Add health screenings to back-to-school checklist An essential requirement parents must find time for is completing their children’s health screenings and immunizations so youngsters can return to school.

Health screenings may include, but may not be limited to, routine physical exams, eye exams and dental cleanings. Each school district may have its own set of health requirements that must be met in order for children to attend school.

Many schools require that children are up-to-date with all immunizations before they can begin a new school year. While the issue of vaccinations has inspired debate in recent years, parents should recognize that many schools will only exempt students from receiving certain vaccinations due to religious reasons.

Students who have specific learning disabilities or medical conditions that require classroom modification should obtain recent documentation from any therapists or specialists prior to beginning a new school year. Doing so facilitates the process of setting up procedures within the school while ensuring children have what they need to excel in the classroom. All parents may want to ask doctors to provide copies of medical and immunization records so that schools will have the most recent copies on file.

Parents should schedule eye examinations well in advance of the first day of school so they have ample time to fill new prescriptions for youngsters before school begins. This ensures kids won’t be starting off on the wrong foot because of vision problems that could already have been addressed.

Can Magnesium Pills Help Control A-Fib? DEAR DR. ROACH: Ten years ago, I had many episodes of rapid heartbeats, diagnosed as atrial fibrillation. My cardiologist put me on a medication, which I took for a couple of years, but the A-fib came back. The doctor changed my medication to sotalol, but that didn’t help either. I read that low magnesium could be a cause of atrial fibrillation, and I started taking calcium, magnesium and potassium, and have not an episode of rapid heartbeat for four years.

I went back to my doctor, who told me it was a crazy idea. I haven’t seen him in four years. It seems a shame that we hear of so many treatments for A-fib when it might be stopped with a simple supplement. -- S.Z. ANSWER: Well, it certainly isn’t a crazy idea, but low magnesium isn’t the only cause of atrial fibrillation, and supplementing magnesium and other electrolytes will not stop atrial fibrillation in most people. However, low blood magnesium levels are a recognized risk factor for developing atrial fibrillation, and giving magnesium during heart surgery reduces the risk of developing A-fib afterward in some (but not all) studies, so there certainly is something to it.

Also, oral magnesium can make other medications for A-fib work more effectively. Since oral magnesium is safe and cheap, I think it is reasonable to try.

However, I am concerned because atrial fibrillation can go on in some people without their being aware of it, and the major risk of A-fib is blood clots. I would recommend that you continue to get evaluated periodically to make sure your heart rate is persistently normal. I also would try to find a physician who is willing to work with you on combining “alternative” treatments like magnesium with traditional therapy if needed.

Other suggestions included looking for low oxygen levels, and checking whether the blood pressure drops too much upon standing.

One person wrote in to note that walkers and wheelchairs can decrease activity and lead to loss of strength and balance. Another recommended looking for hidden infections, such as in the urine.

These should have been checked for.

While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. KIDS AND SLEEP School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. Ridesharing keeps seniors on the move Losing the ability to drive and get around is one of the most challenging aspects of growing older for seniors. This loss of independence can result in loneliness, depression and isolation.

Often seniors have to rely on family to take them places, leaving them at the mercy of a friend or relative’s schedule.

Ridesharing services such as Uber, Lyft, Sidecar, and many others can fill the transportation void for older adults and help them regain their lost independence. Many traditional paratransit services (door-to-door transit, often limited to those over 65 and disabled) may be less convenient than ridesharing services, and it may be challenging to find a company that services rural areas.

Plus, reservations may need to be made a day in advance, with limited drop-off locations available. That makes it hard for seniors to make spontaneous plans, again taking away some of their independence. But flexible ridesharing services may provide the flexibility seniors are hoping for.

Connecting with ridesharing services requires only a cursory education in mobile technology. According to a recent report from the Consumer Electronics Association, 46 percent of senior households have smartphones and 40 percent have tablets. Many seniors are becoming more tech-savvy, meaning they have the wherewithal to navigate apps and websites that can connect them with a ride. And if they aren’t, a quick primer from a young friend or relative can stoke their confidence.

Before engaging a ridesharing service, seniors should familiarize themselves with how such services work and take steps to ensure their safety. · Many ridesharing services are linked directly to a credit card

account. Passengers should not have to pay in cash. If the driver requests it, this should raise a red flag. Report the driver to the service. · Confirm that the driver matches the profile and the vehicle that was indicated on the ride app. Never get in the car unless there is verification. · Ask for an estimate regarding the cost of the trip and if those costs can increase considerably during the ride. Budgetconscious seniors should avoid services whose rates can fluctuate dramatically after riders get in the vehicle. · Look into Uber ASSIST as another option. Seniors who require a little help to get in and out of the car or those who need wheelchairs or other devices can choose the Uber ASSIST option on their apps. 40 Years of Service to St. Agnes School After more than forty years of faithful service, St. Agnes School teacher Sandra DiPasquale is announcing her retirement. Miss DiPasquale – or “Miss D,” as the children call her – started teaching fourth grade at St. Agnes School in September of 1976. From the beginning, she invested her creative energies in the school, directing musical productions for the 7th and 8th grade classes (Oliver, Pinocchio, Snow White, HMS Pinafore, etc), as well as all of the Christmas Pageants, save one after the school became Pre-K through 6th. A dedicated Catholic, Miss D sings at her church and it is not unusual to hear some of the other teachers make admiring comments about a piece she has sung.

While Miss D has spent most of her career teaching fourth grade, she has also taught combined grade classes, including a 3rd/4th grade class and a 4th/5th grade class. Her favorite subjects to teach are Math, Social Studies and Religion. Among the projects her class undertakes is a living biography, where her students research a person from history and dress up as that person, presenting their lives to the rest of the class from their perspective.

When asked about her favorite memories of her time at St. Agnes, Miss D’s response is affectionate. “There have been too many memories,” she says. “I can’t pick out just one.”

As of now, Miss D plans to spend her retirement relaxing and enjoying her life and

On Friday June 9th there was a silver alert sent out area wide for our mother/mother in law. Thankfully she was located at Toomey’s corners in East Bloomfield after missing for 9 hrs. We are so grateful to everyone involved in the search especially Monroe, Livingston and Ontario county sheriffs, U of R security, the attentive woman who noticed the specialized license plates and the employees of Toomey’s corners mini mart for their kindness and quick action to notify the authorities. She is safe and sound and no longer driving. So grateful for the kindness of strangers.

The American Legion Harrison-Lee Post 283 thanks Jeremy Bellinger who donated the use of a 43 passenger bus to the post for Memorial Day. His reason to donate was to support local military Veterans. This allowed the Post to safely get all their marching members and flags to 3 ceremonies in Livonia, Lakeville, and the Conesus Lake Nursing Home. All the members of the Post 283 Legion, Sons of the American Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary were extremely appreciative of the use of the bus.

Violet J. Englert June 29, 2017 Violet J. Englert, age 88, of Geneseo formerly of Leicester, New York, passed away peacefully on Thursday June 29, 2017 at the Suzanne’s Comfort Care Home in Perry surrounded by her loving family.

Violet was born in the Town of Groveland, New York on June 5, 1929 a daughter to the late Leonard and Sarah (Potter) Young.

She volunteered at Family Planning on the Livingston County Campus, worked for the Geneseo High School in their food service program, Livingston County Co-operative Extension as a nutrition aide, a substitute teacher for Livingston County BOCES in Geneseo and retired from there as a teachers aide in the Special Learning Center.

Violet enjoyed reading, listening to music and especially enjoyed times spent with family.

She is survived by her 7 children: Fred (Cheryl) Englert of Wayland, Tim (Susan) Englert of Livonia, Chris (Alyson) Englert of Perry, Melinda Englert of Lockport, Doug (Paulette) Englert of N. Chili, Marvin (Jackie) Englert of Leicester and Andy (Michelle) Englert of Leicester, 20 grandchildren 15 great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends called from 4-7pm on Sunday, July 2nd at the Eaton-Watson Funeral Home, LLC. 98 North Main Street in Perry.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 3rd at 10:30am at the Brick Presbyterian Church corner of N. Main and Church St. in Perry.

Predeceased by his devoted wife of 63 years, Martha Neff McKeown, his daughter Erin Schmerbeck, parents Samuel McKeown and Agnes Lynn McKeown, his brother Samuel McKeown, sisters-in-law Patricia McKeown, Ruth McKeown, and Joanne McKeown, and brother-in-law William Neff.

Survived by his daughters Marilynn (Fred) Cirri of Palm Harbor, FL, and Christine (Daniel) Quinlan of Avon, NY. Grandchildren: Ryan (Kyle) Watson, Joshua Cirri, Anthony Rowe M.D., Ashley Quinlan, and Zachary Quinlan.

Great-grandchildren: Trent, Grant, and Carter Watson. Also survived by his sister Peggy (David) Linton, and brothers James McKeown and David McKeown, along with sister-in-law Sondra Neff, son-in-law William Schmerbeck and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Bill was born on December 22, 1928, in Avon, NY, to Samuel McKeown and Agnes Lynn McKeown. He was a graduate of Avon High School, and married his wife Martha in 1953. They had three daughters. Bill worked as a farmer, and was the Town of Avon Highway Superintendent. In his free time, Bill enjoyed racing ponies, having coffee at the local diners, and spending time with his family.

A Celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Saturday, July 15th, 2017 at 11am at the Avon Methodist Church, 130 Genesee Street, Avon, NY. Private burial, Avon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Avon United Methodist Church, 130 Genesee Street, Avon, NY 14414.

The Fourth of July has been a federal holiday since 1941.

Though that may seem like a long time for the country to wait to celebrate the independence it declared in 1776, the tradition of the Fourth of July, often referred to as Independence Day, dates back to the dawn of the American Revolution and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Since then, July 4th has been recognized as the dawn of American independence, and celebrations that included fireworks and parades can be traced back to the 18th century.

On July 4, 1777, the city of Philadelphia, which would become the first capital of the United States of America, held the first annual commemoration of American independence, and exactly one year later George Washington ordered that all of his soldiers be offered double rations of rum to commemorate the anniversary.

In 1781, Massachusetts was the first state to make July 4th an official state holiday, and the day was actually declared a federal holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1870. However, that declaration did not grant a paid holiday to federal employees. That benefit came in 1941, which is why that year is now recognized as the first year when the Fourth of July officially became a federal holiday.
