Ponds can add appeal to otherwise mundane yards and provide eye-catching, relaxing spots to sit and enjoy the scenery.

Koi ponds have recently fallen into a favor with homeowners in North America, but these popular water features date back several centuries to Asia. Centuries ago, Chinese rice farmers began keeping carp in their rice paddies, and that practice eventually caught on in Japan.

The fish started to breed and form slight color variations. Koi, often referred to as “Nishikigoi,” are actually descendants of the common carp, though the koi of today are more brightly hued and ornamental fish than carp.

Koi can become a lowmaintenance family pet. These fish tend to grow accustomed to having people around, and will often interact with visitors at the surface of the water. It’s not unusual to have koi beg for food or take food from a person’s hand. They also may tolerate some light handling.

Koi ponds also provide some psychological benefits. The sound of the water can be soothing and relaxing. Sitting by the pond may help alleviate stress, as unwinding next to a pond and watching the fish swim by can help individuals decompress.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 86-year-old male who unfortunately lost my sense of smell and, to a large degree, my sense of taste as a result of taking fluticasone propionate nasal spray (50 mcg, one spray in each nostril once a day). This drug was prescribed by my doctor. After finding out that I could not smell fresh coffee even when I put my face over the open container and sniffed, I knew I had a problem.

I mentioned this to another doctor (the prescribing doctor had transferred), and he casually mentioned that that happens and that it could take a year to come back. Well, the year has come and gone, and I haven’t regained my sense of smell. The literature that accompanies this drug does mention that a possible side effect is the loss of the senses of smell and taste. But this comes only after reading through more than five columns of small print.

It may not seem like a big deal to be unable to smell the coffee, but I am also unable to smell natural gas, and living in a house with a furnace, hot water heater, clothes dryer and cooktop stove all powered by natural gas, it becomes a serious problem. I am hoping that you can give me some advice as to how I can restore my senses of smell and taste. -- T.K. ANSWER: I certainly found the warning that fluticasone, like other nasal steroids, can cause alterations in taste and smell.

However, I couldn’t find in the published literature a case of someone losing his or her sense of smell entirely from nasal steroids. Some blood pressure medicines have been known to do it, as can nutritional deficiencies, tumors and Sjogren’s syndrome.

Exposure to some chemicals can cause temporary loss of smell.

Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases sometimes cause loss of sense of smell.

Anytime the sense of smell is lost, most people notice a dramatic loss of taste as well: This may be because the aromas of food are the most important contributor to flavor.

Unfortunately, after a year it is likely the loss will be permanent, and I don’t know of any way to bring it back. When researching your question, I found many references to studies that looked at fluticasone as a treatment for loss of sense of smell, which gives further evidence to the unfortunate and unusual apparent cause in your case. It worries me that your new doctor was so casual about this loss: It IS a big issue, and it sounds like he may not have evaluated you for other possible causes. *** DR. ROACH WRITES: I got some good advice about my column on improving patient-physician communication. One tip I received, and one which I often recommend for my patients, is to make a list of the important questions you want to ask your doctor. Another is to bring someone with you. Finally, doctors can help by providing not only verbal advice, but written advice as well. This isn’t always necessary or even possible, but often it can really improve the patient’s understanding. ***

Beware of Lyme Disease Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by the bite of an infected deer tick. Ticks can be hard to see, as they may only be about the size of a pin-head.

Since Lyme disease first became reportable in 1986, over 95,000 cases have been confirmed in New York State. Cases peak in the summer months.

Lyme disease is very serious and can become crippling or debilitating if not properly diagnosed and treated with antibiotics. Serious risks from Lyme disease can be reduced if the tick is removed within 36 hours.

Anyone who plays or works outside is at an increased risk.

Ticks most commonly live in cool, moist environments, and can be found in tall grassy areas, garden areas, around shrubs and in wooded areas. The public can be at risk while mowing lawns, picking up leaves, or other outdoor activities. Deer, birds, mice, and other animals can transport ticks into your yard.

There are several things you can do to protect yourself and your family from tick bites. Below are some basic tips to follow: • Keep your lawn mowed and cut down brushy areas.

• Avoid areas that may be infested such as, tall, grassy, moist areas.

• Use protective measures. If you know you will be walking in tall grass wear long sleeves and tuck your pants into your socks and shirt into your pants. Also, try to wear light color clothing so that ticks are more visible. Wear light colored gloves & a hat to protect your head.

• Apply insect repellents that contain DEET or Permethrin to clothes and exposed skin according to the manufacturer’s directions. A single springtime application of an acaracide (tick pesticide) in your yard, such as bifenthin, can greatly reduce the number of ticks.

• Perform a tick check on yourself, your pets and your children when finished with outside work or play.

• If a tick is found, do not apply mineral oil, petroleum jelly, or heat.

Use fine-tipped tweezers to remove the tick. Contact your doctor if there are concerns about incomplete tick removal or if a rash or flu-like symptoms develop.

On June 15th, a large tree limb fell on our cottage at Silver Lake. We immediately called Lathan Tree Service in LeRoy. They responded immediately with an insurance quote and within days sent two great guys who did a wonderful job of debris removal! Kudos to Andrew Carrie and their crew!!

As a business owner I wanted to thank Deputy M Thomas of the Livingston County Sheriff’s office. A few weeks ago one of my employees was driving our delivery van to Geneseo when it broke down due to mice living in the airintake. I received a call from my staff and quickly headed over to offer assistance. Shortly after Deputy M. Thomas arrived and

offered help and assistance until we were able to get the vehicle towed to Hoselton. The deputy was a man of integrity, honor, dignity, and a class act!

He represented the Sheriff’s office in a manner that should be commended and honored.

The icing on the cake for me was a wave and tip of his hat as we headed off with the tow vehicle. I hope the Sheriff’s office will commend his class act approach.

During the wind storm in early March, I had a very large tree limb fall on my car while at work. It did not appear to have significant damage other than crushing the edge of the roof over the passenger door. I took my car to Aaron’s Auto Body to be repaired and they

everything we brought her from Ireland. All before she died; they even cleaned out her bank accounts. The rest of her household items were sold at a garage sale at their house in the southern tier. It just goes to show you that you can’t trust anyone, even your family!!

When I saw the article in the I Gotta Vent section about the sister and niece cleaning out the man’s house so that he had nothing, it reminded me of my sister. I’ve had it with school bus drivers in our local town. As I understand it, yellow flashing lights on a school bus mean “caution.” Red flashing lights mean “stop.” Many bus drivers will keep their yellows flashing as they see a car approach, allowing them to go by before the bus actually stops for its pick-up. I’ve had this happen a number of times over the years and I appreciate the bus driver’s awareness. Other bus drivers will change it to red AS I approach so I have time to actually stop my vehicle. Twice this month, bus drivers have changed their lights to red AS I PASS, and then they lay on the horn as if to scold me. If you need me to STOP, put on your red lights BEFORE I get right on top of you.

1. Take advantage of age-related discounts.

Some adults prefer to hide their ages, but when it comes time to travel during retirement, honesty is the best policy. Many businesses that cater to travelers offer discounts to seniors. Car rental agencies, hotels, travel agencies, and cruise lines may offer direct discounts to customers 65 and older, while membership in organizations such as AAA and AARP may make seniors eligible for additional discounts.

Lima: Passed away peacefully on Wednesday afternoon, July 5, 2017, with his wife Etta, daughter Rita, and son-in-law Gary by his side.

His life was filled with building things, starting with G&D Collision, a business he began as a teenager and ran for 32 years. In retirement, he owned Crossroads Country Mall, and an antique shop in Lima. He loved to remodel houses, build barns, restore Volkswagens, go fishing, boating and golfing with his many wonderful friends. He worked hard his whole life and probably told many of you, on multiple occasions “Get to work!” Those words pushed us and inspired us and made us strong. He made us creators and builders of things, that we owe to him. We will be forever grateful. If he were here he would be saying, “Get up and get going, we’ve got things to do.” and we’re sure he is busy doing them now.

Women’s Suffrage - Yea or nay?

As part of Fairport’s celebration of the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New York State, the Fairport Historical Club will host the reenactment of an historic debate on Women’s Suffrage on Wednesday, July 19, from 5:30-6:30 at the Kenelley Park Gazebo in the Village of Fairport.

The debate will be a re-enactment by the women of the Fairport Historical Club of a debate held in 1914 . It is difficult in today’s world to think that any woman would be opposed to granting women the vote, but back then the anti-suffrage team argued that women’s time and energy were best spent nurturing their families and that participation in the political issues of the day would diminish that focus.

Warehouse Supervisor Position The Anderson-DuBose Company, located 41 Cook Drive, Rochester, NY 14623, is currently seeking an individual for a full time position as a Warehouse Supervisor.

Scope Of Position: This position is responsible for the daily duties to insure customer orders are filled accurately and in a timely manner while still following all quality and safety standards. This position will be required to work every 6th weekend and various shifts, and times.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (other Duties May Be Assigned): • Supervises and plans workforce labor: picking and loading of customers’ orders and receiving inbound product.

• Insure all safety standards are upheld by Warehouse Associates and all equipment is in good working order.

• Enforces all Quality Standards.

• Suggests improvement to operations processes.

• Communicates and enforces work rule changes • Insures all reporting is done accurately and timely.

• Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned by management.

• WMS program support Requirements Minimum Qualifications To perform this successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the minimum knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Education-Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related field preferred but not required.

Experience-3 to 5 years of supervisory experience with 1 to 2 years related experience and/or training in Engineered Labor Management or Warehouse Management.
