I recently took my dog to the [Local] Vet Clinic in [local town] for a tooth that fell out. I wanted to get an antibiotic for him.

During the visit no gloves, creams, ointments, needles, paper products, or peanut butter was used. No medical waste was generated at this apt. My bill however had a 3.50 fee for medical waste. I was told this is an automatic fee that OSHA is

To our neighbors who live across the street from us who feel the need to give my younger sister the middle finger whenever you see her outside, what kind of message are you sending to your young children who are with you when you do it? If you even bothered to take the time to get to know her, you would have found out that she is autistic and doesn’t know what she did wrong

to deserve you flipping her off whenever you see her. She is an amazing girl who is friendly and says hi to everyone and waves to people as they walk by. So the next time you see her and she waves at you, be a decent person and wave back; you will make her happy and you just might make yourself happy as well; besides, if you don’t want to be civil to your neighbors, maybe you shouldn’t have moved into the village.

Your Addicted seniors a serious problem: Opioid use among the older population The public is quickly learning that drug abuse goes beyond the illegal substances that are purchased on the street. Abuse of drugs extends to the prescription medications sitting in many medicine cabinets.

While teenagers and young adults may be the first to be stereotyped as prescription drug abusers, seniors may have unwittingly become mixed up in one of the most misused prescription classes: opioid pain relievers.

The problem of opioid abuse has been a growing issue for years. The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates 2.1 million people in the United States suffer from substance abuse of opioid pain relievers. Older patients are increasingly and repeatedly prescribed opioids to address chronic pain from arthritis, cancer and other problems that become more apparent as people age.

Data from U.S. Medicare recipients found that, in 2011, roughly 15 percent of seniors were prescribed an opioid after being discharged from the hospital. When followed up on three months later, 42 percent were still taking the medication. Fast forward to 2015, and almost one-third of all Medicare patients were prescribed opioid painkillers by their physicians, says AARP. The Canadian Institute for Health Information says adults between the ages of 45 and 64 and seniors age 65 and older had the highest rates of hospitalizations due to opioid poisoning over the past 10 years.

AARP also indicates nearly three million Americans age 50 or older have started to take painkillers for reasons beyond what their doctors prescribed. Experts from the Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing warn that dependence on opioids can set in after just a few days. Discomfort and side effects can occur when the pills are stopped. Opioids can decrease pain at first, but many people find they can be less effective over time. As a result, patients need to take greater amounts. Although many people can take opioids in small doses for short periods of time without problems, many find

themselves overcome by a troubling addiction. Some doctors prefer not to use opioids as a first line of treatment for chronic pain.

Another possible risk of opioids among seniors is that the medication can cause disorientation that may lead to falls and fractures. The senior care resource A Place for Mom also says that prescription narcotics may increase risk of respiratory arrest. What’s more, an older body may not absorb and filter medicines as effectively as younger bodies can. This means that older adults might become addicted to or have side effects from a prescription drug at a lower dose.

Seniors concerned about opioids can discuss other options with their doctors, such as nonopioid medications and alternative therapies for pain management, like massage or acupuncture. If opioids are prescribed, ask for the lowest dose and don’t exceed the time frame for taking the medicine. Only take the pills when absolutely necessary, and never mix opioids with alcohol or other substances.

DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER Finding renewed vigor: Senior living and active lifestyle communities provide invaluable care and amenities for seniors. While being around like-minded individuals can be handy, it’s also limiting.

Seniors who continue to age in place in mixed-age communities can extract joy from watching youthful children and young adults growing up, playing and socializing. Being around multiple generations also can spark interesting conversation, and all parties involved can learn something from one another.

Local, sustainable farming and artisanship: that is what KettleFest is all about. What does that look like exactly? According the USDA website, the expectations for sustainable farming are that human needs will be met while the environment and its natural resources will be protected, most efficiently used and integrated with natural, biological cycles and controls while maintaining a grower’s economic viability. Interestingly, sustainable farming has also engendered the expectation that it will enhance a community’s quality of life’s a worthwhile undertaking for any industry. For Kettle Ridge Farm, the home of KettleFest, sustainable certainly means grown here in such a way as to not strip the environment of its natural resources, it certainly means not adding chemicals to its products nor using GMOs. As what is being added to our food is increasingly being called to the public’s attention, this festival was both timely and enjoyable.

Kettle Ridge Farm is a family-owned farm on which the Hurley family produces maple syrup and wildflower honey, grows shiitake mushrooms and gathers eggs. The farm, apart from hosting KettleFest, also provided its own Kettle Ridge Farm food truck as well as entertaining culinary demonstrations with guest Chef Jeffory McLean in their log “tasting” cabin. Another food truck, Chef’s Mobile Kitchen, was also dishing up delicious items, and Z Best Foodz served up tasty “street meats,” while neighboring tents of Starla

Bake & Brew offered other treats and goodies.

Local craft beverages were also represented by the Twin Elder Brewery of Victor, the Song Hill Winery and the Honeoye Falls Distillery.

Children’s activities were provided, as well.

Young visitors were invited to participate in exploring the science of electronics in safe, ageappropriate play. There was also an art space with long tables where children could paint a plain, beehive drawer and make it as colorful and unique as they liked. A cornhole toss game was set up on the center lawn, and hula hoops were available, as well. Finally, chicken races were held inside a wireenclosed area. Children and adults alike selected small, colored strips of paper matching the colored foot of the chicken of their choice. When the race began, chickens were encouraged down the enclosed space via the cheers of the crowd and the feed being spread down the hill before them. Once a winner emerged, those who selected the winning chicken received a small prize.

Several local artisans also attended the festival, offering a fairly wide range of goods from dog treats to soy candles to photography to woodworking.

Several groups played music throughout the day on a stage in front of haybale seating. Behind these seats, a tent with tables and chairs served as a shaded space to sit, eat and enjoy the tunes. This rustic festival was full of products, demonstrations, activities and plain, downhome goodness, setting hopes high for next year.

HOW TO FIX THAT STICKING DOOR

Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames.

According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary.

• Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap.

This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily.

• Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit.

• Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge.

Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment.

• Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges.

• Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

Common Pain Reliever Can Have Side Effects --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 44-year-old man with chronic headaches and migraines. Should I worry about the long-term effects of taking an NSAID (such as diclofenac) at least once a week?

-- G.W. ANSWER: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen are among the most commonly taken classes of drugs in the world, with 17 million Americans alone taking them daily. Although these drugs are generally safe, any medication has the potential for side effects. Typically, the higher the dose and the more frequently it is taken, the increased risk of side effects. So, a once-aweek dose would be expected to have a low side effect risk.

Adverse effects from this class are among the most frequently seen in clinical medicine. Although they can affect multiple systems, let me briefly go over the side effects of NSAIDs on the GI tract, kidneys and heart.

NSAIDs might affect the stomach, and although we think of ulcers, stomach pain without ulcers is more common. Ulcers happen most often in people who take higher doses for long periods of time.

A history of ulcers, older age and use of other medications (steroids, warfarin, antiplatelet drugs like clopidogrel, or Plavix) increase the risk of ulcers and bleeding. NSAIDs also might affect the small bowel and colon, causing bleeding and diarrhea, among other symptoms. Again, these are most common in high doses for extended periods.

NSAIDs can affect the kidneys, causing both acute and chronic kidney failure, but only in a few percent of people. Periodic blood and urine examination is appropriate for people who are on long-term NSAIDs. The risk of heart disease among people who use NSAIDs regularly is increased, but in people without known heart disease, the risk is small -- about one bad event, such as heart attack, stroke or episode of heart failure, per thousand people taking the medication for a year.

I would advise you that the risk of any of these side effects is unlikely in someone taking the drug only once a week, but people who take these drugs every day should know about the potential harms. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: When I was 64, a cyst was found in my bladder. When the cyst was removed, it was found to be cancerous.

My urologist wants me to continue to have an annual cystoscopy, which I do.

I’m now 76 and in good health. Do you feel the annual cystoscopy is still necessary? -- C.K. ANSWER: Now that more people have had successful treatment of cancer, we are starting to learn about the risks they face in subsequent years.
