Protect Conesus Lake Please attend a Public Hearing scheduled by the Conesus Town Board July 25th at 7pm at Conesus Town Hall.

It’s important to attend if you don’t want more of these superstructures on Conesus Lake and Lake Uplands. The Town’s proposal to amend the definition of a Legacy Business does NOT include any restrictions on expansion which the County Planning Board has recommended to them THREE times. Residents deserve protection against unbridled expansion.

There could be SEVERAL of these superstructures allowed in residential zoning districts on the lake, and more in other areas. Please come to tell the Town Board to VOTE NO on the proposed amendment.

Drive with care everyday Do not race your car’s engine during start-up.This is a quick way to add years of wear to your engine, especially if it’s cold outside.

Accelerate slowly when you begin your drive.The most wear to the engine and drive train occurs in the first ten to twenty minutes of operation.

Warming the engine by letting it idle in the driveway is not a smart idea.The engine doesn’t operate at its peak temperature, resulting in incomplete fuel combustion, soot deposits on cylinder walls, oil contamination, and ultimately damaged components.

Prevent summer sun and heat damage to your car Come summertime, people anticipate spending plenty of time outdoors enjoying the warm weather and taking in the scenery. In addition to lazy days spent at the beach or around the pool, summer is a great season for road trips and other weekend getaways.

While many people look forward to the sunshine and heat of summer, extreme weather can be problematic for vehicles. The warmer season can take its toll on car paint and mechanical components can bake under the glaring sun and heat. Furthermore, temperatures can quickly escalate inside the vehicle, potentially damaging upholstery and anything else inside.

Put less strain on your engine and automatic transmission by shifting to neutral at red lights.

Otherwise, the engine is still working to push the car even while it’s stopped.

Avoid driving at high speeds and accelerating quickly, especially when it’s very hot or very cold outside. Such driving behavior will result in more frequent repairs.

Extend the life of your tires with careful driving. Observe posted speed limits. Avoid fast starts, stops, and turns. Avoid potholes and objects on the road. Don’t run over curbs or hit the tire against the curb when parking. And, of course, don’t burn rubber.

When turning your steering wheel, don’t hold it in an extreme right or left position for more than a few seconds.

Doing so can damage the power-steering pump.

Consolidate your short driving trips. Most of the wear and tear — as well as the pollution your car generates — takes place in the first few minutes of driving.

Doing several errands at once, during low traffic hours if possible, will keep your engine happier longer.

Too Old for Back Surgery?

DEAR DR. ROACH: An MRI shows that I have spinal stenosis. I have not improved with chiropractic care, electrical stimulation, medication (including hydrocodone, tramadol and a pain patch), physical therapy or three spinal injections. After the third injection did not help, I told the surgeon I would need back surgery, but he said I am too old. I am 76. Am I too old? -- H.S. ANSWER: Spinal stenosis is a back condition in which the spinal cord or nerve roots are compressed due to bony abnormalities. The pressure on the nerves can cause pain, loss of reflexes and numbness. Spinal stenosis is most common in the lower back, but it can happen in the neck and mid-back as well. It is seen more often in people over 60 and is the most prevalent reason for back surgery in people over 65.

The MRI usually shows the compression on the spinal cord or nerve roots; however, the decision for treatment is made based on the symptoms, not necessarily how the back looks by MRI. You have had the recommended nonsurgical treatments, including several medications, physical therapy and injections.

Consideration of surgical treatment is reasonable.

When considering any therapy, the physician must consider the potential benefits and risks. The benefit of surgery is that it is more likely to relieve pain and improve function. There is a small risk of a serious bad outcome (death, worsening of pain or weakness). In general, the older a person is, the more risky the procedure. However, there is no absolute age cutoff of who can and can’t get the surgery. The overall health of the person is more important than age. Younger people may be a bit more likely to see better improvements in walking after surgery.

Back surgery shouldn’t be undertaken lightly at any age. Get a surgical opinion -- and probably a second opinion -- before making a decision. Only the surgeon, with access to your MRI results and having completed a careful history and exam, can make an informed recommendation about your personal situation.

Elderly especially susceptible to the heat Many people might choose a nice, hot day over a blustery, cold afternoon. However, excessively hot days can not only feel uncomfortable, but they can also prove life-threatening.

Elderly men and women, in particular, are susceptible to the effects of hot temperatures.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people ages 65 and older are more prone to heat stroke and heat-related stress than those of other ages.

Seniors’ bodies are not able to adjust to sudden changes in temperature as quickly as younger people’s. A chronic condition that affects the body’s response to heat, as well as taking certain prescription medications also may play a role in seniors’ susceptibility to the heat.

The City of Sacramento Department of Parks and Recreation says that around 370 deaths from heat-related illnesses occur across the United States each year. Nearly half of those deaths are people who are 65 and older. Prolonged heat exposure can take quite a toll on the average person.

Factor in the more delicate health of many seniors, and the hot weather can be quite dangerous.

Further compounding the problem is higher energy costs.

Seniors living on fixed incomes may not be able to afford to turn on air conditioners because of the power draw.

There are different types of heat-related injuries, though heat exhaustion and heat stroke are the most common. Here are signs that a person may be experiencing one or the other.

Heat Exhaustion: weakness, tiredness, heavy sweating, paleness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, fainting, fast, weak pulse rate, headache, fast and shallow breathing Heat Stroke: extremely high body temperature (over 105 F), red, hot and dry skin, absence of sweat throbbing headache, dizziness, nausea What to do Friends or family members should check in with an elderly relative or friend when the weather is especially warm to ensure they’re safely handling the heat.

In addition, people of all ages can take the following precautions to keep cool when the temperatures rise.

• Drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages. Water and diluted fruit juices can help rehydrate the body quickly.

• Restrict physical activity.

• Take a cool shower or bath or wipe yourself down with a damp cloth.

• Seek an air-conditioned environment. For those who won’t or can’t turn on the air conditioning, visit a shopping mall or library to keep cool. Some towns and cities also make cooling centers available in extreme heat.

• Wear lightweight clothing.

• Try to remain indoors during the hottest hours of the day.

• Wear hats or use an umbrella to shield your head from sunshine outdoors.

• Eat cool foods, but avoid extremely cold foods. Otherwise you risk the chance of developing stomach cramps.

• Do not do laundry or turn on appliances that contribute to extra indoor heat.

The heat is nothing to take lightly, especially when it comes to seniors’ health.

As a concerned citizen whose family has been greatly affected by drug addiction, and because of the many recent arrests and deaths of so many young people in our communities showing up in the news, I felt the need to write this column to make people aware of the fact that all the bullying in person and on social media, yelling, screaming, embarrassing, crying, defacing, disowning, shaming, ignoring etc. of these addicts is not going to make things better. Nor is enabling them with money and fine things.

What is needed is education, compassion, understanding, consistency, and tough love.

We, as a small community and as society, all need to realize that drug addiction does not discriminate. It affects entire families, both prestigious and not-so prestigious, and all walks of life. There are so many in our area who have been devastated by this monster. It is a disease. The initial choice to use may be just that, a choice, but once the monster takes hold, the choice is taken away. Dis-ease is exactly what an addict feels. That includes those addicted to alcohol, heroin, cocaine, marijuana or whatever their “drug of choice” happens to be. They lie to, steal from, cheat on and dupe their friends and family members into thinking all is well. But… People do not choose to be sick. The dis-ease comes from lack of selfesteem and low self-worth oftentimes fed by derogatory comments like those made on Facebook by uneducated individuals who seem to have not been touched by this evil monster or perhaps they are unaware that they are being touched by it. Those comments do not help an addict but only reinforce the negative messages that go through their own heads constantly as they struggle to live in this messed up world and struggle to get clean and sober; oftentimes feeling overwhelmed and scared, not knowing what steps to take to even get clean and sober.

Some have been sexually abused, some have been touched by the death of a parent, some have come from divorce or are just plain sad. Some just tried “it” for the fun of it and became addicted.

We, as a society and a small community, need to all pull together to help these young people and save them from themselves. There are young children born and unborn every day to these poor addicts and I am certain that their families are devastated and feel helpless as to how to help. Public scrutiny and negativity only feeds the devastation that they must feel and enables them to stay sick. Please all of you: parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, cousins, and friends find it in your heart to stop judging these addicts. Find it in your heart to reach out and help with a kind word or a caring thought. I am quite certain that there is nothing more that they want than to be understood and healthy and if responsible for another life to be able to get well and to set a good example in life. They don’t want to stay sick or die. They want to live! So please DO NOT JUDGE BECAUSE UNLESS AND UNTIL YOU WALK IN SOMEONE ELSE’S SHOES… INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY… We all deserve to feel safe and cherished and most of all loved. It is difficult to reach out for help and admit you have a problem, but if we band together in a positive way, we can enable addicts towards getting help, not enable in keeping them sick. ~ANONYMOUS

Jim had envisioned a family-oriented social club and that is what the Good ol’ Boys Car Club has become. The group not only participates in car shows, parades and festivals but also organizes member dinners, movie nights and car cruises.

They are an active group who likes to have fun!

In addition to the social activities of the club, the Good ol’ Boys Car Club is also committed to the community. Each year they partner with the Council on Alcohol & Substance Abuse (CASA) to provide some classic transportation to and from the prom for lucky high school students who are selected as the winners of an essay contest sponsored by CASA. The contest not only has a really great prize but it also works to open the channels of communication between the students and their parents as they face the challenges of making good decisions when confronted with alcohol and drugs.

Car Lovers with a Cause Jim DiSalvo had a vision of combining a love for cars with the desire to give back to his community when forming the Good ol’ Boys Car Club in 1996. He set out to find others with the same vision and soon fifteen members gathered for the inaugural meeting of the club.

Interest grew rapidly and so did participation as the club ranks surpassed the 100 member mark.

On July 6th I was picking berries with my sister in North Dansville when I took a bad fall in a woodchuck hole. I injured my left foot and could not stand on it. As my sister walked home to get the car I sat on the side hill and crept my way down to the main road.

Two very kind people stopped to see if I needed help. I sincerely want to thank the woman who got out of her car to talk to me and the young man in the bright yellow car who stopped and wanted to help in any way possible. These people are gems and they reinforced in me that you can extend kindness and help to others every day if you want.

My left foot is fractured and in a cast. I face surgery soon to correct the injury. I will remember the kindness of two strangers for a long time.

When you leave for the weekend, take them to your camp or cottage with you. I would rather hear the wind through the leaves on trees rather than the high pitched tinkling. The intermittent “chiming” wakes me up at night. The constant barrage of noise leaves me on edge.

Pay attention to what you’re doing and stop inconveniencing other people who more than likely are pressed for time and just want to get their coffee or what have you and get out of there.

Emma was born April 28th, 2003 in Dansville NY, to Carl Petrillo and Jennifer Clapp. She loved her older sister, Lizzie Petrillo. She loved her younger brother, Carl Petrillo. She was loved by all of her family and so many friends. She attended Livonia and Midlakes School Districts.

Emma was full of life and affection for all those surrounding her, she was the life of the party, adventurous, curious and always getting into everything. Emma loved listening to music, dancing and singing with the voice of an angel. All that knew her could see her love of photography in all the selfies she would take.

Emma loved nature, animals, being outside, enjoyed camping and campfires, but she also loved to shop, do her hair, and wear makeup. She was a very caring person who loved to help others. When she entered a room, the smile on her face would light up the whole room. Whatever Emma was doing, she lived her life to the fullest.

Also survived by numerous grandchildren & great grandchildren.

Al was born on April 18, 1930 in Richmond Hill, Long Island, NY to parents Charles and Viola (Allen) Caldwell. He attended Chaminade High School in Mineola, NY and later received his degree from the University of Dayton in Ohio. He served his country as a 1st LT. in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Al loved animals especially dogs. When he was young he worked with and raised Great Danes and showed them in Madison Square Garden with his father. He also helped raise and train seeing eye dogs for Guiding Eyes For the Blind and Canine Companion for Independence. He was always committed to the American Red Cross as a blood donor and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Al was a finish carpenter and built his own home where he and Pat raised their family.

Al’s Funeral Mass was held on Monday, July 17th, at 10am at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 6591 Richmond Mills Road, Rte 20A, Livonia, NY. Burial was held on Tuesday, July 18th, 10am at Bath National Cemetery, with military honors. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Livingston County CNR Memorial Fund/Memory Lane, 11 Murray Hill Drive, Mt. Morris, NY 14510.

Laurel R. Parsons July 12, 2017 Livonia: Laurel passed away at Teresa House on July 12, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer and complications of Parkinson’s. She was predeceased by parents, James and Viola Parsons; sister, Phyllis Gorwaiz; brothers, James, Myron, & Gerald Parsons; nephews, Michael Joy, Charles Spross, & Robert Parsons. Survived by sisters, Marcia and Lynette Parsons of Livonia, Evelyn Spross of Newark, NY, & Sybil Joy of Dansville, NY. Nieces, Elaine, Kathleen, Cynthia, Sherry, Cheryl & Marcia. Nephews, Edward, Adrian, Jeffrey, James, & Brian. Several great & great, great nieces & nephews.

Laurel was born to James & Viola Parsons on March 9, 1933. She grew up in the Village of Conesus where she attended a two room school house through eighth grade. She went to high school in Livonia where she graduated in 1950. Laurel was employed at Champion Products and worked there for 45 years.

Laurel was a member of Lakeville United Church of Christ. For many years she served as a Deacon and sang in the choir. She also worked on committees and helped at fundraisers and receptions at the church.

She enjoyed sewing and, especially, knitting. She made afghans, lap robes, scarves, sweaters and mittens. Many of the sweaters and afghans had designs or pictures on them. Over the years she knit several mittens for the church’s mitten tree. These mittens were given to those in need.

Laurel was blessed with the “gift of wit”. She was well known for her humor and “one-liners”. She spread laughter and joy wherever she went. She will be deeply missed by her family and many friends.

Before risking discoloration or scratching, try some ingredients that are may be lying around the house. For example, use a wet sponge dipped in baking soda as a mild abrasive to clean resin. Just be sure to thoroughly rinse off the powdery residue afterward.

Automatic dishwasher detergent mixed with a gallon of warm water also may do the trick. The detergent contains a mild bleaching agent that will not cause damage like straight bleach.

DID YOU KNOW? Transplant shock occurs when plants adversely respond to being moved from one place to another. Plants may need to be moved for a variety of reasons, but homeowners should be especially careful when moving plants around their properties. When moving a plant, do your best to avoid disturbing the root, even resisting the urge to shake dirt off the roots. Keep the rootball wet throughout transplanting, too, as roots that dry out are more susceptible to damage than those that remain moist. Transplant shock is less likely to occur if most of the roots are moved along with the plant, so try to dig up as many of the roots as possible before picking up the plant and moving it. Water also can help prevent transplant shock by helping the plant acclimate to its new location, so remember to water the plant after it has been moved.

Secret s t o k eeping an organized shed A w ell-organized shed can save homeow ners time and energy, as it’s easy to abandon or delay a project if you can’t find that pair of w ork gloves you stashed. The first step to any organizing project is to take everything out of the shed and determine just w hat needs to go back in. Items that do not belong in the shed should be moved to their rightful locations or tossed in the trash if they’re no longer needed.

M ake a pile of anything that w ill be kept, a separate one for donations and a third for garbage. Take inventory of w hat you have so you know w hether you’re missing any items or you have something and do not need to purchase another.

Now that the entire shed is empty, you can assess just how much room you have. Utilizing vertical and overhead space effectively can free up areas on the floor for larger equipment.

Shelving, racks, pegboards and any other materials that enable you to hang or store items off the floor are good investments. Visit your nearby home improvement retailer to find items that can simplify your storage. You also may be able to put scrap w ood to use to make your ow n storage shelves or a w ork bench.
