Charlie was a WWII Navy Veteran. He served in the Pacific Theatre from 1943-1946, 102nd Naval “Seabee” Battalion enlisting in May 1943 in Albany, NY. He was a retiree of Alliance Gleason Company, Rochester, NY. A special thank you to the Livingston County Hospice Team, Laurie, Robin, Kerry, Serena and neighbor, Jackie. Also to his Night Angels, Debbie, Molly, Laurie and Melissa.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of East Avon for 67 years, a past member of the Avon Fire Department, and was a founding member of the Avon Bowmen Club. Orris was a loving, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a retiree of Eastman Kodak Company, where he worked for 37 years, and was an avid hunter and sportsman all his life.

Santa and his Elves to Hold 4th Annual Christmas Day Charity Run/Walk to Benefit the House of Mercy

By Christopher Herman Santa Claus will be making a special appearance after delivering gifts to Rochester area children again this year. Before returning to the North Pole for rest and relaxation, Santa will run in the 4th Annual Christmas Day Charity Walk/Run to Benefit the House of Mercy. This event started in 2014 when runners passed through “Tent City, Sanctuary Village” and saw first-hand the scope of homelessness in the community we call home. Six runners collected clothing and money that was delivered to the shelter that first year. The run grew to 12-15 runners in year two and attracted around 50 last year.

“This run truly exhibits the spirit of the holiday season, no matter what holiday you celebrate. We have created a holiday tradition that we can all be proud of, one that truly impacts lives here in the Rochester community,” explains event organizer Christopher Herman. “I cannot thank the Rochester running community enough for making this event more powerful each year. It is the gift I most look forward to each December.”

Though not an official “race,” and with no religious, political or individual store affiliations, this FREE event has grown each year in the spirit of the season thanks simply to a bunch of wonderful people and businesses in our area. “We were running out of food, running out of clothing, running out of toys, and they came running to our rescue,” said Sister Grace Miller, Founder of the House of Mercy, when asked about a previous year’s run.

Fleet Feet Sports Rochester has been a supporter since the beginning and will be accepting donations of clothing, non-perishable food items, new unopened toys and money at both of their Rochester locations again this year. Medved Running and Walking and Rochester Running Co. were added as donation dropoff locations last year and will again make their respective locations available for those wishing to drop off items for the shelter. With the cold Rochester winters, the shelter is always in need of socks, underwear, hats, gloves, boots, hand warmers and coats.

We are excited to announce that AmVets Thrift Stores will be assisting this year by donating any unsellable items that the shelter will be able to use.

Donations can be dropped off to any Fleet Feet, Medved or Rochester Running Co. locations between December 1st and December 24th or brought to the event on Christmas Day. Donations of new, unopened toys, however, MUST be dropped off BEFORE December 15th as they will be delivered to the shelter on December 16th, 2017. The House of Mercy is in need of over 2,000 new, unopened toys to fulfill the needs of their “nice list” this year.

On December 16th, Team RWB Rochester will deliver all collected toys to the House of Mercy so that they can get them to families in need before the holiday. The shelter is expecting to feed dinner to roughly 150 individuals that evening, and Amiel’s Subs & Roast Beef has graciously offered to provide dinner for them all. Team RWB Rochester will serve this meal.

The “main event,” the 4th Annual Christmas Day Run / Walk to benefit the House of Mercy, will take place on Christmas Day morning, December 25th, 2017. Participants will meet at the Fleet Feet Sports Amory location (155 Culver Rd., Rochester NY 14620) at 9:00 am where Santa and his elves will consolidate all donations to be transported to the shelter. Those walking the 2.9 miles to the shelter will head out at 9:30 am with runners following at 10:00 am. Upon Santa’s arrival everyone is encouraged to help unload donations for the shelter. As is the case every year, volunteers are needed that are willing to help transport donations to the House of Mercy, as well as transporting walkers and runners back to the Fleet Feet parking lot.

How aging adults can maintain their mental acuity Aging is associated with or linked to a host of mental and physical side effects. For example, many adults expect their vision to deteriorate as they grow older. Such a side effect can be combatted with routine eye examinations that may indicate a need for a stronger eyeglass prescription, a relatively simple solution that won’t impact adults’ daily lives much at all.

While physical side effects like diminished vision might not strike much fear in the hearts of aging men and women, those same people may be concerned and/or frightened by the notion of agerelated cognitive decline. Some immediately associate such decline with Alzheimer’s disease, an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that gradually destroys memory and cognitive skills, ultimately compromising a person’s ability to perform even the simplest of tasks. But age-related cognitive decline is not always symptomatic of Alzheimer’s disease. Learning about Alzheimer’s and how to maintain mental acuity can help aging men and women better understand the changes their brains might be undergoing as they near or pass retirement age.

Is Alzheimer’s disease hereditary? The National Institute on Aging notes that only a very rare form of Alzheimer’s disease is inherited. Early-onset familial Alzheimer’s disease, or FAD, is caused by mutations in certain genes. If these genes are passed down from parent to child, then the child is likely, but not certain, to get FAD. So while many adults may be concerned about Alzheimer’s because one of their parents had the disease, the NIA notes that the majority of Alzheimer’s cases are late-onset, which has no obvious family pattern.

Can Alzheimer’s disease be prevented? Studies of Alzheimer’s disease are ongoing, but to date there is no definitive way to prevent the onset of the disease.

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Pick a partner. Whether it’s a spouse or a friend who is physically active or wants to be, try exercising with a partner, at least initially. Doing so can provide the motivation you need and partners can serve as safety nets should you need assistance completing an exercise or suffer an injury and require medical attention. Personal trainers can serve as your partner, and many gyms offer discounts to seniors on personal training services.

How can I maintain mental acuity as I age?

Researchers have not yet determined a way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, but adults can take certain steps to maintain their mental acuity into retirement.

• Exercise regularly. Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.

• Read more. Avid readers may be happy to learn that one of their favorite pastimes can improve the efficiency of their cognitive systems while delaying such systems’ decline. A 2013 study published in the journal Neurology by researchers at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center found that mentally active lifestyles may not prevent the formations of plaques and tangles associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but such lifestyles decreases the likelihood that the presence of plaques or tangles will impair cognitive function.

• Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

The idea of age-related cognitive decline strikes fear in the hearts of many men and women, but there are ways for adults to maintain their mental acuity well into their golden years.

Bakery Clerk Rudeness This week was my husband’s birthday. I ordered a cake with a picture on it. I went there and it took them 20 minutes to find the cake. Meanwhile I was upset. No, I did not curse, I didn’t make a scene, I did not scream, but I was upset.

Woman working there snapped at me, “That’s enough.” Yes I talked to the assistant manager, but I won’t be buying a cake from you in the future. I am a 59 year old woman, who suffers from health problems; I didn’t deserve to be yelled at and told that. Still waiting for the top manager’s viewpoint for him to call. I got in my truck afterwards and it was all I could do was to keep from

crying. First thing in the morning I don’t want rudeness from your workers. It was uncalled for. Put yourself in my situation - the one who did it.

Tired of people who do not know how to use a traffic circle or choose to ignore the rules.

When I am in a circle I have the right-of-way, not you who wants to enter. I have come close to hitting people almost daily because they insist on entering when it is not their turn. Some people enter at excessive speed; some never even look to the left to see if anyone is coming.

Almost hit a guy who never looked and also had his cellphone glued to his ear. Yield does mean stop if there is already traffic coming. It does not mean speed up to get in while you can.

My doctor does not seem to worry about it, even when I’m not feeling well at all. -- B.C. ANSWER: The average temperature for most people is not the 98.6 that I, at least, was taught growing up. Body temperature varies during the day -- it’s a bit lower in the morning and higher in the evening, but it averages about 98.2 degrees. Your observations show that your body temperatures are well within the normal variation.

A temperature of 99 is not, strictly speaking, a fever. Fever normally is defined as greater than 101.5, but can be lower in people with severe disease of the immune system. Most cases of fever are temporary viral infections, but fever can be seen with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases without infection, and as a result of some medications. ROACH: Years ago, my husband took Lipitor, and after taking it for quite a while, his muscles and limbs developed a profound weakness; he could barely hold up a shovel and had no muscle tone. The doctor switched him to Vytorin, and it went away.

Now he is experiencing similar problems after taking Vytorin for many years -- his joints ache, he feels like his body is slow to follow “orders” to move and his feet hurt. Could Vytorin now be the culprit? -- J.H. ANSWER: Lipitor (atorvastatin) and simvastatin are cholesterollowering medications in the class called statins. Vytorin is a combination of simvastatin and another, nonstatin medication called ezetimibe. Muscle aches and even muscle breakdown are uncommon (but not rare) side effects of all statin drugs. The side effect usually happens in the first six months of taking the medicine, but still can happen even after years of taking the medicine. Given your husband’s history, I would recommend talking with his doctor about stopping the medicine. Changing statins (as your husband did, from Lipitor to simvastatin) can relieve the problem sometimes.

There are other causes of joint and foot aches, and slowness in moving sounds like it might be a neurologic or rheumatologic issue rather than a side effect. But a trial off the medicine is still a good first step. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 79-year-old male with mild Parkinson’s disease and Type 2 diabetes. I can walk about 10 feet before becoming terribly short of breath and weak. I have been this way for several years, and it has become increasingly worse. Can you help me? -- K.C. ANSWER: Neither Parkinson’s disease nor Type 2 diabetes explains terrible shortness of breath on mild exertion. There are two types of cholesterol, one that can make the arteries less flexible and therefore make a person more susceptible to heart attack or stroke; and the other that actually protects against heart attack. Cholesterol cannot dissolve in the blood, which means it has to be transported to and from the cells by carriers known as lipoproteins.

Low-density lipoproteins, or LDL, are considered “bad” cholesterol. When too much bad cholesterol is circulating in the blood, LDL can slowly build up on the inner walls of the arteries, possibly even teaming with other substances to form plaque, a thick, hard deposit that narrows the arteries and makes them less flexible.

High-density lipoprotein, or HDL, is what’s considered “good” cholesterol.

That’s because medical experts feel HDL carries cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver, where cholesterol is then passed from the body. In addition, some experts also feel HDL removes excess cholesterol from arterialplaque, slowing its buildup as a result. And though cholesterol is commonly, and falsely, considered a dirty word, low levels of HDL actually increase a person’s risk of heart disease.

A simple blood test can help men and women learn their HDL and LDL levels, and if they need to make any changes to get on the right track.
