Navigating the waters of funeral trusts Discussing end-of-life issues can be an emotional experience. Making decisions upon the death of a loved one can be challenging, especially if the wishes of the deceased are murky or unknown. Funeral trusts often help families avoid making decisions at times when their emotions may make such decisions more difficult.

What is preplanning a funeral?

Preplanning a funeral can save family and friends from having to make difficult decisions. It also enables people to choose their burial space, services and transportation. Preplanning also allows people to pay for or arrange payment for their funeral costs ahead of time. According to Consumer Protection Ontario, a person can pre-plan a funeral without prepaying. However, many people prefer to have all financial components in place as well for maximum convenience.

What is a funeral trust?

Funeral trust can be a smart investment for people who have not spelled out their wishes in a will or conveyed them in writing to someone who will be managing their estate.

Funeral trusts may be referred to as revocable or irrevocable. An irrevocable funeral trust, or IFT, is a tool people who are facing the high cost of skilled nursing care can consider. An IFT establishes an account into which money for funeral expenses is deposited.

The money cannot be withdrawn or refunded, and funds must be used for funeral expenses.

In the United States, an IFT is often considered an eligible expense during the social services spend-down process. That means the money deposited in the trust is exempt as a countable asset from any financial look-back period that helps determine eligibility for government healthcare services, such as Medicaid.

Revocable funeral trusts can be cancelled. According to the National Care Planning Council, a revocable trust can be created by anyone and, at a later date, can be dissolved by the person who originally created it.

Various organizations oversee the investment and management of prepaid funeral trust accounts.

When is a trust unnecessary?

In certain instances, a funeral trust will not be needed. Those who have the means to fund long-term care services and will not need assistance later in life may not want their money locked up in a trust. Others opt for life insurance policies to pay for funeral needs.

Assistance with funeral trusts Funeral homes may work directly with companies that manage funeral funds. Speak with a funeral director if you want to learn more about trusts. Trusts also can be established by working with an elder care attorney or with a funeral trust agency.

Taking care of funeral planning in advance can relieve families of the stress of making funeral decisions in the wake of a loved one’s death.

Loneliness has become an issue of growing public concern, particularly loneliness among our elderly. A local bunch of seniors is combatting this problem and having fun at the same time.

They belong to the long-standing group, the York-Leicester Towners. This seniors group was founded under the name York Towners in 1973 and will celebrate its 45 year anniversary this October. In 1973, Rev. Neil Frude, who had come to be the pastor of the York United Presbyterian Church, wanted to organize a group of seniors who could come together for friendship. Seniors responded, and the group has grown from its original 31 participants to its current size of 121 members.

When this group of 31 people met for the first time to establish their group, they gathered together in the York Town Hall. According to the Towners’ records, “Miss Beulah Spittal of the Caledonia Senior Citizens attended our meeting and gave us many helpful hints and suggestions in regard to forming such a group in York.” The group’s records further state that, “it was also decided to meet twice a month, the first and third Wednesday of each month at 12:30pm in the Town Hall. Each person [is] to bring their own sandwich, beverages to be furnished. The group was invited to join the Geneseo group on October 7th at the Presbyterian Church for a tureen dinner.” Even in its infancy, the YorkLeicester Towners demonstrated its values of fellowship among seniors and consistent opportunities for developing and maintaining friendships with each other.

The York-Leicester Towners now meet on the first Wednesday of each month at noon, and these meetings often include such activities as a dish-to-pass luncheon, a business meeting and a speaker or entertainment. The group also holds a tureen dinner once a month. It also maintains annual events. The York-Leicester Towners hold a chicken BBQ in August. They also attend York Central School District’s breakfast for district seniors, which began in 1991, as well as the turkey dinner which the York United

Presbyterian Church has put on for them since 1975, both in November. Finally, the YorkLeicester Towners gather together for a special meal each December.

During its 45 years, the yearly membership fee has changed from $1 to $2, remaining quite the bargain. Membership fees are put to good use, reducing the cost of members’ tickets for trips to events and places like the Lancaster Opera House, Geva Theater and other planned trips.

The group pays a portion of the cost of its August chicken BBQ as well as purchasing some of the food for its December meal and purchasing kitchen, office and other supplies.

Membership money is also used to pay for entertainment at some of the monthly meetings.

When additional funds came their way a few years ago in memory of Glenna and Don Popp, the York-Leicester Towners purchased a bench for the Leicester Park gazebo.

The York-Leicester Towners also seek to support their fellow seniors whether in the group or not. Each February, the group members nominate and vote for a Senior Citizen of the Year, one for Leicester and one for York, as part of a program run by the County Office of the Aging. The nominated seniors do not have to be members of the York-Leicester Towners.

Responsible for overseeing the current YorkLeicester Towners are its officers which include Louis Miller, President; Irene Sick, Vice President; Micki Fox, Secretary and Carol Griffin, Treasurer. This dedicated seniors group has given area seniors food, fun and fellowship for 45 years, and hopefully, it will continue to do so for many more years to come.

Olive oil is an unsaturated fat that is a much healthier choice than butter or saturated fats. When cooking with oil, do so in moderation.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: Have you heard of the 64-slice test for your heart? Would you recommend it instead of a stress test?

-- D.F. ANSWER: You’re asking about a CT scan of the heart. The use of multiple detectors allows the CT scan to get a very high-resolution picture of the heart very quickly. Modern 64-slice detectors can construct an entire 3-D image of the heart in five seconds under optimal conditions. The scan is excellent at detecting calcium in the arteries, which is imperfectly correlated with blockages in the arteries. However, by adding intravenous dye, blockages in the arteries can be detected with accuracy approaching that of a cardiac angiogram. Thus, for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease, a heart CT scan can provide information similar to a stress test.

However, a stress test gives information not only on anatomy, such as blockages, but on physiology as well. By measuring the amount of time someone can exercise, and the response of the heart rate to that exercise, the cardiologist can gain useful prognostic information, which is impossible to glean from an anatomic test like a CT scan or even a cardiac catheterization and angiogram.

The two tests are complementary, and we often obtain both.

So, it really depends on the goals of the stress test as to which is preferred. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have breast cancer that has metastasized to my bones. I know that there have been great strides in curing cancer at the original site but there doesn’t seem to be any work done to help when it has spread. Are you aware of any? I am 87 years old. -- L.L. ANSWER: Once breast cancer -- and indeed, most cancers -- has spread beyond its original location (metastasized), it becomes much more difficult to cure. However, there have been significant improvements in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer. Cure might not be possible, but a good quality of life for months or years is possible (half of women with metastatic breast cancer will live longer than two years). The exact treatment depends on the pathology and receptor status of the cancer, and a plan needs to be individualized by an experienced oncologist. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I normally go to the dermatologist once a year to get a skin check and follow up on some moles I had removed. Now the office recommends that I go every three months. What gives? -- F.M. ANSWER: I’m guessing your dermatologist is keeping a close eye on something he or she doesn’t like but isn’t quite worried enough to do a biopsy. I don’t want to second-guess your dermatologist.

When you go back, ask and find out. If you really dislike going so often -- perhaps because of copayments, inconvenience or having to take time away from work or family -- tell him or her so that you both can work toward a plan that is easiest for you but still allows the dermatologist to keep you free from skin cancer or other problems.

Two weeks ago, a friend was driving through a village when they were stopped by a police car, the reason being an air freshener hanging from her rear view mirror. She was given a ticket and fined $193. A lot of people including us and our friend didn't know that was a law. But why a ticket and fine for a senior citizen on a fixed income? Why don't they inform and let it go? This is so ridiculous, look around; there are a lot of people driving with a lot of stuff on their mirrors. Come on, law enforcement, find some

at the Pembroke Thruway: I just wanted to say on behalf of not only myself but the other staff and 5 individuals who were enjoying a dinner outing how grateful and shocked beyond words what you went out of your way to do for us that evening.

When the waitress informed us that all 7 of our meals had been taken care of, myself and the other staff that was with me just looked at each other in shock.

The waitress again assured us that all the dinners we ordered were taken care of. Whoever you are we just wish we could have personally thanked you for your generous and kind heart. Us 2 staff plus the 5 individuals from Genesee/ Orleans ARC had a wonderful time.

I received a camera traffic violation from NYC. Their Camera Division read the plate wrong and I was issued a violation.

I went to Batavia DMV, explained that I had to prove it was read wrong and the plate that I previously owned was destroyed.

With their assistance I got the violation dismissed. I was extremely impressed by the assistance and help I received while at the Batavia DMV. I believe her name was Leslie and a lady, whose name I didn't get, who worked behind a window, processing transactions. It's upsetting to receive a violation and need to fix a mistake. THANK YOU.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF CARE People often confuse “palliative” and “hospice” care, which are different services, but may be intertwined. While palliative care largely concerns itself with relieving pain and may be given along with curative treatments, hospice care focuses on a dying person’s last six months (or less) of life. Both have the goal of making the patient as comfortable as possible, but palliative care can also be performed for terminal and non-terminal patients alike. Thus, anyone can avail himor herself of palliative care, along with any other medications or treatments that may extend life or cure the disease, but hospice care is limited to terminal patients for whom curative treatments (such as chemotherapy) are no longer effective.

When faced with a loss, many confront the question with regards to funeral planning, “where do I start?” Typically the first decision to be made is that of burial versus cremation followed by choosing a traditional funeral or a memorial service.
