Helping a Smoker Quit DEAR DR. ROACH: I need your help to get my husband to stop smoking.

We have been together for 27 years. He has smoked cigarettes daily for at least 30-35 years. Recently, he had an attack where he couldn’t breathe, and we took him to the clinic, where they did a breathing test. My 15-year-old son and I watched as my husband agonized to get through the test. They gave him an albuterol machine, prescribed Advair and sent him on his way.

His father also smoked for many years, and now is on oxygen for COPD -- he is miserable every day. My husband quit smoking about two years ago using Chantix, but he started smoking again shortly after that. I do not want to watch him suffer like his father. I don’t understand how he sees what his father is going through and still continues down that road. I know it is not too late for him to stop, even though I am pretty sure he has already done some serious damage to his body.

What can I do to get my husband to quit for good? -- S.W. ANSWER: Quitting smoking is perhaps the most difficult recommendation to follow. There are some definite red flags in your husband’s case as you have described it, but some reason to hope as well.

The fact that your husband can see the effects of smoking on his father but has not successfully quit is worrisome. On the other hand, quitting now will greatly slow down damage to his lungs.

Similarly, although he restarted quickly after quitting, he was able to quit. He needs to know that most people who quit successfully have tried several times to quit in the past and went back. It’s worth trying again, and he knows that he is able to quit.

Varenicline (Chantix), bupropion (Zyban and Wellbutrin) and nicotine replacement therapies definitely are helpful for most people in quitting. I am sure his doctor will be happy to partner with you, his family, in helping him quit.

The American Lung Association, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Health Canada and the American Heart Association all have helpful information for people trying to quit as well. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: After two years of seeing several doctors and being misdiagnosed and treated with wrong medications, my 27-year-old daughter has been diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis.

Her joint pain has been constant. What kind of long-term damage has been done during this time? -- A.F. ANSWER: Psoriasis is a common inflammatory skin condition, with well-known plaques -- raised red patches with silvery scales or flaked skin -- most commonly seen over the elbows, knees or on the back. Only a minority of people with psoriasis will ever develop psoriatic arthritis, but you have to have psoriasis to get psoriatic arthritis. Sometimes, the arthritis shows up before the skin lesions, making the diagnosis difficult.

Unfortunately, damage to the joints can happen early in the course of psoriatic arthritis, but only an X-ray can show the extent of damage. Your daughter may need aggressive treatment.

Antoinette Brown Blackwell Society of Henrietta Announces 2017 ABB Woman of the Year

By Shirley Wallace Catherine McCabe came to the Rochester area from Long Island in 1964 and to Henrietta in 1967. She attended Long Island Agricultural and Technical Institute and has taken business and seminar courses at Monroe Community College and Rochester Institute of Technology.

Catherine owned a small business, DINA Enterprises, where she was an organizational and management specialist.

Catherine has contributed much to the Rochester area and Henrietta in particular. She retired from the Henrietta Town Board in 2011 after serving for eighteen years. She is currently serving as co-chair of the town’s Bicentennial Planning Committee.

Catherine was the first woman president of the Henrietta Kiwanis and remains a member of the board of directors. She has been a member of the board of directors of the Rochester Council of the Navy League of the

United States and was the only woman on the board in 1993 when she was sworn in. Her volunteer and leadership roles include participation in the Rush-Henrietta PTA, Young Women’s Christian Association, the R-H Youth Hockey Association, and the Henrietta Community Council.

AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING

Give rugs and floors a deep cleaning. Recirculated air may be full of dust and other microscopic particles that end up blow ing throughout your home. Also, it’s easy to track in dirt and other materials on your shoes that become imbedded in carpeting. At least once a year, rent or enlist the surfaces of carpet and upholstery cleaners to give floors a thorough cleaning. You may be surprised at how clean and fresh a home looks and smells once rugs and carpets are deep-cleaned. You also can make a dry carpet cleaner using baking soda, corn starch and desired fresh herbs for fragrance. Sprinkle and then vacuum up after a few hours.

Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body.

Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury.

DID YOU KNOW? Transplant shock occurs when plants adversely respond to being moved from one place to another. Plants may need to be moved for a variety of reasons, but homeowners should be especially careful when moving plants around their properties. When moving a plant, do your best to avoid disturbing the root, even resisting the urge to shake dirt off the roots. Keep the rootball wet throughout transplanting, too, as roots that dry out are more susceptible to damage than those that remain moist. Transplant shock is less likely to occur if most of the roots are moved along with the plant, so try to dig up as many of the roots as possible before picking up the plant and moving it. Water also can help prevent transplant shock by helping the plant acclimate to its new location, so remember to water the plant after it has been moved.

How common is carpal tunnel?

Increased hours spent on computer keyboards and digital devices can put people at risk for a relatively common and oftentimes painful condition that affects mobility in the wrist.

Carpal tunnel syndrome, or CTS, can cause numbness, pain and tingling in the hand or arm as a result of one of the major nerves of the hand - the median nerve - being compressed in the wrist.

The American College of Rheumatology says that CTS may be the most common nerve disorder experienced today, affecting between four and 10 million people in the United States alone. Middle-aged to older individuals are more likely to develop CTS than younger persons, and females are diagnosed three times more frequently than males.

What is the carpal tunnel?

The carpal tunnel is a passage that forms in the wrist on the palm side of the hand. It is located just beneath the skin surface. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke says the carpal tunnel is a narrow, rigid passageway of ligament and bones. Eight small wrist bones form three sides of the tunnel. The width of the

tunnel is only about an inch. Injury or inflammation to the tissues inside of the carpal tunnel can shrink the space of the tunnel, eventually pressing on the tendons and the median nerve that runs through this narrow area.

The role of the median nerve When compression occurs in this area of the wrist, a key nerve is affected. The median nerve originates in the neck and runs through the arm. The median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel at the wrist and goes into the hand, providing feeling to the palm side of the thumb and to the index, middle and part of the ring fingers (although not the little finger). It also controls some small muscles at the base of the thumb.

Symptoms of carpal tunnel Weakness of the hand as well as tingling and numbness are the two most common symptoms of CTS. The numbness particularly affects four of the fingers. It can occur when holding a phone, book, newspaper or steering wheel or engaging in just about any activity that involves the hands. CTS also may wake a person up from sleep.

There are a number of other compression issues that can occur in the hand and arms, causing similar pain and tingling in other areas. Ulnar nerve compression in the elbow can cause part of the ring finger and pinky finger to tingle and may be indicative of a different ailment. That’s why a professional diagnosis must be sought when experiencing symptoms related to CTS. When to see a doctor If pain and tingling are affecting activities and sleeping patterns, individuals should see their doctors. Various nonsurgical remedies and therapies may help. If left untreated, any condition that affects nerve function may lead to permanent nerve and muscle damage.

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day.

When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises.

On a road trip this weekend I forgot my 11 month old’s bottle. Unfortunately, there was not a Wal-Mart anywhere near us or en route and time was of the essence. We stopped at a service station and when my husband and I couldn’t find one I asked him to ask the cashier. When I came back around he said they don’t have any but the lady said she might have an extra one in her car. While she came up empty handed and a little bit of me said I wasn’t going to use it any way…the thought was there and most of all the kindness. So I want to say Thank You to that kindhearted women.

The world needs more people like you.

I’m writing to say that I for one am excited to see new and improved changes to our Downtown area. I would love to see crime come to a stop as well as see new and improved businesses developing. Our town really needs that. That being said, I also find it totally inappropriate that some businesses that are on the side streets of the village are forced into making improvements to their businesses while others on the main streets are allowed to look like dumps. Some of these businesses are on the side streets because they cannot afford to be on the main streets and yet they are the ones being forced financially to improve the most, almost making it unaffordable to stay in business and yet their customers love them because they remain honest and committed. If the city is going to make improvement, make all businesses liable to clean up, not just the small businesses.

Why did (local town) cut down over a 5 acre forest that provided shelter to wildlife and oxygen from the trees growing to put up an ugly, costly solar farm near our high school? They destroyed this beautiful space, and now the natural benefits of the sun reaching nature is forever lost just to provide a few extra bucks in energy savings. The solar farm could have been built on the parking lot next to it, and provided needed shade to the student and faculty during hot sunny days. Yet they destroyed the woods instead. Other than the politician who pushed this project, who does this benefit? The EPA/ environmentalist messed up with this idea.

Just wanted to address the one who plowed his gray truck through a flock of seagulls that were sitting in the old Wal-Mart’s parking lot in Brockport killing one of them on Sat., March 4th around 1:00 in the afternoon. What gives you the right to purposely destroy those birds? Killing wildlife aimlessly is against the law. Don’t think you weren’t seen and don’t think you’re not going to pay for what you did.
