Delivering The Freedom Of Choice RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Homes are safe havens that people retreat to in an effort to relax and unwind. However, homes may be harboring some hazards that put their inhabitants at risk.

Cleaning products and chemicals can be found in every home, but some may be putting people in jeopardy. Even seemingly safe items can prove dangerous when they are used and/or stored incorrectly.

Individuals who make a concerted effort to educate themselves about common household chemicals can reduce the likelihood that such cleaners will hurt them in the long run.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: Please tell me about the supplement SAMe. I am a woman, 58, who suffers from osteoarthritis from my exercise routine, which is three days of heavy lifting with free weights and 15 miles of jogging each week. I love the workouts but not the pain it causes in my hands, knees and lower back.

I get relief from ibuprofen and the like, but these can cause problems with long-term use. I have checked with several doctors and pharmacists concerning this supplement, but they know nothing about it. Doctors in Europe have been prescribing it since the 1970s.

Can you give me your opinion of this supplement? - K.Z. ANSWER: S-adenosyl methionine, usually referred to as SAMe, is a naturally occurring substance found in the body, and it has been used as a supplement in people with depression and those with osteoarthritis. It appears to have effectiveness in both cases. Regular readers of this column know that I seldom recommend supplements, but SAMe is one of the few that has good data backing it up.

In a meta-analysis of 11 trials, SAMe was found to be about as effective at improving function and pain as ibuprofen-like drugs but with fewer adverse effects. It may take two full months to reach peak effectiveness, based on a 2004 study.

As always, I have to warn that supplements are not FDA-regulated.

SAMe is also relatively expensive (about $40 for 60 tablets at a U.S. warehouse store). Very inexpensive products are a warning that the product may not be of high quality or even contain what it is supposed to. This supplement is generally considered safe, but it is always best to speak with your doctor before taking any supplement. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have noticed that my 22-year-old granddaughter’s eyes are bulging more than in the past. She has not had a recent thyroid test. Can you help me understand the cause of this? She is addicted to table salt, using an extreme amount with every meal. What problems will this overuse of salt cause her? Are the two conditions linked in any way? - L.M. ANSWER: Exophthalmos, the bulging appearance of the eye, is a classic sign of Grave’s disease, an autoimmune stimulation of the thyroid gland, where antibodies binds to receptors in the thyroid, stimulating it to produce more hormone. The bulging is not a result of thyroid excess, but rather a cross-reaction of the antibody to fat cells behind the eye, causing the eye to bulge out. Treatment for excess thyroid hormone doesn’t reverse this, because the antibodies are still present. Your granddaughter needs to be tested for Grave’s disease.

I have seen people whose eyes just appear to bulge. They have sometimes had dozens of thyroid tests, as every doctor they see checks their levels. Other conditions that can simulate exophthalmos include obesity, Cushing’s syndrome, inflammation of the eye muscles and other inflammatory diseases.

Excess salt may increase blood pressure, and may even increase stroke risk in people with normal blood pressure, but I can’t think how it could be related to the appearance of her eyes. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Memory care a component of assisted living Aging brings about many changes, including some that may compromise seniors’ ability to remain independent. In such instances, many families consider assisted living facilities for their aging relatives.

More than 835,000 Americans currently reside in assisted living communities, according to the National Center for Assisted Living. While communities and homes provide various services, one service in particular may be needed for seniors with Alzheimer’s disease, other dementias or memory problems. Memory care units are separate facilities that cater to people with dementia or other memory issues.

According to the senior residence referral and resource guide A Place for Mom, memory care is a distinct form of long-term skilled nursing. Also called special care units, memory care facilities provide 24-hour supervised care for individuals. This care is often carried out in a separate wing or floor of a residential facility or community.

Memory care facilities aim to provide a safe and secure environment for residents. This means limiting entry or egress to other areas of the facility for those who may have trouble navigating and remembering where they started out. The Alzheimer’s Association notes that six in 10 people with dementia will wander and become disoriented. This is dangerous for the individual and others. Memory care units often have alarms and “wander guard” precautions in place to make sure residents cannot roam unsupervised and risk injury.

Another goal of memory care is to provide a stress-free, structured lifestyle that has set schedules and routines, states Brookdale Senior Living. This can help keep distress minimal and make for more comfortable and happy residents.

In addition, memory care units offer programs that help slow the progression of dementias and cultivate cognitive skills.

Fitness exercises, games, specialty food programs, activities, and

much more may be offered to make residents more comfortable. Memory care facilities include common spaces for socialization, meals and activities.

“Alzheimer’s patients must maintain their activity, walking, interacting with music, and art,” says Lory Bright-Long, MD, CMD, of the American Medical Directors Association. “We have to awaken the senses so that the memory can have a hook.

This is accomplished in the memory care setting.”

It is important for those considering assisted living and nursing home facilities to inquire about specific memory care units if a loved one requires this environment. A big thank you to Brooks Hill School in Fairport. They sponsored a wonderful grandparents day on October 19. As a retired teacher, I know how much hard work and planning goes into a day like that. They were completely organized and on schedule. As a grandparent of a kindergartner

This week, the severe storm felled a willow tree across [local road], right in front of my house.

It blocked traffic in both directions. Everyone, except you, turned around and found an alternate route. Not you. You chose to go around the roadblock by driving into my front yard, through my rose bushes, and out my driveway on the other side.

You left ruts in my lawn and trampled a perfectly good rose bush. I saw your vehicle and got most of your license plate as you went just feet from my front window. You live nearby. Was it really worth it to violate your own neighbor's [lawn] just so you did not have to go around the block in this situation?...I sincerely hope karma pays you a visit.

For the second year I have had to repair my lawn as a result of your sidewalk plow. To date this has cost me very close to $300.

This year I am having cement blocks planted around my yard.

If your plow hits them, oh well, they are on my property

I started to think maybe it was just me, but then I heard from others and it seems to be endemic these days. I know people are very busy these days and businesses are swamped which is great, however if you advertise a service, when people reach out, follow up! If you come over to give someone a quote on work don't ignore them afterwards. If you are so busy that you can't possibly get around to the work for another 6 months, that's fine, say so! We can then have a choice to wait or find someone else. This has happened with buying and selling on Craigslist,this has happened with roofers, landscapers, the list goes on.

We always try to support our local businesses. We had contacted 6 local contractors to get an estimate to build a garage. A couple of them came to our house to look at the project, and told us that would get back to us with their estimate. This was the beginning of the summer and we have yet to hear back from them!! I had followed up with one of them and he told me that he thought that I had called him and said I was going with another bid. I had not done that. He said he would work on it and get back to me. Still no estimate from him. The other 4 made appointments, but never showed up. If they were to busy or didn't want the job, then say so.

Selfish Drivers If someone can’t see the giant one-way arrows painted all over the parking lot, they shouldn’t be driving. Relax? I’m too busy avoiding being hit by people who make up the rules as they go along.

I am a great example for my kids.

When they see someone behaving so selfishly and dangerously, I hope they speak up, too. Thankfully, I was paying attention when you drove the wrong way and almost hit us.

Am I the only one incredibly frustrated/annoyed with the local demolition/refurbishing contractors, plumbers, accountants?? I repeatedly telephone and get NO response or if they even deign to come out, they don't provide a written estimate. I don't have Warren Buffet's or Bill Gates' wallets! I guess I was brought up to have manners. Seems like the only solution is to exit New York State.

Perhaps somewhere there are trade persons with manners and decency.

I was shocked to read the vent BLAMING a man and his young daughter that their belongings were stolen. You asked if they locked their car, if their possessions were in view and then admonished them to use “common sense!” I agree with forgiveness but come on, these people came out and found their stuff GONE. Have some compassion. It was NOT their fault. Perhaps you should also listen to the Pastor - sounds like these folks could have used a friend.

New York, it may surprise you, has a history steeped in supernatural folklore, stretching back hundreds of years, not including Native American myths and legends. The foundation for American myths was established early in Colonial America on account of strong Puritanical beliefs in the supernatural, including witchcraft. These supernatural myths, legends and spiritualists include Washington Irving, H. P. Lovecraft, the Fox Sisters and Rochester’s Lady in White.

Few people did as much in establishing supernatural folklore for a newly formed New York State than Washington Irving (1783-1859). He famously wrote two fantastical stories set in New York: “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” both of which have gained international notoriety. Irving’s “Rip Van Winkle,” is the less spooky of the two myths. A man named Rip Van Winkle goes walking up in the Catskill Mountains to escape his unkind wife and settles down to rest and sleep. When he awakes, on what he thinks is the next morning, he returns home to his village only to discover that everything has changed. Some of his friends have moved away; others, including his wife, have died, and his children have grown up. He has been asleep for 20 years. Interestingly, he also apparently fell asleep before the American Revolution and awoke after it to a new, fledgling country. The cause of his unexplainably long sleep was attributed to the work of fairies, and he lived in pleasant contentment for the rest of his days.

In one of Irving’s other stories, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” a gawky and somewhat cowardly school teacher, Ichabod Crane, falls in love with the beautiful and wealthy Katrina Van Tassel. In Irving’s Sleepy Hollow, the residents shared stories of a Hessian soldier who had lost his head during the Revolutionary War and was said to gallop through the town and neighboring countryside.

Brom Van Brunt, called “Brom Bones,” was a strong, stalwart youth also in pursuit of Katrina, putting him in competition with Ichabod Crane.

One evening, on his way home from the Van Tassel’s, Ichabod happened across the terrifying specter of the headless horseman which chased and terrified him. The story ends with the strong suggestion that the horseman was actually Brom Bones in disguise. Nevertheless, the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow since gained notoriety as a haunting figure and is often featured alongside popular Halloween myths.

For arguably more frightening New York folklore, one need look no further than H. P. Lovecraft’s story collection entitled, From the Pest Zone. H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) was a wellknown New England horror writer who often referenced the supernatural. His tales were

fantastic, macabre, Gothic and terrifying. This story collection from the time Lovecraft spent in New York City contains five short stories: “The Shunned House,” “In the Vault,” “The Horror at Red Hook,” “He” and “Cool Air.” Lovecraft thrived on creating a sense of fantastical horror, a supernatural terror in his works. These short stories are said to be from the New England nativeís time in New York City and have been widely accepted as his reaction to it.

New York has several other myths and legends associated with its misty valleys, rolling hills, rivers and lakes, and more continue to find their way into our collective folklore. Of historic note were the Fox sisters who, in the mid-1800s, popularized the Spiritualist movement, holding seances and listening to the “rapping” of spirits. These sisters practiced in Rochester for several years before becoming infamous when they were proven to be frauds.

Even today, the haunted history of New York continues to develop. Along the shores of Lake Ontario, in Durand-Eastman Park of Rochester, the Lady in White is said to walk. Last year, interest in the Lady in White peaked when strong winds tore off a sizable section of a large tree in Durand Eastman park, leaving a scar on the tree in the shape of a specter with a skull-like face wearing a gown and holding her hands above her head. While this occurrence continues to attract visitors and remains unexplained, such phenomena and shared stories will continue to build New York’s mystical folklore
