DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 86-year-old male who unfortunately lost my sense of smell and, to a large degree, my sense of taste as a result of taking fluticasone propionate nasal spray (50 mcg, one spray in each nostril once a day). This drug was prescribed by my doctor. After finding out that I could not smell fresh coffee even when I put my face over the open container and sniffed, I knew I had a problem.

I mentioned this to another doctor (the prescribing doctor had transferred), and he casually mentioned that that happens and that it could take a year to come back. Well, the year has come and gone, and I haven’t regained my sense of smell. The literature that accompanies this drug does mention that a possible side effect is the loss of the senses of smell and taste. But this comes only after reading through more than five columns of small print.

It may not seem like a big deal to be unable to smell the coffee, but I am also unable to smell natural gas, and living in a house with a furnace, hot water heater, clothes dryer and cooktop stove all powered by natural gas, it becomes a serious problem. I am hoping that you can give me some advice as to how I can restore my senses of smell and taste. -- T.K. ANSWER: I certainly found the warning that fluticasone, like other nasal steroids, can cause alterations in taste and smell.

However, I couldn’t find in the published literature a case of someone losing his or her sense of smell entirely from nasal steroids. Some blood pressure medicines have been known to do it, as can nutritional deficiencies, tumors and Sjogren’s syndrome.

Exposure to some chemicals can cause temporary loss of smell.

Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases sometimes cause loss of sense of smell.

Anytime the sense of smell is lost, most people notice a dramatic loss of taste as well: This may be because the aromas of food are the most important contributor to flavor.

Unfortunately, after a year it is likely the loss will be permanent, and I don’t know of any way to bring it back. When researching your question, I found many references to studies that looked at fluticasone as a treatment for loss of sense of smell, which gives further evidence to the unfortunate and unusual apparent cause in your case. It worries me that your new doctor was so casual about this loss: It IS a big issue, and it sounds like he may not have evaluated you for other possible causes. *** DR. ROACH WRITES: I got some good advice about my column on improving patient-physician communication. One tip I received, and one which I often recommend for my patients, is to make a list of the important questions you want to ask your doctor. Another is to bring someone with you. Finally, doctors can help by providing not only verbal advice, but written advice as well. This isn’t always necessary or even possible, but often it can really improve the patient’s understanding. ***

On June 15th, a large tree limb fell on our cottage at Silver Lake. We immediately called Lathan Tree Service in LeRoy. They responded immediately with an insurance quote and within days sent two great guys who did a wonderful job of debris removal! Kudos to Andrew Carrie and their crew!!

As a business owner I wanted to thank Deputy M Thomas of the Livingston County Sheriff’s office. A few weeks ago one of my employees was driving our delivery van to Geneseo when it broke down due to mice living in the airintake. I received a call from my staff and quickly headed over to offer assistance. Shortly after Deputy M. Thomas arrived and

offered help and assistance until we were able to get the vehicle towed to Hoselton. The deputy was a man of integrity, honor, dignity, and a class act!

He represented the Sheriff’s office in a manner that should be commended and honored.

The icing on the cake for me was a wave and tip of his hat as we headed off with the tow vehicle. I hope the Sheriff’s office will commend his class act approach.

During the wind storm in early March, I had a very large tree limb fall on my car while at work. It did not appear to have significant damage other than crushing the edge of the roof over the passenger door. I took my car to Aaron’s Auto Body to be repaired and they

To the person complaining about the low life garbage can thief: Good idea to put your name and address on

your can. Maybe if it had been on it the low life would have known where to return it.

I’ve had it with school bus drivers in our local town. As I understand it, yellow flashing lights on a school bus mean “caution.” Red flashing lights mean “stop.” Many bus drivers will keep their yellows flashing as they see a car approach, allowing them to go by before the bus actually stops for its pick-up. I’ve had this happen a number of times over the years and I appreciate the bus driver’s awareness. Other bus drivers will change it to red AS I approach so I have time to actually stop my vehicle. Twice this month, bus drivers have changed their lights to red AS I PASS, and then they lay on the horn as if to scold me. If you need me to STOP, put on your red lights BEFORE I get right on top of you.

3 money-saving travel tips for retirees Though a transient lifestyle is something few people aspire to during much of their lives, come retirement, the idea of staying in a place for only a short time has more appeal.

According to a 2014 study from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, 36 percent of baby boomers want to spend their retirements traveling. Many are succeeding in doing just that, as a study from the luxury travel network Virtuoso found that today’s seniors spent an average of just over $11,000 per year on travel. That was more than any other generation, highlighting just how much older adults like to get out and explore the world.

Retirees who fear they cannot afford to travel can explore the various ways for seniors to cut costs and still satisfy their wanderlust during retirement.

1. Take advantage of age-related discounts.

Some adults prefer to hide their ages, but when it comes time to travel during retirement, honesty is the best policy. Many businesses that cater to travelers offer discounts to seniors. Car rental agencies, hotels, travel agencies, and cruise lines may offer direct discounts to customers 65 and older, while membership in organizations such as AAA and AARP may make seniors eligible for additional discounts.

Discounts on lodging and airfare might net the biggest savings but even discounts on various smaller expenses can add up to big savings.

2. Don’t overlook travel agencies.

While many prospective travelers’ first instincts are now to visit various travel websites in an effort to find the most affordable trips, it’s important that travelers not overlook travel agencies when planning trips. Travel websites, though a valuable resource, only list the hotels and airlines that agree to be included on their sites. While

But while they’re most associated with summer, watermelons can typically be found in grocery stores yearround. In some areas of the world, watermelons are considered a fruit used primarily in snacks and desserts. In Russia, watermelon rind is pickled, while some Asian countries stir-fry or stew watermelons. To quench one’s curiosity about watermelons, the following are six facts about this beloved food, courtesy of The Watermelon Board.

1. Washing watermelons before cutting into them will help prevent the transfer of any dirt or bacteria into the fleshy center.

2. An average 15- to 20-pound watermelon offers 90 6-ounce servings.

3. Watermelons grow in warm climates and are harvested from Florida to Guatemala. Residents of the United States who want to enjoy domestically grown watermelons should look for them in June, July and August.

4. Seedless watermelons contain small, white “seeds.”

These are actually seed coats that didn’t fully form.

Crossing watermelons that are a diploid plant (having two sets of chromosomes) with a tetraploid plant (having four sets of chromosomes) will form a fruit with a triploid seed three sets of chromosomes). It’s the triploid that produces seedless watermelons.

5. Whole watermelons do not necessarily need to be refrigerated. But once cut, any remaining pieces should be refrigerated.

6. Watermelons are 92 percent water, and they’re the perfect carrying case for beverages.

Early explorers even used watermelons as canteens.

As part of Fairport’s celebration of the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New York State, the Fairport Historical Club will host the reenactment of an historic debate on Women’s Suffrage on Wednesday, July 19, from 5:30-6:30 at the Kenelley Park Gazebo in the Village of Fairport.

The debate will be a re-enactment by the women of the Fairport Historical Club of a debate held in 1914 . It is difficult in today’s world to think that any woman would be opposed to granting women the vote, but back then the anti-suffrage team argued that women’s time and energy were best spent nurturing their families and that participation in the political issues of the day would diminish that focus.

Grilled Chicken Pizza 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breast halves 1/2 cup Lawry’s Original Seasoned Salt Marinade, divided 1 prepared thin pizza crust (12-inch) 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided 2 plum tomatoes, thinly sliced 1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion Preparation 1. Place chicken in large re-sealable plastic bag or glass dish. Add marinade, turn to coat well. Refrigerate 30 minutes or longer for extra flavor. Remove chicken from marinade, reserve marinade.

2. Grill chicken over medium heat 6 to 7 minutes per side or until cooked through, brushing with 2 tablespoons of reserved marinade. Cut chicken into thin strips.

3. Place crust on grill, close lid. Grill over medium heat 1 to 2 minutes or until grill marks appear on bottom of crust. Carefully flip crust over using tongs or spatula.

4. Brush crust with remaining 2 tablespoons marinade. Layer crust with 1/2 of cheese, grilled chicken, tomatoes, onions. Cover with remaining cheese, close lid. Discard remaining marinade.

5. Grill 3 to 4 minutes or until cheese is melted and crust is browned. Check pizza often to avoid burning. Rotate pizza, if necessary. Slide pizza onto baking sheet. Slice and serve. Sprinkle with crushed red pepper or oregano, if desired.

Job entails order picking with electric pallet jacks as the primary tool, pallet stacking, and loading trucks. Must be capable of performing physical labor, lifting up to 50 lbs. Must be able to work early mornings or late nights and weekends. The schedule is a 4 day work week with overtime during the season.

Pay is $18.50/hour to start. Generous benefit package including medical, dental and vision insurance. Benefit package also includes a 401k plan and paid time off.

Part-time positions are also available, $14.50 per hour to start.
