For over 90 years wearing the memorial poppy reminds Americans that millions of service men and women sacrificed their lives to keep us free. During World War I poppies unexpectedly bloomed on the scarred battlefields of Flanders Fields.

Their brilliant red, like the blood shed there, is a symbol of hope and a perpetual memorial to the courage displayed there and around the globe. In 1920, after World War I, the poppy became the official flower of The American Legion family to memorialize the soldiers who fought and died during the war.

Today American Legion Auxiliary members throughout the area distribute poppies that are handmade by veterans from both the Bath and Canandaigua VA Medical Centers during May for Memorial Day, a time set aside to remember and honor these fallen military troops. This year Friday, May 26th has been designated National Poppy Day. Poppies are never sold. Each year, members of the American Legion Family, led by the American Legion Auxiliary, distribute poppies with a request that the person receiving the flower

make a donation.

All donations are used to assist and rehabilitate veterans.

This generous support enables American Legion Auxiliary units to fund many local veterans’ programs such as the Richards House, Eagle Star Home, Veterans Outreach Center, Rochester Outpatient Center, Veterans Court, Zion House and the VA hospitals.

Karin (Peterson) Holmes passed away at home in Canadice March 26, 2017, after a long illness. She is survived by her son Kurt Holmes of Conesus, daughter Diane Holmes, grandson Jesse Freund both of Canadice.

Brother Kurt Petersen, sister-in-law, Vera Petersen both of Oakville, Ontario, Canada. Niece, Linda Petersen. Nephews, Paul Petersen, Glenn Petersen, Steven Petersen. Great nieces, Brit, Sydney, and Carmen. Great nephews, Bryce, Alex, Brayden, Erik, and Shan all of Ontario and British Columbia Canada as well as extended family and friends.

“Big things come in small packages” Karin was the epitome of that saying. She was born in Kollund, Denmark. From generations of farmers and having both grandfathers known horse breeders it was her passion to follow in their legacy. Her grandfather Edlif Petersen was known throughout Europe for his majestic Belgian Stallions.

After weathering WWII, she met her husband, an American soldier and immigrated to the United States and had a family. Eventually settling in New York where she started her own business of running a horse farm.

Karin became a successful and accomplished equestrian, trainer, teacher and breeder. She had a keen eye for a good horse and a knack for training those that were difficult, like her beloved “Luke” whom she broke, trained and showed at a competitive level. As a breeder, Karin was sought out for her lovely, talented offspring, most she broke and trained herself. Many became champions. At 80 she was able to show and win with her final baby two-time Grand Champion Bentley.

She was fearless and tireless as a competitor Steeple Chases (winning) eventing, and Dressage before it was taken seriously by her peers.

She studied and trained with the best, George Morris, and Capt. Nadsy.

Her time was devoted to Pony Club, was a member of the Genesee Valley Breeders, Dressage Association, Genesee Valley Fox Hunt Club, and an innovator of many projects.

Karin will be greatly and deeply missed but leaves an immensely rich legacy to so many.

Dianne L. Whitacre (Bartholomew) May 20, 2017 Geneseo/Livonia: Passed to be with her Lord on May 20, 2017 at age 76 years. Predeceased by her son David Hanna and her father Spencer Bartholomew. Survived by her husband of 47 years Steve Whitacre, her son Daniel Hanna, her mother Ruth Traynor, and her sister Donna (Alfred “Tim”) Cole Jr, several nieces & nephews including special nephew Jaimie (Audrey) Cole and niece Jennifer (Dan) Korpanty. Also survived by several cousins and many special friends.

Diane was born May 16, 1941 in Warsaw, NY. She attended high school in Livonia, NY and graduated with an Associates Degree from MCC. She was employed by Rochester Products/Delphi and retired in 2000 after 30 years. She established a successful Ebay business after retirement. Dianne was a devoted mother to both sons, but was known as an especially devoted mother/caretaker to her special needs son, David, who pre-deceased her in 2015. Dianne enjoyed antiquing, antique button collecting, knitting, playing bridge, and adored the many pets she cared for throughout her life. She was an avid Buffalo Bills fan and enjoyed watching all sports. Her most favorite times were spent with her loving husband of 47 years, her son Dan, and her loving family and friends.

Karyn L. Schapp May 18, 2017 Geneseo: Peacefully at the Teresa House on May 18, 2017 Karyn entered into glory at age 62 with her sister by her side. Predeceased by her parents James and Lorraine (Dube) Stewart and her nephew Benjamin Waterman. Survived by her children Shayna Schapp (Jonah Lamers) of the Netherlands, Nathan Schapp (Caitlin Moseley) of Canandaigua, Evan (Jasmine) Schapp of Naples; grandchildren Edi and Carter Schapp; siblings Glenn (Lisa) Stewart of Mendon, Pamela (Dan) Waterman of Livonia, Laurie Stewart of Penfield and Jon (Stephanie) Stewart of Penfield. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, two great-nieces and a great-nephew.

Karyn was born on February 7, 1955 in Cheyenne, Wyoming where her father was stationed in the Air Force. Her family moved to Rochester, New York when her father was hired by Eastman Kodak Company. Karyn helped raise her four brothers and sisters and loved working with children so much she earned a degree in Early Childhood Education. She was a counselor at two Christian camps for children and worked in several day care centers.

Karyn was a strong woman of faith, she loved Jesus and gained strength every day by reading her bible. She often showed acts of kindness to strangers in grocery stores, restaurants and anywhere else she met people. She wrote notes of encouragement and kindness to family, friends and people she barely knew and decorated them with stickers. She loved dancing and would often dance to loud music in her apartment. Karyn spent many of her waking hours praying for others and gave to many charitable organizations who provide for children living in third world countries. Although she had many struggles throughout the years, she always remained strong in her faith and looked forward to the day she would meet Jesus, the source of her strength. We rejoice that she has been made whole and will live eternally in Heaven.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband, who is 73 and otherwise in good health, had a colonoscopy in the summer of 2012 and was told that because no polyps or any problems were found, he did not need another test for 10 years. This October, he was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, which has spread to the abdomen and omentum. He also had seven polyps removed during his latest examination.

My question is, How likely is it that such a virulent cancer could grow in such a short time? I would be resigned to the diagnosis if I didn’t feel that something was missed in the initial exam. Also, I had a colonoscopy done by the same doctor this summer and also was told that I need not come back for 10 years. Should I be concerned? -- H.B. ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear about your husband. What happened is very unusual. All guidelines agree that in a person with a normal colonoscopy, a repeat in 10 years is recommended.

A repeat in five years would have been recommended if a low-risk polyp had been found, earlier with high-risk or multiple polyps. I haven’t personally seen a case like your husband’s, where an advanced cancer presents less than 10 years after a normal colonoscopy. This should happen in fewer than 1 in 1,000 people.

There are several reasons why it can happen. The most important is that even a properly done colonoscopy misses polyps. Very small polyps (less than 5 mm) can be missed 26 percent of the time, but large polyps (greater than 10 mm) are missed only 2 percent of the time. Although the colonoscopy is the best screening test we have for colon cancer, it isn’t perfect. It’s also possible that he just had a very fast-growing cancer.

While I understand your concern about getting yourself an earlier repeat colonoscopy, your risk is very small, and if you trust the doctor who did the colonoscopy, you should get your repeat in 10 years.

On January 9, 2017, we had a house fire that destroyed the inside of our home. We would like to say thank you to the Richmond Fire Department and surrounding towns that came to fight the fire on such a cold and challenging night.

Springtime in Brockport!

Our beautiful village is again restored after a wimpy winter that couldn’t decide what season it was.

Gray days and rain have finally given way to the warmth and sunshine of spring, as streets, storefronts, greenery and flowers have responded; trees reminders of the season just passed; white flower snowballs, even the canal celebrates the season.

A rousing spring concert by our high school bands was a great way to appreciate the coming warmth. I have no car and I watch the changing scene from the 4th floor of Heritage Square, a beautiful apartment complex west of Redman Rd. It includes a marvelous restaurant, woodland trails, and other features. When landscaped, it’ll be Brockport’s most beautiful spot. Our village is a great place to live: No natural disasters, almost any need can be met here. We are very glad and happy to be residents of Brockport.

It’s really sad that a family can’t enjoy having an outside light on their house without having it stolen. Did you know that you can purchase one locally or online? To the person who stole our star shower light...I hope you are enjoying it. You were caught on home surveillance and it has been turned over to law enforcement. Feel free to return it before you’re arrested.

I am getting tired of people using our lawn for a shortcut in this hamlet. Deep ruts were left last week that we will have to repair. Be forewarned you are on security camera and we will be looking at the 24/7 camera periodically. We have a posted sign on our garage that says no trespassing. We will be enforcing it. Have respect for other people’s property.

It works both ways. A few years ago I was driving on a side country road near our home. There were four horseback riders riding in the middle of the road! Not single file. They were riding side by side. Just because you’re on a

country road don’t ride in the whole road side by side. I knew enough not to beep my horn as I previously had owned horses. If the one woman hadn’t had looked back, I would’ve been following them all the way until the end of the road. Obey the traffic rules just like the rest of us. Just because you’re on a country road doesn’t mean you can take up the whole road while riding. I think I was afraid too, worrying if your 1000 lbs. or more animal would spook and hurt and injure me. I expressed my displeasure and they were indignant with me!!!

Shame on the person(s) who stole an ATV from our elderly neighbor’s driveway at 5 in the morning. If your child or family member came home with a used Honda ATV with a cracked red seat, it was NOT gotten legally. Do the right thing and return it.

In response to the sweet dog owner, I am a runner and almost every dog that has bitten me, there have been many, shocked its owner. “I can’t believe (s)he bit you!” Any dog who feels threatened will bite. Most local towns have leash laws, please abide by them and I won’t have to worry about your dog coming up to me. Just so you know, I love my dog dearly but she is not free to run up to people she doesn’t know.
