HISTORY OF THE THANKSGIVING PARADE Thousands of people line the streets of midtow n M anhattan every year to catch a glimpse of the balloons and performers marc hing in the M ac y’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. M illions more w ill tune in to w atch it on television. The M acy’s parade is intertw ined w ith Thanksgiving, making it as much a part of the holiday as turkey and pumpkin pie. Historians believe the parade w as instituted by European immigrants w ho made up the majority of employees at the retail giant M acy’s. In the 1920s, employees w ho w ere now proud Americans w anted to celebrate w ith traditions that w ere similar to traditions in Europe. This included a parade dow n the streets. Animals w ere borrow ed from the Central Park Zoo, bands played and marchers w ore different costumes. In 1927, concern for children lining the parade route led parade officials to replace live animals w ith the signature helium balloons people now know and love. A dragon and Felix the Cat w ere some of the first balloons. The festivities c ontinued to grow during the 1930s, w hen Santa w as added to the parade’s grow ing list of participants. 1933 w as the only year that Santa led the parade rather than closed it. During World War II, the parade w as put on hiatus, as the rubber for the balloons and the helium w as donated to the w ar effort. The parade resumed in 1945 and w as televised only in New York. The 1947 film “ M iracle on 34th Street” made the parade even more popular. NBC televised the parade nationw ide the follow ing year, draw ing view ers from all over the country.

70th Anniversary Series- Volume 3 As the Penny Saver circulation and number of advertisers grew, we were looking for new, better and more efficient ways to produce a weekly shopping guide. Also, the need for even more space became evident, so in 1960 we made another move to Genesee Street in Avon, behind the Laundromat owned by Ted Coyne of New Way Equipment. Advertisers who brought their ads to us had to walk through the laundromat to get to our front desk. We utilized every bit of our new area and added a Davidson press and better typesetting equipment including “Headliners,” which as the name suggests, were used to punch out letters one at a time, mainly for larger print and “headlines.” Large plastic plates with different fonts and letter sizes were inserted into the Headliner and spun around until the desired letter appeared, then a button was pressed and the words were printed out on a white tape. Another “modern invention” was the Varityper. This was essentially a typewriter used for smaller print and text. With the Varityper, every line was typed twice – side by side, with the copy on the second side being justified right or left, or centered as needed. As “modern” as they were at the time, the Headliner and the Varityper were very slow compared with our methods of today. After the typesetting was done, the headlines were cut off the strip, run through a hot glue machine then pasted carefully on the page. The paragraphs of print from the Varityper usually could be glued down as one whole piece. We had “cut books” that provided pictures of groceries, cars, furniture and other miscellaneous items that might be advertised. Borders around the ads were usually drawn with rulers or t-squares, with black markers of varying thickness. The classified (reader) ads were typed in strips with letters at the end of each ad indicating what edition it would run in and also the “cut-off” date. These were cut up and carefully pasted on the pages alongside the display ads according to the edition they would run in. This was usually one of the many jobs Jane took care of each week. During this time, Al Wambold, Roger’s stepfather was our pressman. Our collating crew as well as our composition crew expanded to accommodate our growing circulation. It was becoming obvious that this would not be the last stop on our journey – soon more production and office space would become necessary. Production was still painstaking as the collating process was done by hand, but now the sheets were folded in advance by Alice Mairs. Her patience was tested many times on a folding machine that wasn’t designed to fold lightweight newsprint, but she persevered! It was during this time that our magazine format took shape and remains today in the handy size our readers have come to know and love. In the mid 60’s, we moved again, to the other side of Genesee Street to what used to be the “Red & White” Grocery store. This gave us 4,000 sq. ft., practically double the space from where we were. The Red & White was owned by the Root family of Avon and managed by Jane’s Dad – Jim Gulnac (yet another “family” connection!). In this

location, on our main floor, we had our front counter, business office, composition and pre-press (camera) department. There were stairs in the front and the back leading to the basement where the presses and collating machines were located. New presses were purchased. Royal Zenith (German made) replaced the Davidson press that was used behind the Laundromat. Faster, with better print quality, these presses could produce 10,000 sheets in one hour, a big advance at the time. The collating machines were very new to us and the industry and sure beat doing the assembly by hand. Still, they had their moments, especially during the cold months when static electricity reared its ugly head. To combat these dry conditions, water was poured onto the basement floor. Our delivery day was Wednesday, so Tuesdays became our “long days & nights” with the composition department staying until the paper was complete and ready to print. This eventually became known as “pizza night” for all of us. During this time, Kim began working in the composition department while Steve learned the production part of the business. Tuesday nights could stretch into the wee hours of Wednesday morning as our production (basement) crew would work until the final route was finished. Lots of employees and friends logged time on our collating machines and we have many great memories of this period in our history. Jack Browne, our neighbor and good friend from High Street joined Al as a pressman and one of our funniest memories of this time was Jack’s loud, contagious, bone-tickling laugh. His laugh could be heard throughout both floors of the building, even above the noise of the presses. He would have the whole place in stitches and we wouldn’t even know what he was laughing about! Our circulation during the 60’s was 37,000 which was comprised of 3 Edition areas: North (Caledonia, LeRoy, Bergen, Byron, Scottsville), South (Avon, Geneseo, Livonia, Lakeville, Hemlock) and Rush-Henrietta. Pasta with Anchovies, Bell Peppers and Pangritata Serves 4 2 large garlic cloves 7 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1-2/3 ounces (about 5 heaped tablespoons) coarse fresh breadcrumbs 2 broiled red bell peppers 2 broiled yellow bell peppers 3-1⁄2 ounces salted anchovies 1⁄2 to 1 large red chili 4 heaped tablespoons coarsely chopped flat-leaf parsley Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 12 to 14 ounces penne Smash the garlic with a little a salt using a knife or a mortar and pestle. Pour 3 tablespoons of olive oil into a skillet and mix in the garlic. Add the breadcrumbs, mix well and cook gently, stirring continuously as they burn very easily. When they are just golden brown, remove from heat, season with salt and place in a bowl, ready for serving. This can be prepared in advance. Bring a saucepan of well-salted water to a boil. Cut the peppers into thin strips and place in a bowl. Rinse the anchovies, dry on paper towels, and then finely chop them and the chili. Coarsely chop the parsley and add everything to the peppers with the remaining 4 tablespoons of oil. Check the seasoning. This stage can be prepared in advance, too. Add the pasta to the boiling water, mixing well to prevent any strands from sticking together, and cook until al dente. Drain, reserving a cup of water to loosen the pasta sauce. Return the pasta to the saucepan, off the heat. Add the anchovy sauce and mix well, adding a little pasta water, if necessary. Serve immediately with the pangritata sprinkled on top.

Help senior drivers maintain their independence As men and women age, various factors may affect their ability to drive. In addition to issues with memory, seniors may have failing eyesight and physical limitations, and their reaction time may slow down. In such instances, seniors’ ability to safely operate a motor vehicle may be questioned. Age alone is not a reliable measure of driving ability, but many of the issues that affect one’s ability to safely drive a vehicle tend to appear as men and women near their golden years. Losing the ability to safely operate an automobile can greatly reduce a person’s independence. That is why periodic driver evaluations may be met with some reluctance. Aging men and women who don’t want to avoid potential conflicts with concerned family members can take their own steps to ensure they maintain their ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. Schedule a driving safety evaluation When drivers’ abilities to operate a motor vehicle become suspect, a thorough evaluation should be scheduled. The evaluation should not be handled by a family physician or family member, but by an unbiased third party like a Certified Driving Rehabilitation Specialist. This is a therapist who has special certification to assist people with disabilities, including older adults, with driving. They can help individuals with adaptive equipment or techniques if driving issues stem from something that can be addressed. Figure out if the car “fits” the individual

A program called CarFit can help drivers assess if their car is suited to their abilities. A team of trained technicians and/or health professionals work with participants to ensure their vehicles are equipped for maximum safety and comfort. A properly adjusted vehicle is as important as one’s cognitive and physical abilities. Adjustments can include mirror placement, good foot positioning and sitting at the proper distance from the steering wheel. People can learn about an upcoming event at www.car-fit.org. Take a driver improvement course Driver improvement courses are provided by various organizations, including some insurance companies. AARP also has a Driver Safety Course to lower the risk of traffic violations, collisions and injuries. Completion of these courses can help drivers enhance their abilities behind the wheel and may result in lower premiums for mature drivers. Keep the mind and body fit Regular exercise and a healthy diet can be assets for mature drivers. Mental fitness techniques and brain exercises can improve reaction time, while aerobic and strength-training workouts can keep the body in shape. Driving is one of the key avenues to personal independence. Strengthening seniors’ driving abilities is a goal of many organizations.

Marge, like some people her age, can’t drive anymore. She gave up her keys. But she could use a lift... a visit to a doctor, a trip to the grocery store, a stop at the bank. If you have a couple of hours a month to help, please call us to volunteer. We’ll provide you with training and supplemental insurance. LIFESPAN 244-8400, ext. 142

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 75-year-old man who recently experienced three episodes of lightheadedness. After testing, my cardiologist determined that these were not likely to be cardiac in origin. My concern is with the result of my 24-hour Holter monitor, which showed a little more than 1,000 isolated PVCs in 24 hours. I have been told that this is either “dire” or “not an issue.” I would appreciate your comments on this and any discussion of treatment for frequent PVCs. -- J.G. ANSWER: Normally in the heart, the electrical impulse starts at the sinoatrial node, often called the pacemaker of the heart. The impulse proceeds down clearly defined pathways (think of them as wires) to the atrioventricular node, where it waits for the mechanics of the heart to catch up with the electrical system. The electrical impulse then travels down the bundle of His to the Purkinje fibers, which stimulate the ventricle. Occasionally, in everybody, an electrical impulse will come from a different part of the heart before the normal SA impulse. If it comes from the atria, it is called a premature atrial contraction; and if it’s from the much larger ventricles, a premature ventricular contraction. These are clearly distinguishable on an EKG. A PAC is early and narrow (since the impulse will go through the AV node), while a PVC is early and wide (since it does not, and must travel cell to cell). My opinion is that frequent PVCs at your level is somewhere between “not an issue” and “dire.” One study showed that people who had no known heart disease but more than 30 PVCs an hour (720 in 24 hours) have an increased risk of heart disease over people with fewer than 30 per hour. The overall increase in risk is not large in absolute terms, however. Although there is treatment that can reduce PVCs, it’s not clear that this reduces the risk of heart disease, and some treatments actually increase mortality risk. I recommend treatment for frequent PVCs only if there are very bothersome symptoms that are clearly related to the PVCs, or in the very infrequent event of someone with so many PVCs that the fast heart rate damages the heart. The booklet on abnormal heart rhythms explains the more common heart-rhythm disturbances in greater detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What is Demodex of the eyelashes? Can it affect other parts of the body? Is it deadly? -- Anon. ANSWER: Demodex folliculorum is a mite, a small (0.1 mm) arthropod that lives on human skin in hair follicles. There is debate whether they cause disease, specifically inflammation of the eyelids. Most opinions I read suggest they do not. However, there are reports of eye symptoms in some people with more than usual amounts of Demodex, which can be treated with medication. In most people, Demodex is considered part of the normal flora, like the bacteria and fungi we carry around as well. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Birthday at Mae’s - On Monday night August 7th we had a party for my daughter’s 30-something birthday. They went above and beyond with service and food and atmosphere. I would highly recommend if you want a great place to eat or need a place to meet look up Mae’s Restaurant in Geneseo. They’re located next to the movie theater and it’s well worth the visit! They have a room available for meetings or just to go and have breakfast, lunch or dinner. The owner and the cook and the waitress that we had were fantastic and went well beyond expected service! Definitely visit Mae’s and keep it in Geneseo! We need places like this.

I have a similar problem where I live where a dog is fenced in 24/7 with a tarp as a cover. I was told by the humane society to call the local code enforcement official. The pen itself could be illegal. Hopefully this helps. After reading the Brighter Side article in the July 7th

This is to the man who returned my lost basketball to me at Baker Park in Canandaigua. I inadvertently left it there. I have attention deficit and my memory isn’t so good. Two weeks later I went to the park again, and was so glad you took the time to return to the park with my basketball. Thank you! I came in a few Fridays ago to pick up a sheet pizza. As I approached the door to leave, a young gentleman was in my way and ignored me (chatting with a pretty girl). I tried to shimmy by him, but the edge of the box tapped the door jam, and down went the pizza! 3 people came to my aid (not the gentleman, he just watched). Luckily the pizza

issue, I needed to write. It was about the person who fell in a local restaurant. We went there on July 1st to eat. Upon entering I also noticed the slippery floors. Being of the aging population this is no brighter side at all. I indeed had L.L. Bean boat shoes on but this did not matter, I told my waitress about it and had the manager come to the table also. There was NO mention of someone having a bad fall just a little over two weeks before. I am glad you are mending and OK, but it could have been different. So, patrons be aware. We were told they are trying to fix this problem. As of July 1st it was not fixed. No meal is worth getting hurt and maybe not recovering. Sure hope they at least gave you a free meal. You’ve had it with the School

only slid a bit inside the box, and was fine. The workers in Pontillo’s ran around to see if all was ok, and if I needed another pizza. Great customer service! I will be back and now not only because yours is the best tasting Pontillo’s in the area.

half and I know it would’ve ruined the occasion if there was friction. But they were on top of things, they were friendly, they were there in a flash with beverages and food. Again a big THANK YOU from us, it was truly a night to remember!

Red Osier Staff - I would love to thank the gentlemen and ladies who waited on my big family party a few weeks ago. This was a very big deal and celebration to me and mother who orchestrated pulling family from Long Island to get here. The atmosphere was cheery and amazing because of the select few waiting on us and it just completed the much awaited dinner. We’ve been planning this for a year and a

Bus Drivers? Do you know what we’ve had enough of? Motorists speeding up at our yellow flashers so they can beat the Reds! By law, when approaching the yellow lights you must slow to 20 MPH or less. Do you know what direction the children are coming from? Or if there are “crossers”? More often than not when Bus Drivers are dropping off students we WILL wait to illuminate the Reds, but in the morning, once you have students in sight either at or (God forbid) running to the stop from all directions... those Reds come on whether you are slowing down or not! Your precious time is worth much less than my precious students! Plus, the driver doesn’t “lay on the horn” to scold silly old you, the kids know hearing it to go BACK to a safe spot!

To the I Gotta Vent woman who “used my turn signal” to get into the lane in front of another vehicle - You were wrong! I could have been that guy. I ALWAYS leave a car length space in front of me. This is called a SAFETY PRECAUTION. It does not invite you to come in from behind me, turn your signal on, and expect me to slow down to add yet another car length ahead of me. Do not expect me to be happy that you just caused me to miss the light. You just angered me, and whether or not you realized it, you caused the road rage. Please do the right thing next time by staying behind me until you can safely merge into my lane - BEHIND ME! Thank you.

GENERAL CONTRACTING CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING WHAT IS A SMART HOME? Refrigerators that inform their owners when it’s time to buy more eggs and thermostats that learn homeowners’ heating and cooling preferences may once have seemed like futuristic ideas straight out of a sci-fi movie. However, such products are no longer a dream but a reality. The term “smart home” refers to a residence that has appliances, HVAC, lighting, entertainment systems, security, and many more devices that communicate with one another. Such devices can be controlled remotely, according to SmartHomeUSA, an automation product retailer. Proponents of smart home technology say features can help people save money on utilities and conserve natural resources, all the while providing peace of mind to homeowners. In 2016, 80 million smart home devices were delivered worldwide. That marks a 64 percent increase from 2015, according to the research data firm IHS Markit. The smart home trend is only expected to grow in coming years. Although there’s interest in smart home technology, the industry remains fragmented. Consumers are trying to figure out which devices are simply fun and which provide practical benefits. Furthermore, the range of smart devices is expanding rapidly, making potential compatability issues a concern. Companies that plan to educate consumers further about the advantages of smart home features and are open to standardization may have the best chances of survival. Smart technology is taking over and is likely to continue changing the way people live and work.

REALIZE ENERGY SAVINGS WITH 1 SIMPLE STEP A simple project that will help keep your home comfortable is topping up your attic insulation. This easy project will reduce your household energy consumption and will save you money on monthly energy bills. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit or furnace to work harder than necessary. Most attics are insulated, but many, especially those in older homes, are not insulated adequately enough. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay Roxul ComfortBatt on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first or existing layer of insulation. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists: cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney. Insulation begins working the moment it is installed and lasts throughout the life of the building, which means one easy DIY project can provide years of savings.

Once the invitation is extended, make a reservation. Even if the client cannot make it, it’s possible to cancel the reservation. When choosing a restaurant, look for one with an established reputation, and preferably one you have patronized in the past. Avoid restaurants with loud music or ones that are considered trendy, as such locales are often louder and less conducive to conversation. Another thing to discuss when making the reservation are the seating arrangements. If the restaurant is known for its views, reserve a table with a great view and make sure the clients get the best seats at the table. Clients should not be looking at the wall or sitting in a busy location, such as outside the kitchen or near the bar or restroom.
