A big thank you to the gentleman who stopped to help two senior citizens change a tire on Pittsford/ Palmyra Road last week. We were stranded about a half hour not knowing what to do but trying anyway. You stopped and had the tire changed in a few short minutes. I wanted to thank you by baking cookies but you did not live at the address that we were at.

Cemeteries are not lawns for dogs either. Jog and walk your dog in the village and by the way pick up your dog poop.

Waking Up With Racing Heart DEAR DR. ROACH: Two separate days in the past month, I woke up in the middle of the night after being asleep for about four hours and realized that my heart was beating extremely fast.

I waited a few minutes and, just as I was wondering if I should go to the emergency room, my pulse started to slow down. I had no other symptoms other than my heart racing. I am a 25-year-old female with no other health problems. My roommate said she thought it could have been caused by stress. I’m scared it will happen again. Should I go to the hospital if it does happen again?

-- S.C. ANSWER: Waking up with your heart racing can be due to anxiety, but that isn’t a common presentation for anxiety, which usually is in response to stressful situations (or anticipating one).

Waking up with a racing heart is more likely to be due to a heartrhythm disturbance, such as a reentrant AV nodal tachycardia.

The most common reason for this is having two pathways from the top of the heart (the sinoatrial node) through the midpoint (the atrioventricular node), which then goes on to the ventricles.

A circular pathway can get set up down the abnormal fast pathway and up the slow one (or vice versa) causing a very fast heart rate.

I would not wait for it to happen again but would go see a doctor and maybe get connected to a Holter monitor or event monitor.

Both track your heart rhythm for extended periods of time. Once you have a diagnosis, you can be treated, with radio waves to destroy the abnormal fast pathway or with medication if it ends up being the condition I am concerned about.

ANSWER: Yes, I have heard that before. Fresh tomatoes, but not cooked ones, seem to cause some people to have an acne breakout, at any age. Other acidic foods, especially citrus, seem to cause that reaction, too. It’s not a true allergy.

Acne is a complex condition, and it starts with a hair follicle being blocked by excessive skin cell growth, causing a plug in the follicle. This allows skin bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes, to grow in the oily substance normally used to lubricate the skin and hair follicle. It’s called sebum. While there is some evidence that diet can worsen acne, it isn’t exactly clear how that works. On November 11, at 11am, a Veterans Day ceremony was held at the four corners in Honeoye Falls. This annual event included Traffic Support from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department and the American Legion, Honeoye Falls Post # 664. Retired Colonel Mike Sweeney (now a resident of Honeoye Falls) delivered an emotional and patriotic “Veterans” speech to all in attendance. The Honor Guard offered a 21 rifle salute followed by the playing of Military Taps. The Ceremony honored all Veterans, Past & Present and reinforces why our Veterans fought all over the world for the freedoms we currently enjoy as citizens of the United States of America.

As a Vietnam Veteran, I cannot express my gratitude enough to observe how the residents & businesses within the four corners area of Honeoye Falls embraced this event without incident or complaint.

Following the Ceremony, a luncheon was offered to Veterans and their families at the Mendon Community Center in Honeoye Falls. The Luncheon was sponsored by the Town of Mendon with donations from local merchants and businesses. I am very proud to live here and truly grateful for the support our local community provides to Veterans and the American Legion, Falls Post # 664 in Honeoye Falls.

Adopting a dog or cat later in life Companion animals bring great joy to their owners. The unconditional love cats and dogs provide appeals to people of all ages. While many people associate pets with kids who can’t wait to welcome the first cat or dog into their homes, pets can benefit aging men and women as well.

It’s not uncommon for seniors to feel lonely or depressed when they retire, their children move away or they lose a spouse or close friend or friends. The American Humane Society states that studies show pets help seniors overcome loneliness and depression by providing affection, company and entertainment. Pets also provide much-needed mental stimulation, and many pet owners find their pets help them become more physically active as well.

Seniors who adopt pets may also feel a sense of purpose when helping animals who may not have anywhere to live.

This is particularly true of older companion animals, which many young families are understandably hesitant to adopt.

Mature pets might be an ideal fit for seniors. When seniors are looking to adopt a pet, there are various reasons why older pets or particular animals might be the perfect fit for them.

• Adult pets may already be house trained, saving seniors the trouble and effort of training them.

• Seniors may find cats fit their lifestyles more than dogs, as cats are less active and do not need to be walked or played
