However, by adding intravenous dye, blockages in the arteries can be detected with accuracy approaching that of a cardiac angiogram. Thus, for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease, a heart CT scan can provide information similar to a stress test.

However, a stress test gives information not only on anatomy, such as blockages, but on physiology as well. By measuring the amount of time someone can exercise, and the response of the heart rate to that exercise, the cardiologist can gain useful prognostic information, which is impossible to glean from an anatomic test like a CT scan or even a cardiac catheterization and angiogram.

The two tests are complementary, and we often obtain both.

So, it really depends on the goals of the stress test as to which is preferred. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have breast cancer that has metastasized to my bones. I know that there have been great strides in curing cancer at the original site but there doesn’t seem to be any work done to help when it has spread. Are you aware of any? I am 87 years old. -- L.L. ANSWER: Once breast cancer -- and indeed, most cancers -- has spread beyond its original location (metastasized), it becomes much more difficult to cure. However, there have been significant improvements in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer. Cure might not be possible, but a good quality of life for months or years is possible (half of women with metastatic breast cancer will live longer than two years). The exact treatment depends on the pathology and receptor status of the cancer, and a plan needs to be individualized by an experienced oncologist.

Navigating the waters of funeral trusts Discussing end-of-life issues can be an emotional experience. Making decisions upon the death of a loved one can be challenging, especially if the wishes of the deceased are murky or unknown. Funeral trusts often help families avoid making decisions at times when their emotions may make such decisions more difficult.

What is preplanning a funeral?

Preplanning a funeral can save family and friends from having to make difficult decisions. It also enables people to choose their burial space, services and transportation. Preplanning also allows people to pay for or arrange payment for their funeral costs ahead of time. According to Consumer Protection Ontario, a person can pre-plan a funeral without prepaying. However, many people prefer to have all financial components in place as well for maximum convenience.

What is a funeral trust?

Funeral trust can be a smart investment for people who have not spelled out their wishes in a will or conveyed them in writing to someone who will be managing their estate.

Funeral trusts may be referred to as revocable or irrevocable. An irrevocable funeral trust, or IFT, is a tool people who are facing the high cost of skilled nursing care can consider. An IFT establishes an account into which money for funeral expenses is deposited.

The money cannot be withdrawn or refunded, and funds must be used for funeral expenses.

In the United States, an IFT is often considered an eligible expense during the social services spend-down process. That means the money deposited in the trust is exempt as a countable asset from any financial look-back period that helps determine eligibility for government healthcare services, such as Medicaid.

Revocable funeral trusts can be cancelled. According to the National Care Planning Council, a revocable trust can be created by anyone and, at a later date, can be dissolved by the person who originally created it.

Left to the community by Frederick Ferris and Mary Clark Thompson and purchased by the federal government shortly after Mrs. Thompson’s death in 1923, the Sonnenberg Gardens and Museum did not actually become an independent, non-profit organization-an historic park-until 1972, opening its doors to the public for the first time in 1973. The Sonnenberg Mansion, built 1885-1887, is now about 130 years old, and its extensive grounds span 50 acres, housing nine distinct, historic gardens such as its Japanese Garden and its Rock Garden. It has several paths, many nooks and “hidden” features to explore, ponds, over-reaching trees, greenhouses, exquisite architecture and several other gorgeous and extravagant features, making it truly representative of the Gilded Age is which it was built.

It was at this magnificent site that Harvestfest was held on a lovely September evening.

Harvestfest, a fall season open house, allowed visitors to inexpensively explore the grounds, gardens and amenities offered at the Sonnenberg.

Guests of all ages were welcome, and trams were running to take them from the parking area to the new Reception Tent. Within the tent, music, food, wine and vendors welcomed visitors. Events Manager & Weddings Coordinator, Deborah Kelly, explained that the Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion Historic State Park had recently constructed its new Reception Tent, and the Harvestfest gave them the opportunity to show it off. This event also afforded the Sonnenberg the opportunity not only to display and demonstrate the benefits of using the gardens and mansion as a venue for several different types of events, but it gave local vendors the opportunity to attend and display what they have to offer-catering, bed and breakfast facilities, photography-as well.

Participating vendors included Bella Rose: a Victorian Bed and Breakfast, Julie Woloson’s Café Sol, Michael DeMoria Photography, Partyman Catering & Rental, Rio Tomatlan, Sutherland

House Victorian Bed and Breakfast, Whirlin’ Disc DJs as well as the Paulsen Baker Band with Tim Chaapel and the Sonnenberg’s own food stand and wine counter.

Food vendors were offering generous samples of their dishes while others were displaying information and examples of their work. Rio Tomatlan served fresh, tasty tamales as well as introducing visitors to Quiote: “a luxurious submersion of a cultural educational experience through regional foods and art.” Julie Woloson, Owner & Chef of Café Sol, was so gracious with guests of all ages, taking the time to connect with younger guests while offering tomato bisque shooters with grilled cheese croutons, cookie bites and more. Her chopped caesar salad with asiago chips was quite exceptional. Partyman Catering & Rental offered a spread of breads and crackers along with their smooth and sweet Honey Butter and flavorful, savory Bacon Jam, including take-home samples in mini glass jars. Deborah Kelly hopes that the guest experience of vendors, samples and music underneath the new Reception Tent helps to establish the Sonnenberg as a quality, multi-purpose venue well-suited to host a wide variety of events, including walks, dinners, weddings and horticultural classes.

Tours are regularly available of the Sonnenberg Garden and Mansion. Such tours can be selfguided, although docents are present to answer questions and offer guidance as needed. Sonnenberg offers seasonal visitor admissions, annual memberships, public or private special events and a seasonal retail gift and wine center. It is open 7 days a week, rain or shine, May 1st through October 31st from 9:30am to 4:30pm as well as on special occasions, including its upcoming Haunted Strollnot too scary for younger guests-on Sunday, October 28th. Perhaps one of its nine gardens will become one of your new favorites as you explore this Finger Lakes gem.

When gathering your friends around a fire pit or sitting alfresco on a cool night, be sure to take out a few blankets for guests to wrap themselves in.

Apple-Stuffed Pork Loin Roast 2 pounds pork loin 2 Tbsp. butter, unsalted 2 white onions, chopped 2 red, firm apples, chopped 6 leaves sage, chopped 1 cup Angry Orchard Crisp Apple 2 Tbsp. Dijon mustard ¼ cup olive oil Kosher salt, as needed Black pepper, as needed Preheat oven to 325°. Lay pork loin on a cutting board and, using a sharp knife, make small cuts, lengthwise, and butterfly; you want to end up with a rectangle of pork approximately 1” thick. Season both sides with salt and pepper and set aside. In a sauté pan over medium heat, melt butter.

Add onions, apples and sage, and cook for 3 minutes until just softened; season with salt and pepper. Spread apple/onion mix evenly across pork and gently roll back into a cylinder, tying with kitchen string as needed; place in baking pan. In a small bowl, whisk together cider, mustard and oil until combined; smear all over exterior of pork loin. Place in oven and cook until center reads at 145° with a thermometer; remove and let stand for 10 minutes before carving.

Complement these fall flavors with a refreshing hard cider cocktail: Spiced Orchard 4 oz. Angry Orchard Crisp Apple 1 oz. Aged Rum 0.5 oz. Monin Pumpkin Spice Syrup 0.5 oz. Lemon Juice 1 dash Angostura Bitters Method: Heat all ingredients on the stove until warm. Pour into a toddy glass and garnish with a cinnamon stick and grated nutmeg.

Two weeks ago, a friend was driving through a village when they were stopped by a police car, the reason being an air freshener hanging from her rear view mirror. She was given a ticket and fined $193. A lot of people including us and our friend didn't know that was a law. But why a ticket and fine for a senior citizen on a fixed income? Why don't they inform and let it go? This is so ridiculous, look around; there are a lot of people driving with a lot of stuff on their mirrors. Come on, law enforcement, find some

When the waitress informed us that all 7 of our meals had been taken care of, myself and the other staff that was with me just looked at each other in shock.

The waitress again assured us that all the dinners we ordered were taken care of. Whoever you are we just wish we could have personally thanked you for your generous and kind heart. Us 2 staff plus the 5 individuals from Genesee/ Orleans ARC had a wonderful time.

I received a camera traffic violation from NYC. Their Camera Division read the plate wrong and I was issued a violation.

I went to Batavia DMV, explained that I had to prove it was read wrong and the plate that I previously owned was destroyed.

With their assistance I got the violation dismissed. I was extremely impressed by the assistance and help I received while at the Batavia DMV. I believe her name was Leslie and a lady, whose name I didn't get, who worked behind a window, processing transactions. It's upsetting to receive a violation and need to fix a mistake. THANK YOU.
