The Village of Geneseo Water Department will begin flushing hydrants on Sunday, July 30, 2017 at 5AM. The flushing will continue through Friday, August 4, 2017 between 5AM - 4PM. The work involves little or no interruption of service, although a slight discoloration of the water and drop in water pressure may occur in areas where flushing is underway.

Ticks transmit disease. Take steps to protect yourself and your family.

How to Avoid Ticks • Wear light-colored clothing to spot ticks easily.

• Wear enclosed shoes, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. Tuck pant legs into socks or boots and shirt into pants.

• Check clothes and skin frequently for ticks while outdoors.

• Use insect repellent.

• Stay on cleared, well-traveled trails. Walk in the center of trails. Avoid dense woods and bushy areas.

• Bathe or shower as soon as possible after going indoors (preferably within two hours) to wash off and easily find ticks.

• Do a full-body tick check at the end of the day and remove ticks promptly How to Remove a Tick • Using fine tipped tweezers, grasp the tick near mouthparts as close to skin as possible • Pull tick in an upward, steady motion away from skin • Disinfect the bite site with soap and water, rubbing alcohol, or hydrogen peroxide • Record date and location of tick bite. If Rash or flu-like symptoms appear contact your health care provider immediately.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapes can save homeowners enough energy to make the projects pay for themselves in less than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live.

Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which means they will block solar heat in the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertime but drop considerably in winter. Behaviors that may help you reduce your risk for colorectal cancer Colorectal cancer is a formidable foe. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States. Colorectal cancer is similarly lethal in Canada, where the Canadian Cancer Society reports it is the second leading cause of cancer death in men and the third leading among women.

Some risks for colorectal cancer are beyond an individual’s control. For example, the CCS notes that a personal or family history of polyps in the colon, rectum or both significantly increases a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer. Lynch syndrome, a condition caused by gene mutations, causes polyps to develop in the lining of the colon, rectum or both. Since Lynch syndrome is inherited, there is nothing men and women can do to reduce their risk of developing it.

Research into colorectal cancer is ongoing, making it difficult for doctors to say certain behaviors or approaches are certain to reduce a person’s risk of developing the disease. But there are certain things individuals can do that might help save them from falling victim to colorectal cancer. · Get screened. The CDC notes that colorectal cancer usually begins when polyps form in the colon or rectum. If they go undetected, these polyps may turn into cancer. Screening can detect polyps early so they are found before they develop into cancer. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends colorectal cancer screening using high-sensitivity fecal occult

blood testing, or FOBT; sigmoidoscopy; or colonoscopy for men and women between the ages of 50 and 75. · Embrace physical activity. According to the CCS, people who are overweight or obese have greater incidence rates of colorectal cancer than those who maintain healthy weights. The CCS also notes that men with a high body mass index, or BMI, seem to be most at risk of developing colorectal cancer. · Limit alcohol consumption. The CDC notes that some studies have shown that limiting alcohol consumption may reduce a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer is a devastating disease, but men and women who embrace healthy behaviors may be able to lower their risks.

8 ounces ground extra-lean sirloin or turkey breast 1/2 cup chopped onion 2 teaspoons chili seasoning 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce 4 (6-inch) flour tortillas 1/2 cup chunky salsa (mild, medium or hot) 1 (8-ounce) can tomatoes, finely chopped and undrained 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes 1/3 cup shredded reduced-fat Cheddar cheese 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. In a large skillet sprayed with olive oilflavored cooking spray, brown meat and onion. Add chili seasoning and tomato sauce. Bring mixture to boil. Cover and simmer for 5 minutes.

2. Spoon about 3 tablespoons of the mixture on each tortilla. Roll up tortillas and place on a cookie sheet, seam side down. Lightly spray tops with olive oil-flavored cooking spray.

3. In a medium bowl, combine salsa, undrained tomatoes and parsley flakes. Evenly spoon mixture over tortillas. Bake 10 minutes. Sprinkle 2 teaspoons Cheddar cheese over top of each. Continue baking for 3 minutes or until cheese starts to melt. Serves 4.

The George Eastman Museum is celebrating baseball this summer with America’s Favorite Pastime, a film series of twelve features spanning nearly ninety years of cinema history. As part of the series, which is presented in collaboration with the Rochester Red Wings, the Eastman Museum hosted a screening of Bull Durham (1988) with writer/director and former Rochester Red Wing Ron Shelton in person on July 6 and will be offering a screening of Field of Dreams (1989) with writer/director Phil Alden Robinson in person on August 4.

“With this series, we will not only celebrate baseball’s real-life heroes, but also confront its problematic history,” said Jurij Meden, Curator of Film Exhibitions, George Eastman Museum.

“We will revel in the nostalgia it provides, look into the modern game and its effects on Latin American youth, as well as enjoy some of its all-time classics.”

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 90 years old and take many medications. I am having many different dreams at night. Can medications cause this? -- A.C. ANSWER: Pretty much whenever I get the question, “Can medications cause this?” the answer is “yes.” In your case, it’s very clear that some medications cause unusual dreams in many people who take them. Antibiotics, antidepressants, blood pressure medications and even sleeping medications can cause remarkable dreams. Some people hate this side effect; others enjoy it.

Knowing that medications could be causing them often is a source of relief.

I would caution you not to stop your medications suddenly or without talking to your doctor. You should go over your list of medicines and try to discover which are the most likely to be the source. Sometimes, a medicine can be stopped if the dreams are very bothersome. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 62-year-old man who likes to ride his bicycle for exercise. I ride on paved trails and streets, approximately 10 miles at a time with an eye on extending the length of my rides. I own a road bike, but currently I ride a bike that provides a more upright seating position. In either case, the seat is narrow and firm. My body is in a forward-leaning position while riding.

Should I be concerned with my prostate gland or any other body parts in that general area? I wear padded bicycle shorts when riding. I have annual physicals, and I am not aware of any problems. I do have an older brother who is going through radiation treatment for prostate cancer, and he used to ride to and from his work. His rides were not extreme.

I have read cautionary reports from the bike community about such things, but they seem to focus on the more exposed body parts. Lance Armstrong comes to mind in this regard. -- Anon.

ANSWER: There is research looking at three areas of men’s health with regard to cycling: prostate, sexual dysfunction and testicular cancer. The results suggest no or very small increased risk in prostate cancer or sexual dysfunction. However, some bike saddles and riding positions do put pressure on the nerves and arteries that supply the penis. Finding a comfortable saddle that doesn’t cause numbness, avoiding very long rides and standing up periodically on the pedals can prevent problems. Biking shorts help most people.

Although some early studies did link cycling with testicular cancer, most authorities now believe there is no such link. In fact, regular exercise reduces risk of both testicular and prostate cancer. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 73 years old, with osteoporosis and scoliosis. Can scoliosis be corrected? -- W.E.W. ANSWER: Osteoporosis is loss of strength of the bones, and scoliosis is a curvature of the spine. They may or may not be related. Exercise Tips for Beginners The right combination of diet and exercise is one of the keys to a long and healthy life. While many people find adapting to a healthier diet challenging, that challenge often pales in comparison to the intimidation felt when working out for the first time in years.

Exercising after an extended period of inactivity may intimidate people who choose to workout at gyms, where fellow gym members may appear to be in tip-top shape.

Overcoming that intimidation factor can be as simple as working out with a friend or working with a personal trainer, each of whom can offer the support and guidance beginners need when reacclimating themselves to more active lifestyles. The following strategies can make their return to exercise go as smoothly as possible.

• Gradually build up your exercise tolerance. When you exercise, your body releases neurotransmitters known as endorphins, which trigger positive feelings in the body. Those positive feelings can be addictive, but it’s important that beginners do not go too hard too quickly when beginning a new exercise regimen.

Gradually build up your exercise tolerance, exercising two or three days per week and taking a day off between workouts when you start.

As your body becomes more acclimated to exercise, you can start to workout more and with more intensity.

• Stretch after working out.

Stretching can improve flexibility, and that may decrease your risk of future injury. In addition, improved flexibility may improve your exercise performance by improving your range of motion and helping your muscles work more effectively. Muscles contract during a workout, and stretching after workouts can help reset those muscles to their natural position.

• Find a routine that works for you.

Many men and women feel they must sign up for a gym membership upon resolving to adopt a more active lifestyle. While gyms afford you the opportunity to strength train and get in your cardiovascular exercise, they’re not for everyone.

The best approach and the one that’s likely to be most successful over the long haul is to find an exercise routine that engages you and that you find enjoyable. If the gym is not for you, try to find a routine that still includes both strength training and cardiovascular exercise. Strength training can make your body more durable, and cardiovascular exercise can reduce your risk for various health problems, including heart disease.

Beware of Lyme Disease Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by the bite of an infected deer tick. Ticks can be hard to see, as they may only be about the size of a pin-head.

Since Lyme disease first became reportable in 1986, over 95,000 cases have been confirmed in New York State. Cases peak in the summer months.

Lyme disease is very serious and can become crippling or debilitating if not properly diagnosed and treated with antibiotics. Serious risks from Lyme disease can be reduced if the tick is removed within 36 hours.

Anyone who plays or works outside is at an increased risk.

Ticks most commonly live in cool, moist environments, and can be found in tall grassy areas, garden areas, around shrubs and in wooded areas. The public can be at risk while mowing lawns, picking up leaves, or other outdoor activities. Deer, birds, mice, and other animals can transport ticks into your yard.

There are several things you can do to protect yourself and your family from tick bites. Below are some basic tips to follow: • Keep your lawn mowed and cut down brushy areas.

• Avoid areas that may be infested such as, tall, grassy, moist areas.

• Use protective measures. If you know you will be walking in tall grass wear long sleeves and tuck your pants into your socks and shirt into your pants. Also, try to wear light color clothing so that ticks are more visible. Wear light colored gloves & a hat to protect your head.

• Apply insect repellents that contain DEET or Permethrin to clothes and exposed skin according to the manufacturer’s directions. A single springtime application of an acaracide (tick pesticide) in your yard, such as bifenthin, can greatly reduce the number of ticks.

• Perform a tick check on yourself, your pets and your children when finished with outside work or play.

• If a tick is found, do not apply mineral oil, petroleum jelly, or heat.

Use fine-tipped tweezers to remove the tick. Contact your doctor if there are concerns about incomplete tick removal or if a rash or flu-like symptoms develop.

On Friday night 7/7 we came upon an accident on Rte. 33.

The fire and EMT personnel were awesome. My bright side though was for the semi driver who repeatedly flashed his high beams at me warning us of a power line that was hanging down on our side of the road that was knocked loose by the accident. Thank God for him because it was just starting to darken and I doubt I would have seen it. There may well have been another casualty.

Hopefully you live in the area and are reading this knowing you saved another accident. He also helped others by staying there until fire and rescue arrived. May God bless you. I

Recently, a neighbor’s dog came onto our property & when we filed charges, the dog warden sat in court with the offenders! The Dog Warden indiscriminately makes up the rules. She should be fired!
