

At this time, the flowers were pinned on upside down, with the bow at the top. The corsages were also larger at this time than they are today.

The tradition of giving corsages to young ladies on their prom nights is relatively recent. In fact, many historians agree that this practice likely began in the 20th century in the United States when gentlemen would typically arrive to pick up their prom dates bearing bouquets of flowers for their dates’ parents. The young men would then remove one flower from the bouquet and attach it to their dates’ dress.

We are just home from the Henrietta Memorial Day parade! It was great as usual! My comment is for Nichols Electric Company at the corner of E. Henrietta Rd. Valiant Dr. They are somewhat new to this location! As our family approaches that corner to take up our positions to watch the parade and get a good spot for the grands to grab the candy tossed, we notice a sign! Thanks to a helpful lady about two weeks ago, I took a friend grocery shopping to Walmart, Geneseo. She was in a wheelchair and I was pushing her with one hand while pulling her shopping cart with the other. We approached a checkout and while putting her items on the belt, a very kind lady behind us asked if she could help us to the car. We said yes - that would be greatly appreciated. While talking, my friend and this sweet lady realized they had met previously. The lady volunteers delivering Meals on Wheels and had once made a delivery to her. Smiles and thanks.

(NAPSI)—Every year, some 4 million students take the PSAT/NMSQT, a valuable part of preparing students for college success. When the results come in, they get so much more than a score—they get an invitation to productive practice and a connection to distinct benefits and opportunities to support their journey to college.

That’s because the PSAT/NMSQT test reflects what students are learning in the classroom, measures the skills and knowledge necessary for postsecondary success, and is an important step toward college. It’s also great practice for the SAT because both have the same question types and formats. Students who take the PSAT/NMSQT score higher, on average, on the SAT than those who do not.

HOW TO HOST A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS DINNER Throughout the history of commerce, many a deal has been made at the dinner table. Business dinners are a great opportunity to lay a foundation for long, potentially lucrative professional relationships.

Etiquette is important when hosting business dinners, as a breach of decorum can derail a relationship before it even begins. Professionals tasked with hosting business dinners can take the following tips to heart before sitting down to break bread with their colleagues.

Choose a restaurant that can cater to various diets. Hosting a business dinner can be similar to hosting family during the holiday season, when hosts must cater to guests with various food allergies and dietary restrictions. Asking for such information in advance of a business dinner may seem intrusive to guests, so try to find a restaurant that offers a flexible menu capable of accommodating vegetarians, vegans and guests who might be gluten-free. Avoid restaurants that specialize in styles of cuisine that might be unhealthy or so extraordinary that guests might be hesitant to order anything from the menu.

Confirm the reservation. Make the reservation well in advance of the date of the dinner, and don’t forget to confirm the reservation a week beforehand. Confirming a week beforehand gives hosts time to book another reservation should theirs have been canceled by mistake.

Arrive at the restaurant before your guests. Hosts should arrive at the restaurant before their guests so they can address any potential issues in advance of the beginning of the dinner. Arriving early gives hosts time to ensure the table set aside for their party is not in a heavily trafficked area of the restaurant, such as adjacent to the kitchen or restroom. Hosts who arrive later than their guests may also give guests the mistaken impression that they are unimportant.

Let guests order first. Once everyone has sat down at the table, hosts should allow guests to order first. Doing so saves guests who don’t want to eat that much the potential discomfort of sitting there while their hosts eat an appetizer and/or large entrée. If guests choose to abstain from alcohol, follow suit. If guests want to have a drink, hosts can limit their consumption to a single beverage.

Don’t eat too quickly or too slowly. Hosts should try to keep pace with their guests in regard to how quickly or slowly they eat. Guests might feel uncomfortable if they finish first or feel pressured to eat quickly if their hosts finish first.

Pay in advance. Business dinner guests do not expect to pay for their meals. While it’s widely accepted that hosts will pay, it can feel awkward to have the bill brought to the table. Upon arriving early, hosts can give their credit cards to the wait staff and ask that they be charged without having the bill brought to the table. If necessary, step away from the table during the meal to sign the bill and address any discrepancies.
