On May 22nd, we received news that my father suddenly passed away. We immediately rushed out of the country for his funeral and to be with our loved ones. While it was mostly neighbors and strangers who helped my mother handle the sudden loss back in India, it was the kindness and generosity of our neighbors and friends here in Fairport that made us believe even more in people’s goodness. On our return after two weeks, we found that our lawn was mowed, our mail picked up and a box of steaming fresh food placed at our doorstep.

It is just these gestures of kindness that is helping us cope, and we hope to carry them forward.

I have had dogs since 1959, including two GSD’s. I have also exhibited dogs for over 30 years in Obedience and Conformation. There is no way the walker of the smaller dogs could have or would have known your dogs bounding towards them wanted to play.

The walker of the smaller dogs was probably terrified. Look at the other side of the coin and be a more responsible pet owner.

While driving on the main road, I used my turn signal and looked in the other lane to make sure there was enough room to merge in. As I merged, you sped up, honked your horn, but I was already in the lane. You tailgated and honked your horn for several blocks then sped up to drive next to me at the stop light, rolled down your window to scream profanities at me. I tried to smile and wave to be sorry, but it made you madder, so you (a man) started spitting at me (a woman) in front of my 3 young children! Then, you cut several people off while swerving throughout lanes, then tried to follow me.

Earlier today, a patron of a local library helped themselves to 12 CDs and left the jewel cases empty on the shelf. There were two volunteers upstairs assisting if needed, but only noticed when somebody went to borrow a double CD special edition by Neil Diamond.

In fact, the Director of this library told us that somebody took an entire full roll of toilet paper and ALL the library-provided coloring books for other patrons to use to de-stress.

Even a 6 yr. old patron stated that it was stealing and they should go to jail.

Taking things that aren’t paid for directly impacts the FREE programming for patrons, music events, and other items desired, but not budgeted for, such as the Play-away Launch Pads for all library members to borrow. This library is 1 of 4 that have these in Monroe County.

I don’t usually like to vent or complain about other people but this guy or girl went too far. My wife had only been home from the hospital two weeks and took a short walk. Plants may need to be moved for a variety of reasons, but homeowners should be especially careful when moving plants around their properties. When moving a plant, do your best to avoid disturbing the root, even resisting the urge to shake dirt off the roots. Keep the rootball wet throughout transplanting, too, as roots that dry out are more susceptible to damage than those that remain moist. Transplant shock is less likely to occur if most of the roots are moved along with the plant, so try to dig up as many of the roots as possible before picking up the plant and moving it. Water also can help prevent transplant shock by helping the plant acclimate to its new location, so remember to water the plant after it has been moved.

Honeybees Find New Friends In Churchville-Chili

Second-graders at Fairbanks Road School welcomed guest speaker and beekeeper Pat Bono, a project director from NY Bee Wellness, to their classroom on the afternoon of May 16. They have been studying bees this semester, and looked forward to learning more about the important role honeybees play in pollination and food production. They also wanted to know why there is a decrease in the honeybee population, and what they can do to help.

Bono was fresh off another presentation she had done earlier that morning for several classes at Churchville-Chili High School on the same subject. Students in the Wildlife Ecology class at the high school listened intently as Bono explained the life cycle and lifestyle of the honeybee, their vital importance as pollinators for fruits, nuts and vegetables, and the role of the beekeeper in supporting their health. She demonstrated hive set up, explained how the colony is handled, and showed a glassed-in sample frame with bees, larvae, wax cells and honey.

The students at the elementary school were also awed by the close-up look at working bees in the frame that Bono shared. They have been doing a great deal of research, and came to the presentation prepared with many questions.

“Why do bees die after they sting?” “How do bees make new colonies?” “What kind of vegetables do bees pollinate?” “Why are bees having problems today?” There is clearly a lot of support for the embattled honeybee among students of all ages in Churchville-Chili.

garden, located near the school on Fairbanks Road.

“When researching honeybee conservation, our students found that it is helpful to plant native perennial plants for pollination. They decided that the Churchville garden would make the perfect spot to help attract more honeybees,” said teacher Jamie Snook. The second-graders will be busy planning and planting a bee-buffet of nectarfilled flowers in the garden this spring. (The district is looking for volunteers to help care for the garden during the summer. 3 ways aging drivers can see better at night Many drivers are less comfortable driving at night than during the daytime. Despite the fact that far more vehicles are on the road during the daytime than at night, studies have shown that approximately 65 percent of accidents occur at night.

Many of those accidents and much of the discomfort drivers feel at night can be traced to inadequate lighting. Visual acuity, which is directly related to the amount of light provided by the environment, can be diminished by as much as 70 percent at night. The human eye is not adapted for nocturnal vision, so when driving at night, drivers often experience a loss of depth perception and difficulty distinguishing between colors as contrasts fade away.

This is especially problematic for aging drivers, a segment of the driving population that is on the rise. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 36.8 million licensed drivers age 65 and older on the road in 2013, a figure the NHTSA estimates will increase to 57 million by 2030.

As drivers age, the lenses of their eyes become more opaque, reducing the amount of light their eyes can receive. For example, at age 40, the average driver may already need twice as much light than a driver at age 20. At age 65, that need can climb to a whopping eight to 10 times more light.

But aging drivers need not sacrifice their nocturnal independence just to stay safe behind the wheel. The following are three ways aging motorists can improve their nighttime visibility.

1. Upgrade headlights.

According to a recent study from the automotive club AAA, the halogen headlights found in more than 80 percent of vehicles on the road today fail to safely illuminate unlit roadways, even

Foods such as mini sandwiches and fruit trays are great options. “Dipping bars” are a fun idea for pool-themed parties. Set out a variety of salsas and dips, along with tortilla chips, pretzels, pita bread and sliced vegetables for dipping, then encourage your guests to “take a dip!”

Don’t forget dessert. Chill some of your favorite candy bars for fun-sized, after-dinner sweets. For example, stack a platter full of Milky Way Simply Caramel bars in the fridge before guests arrive. This great, no-bake treat provides the perfect balance of chocolate, caramel, and cool.

Go potluck. Ask your guests to bring their favorite appetizer or side dish.

Not only does this set a casual tone – you may find some new favorite recipes! Remember to keep paper to-go containers on hand to send your guests home with left-overs and to properly thank your co-chefs for their contribution to the meal.

2/3 c. sugar 2 T. butter 1/4 c. cornstarch 1 T., plus 1 tsp. vanilla 1/2 tsp. salt 2 large bananas 3 c. milk whipped cream 4 egg yolks, slightly beaten 1 (9-inch) baked pie shell Stir together sugar, cornstarch and salt in saucepan. Blend milk and egg yolks and gradually stir into sugar mixture. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and boils. Boil and stir for one minute. Remove from heat; blend in butter and vanilla. Cool at room temperature.

Peel and slice bananas; arrange slices in baked pie shell. Pour cooled filling into pie shell.

Chill pie at least 2 hours. Just before serving, top pie with whipped cream.

Time to Replace Heart Valve Again?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I had mitral valve prolapse for many years.

In 2005, I got an infection, and it ended up as endocarditis. My mitral valve was not able to be repaired. I got a porcine valve. I am starting to have a little problem with my heart. Have you heard of a doctor doing a second replacement? My cardiologist says it is a really big deal. -- J.L.F. ANSWER: Endocarditis is an exceedingly serious infection of the heart valves. It is much more likely in people who have damaged heart valves, such as from rheumatic fever, but it also can happen in people with normal heart valves. Endocarditis is treated with antibiotics, almost always intravenously to begin with, but complications such as an abscess or heart failure may require surgery, either repair or a valve replacement.

I have seen many cases of replacement of a damaged prosthetic valve. As your cardiologist suggests, the risk of the operation is high.

However, if the valve is very damaged, you don’t really have any other options. It is clear that the decision to replace a prosthetic valve is difficult and should be undertaken only if other treatments have failed. An experienced cardiac surgeon, hospital and entire team is critical.

You didn’t say what the new problem with your heart is. A recurrence of infection is fairly common, since artificial valves, both bioprosthetic (like your porcine valve) and mechanical, are at higher risk of becoming infected. Consultation with an infectious disease expert certainly would be appropriate, if that were the case.

ANSWER: Bipolar disorder is a complex spectrum of diseases that have in common drastic changes in mood and behavior. Depression is the most common initial mood disorder in bipolar disorder.

Bipolar I disorder is diagnosed when there are manic episodes. A manic episode is defined medically as an abnormal, persistently elevated mood with increased activity or energy, lasting at least a week. Feelings of increased self-esteem, decreased need for sleep, being unusually talkative, having racing ideas and distractibility are common. Spending sprees, sexual indiscretions and foolish investments sometimes happen during these episodes.

In bipolar II, true manic episodes are not present. Depression always is, as is at least one episode of hypomania, which is similar to manic episodes but less severe or long-lasting. Bipolar II is probably underdiagnosed, partly because hypomania can be hard to recognize.
