Survived by his children Michele (Bill) Booher of Groveland, Amy Edmunds of Pittsford, and Lorri (Bill) Cook of Brampton, Ontario Canada; grandchildren, Jason Booher, Alexa Booher, and Kristy Cook; siblings, John (Pat) Edmunds of Fairport, Rhea Clark of Belfast, and Norleen (Ron) Enders of Belfast.

Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Dave was born on May 31, 1944 in Cuba, NY to parents Raymond & Breta Edmunds. He graduated from Belfast High School and then served our country in the US Army from 1965-1967. After his time in the service he worked for RG&E in Rochester, NY where he was the Director of Cash Management. Dave was a graduate of Alfred State College and the Rochester Institute of Technology. He was a member of the Harrison-Lee American Legion Post #283, the Fairport VFW, he was a past member of the Fairport Volunteer Ambulance Service, and was also the treasurer of the RG&E Armed Forces Group. He enjoyed golfing, NY Yankees Baseball, bowling, reading, boating, and traveling. He always enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Dave was an easy going person unless it was a competitive game of euchre.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on Saturday, September 22nd, from 1-4pm at the Harrison-Lee American Legion Post #283, 3850 Federal Road (corner of Rte 20A), Livonia Center, NY, where words of comfort and a prayer will be held at 1pm. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Suzanne’s Comfort Care, 167 N. Main Street, Perry, NY 14530.

John F. McClelland “Jack” Nunda: August 25, 2018 at age 82. Predeceased by parents Catherine (LaBue) and John F. McClelland Sr, his wife, Jo Anna, sister, Dorothy, brothers; Dicky, Fred and Carl. Survived by his children, Jeff (Katie) McClelland of Conesus, Tracey (Timothy) Sweeting of Nunda, and Johnna (Karl) Schrier of Mt. Morris. 5 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, 5 brothers; Bob ( Joyce) McClelland of FL, David ( Joanne) McClelland of NM, Donald (Mary) McClelland of FL, Edward McClelland of FL, and James McClelland of NC. Nieces and nephews.

Jack grew up in the Conesus/Livonia area, and became and important part of the Championship football team in the early 50’s. After completing high school, he was given a Scholarship to Florida State University in Tallahassee to play football. Then he left Florida, and choose to go into the US Armed Forces as a Army Reservist until 1963.

Jack loved his family, and not just his immediate family. Anyone who was related in anyway became very important to him and he would visit them often just to say Hi. Going to see family was his way of relaxing and there was nothing that would stand his way to stop him from visiting one of them in hospital or going to their funeral.

Jack’s passion was in being a farmer. He always wanted to have his own farm, and was able to accomplish that dream in 1972 when he bought the farm in Nunda. To make ends meet, he was a Heavy Equipment Operator for the International Union of Operating Engineers. He also became a Realtor and owned and operated his own sawmill for many years. While in Nunda, he enjoyed being a member of the Kiwanis Club for many years.

Pain in the lower extremities may be indicative of a condition called peripheral artery disease, or PAD. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says PAD occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to the limbs, head and organs, contributing to atherosclerosis, or a hardening of the arteries.

Blocked blood flow and eventual limited oxygen supply to these areas can cause pain and numbness. When severe enough, PAD may lead to tissue death.

Discomfort due to PAD usually occurs when a person is walking or exercising, because the muscles are not getting enough blood during these activities to meet their needs, says the American Heart Association.

Those with diabetes may confuse pain with neuropathy, and the elderly may think pain from PAD is a normal sign of aging and stiffness.

When undiagnosed, PAD can lead to further complications, including increased risk for heart attack, stroke, and coronary artery disease. Even amputation of a limb may be necessary. However, PAD is preventable when taking a few steps to improve diet.

According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption and lower PAD risk remained even after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status, and various cardiovascular risk factors.

Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary fiber consumption.

One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of fish and dairy; and limited meat and meat products.

Should You Switch to Alkaline Water?

--DEAR DR. ROACH: With everyone drinking a lot of water during the summer, I noticed that the water depot where I fill up my gallon jugs supplies water in different ranges of alkalinity, from 8-10. This seems to be a new venture for the depot. The owner sells the alkaline water from inside the store and claims the benefit of this water is to neutralize the acidity of the many products we eat daily. He suggests that one might start by taking water with a pH of 8 or stronger, then dilute it to one’s requirements.

The purified water involves reverse osmosis so the company reintroduces calcium, magnesium and potassium to bring it up in value. Do you have any comments on alkaline water being consumed during this hot summer season? -- B.A. ANSWER: I recently have seen much confusion about acid and alkaline consumption. By adding a base to water, you raise the pH, making it more alkaline. You can do this at home simply by adding a bit of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to your water -you don’t need to buy alkaline water. Calcium carbonate is a common antacid. Calcium, magnesium and potassium are all elements we need, so in that respect, the alkaline water you are talking about is better than the sodium you would add to water with baking soda.

However, the important point is that under normal circumstances your body does not need any help in maintaining pH or in neutralizing acid. The body’s systems are able to maintain pH under almost any dietary condition. Alkaline water is not necessary for health. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 90 years old, physically and mentally in good health. Fourteen years ago, I had a triple bypass, which was very successful. Since then I have had trouble with my blood pressure. The low always runs between 50 and 70, which is fine, but the high side is between 150 and 190, which is not good.

My doctor has me on amlodipine and hydrochlorothiazide.

Is there any way to lower the high pressure without also lowering the low side? My doctor does not want to increase the dosages because it would keep me tired all the time. -- J.B. ANSWER: High systolic blood pressures in the elderly often are due to very stiff blood vessels. Since you have coronary artery disease, I think it’s likely that you have calcium in your large arteries, which make them unyielding to the degree that the rush of blood from the heart drives the pressure up very high. It may be impossible to lower the pressure without causing symptoms, so I understand your doctor’s concerns and position.

When I think about treating blood pressure, I think more about trying to prevent bad outcomes (like stroke and heart attack) than just treating a number. There is good evidence that ACE inhibitors, like ramipril, reduce heart attack risk in people with known risk factors, so I might try a very low dose to see if it helps the blood pressure without making you feel fatigued or lightheaded. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.

Light the way for safer nighttime driving Routine vehicle maintenance protects drivers on the road while also protecting the often considerable financial investment they make in their cars and trucks. Maintenance guidelines have changed thanks to technology, but drivers must continue to care for their vehicles to ensure the safety of themselves, their passengers and fellow motorists.

From the time they first get behind the wheel, many drivers recognize the need to periodically change their oil and have their tires rotated. But few drivers may understand the importance of maintaining their vehicles’ headlights, and just how compromised they and their passengers might be when driving with old, dimming or foggy headlamps.

Burned out lights greatly diminish driver visibility and may even draw the attention of law enforcement. But headlight bulbs don’t just burn out overnight. As bulbs age, their light output gradually reduces due to use and factors such as humidity, electrical resistance and filament fatigue. Drivers concerned about the efficacy of their headlight bulbs can take steps to improve their visibility when driving at night.

• Accept your own vulnerability. The human eye is not adapted for nocturnal vision. As a result, drivers’ visual acuity may be reduced by as much as 70 percent when driving at night. Cloudy, dim headlights only exacerbate that problem, further compromising the safety of everyone on the road. Avoid aggressive driving and always obey the speed limits, even when it’s late at night and roads are empty.

• Learn to recognize headlamp clouding. According to the automotive lighting innovator Lumileds, sunlight, ozone, road pollution, and even chemicals used in car washes can contribute to headlamp clouding.

Clouded headlamps often appear hazed and yellow and reduce headlight output considerably. Routine headlamp inspection can help drivers discover clouded lamps that can greatly compromise nighttime visibility.

• Restore clouded headlamps. Clouded headlamps do not necessarily need to be replaced. The Philips Headlight Restoration Kit can help drivers restore their clouded headlamp lenses. The kit employs a protective UV coating that effectively restores yellow, hazy lenses that

In today’s economy, individuals seeking a career in advanced manufacturing require marketable skills.

The Genesee Valley Educational Partnership, in conjunction with the Livingston County Workforce Development Office, have created a precision machining program to prepare qualified people for entry level positions and a career path in precision machining.

Program participants will receive approximately 208 hours of classroom instruction and on-site experience, which will enhance their skills and employability.

This training class will be held at the Batavia CTE Center, Participants will be responsible for their own transportation. The Batavia CTE Center is located at 8250 State Street Road, Batavia NY 14020.

Program participants will receive 208 hours of classroom instruction. The dates for the class will be September 10, 2018 through November 29, 2018, Monday-Friday from 5-9 pm. Classroom instruction will consist of lecture and hands-on instruction covering the general use of the basic components of a mill and lathe. Common fixtures, cutting tools, and tool holders will be covered. Students will study blueprint reading and use precision measuring devices.

The cost of the program is $3,500. Financial aid assistance is available for qualified candidates. This is a college-credit bearing course in partnership with Monroe Community College. Students will have the opportunity to earn 12 MCC college credits at an additional cost.

CHILDHOOD OBESITY The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that childhood obesity rates have more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the last 30 years. This is happening in spite of indications that childhood obesity could reduce life expectancy by five years or more.

Many children are not participating in free-time physical activity and, according to Blank Children’s Hospital, only 25 percent of children in the United States eat a healthy diet.

Considering children spend six or more hours at school and many eat school lunches or receive in school-provided breakfasts, schools can play a pivotal role in helping to control the rising epidemic of childhood obesity.

It’s a street festival that is somehow more than a street festival. Local business owners and visitors mingle, filling the bustling streets. Tents line Commercial Street in Livonia, New York, purveying treats like cotton candy and candy apples and selling arts and crafts such as jewelry and décor. Businesses, such as local ice cream favorite Twisters, are welcoming the public in to sample their offerings. In fact, the entire event seems to be focused on food and fun.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Carefully break off mushroom stems and chop until extremely fine. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add mushroom stems and garlic and fry until no moisture remains, taking care not to burn garlic. Set aside to cool.

Combine cream cheese, Parmesan cheese, black pepper, onion powder and cayenne pepper. Stuff each mushroom cap with cheese mixture and arrange on a greased cookie sheet. Bake for 20 minutes, or until mushrooms are piping hot and liquid starts to form under caps.

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • • • • • • • • • • 1.

8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf 2 cups half-and-half 4 egg yolks 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the

toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter.

3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly.

When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed.

4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.

5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream.

Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half.

Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

The program is headed by Marshall D. Welch III, the Sloter Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at Lycoming College, who is an accomplished entrepreneur with extensive experience advising and managing organizations, merger integration and emerging growth companies. He also approaches entrepreneurship differently from others. Welch believes that entrepreneurship, at its core, is finding and creating value, and that studying entrepreneurship as an academic discipline helps students learn to be innovative in whatever field they ultimately pursue.

In less than one year, Lycoming College’s entrepreneurship classes have become a sought-after, valued addition to many students’ class schedules.

The program is built on the notion that any student’s core education, regardless of academic major, can be augmented with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to take a business idea to fruition, such as innovation, digital marketing, intellectual property and financial skills.

“My No. 1 objective is to create a world-class experience for students by joining the liberal arts with entrepreneurship,” said Welch. “I believe that the core knowledge of any entrepreneur is first his or her primary field of study, whether that is biology, archaeology, music or any of the other majors at Lycoming. Then add the practical knowledge and skills necessary to help our students become successful entrepreneurs or even work for entrepreneurial companies.”

Firmly grounded in the liberal arts, the College has modernized its approach to higher education by offering courses that better prepare students for the 21st century.

Still in its infancy, the program is already attracting well-known speakers to campus. Jay Ducote, celebrity chef and restaurateur, who has appeared on Food Network and Travel Channel, recently lectured to the College community on how he followed his passion and took risks on his road to success.
