CHRISTMAS TREE FACTS • Every state in the United States grows Christmas trees. • Germans are credited with bringing the first Christmas trees into the home and decorating them in the spirit of Christmas. The first recorded reference to the Christmas tree dates back to the 16th century. • Tree farms are beneficial to the environment because they reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air and help counter global warming. • The most common Christmas tree species are balsam fir, Douglas-fir, Fraser fir, noble fir, Scotch pine, Virginia pine and white pine. • Christmas trees can be recycled into mulch.

The holiday season is a special time of year to give thanks and spend time with loved ones. While the holidays are an inherently happy time, that joyful mood can be marred by the crooks who like to take advantage of people’s generosity, as well as their propensity to pay less attention to their surroundings as they do during less hectic times of year. Instances of certain crimes, particularly theft and identity theft, increase around the holiday season. Allstate Insurance advises that break-ins in residential areas may increase during the holiday season as well. That’s because thieves know that many homes are empty or cars are full of highpriced presents. Put the focus back on good cheer, delicious food, celebrations and gifting - protect yourself and your property this holiday season.

HOW TO MANAGE HOLIDAY SHOPPING TRIPS WITH TOTS IN TOW Holiday shopping has changed considerably since the dawn of the Information Age. Whereas holiday shopping once required shoppers to spend hours perusing stores at the local mall, nowadays many shoppers get the bulk of their shopping done online. Shopping online may be convenient, but more traditional holiday shopping still affords shoppers the chance to find great deals, especially at the last minute. Parents may prefer to leave the kids at home when holiday shopping, but sometimes they don’t have a choice. Fortunately, there are ways to manage holiday shopping trips with kids in tow.

Serves 6 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 pound chanterelles or other wild mushrooms, cleaned and cut into bite-sized pieces Salt and freshly ground black pepper 11/2 pounds haricots verts or green beans, trimmed - Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. - Meanwhile, heat the butter and the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute, or until it becomes translucent. Add the mushrooms, cooking them until they give off their juices and then reabsorb them, 5 to 7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Keep the mushrooms warm on the stovetop. - Add the beans to the boiling water and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, or until slightly tender (haricots verts will take less time than green beans). Drain. - Transfer about half of the mushrooms to a small dish and keep warm. Add the beans to the mushrooms in the skillet and stir to combine. Mound the beans and the mushrooms gently on a serving platter and top with the reserved mushrooms. Season again with salt and pepper.

HOW TO MAKE GIFT WRAPPING EASIER Keep all of your supplies together. Store wrapping paper, scissors, tags, tape, ribbons, and whatever else you may need to wrap gifts in one convenient location. This cuts down on time wasted hunting for supplies around the house.

Quick Cleaning Sometimes the joy of hosting can be overshadowed by the task of preparing for your guests. Although a thorough cleaning of the home is great if you have the time, it may not be necessary. Go from room to room identifying spaces that are in need of a thorough cleaning. Spend time in the kitchen clearing clutter from the counters and make sure the dining space is clean and the table is presentable. A table runner and a centerpiece of festive flowers can brighten up the space instantly. Fluff cushions on sofas and give floors or carpets a quick vacuuming. Always be sure the bathrooms are clean and fresh, with laundered hand towels at the ready. Children’s bedrooms and other areas of the house may not require such a critical eye. Simply keep doors closed in off-limits rooms.

70th Anniversary Series- Volume 5

T han ksgivin g A time to count blessings! For 70 years, we have been blessed in many ways by the wonderful people who have been so instrumental in our success. Seventy Years of business means many, many employees who have come through our doors: Some as their life’s work, some as a stepping stone to different jobs and professions, some as a second job to help make ends meet, and some “seniors” looking for a way to continue their involvement and productivity. It would be impossible to name them all, but we will attempt to share with you the people from our past, most of whom were with us for many years. This by no means lessens our appreciation for every person we have employed along the way. These names are not necessarily listed in chronological order, and for many we no longer have the records to note their dates of service. However, rest assured that these people were the mainstays of our company for many years! In the very beginnings, Clare Harrison, Joyce Harrison, Al Wambold, Mildred Cook, Ruth Twamley, Alice Mairs, Jack Browne, George Novosal, Dave Kingston…. As time went on, in our Creative Department– Sally DeMunn (36 years), Jodi Rowcliffe (18 years), Amy McAleavy (14 years), Leanne Marquis (8 years), Christine Martin, Jeff Young (15 years), Kevin Swallow (IT coordinator – 18 years), Erica Linderman (9 years), In our Office and Clerical Department– Mary Ann Close (32 years), Henrietta Robinson (18 years), Maggie Robinson (28 years), Jacki Baylor, Jim Fulmer, Germaine Bostwick, Kathie Doser (37 years), Tom Ulatowski (17 years), In our Promotional Product and Printing Division– Mark Evans, Mary Myers, Lori Volkmar (15 years), Mike McFarland, Leigh Normoyle (12 years), Barb Cornell (14 years), Lorie Browne (12 years), In our Production and Pre-press Departments– Todd Gillard, Larry Craft, Dave Harrington (21 years), Bob Gilbert (20 years), Pat King, Gary Rumfelt, Pete Swanson, In our Sales Department– Cindy Sattora (the legend! 40 years), Cindy Gardner, Cindy Clements (31 years). Three Cindy’s in one department!! Lisa Neyhart, Denise Martin (22 years), Gregg Henderson (23 years), Sue Gyore, Paul Rugala (22 years), Tonja Hynes, Vic Thomas, Bill Stevens (16 years), JoAnne Kingsbury (25 years), Toni Shoap (26 years), Angie Raab (19 years), Leanna DiRisio (8 years), Judy Miller-Keenan (12 years), Lynne Standish (20 years), Nancy Chodak (8 years), Dan Welch, Janet Olexy (10 years), Diane Bodine (14 years). As you can see our employee retention of these people and many others has provided consistency and a deep commitment to our company. It’s a wonderful thing when employees develop a sense of “ownership” and take pride in their work! We have been blessed! No article of thanks would be complete without thanking our parents, Roger and Jane Harrison who had

the foresight and determination to begin this business in 1948. Jane one of three daughters of Jim and Lu Gulnac, was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in Geneseo. She worked as a secretary at International Salt company for several years until she married. Roger was born and raised in Castile, one of four siblings of Homer and Lillian Harrison. Roger served in the Air Force during WWII. After the untimely death of Homer and his oldest son Robert, Lillian (Granny as we knew her) married Al Wambold, who would one day work as a pressman in our early years. Our parents made many sacrifices in those early years to keep the business afloat and to build it both in advertising and circulation. In later years it fell on our Mom to continue the business. She was a tough, astute businessperson, and one of the most generous, too. Mom and Angie D’Angelo (Angie’s Style Shop) began the Avon Businesswomen’s organization to interact and share ideas. For many years there was an annual banquet which was well attended by all area businesswomen. In those days she picked up and opened all the mail, even on Saturdays, and recorded all bills and payments. She never missed a day! Also, without the benefit of computers and all the conveniences in record keeping, the weekly payroll was done by hand, and she gauged if we were doing OK by checking the balance in the checkbook. If that was good, then we were good. As progressive as she was in some ways, the computers and bookkeeping methods of today would be so foreign to her, and she might not trust them. In her era, everything was handwritten and figured. Mom always made sure payroll was covered every week. None of her employees would ever go without a paycheck – they had families to feed and bills to pay. However, she always paid herself last, if there was enough, and our names were on the list right before hers, so a few times we also went without a paycheck! To say the least, our lives have been an adventure for all these years, ups and downs, funny memories, sad memories, but mostly a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction that we have done our best – as we know that’s what our parents would have wanted! Happy Thanksgiving to all our past and present employees, advertisers and readers. Without you there would be no story to tell! In a future article we will highlight our current staff . . . .stay tuned!

Family owned and operated since 1948 …stay tuned for volume 6 next month

Live comfortably on less Many people look toward retirement with mixed feelings. There is the anticipation and excitement of no longer having to stick to a set schedule. However, there may be some trepidation about living without a steady income. Bloomberg financial experts found the number of Americans aged 65 and older without a disability that weren’t in the labor force rose to 800,000 in the fourth quarter of 2016. This has become a long-standing trend of Baby Boomers leaving the workforce and entering retirement. Yet, a Statistics Canada study of people between the ages 60 and 64 who had left long-term employment found 43 percent of them were working again, most within a year of leaving their job. Although boredom may have compelled many of those people to reenter the workforce, some may have started working again to make ends meet. Researchers found the higher the earnings in one’s late 40s, the more likely a retiree is to go back to work. While retirees may need to alter their spending habits, it is possible to live happily on less. Here are some ways to do just that. • Accurately assess home expenses. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling says the cost of home-related expenses accounts for roughly 45 percent of spending for retirees. Individuals can add up exactly how much their homes are costing them and then decide if downsizing is a practical solution. Downsizing has a host of benefits, not the least of which is reducing housingrelated expenses. • Invest in health care. Unexpected health care costs can quickly deplete individuals’ finances. That’s why it is essential to have a solid insurance plan in place. Health care planning also may include thinking ahead to long-term care, such as assisted living and nursing homes. One may have to make concessions elsewhere, but investing in health care can assuage concerns men and women might have about the cost of living in their golden years. • Use alternative transportation. Cars can be expensive. A budget-friendly alternative to driving is to use public transportation or transportation services provided to seniors free or for nominal fees. • Take advantage of senior discounts. Many restaurants, stores and service centers offer discounts to seniors. The starting age for discounts may vary from store to store, so always ask before cashing out. • Shop for food differently. Bulk buys may have been appropriate for men and women when there were kids running around, but emptynesters can cut back on food expenses. Shopping sales and making more meals at home can help seniors save money. The market research firm NPD Group found that in-home meals cost roughly one-third of what it costs to eat the same food at a restaurant. Save dining out for special occasions. Retirees can make changes to save money without negatively affecting their quality of life.

For the last 30 years Lions clubs around the world have proudly sponsored the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in local schools and youth groups. This art contest for kids encourages young people worldwide to express their visions of peace. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the contest, the Lions have updated the look and encourage every Lions club to engage with the youth in their community to sponsor a Peace Poster Contest. The theme of the 2017-2018 Peace Poster Contest is “The Future of Peace.” Students, ages 11, 12 or 13 are eligible to participate. Each poster is judged on originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme. Posters advance through several judging levels: local, district, multiple district and international. At the international level, judges from the art, peace, youth, education and media communities select one grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners. Congratulations to the Dansville Lions Club winners: 1st Place: Emma Heiman, 2nd Place: Emma Ognen. The Dansville Lions 1st Place winner, Emma Heiman also won at the District level and her poster now goes on to the State level in May. Congratulations and Best of Luck!

Here’s what happens when you shop local 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. 2. You embrace what makes your community unique You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. so why would you want your community to look that way? 3. You create local jobs Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. When you shop locally, you help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions. 4. You help the environment Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. 5. You nurture community Local business owners know you, and you know them. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. 6. You conserve your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— in your community!

7. You create more choice Locally owned businesses pick the items and products they sell based on what they know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own individual markets. 8. You took advantage of their expertise You are their friends and neighbors, and locally owned businesses have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. They’re passionate about what they do. Why not take advantage of it? 9. You invested in entrepreneurship Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. 10. You made your community a destination The more interesting and unique your community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

On “Halloween Nite” the Town of Riga Recreation Department along with the Churchville Lions Club, hosted their annual Halloween Parade to provide the community’s young “Trick or Treaters” a safe environment in which to participate. The parade started at the Churchville Commons and was lead up Main Street to the Church Lodge in Churchville Park. Once there the youngsters were treated to apples, cider, donuts, and of course, bags of candy. A costume contest was also held. HUGE “Thank Yous” go out to the following people and organizations that continue to make this event memorable

Regarding the children showing disrespect in the street - To those who it is done to, my advice is to call the police. A number of years ago, children had a skateboard ramp on this road, and they taunted me and harassed me and wouldn’t leave me alone when I walked down to the store. So since the adults

On behalf of our family and that of Coach David Swinton, we would like to thank the many donors and helping hands who made our recent fundraiser, “Play It Forward” such a success at

Notre Dame High School. Our main purpose was to honor Coach Swinton and our beloved daughter, Christina Volpe, both of whom were taken from our community far too soon. The event featured an alumni basketball game and sports related activity. The event was a great success and the bleachers at Notre Dame High School were full the night of our event. We raised over $5200 to give to local charities and causes. We thank especially Mike Rapone and his staff at Notre Dame who made this all possible. Gratefully, John and Margaret Volpe

wouldn’t do anything and I got tired of their taunts and disrespect and not wanting to move, I called the sheriff. After they got a talking to, the adults and the kids were basically told to leave me alone. Would’ve handled it myself but even the adults were calling me names. After that had no problems. Not only the harassment, but there were safety issues of the kids playing in the road as the speed limit is not observed on this street. Next time call the police.

accommodating actions. Make sure everything is in writing and I mean everything, especially lawn care and garbage disposal. If you do rent from this landlord and decide to move out, do it as quickly as possible as this landlord will change the locks without prior notice even if your property is still there and charge you for the lock. Unfortunately there is nothing that can stop them. Don’t be fooled like the last young couple.

raised, the physician merely ignores it – or any other topic of concern to the patient! Additionally, this behavior amounts to “de facto” elder abuse. Someone, especially regulatory agencies, needs to EFFECTIVELY and IMMEDIATELY curtail this situation. Two physicians later, I’m now looking for a (3rd) replacement physician that both: does not push insulin – AND – does listen and cooperate with me.

Anyone planning on renting the 3 bedroom Ranch house on [local Street in local town] needs to be aware that the landlord has a history of unlawful behavior and charging false claims to security deposit. Don’t be fooled by seemingly

When will these local physicians and their respective health care systems quit pushing insulin on unwilling adults? This behavior is lazy and invidious. There are alternatives to insulin, but when the issue has been repeatedly

To the person who stole my father’s cash box from his tiny vegetable stand: I hope you enjoyed stealing from an 85-yearold man who takes pride in his garden. I hope someday someone steals from you so you know how it feels.

Thank you to the people who stopped and helped our daughter on 11/09, and a special thank you to the woman in the beauty salon. It warms our hearts that there are still people out there who are willing to help a stranger. Thank you again.

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

585-447-9108 APPLES are a low-calorie source of soluble fiber, and also are a good source of vitamin C, which can boost the immune system. But apples are more than just a low-calorie food that contributes to feelings of fullness. Finnish researchers who studied dietary data of more than 9,200 men and women found that those who ate apples frequently had lower risk of stroke than those who did not eat apples. That could be attributable to the effect of soluble fiber on LDL cholesterol as well as the effects of the antioxidant compounds found in apples.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Can Nicotine Offer Relief for Colitis? DEAR DR. ROACH: I just read your column about ulcerative colitis. Many years ago, I read about a possible relief: nicotine. I had a friend who was in dire straits for years, and he was ready to get a colostomy. He had not responded to all kinds of steroids and expensive meds. He was treated with nicotine patches, and in 48 hours he had relief. He wore a patch for at least a year. He moved years ago, but when I knew him, he looked at nicotine as a cure. Any thoughts? -- R. ANSWER: I learned in medical school that ulcerative colitis could appear or flare after quitting smoking, and that studies were being done to look at nicotine as a treatment. Since then, nicotine has been more extensively studied but has not found a major role in the treatment of UC. It is used occasionally and even more occasionally successful in people who have not gotten relief with more-common treatments. The side effects of high doses cause many people to not tolerate it. The booklet on diverticulitis explains this common inflammatory bowel disorder and its treatments. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 502W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Have you heard of Boswellia? Would you recommend it for arthritic pain? If so, what dosage and how often would be safe? What about negative side effects? -- F.P. ANSWER: Boswellia, also called Indian frankincense, is an herb that has been used for millennia in India as an anti-inflammatory for relief of arthritis pain. I was able to find a well-done study from 2011 that showed significant benefit in reducing pain and improving function in people with osteoarthritis of the knee. The only side effects seen were minor headache and nausea. Other studies, all small and relatively short, confirmed these results. Based on these small studies, it appears that Boswellia extract may have benefit in improving pain and function in people with osteoarthritis of the knee. I found products that are labeled as having what the study medicine did (most commonly 100 mg once daily, containing at least 20 percent AKBA, the active ingredient). However, let me emphasize that supplements are not subject to oversight by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In February 2015, the New York state attorney general’s office accused four major retailers of selling fraudulent and potentially dangerous herbal supplements under their store brands. Of the products they tested, 78 percent did not contain any of the herbs on their labels, and some contained substances potentially dangerous to those with allergies (including wheat in products labeled “wheat- and gluten-free,” and powdered legumes, a potential risk for those with peanut allergies). These products were labeled “standardized” and “guaranteed.” It is very frustrating to learn about potentially valuable therapies that offer an alternative to prescription medicines, and have the companies that supply them be untrustworthy. There may be good manufacturers, but with no way of independently testing their products, I cannot give a recommendation for a particular brand. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. “Goodwill is earned by many acts; it can be lost by one…”

~ Duncan Stuart Goodwill is priceless. It can exist between individuals, such as neighbors and friends. A company needs the goodwill of those with whom the company does business. When goodwill exists, each party regards the other in a friendly way. Every action is assumed to be motivated by good intentions. Goodwill is built gradually by a long series of transactions in an atmosphere of trust and friendship. A single act which betrays a confidence or takes an unfair advantage can shatter a relationship which has been built slowly over a long period. We believe that a funeral ceremony should be a beautiful experience, helping the bereaved in their first step towards adjustment to their loss. Call us first.

ENDURING THOUGHTS Funerals are ceremonies that have the singular ability to help us come to terms with the death of loved ones. The ceremony confirms the reality of death and helps us express our feelings of loss. It gives the living the opportunity to remember the person who died and to say good-bye. With all these important expectations in mind, a funeral should be as unique as the life it remembers. It is the funeral director’s job to do everything possible to incorporate any ideas into the service and burial that will most fully evoke the spirit of the departed. This includes the use of video and audio presentations or any element that serves to personalize the funeral or memorial service. At KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME we value our reputation for providing the highest quality of professional services with the personal attention and understanding needed to help you and your family through a difficult time. To learn more about the funeral and memorial services we offer, please call (585) 346-5401. Our Livonia and Honeoye, NY facilities provide a spacious and comfortable atmosphere to share memories of your loved ones. QUOTE: “I have seen death too often to believe in death. IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves shortand long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day.
