BEE SAFE W HILE GARDENING TO PROTECT POLLINATORS Stinging insects such as bees and w asps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. How ever, a multitude of factors, including the lack of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pesticide usage, have threatened pollinator health in recent years.

As a result, many people have realized the importanc e of protecting pollinators and even developed gardens geared tow ard providing safe sources of nectar and pollen. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w ants to remind homeow ners that w hile creating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely beneficial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insects can pose significant health and safety risks.

In fact, stinging insects send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital every year.

People w ith know n allergies to insec t stings or w ith asthma should be espec ially c areful around pollinators, as stings could trigger a potentially lifethreatening reaction. There is also a common myth that bees and w asps can only sting once before they die. This only holds true for some species of stinging insects, and people should alw ays be cautious around hives and nests.

If a person comes in close contact w ith a stinging insect, sw atting at it w ill often provoke it to become more aggressive. The best course of action is to remain calm and slow ly w alk in one direction until the insect loses interest.

M aintaining a garden that serves as a w elcome oasis for w ild bees or community bees that are being raised by local professionals is a great w ay to protect pollinators.

W ithout proper beekeeping training, how ever, homeow ners should never allow stinging insects to take up residence on their property.

If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be contacted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe location w here the bees can be allow ed to thrive w ithout posing any dangers to the public. If the hive is located in a building, utilizing a professional is also critically important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover combs could contain honey that can ferment and cause serious damage, as w ell as attract pests to the property.

Your Potential long-term expenses to account for in retirement Retirement planning involves more than just investing in a 401(k) and/ or IRA. Individuals who hope to live comfortably in retirement must account for various expenses, including those associated with their health.

A 2013 report from the U.S. Senate’s Commission on Long-Term Care found that each year an estimated 12 million adults in the United States require some type of long-term care. Planning for the following potential expenses can help men and women ensure they will have enough money to live well in retirement.

• Housing: Many individuals would prefer to spend their golden years living in their own homes. However, adults who can no longer take care of themselves and/or their homes may need to move.

Homeowners who simply want to downsize may be able to finance their transitions to retirement communities by selling their existing homes. But those who need to move into assisted living facilities may find that even selling their homes might not provide enough capital to pay for such residences. According to Genworth’s 2016 Cost of Care Survey, the annual cost of assisted living facilities greatly varies by state, with costs as high as $65,550 in Massachusetts and as low as $30,438 in Missouri. Whether they invest in long-term care insurance or develop another plan with their financial advisors, men and women must consider ways to finance potential housing costs in retirement.

• Renovations: Home renovations are another potential cost in retirement. Aging men and women who can no longer comfortably navigate staircases but are otherwise healthy may need to renovate their homes to account for their limited mobility. Such renovations might include the installation of a staircase chair lift and/or a ramp connected to the entryway of a home. Some may even need to convert a first-floor den or living area into a bedroom, which may also require adding a full bathroom.

• Maintenance: Homeowners who want to stay in their homes in retirement must also factor potential maintenance costs into their retirement plans. Aging men and women may no longer be capable of maintaining their properties in retirement. Consider the potential costs of landscaping, home maintenance and maid services when making a retirement plan.

• Transportation: Diminishing vision and slower reaction times compel many retirees to give up driving. But retirees who still enjoy getting out and about will still need a way to get around. Moving to a retirement community with daily shuttle service to and from town centers is one way for seniors who no longer drive to get around. But men and women who do not want to move to such communities will need to find alternative means of transportation, the costs of which can add up quickly.

Financial freedom in retirement is a goal for many working professionals. Attaining such freedom involves planning and saving for all potential expenses in retirement.

A reversal could mean that all online retailers must collect sales tax. Brick-and-mortar retailers insist it will provide a level playing field with online competitors and help to provide state and local governments with the tax revenue they deserve.

Opponents say that the action would create an undue burden on small retailers who would need to collect state, and possibly local, sales taxes.

Their aim was to design engaging books for children that would communicate everything they had learned.

Cranberry Chutney Makes 3 cups

What is Holistic Dentistry?

1 1-pound bag fresh cranberries 2 navel oranges, unpeeled, cut into 6 wedges and then into thin slices 1⁄3 cup golden raisins 1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1⁄2 teaspoon whole cloves 1⁄2 teaspoon ground ginger 1⁄2 teaspoon kosher salt 1⁄2 cup apple cider 1⁄2 cup honey, preferably cranberry honey 1⁄4 cup apple cider vinegar 1. Pour the cranberries into a 2-quart pot. Add the oranges, raisins, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, salt, apple cider, honey, and vinegar. Bring to a boil, and then reduce the heat to low and simmer until the chutney thickens, about 20 minutes.

2. Remove from the heat and serve warm or, if you prefer, chill and serve cold.

What Could Cause Voice to Change?

--DEAR DR. ROACH: Over the past year, my voice has become hoarse or raspy. I find that I often have to clear my throat while speaking. I’ve had a stomach endoscopy and a colonoscopy done, the results of which were noted as “normal.” Nothing has changed in my life, such as climate, diet, clothing, furnishings, etc. I have never smoked.

I suspect it may be allergies, since antihistamines seem to help somewhat. Is this the best solution? -- N.G. ANSWER: Vocal changes can be the result of many common conditions. Voice changes lasting more than two or three weeks should be evaluated by an ENT doctor, since there are serious conditions that can manifest in voice changes. In particular, anyone with a history of smoking needs a prompt and thorough evaluation for voice changes, since the nerve to the vocal cord is commonly damaged by lung cancer. Fortunately, alternate diagnoses, such as chronic laryngitis and benign vocal fold lesions (such as polyps) are more common. Reflux disease can affect the vocal cords, which may be why you had the upper endoscopy.

Chronic sinusitis with postnasal drip is one cause of hoarseness that can be improved with antihistamines. However, I would not be comfortable treating this long-term with antihistamines without a more thorough evaluation than you have reported. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife works in the operating room of a local hospital. She came down with a Staph infection, and has been treated. Do only certain blood types catch a Staph infection? She is type A, and I am O positive. -- R.S. ANSWER: Staphylococcus aureus is a feared infection, and rightly so -- it is an aggressive bacteria that is capable of going through tissue due to its digestive enzymes. Recently, resistance to multiple antibiotics has made it even more dangerous. Methicillin-resistant Staph aureus (MRSA) is resistant to many antibiotics, even though we don’t use the antibiotic methicillin anymore.

Anyone can be infected by Staph, and most of us will have a Staph infection at some point in our lives, such as a boil (furuncle) or abscess. Although I did read in a popular book that people with blood type A are more likely to get Staph infections, that seems to be myth, not science. Certainly, people of any blood type can get life-threatening Staph infections. All kinds of Staph, including MRSA, can be transmitted via the hands, which is why handwashing is so important. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: You recently mentioned that apples are high in sugar. I am a 74-year-old man with borderline diabetes and an A1c level of 5.7 percent. I have been eating an apple a day for a long time and worry that I might be making my diabetes worse.

-- L.T. ANSWER: The best data I can find on this still show that whole fruit, such as apples, do not adversely affect blood-sugar control if eaten in reasonable quantities (i.e., up to four a day). An apple a day is still good advice. James A. Yamonaco April 17, 2018 James A. Yamonaco, 70 of Leicester, passed away on Tuesday April 17, 2018 at his home. He was born in Niagara Falls, NY on July 10, 1947 a son to Minnie D. (Valente) Yamonaco of Leicester and the late Anthony F. Yamonaco.

Jim served with the US Army during the Vietnam War. He worked for Buffalo Crushed Stone where he was the Port Director for Buffalo retiring in 2007. After retirement he returned back to work for a few years working for American Rock Salt Co. in Mt. Morris. Jim enjoyed golfing and hunting. He was the rock of the family, always willing to help someone in need; his biggest love was his family.

Cole and children; Kimberly Cole of OR, Matthew (Eileen) Cole of MA, and Lance Cole of AZ; step-daughters, Nicole (Russell) Dole of MA and Tamara (Bryan) Albert of Geneseo; 12 grandchildren. Siblings: Jean Webster, Betty Harlow, and Bill (Colleen) Cole.

Also survived by several nieces and nephews, cousins, his church family at Faith Fellowship Church, and many dear friends.

Jim was born on November 14, 1940 in Lowell, MA to parents Horatio and Violet (Hicks) Cole. He graduated from Concord High School and later served in the US Air Force from 1959-1963. Jim worked as a welding supervisor at Broomfield Labs in Bolton, MA for 27 years. He served faithfully at Hope Chapel in Sterling, MA and later after moving to Geneseo, NY, he attended and served at Faith Fellowship Church in Lakeville, NY. Jim was an avid golfer at Sonyea Golf Club for many years.

Hemlock/Livonia: Peacefully on January 13, 2018 at age 95. Predeceased by her husband Kenneth Gladding, grandson David Nichols, brother Theodore Henry Jr., and sisters; Marion Murray and Laura North. Survived by children; Jeanette (John) Durkee, Kenneth Gladding Jr., Barbara (William) Muscato, Ann (William) Watt, and Edward Gladding; 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren. Also survived by her brother Ralph (Sue) Henry and many nieces, nephews, and other loving family and friends.

Ruth was born on December 3, 1922 in Richmond, NY to parents Theodore Henry Sr. and Onnolee (Purcell) Henry. She married Kenneth E. Gladding on November 10, 1940. She worked at General Motors Rochester Products for many years and was the “Avon Lady” for the Livonia and Hemlock communities for over 30 years. Ruth was a member of the Hemlock Grange for 75 years, which she was very proud of. She was a dedicated and lifelong member of the Hemlock Baptist Church.

Ruth’s Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 21st, 2018, 11am, at the Hemlock Baptist Church, 4738 Main Street, Hemlock, NY 14466. Burial Evergreen Cemetery, Bristol, NY. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Hemlock Baptist Church at the address above.
