M any elements of vehicle maintenance become second nature to drivers once they have a few months of driving under their belts. Oil changes, routine checkups and periodic vehicle inspections can keep cars runn ing smoothly and safely on the road. But few drivers remember to maintain their headlights, a potentiall y dangerous oversight that can compromise the safety of drivers and their fellow motorists.

Penny Saver Pet of the Week Hi, my name is Zoey and I am 6 years old. I totally rule the roost in my house!! I have 2 humans and 2 dogs that I love to torment. I am told that I look like Grumpy cat without the endorsements and people love me even if they don’t like cats! I sneeze a lot because my doctor says that my nose is so small and pushed in, I just think I am allergic to myself! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

(585) 624-7522 D id you k now ? Digging into a delicious ice cream sundae can be heavenly on a w arm day. But such decadence sometime s comes w ith a price, most often in the form of a painful ice cream headache. Ice cream headaches occu r w hen the cold ice cream moves across the roof of the mouth and back of the throat. Scientists are not qui te certain w hat causes ice cream headaches, but some suggest that it involves cold ice cream temporarily alteri ng blood flow. This constriction and expansion of blood vessels can cause pain. Once the body adapts to the c hange in temperature, the pain should subside. Eating ice cream slow ly can help prevent ice cream headaches.

PostBreast Cancer Exercise Pointers Surgery is often part of treating breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, doctors may recommend women undergo breast biopsies, lymph node biopsies or removals, lumpectomies, mastectomies, or breast reconstructions as part of their treatments. Surgery is often an effective way to treat breast cancer, but it does come with some side effects. The ACS notes that breast cancer surgery can affect how well women move their shoulders and arms, as pain and stiffness can weaken both areas. In addition, women’s ability to take deep breaths may be compromised after surgery, and they may have difficulty performing normal everyday activities like dressing, bathing and brushing their hair. Exercise may seem impossible after breast cancer surgery, but the ACS recommends women exercise after surgery to get their arms and shoulders moving again. The ACS notes that exercise can be especially important to women who underwent radiation therapy after surgery, as radiation can affect movement in the arm and shoulder long after treatment has ended. Regular exercise after radiation treatment can help women maintain mobility in their arms and shoulders. Exercising after breast cancer surgery can restore movement, but it’s important that women take into account the following pointers, courtesy of the ACS, before beginning a regimen. • Speak with your physician. Discuss exercise with your physician after undergoing surgery. Doctors may prescribe physical or occupational therapy, and some may even refer patients to cancer exercise specialists. Simply jumping back into your pre-surgery exercise routine can be dangerous, so bring up exercise immediately after surgery or during a follow-up visit. • Expect some tightness. Doctors may suggest women begin exercising a week or more after undergoing breast cancer surgery. It’s normal to feel some tightness in the chest and armpit after surgery, but the tightness will begin to subside as you exercise. Report any persistent tightness or pain to a physician immediately. • Some burning, tingling, numbness, or soreness may also occur. These symptoms may be felt on the back of the arm and/or on the chest wall and are often a result of the surgery irritating some of your nerves. The sensations of burning, tingling, numbness, and soreness may even increase a few weeks after surgery. But the ACS advises women to keep exercising through these symptoms unless they notice unusual swelling or tenderness, which should be reported to physicians right away. • Exercise after a warm shower. A warm shower may warm and relax muscles, making exercise less painful. • Dress appropriately. Comfortable, loose fitting clothing can make it easier to do exercises, as such attire is not restrictive.

Upcycling: Transforming the ‘Old’ into a Better ‘New’ Turn old or discarded furniture, cabinets and doors into fresh new creations through “upcycling” -- high-end “recycling” that reduces trash at landfills by refurbishing or repurposing existing pieces, often enhancing the value. Furniture or “yard sale finds”: These can be stabilized and given a new look through stain/paint or distressing, but some may also lend themselves to transformation for other uses, such as turning a chest of drawers into bookshelves, a chair into a swing, a dresser into a seat, and more.

Dorothy A. Dewey “Dot” October 3, 2017

The McFadden Family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to all who made the passing of our beloved Donnie a little easier; to Norma and Carl for their invaluable friendship and help with food prep and service; Pastor Cathy Fox for delivering a perfect memorial service, and to all the friends and family who brought food, music, and love.

Your support means so much to us during this difficult time. ARE THERE NO MORE TEARS? Time heals, they tell me, and it’s been nine years. After that, are we well, are there no more tears? It is easier, I have to say, but I can’t tell you that I’m okay. My precious Billy, blood of my blood, he was here, he lived, he laughed and he loved. No amount of time will change that fact. Nothing I can say will bring him back. So don’t roll your eyes when you see my tears. I’ll continue to cry, but I’ll be okay, when I take Billy’s hand, in heaven some day.

Love, Mom, Wendy, Tracy, Deb, & Steve

Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty

“A hunch is creativity trying to tell you something…” ~ Frank Capra Did you ever have a hunch…a strong but unexplained feeling that something was going to happen? Most of us have hunches but we probably never think of them as having anything to do with “creativity.” Whether instinct or intuition, hunches have probably been responsible for some weighty decisions over the centuries. The military genius of Napoleon, the financial wizardry of the Rockefellers…perhaps they were the result of creative hunches that shaped the form of history. We take pride in providing this community with an essential service, rendered in accordance with the highest ethical standards of our profession.

A GLORIOUS SEND-OFF A formal “visitation” provides friends and family of the deceased with the opportunity to pay their last respects and help them come to grips with their loss. This custom has roots in the Irish “wake,” which is the well-known tradition of giving the deceased a glorious send-off. While viewings once took place at the home of the deceased, today the funeral home is the preferred location, one or two days before the funeral. This viewing can be less formal than the funeral and provides family and friends with an opportunity to reminisce about the deceased loved one. To personalize the viewing, we encourage playing music and displaying photographs that were meaningful to the deceased. A funeral can and should be as unique as the life that is being celebrated. Personalizing a funeral or memorial service can be therapeutic--it gives you and your family something to concentrate on as you relive memories. It’s also welcomed by family and friends. To learn more about our services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. We invite you to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. With deep respect and honored to know an honest person with integrity, Rose Fudge, who kept her word. Karen A HUGE thank you to everyone that attended Tom Kretschmer’s Celebration of Life on August 26 and for those who made it happen. Tim Petrie, for donating the meat, supplies and your time. Monro Muffler for the food donations and for closing the Batavia shop a couple hours early so that everyone could attend. Darrell and his lovely wife, Jenn Olsen and Michelle Farina, thank you all for the food donations. We appreciate each and every one of y’all. The

evening was spent remembering Tom’s life, laughing, crying and reminiscing the many pictures that were shared. THANK YOU ALL for showing Tiny’s family and friends your support, but more importantly, your love and respect!

Thank you to everyone who came to my garage sale. As I had stated, 25% of the proceeds went to the Red Cross for hurricanes Harvey and Irma relief funds. The sale total was $212.25 and $6 was directly donated so I sent the Red Cross $60. Thank you!

constantly disrupted by the loud honking of the air horns of the trucks as ONE family’s unsupervised kids repeatedly beg for the drivers to honk! It goes on almost all day every day! People don’t appreciate the CONSTANT blaring of these air horns! Have some respect for your neighborhood and supervise your children!

To the person who shot my pet skunk! He was a BELOVED member of our family, and will be missed. Rest in Peace Stinky-boo-boo. We live in a residential village street that has large trucks up and down it all day due to a business at the end. Many families and senior citizens who reside here are

I recently visited the bottle return machines at my local grocery store at 1 p.m. on a Sunday. It was busy. I had two small plastic grocery shopping bags with less than a dollar’s worth of returns. There were two individuals at the machines - one had large three leaf bags full of cans and the other person had a cart overflowing with cans and bottles. They both looked at me with my small amount and just kept putting the cans in. I have let people go ahead of me before when they just have a small amount of cans/bottles. It is

Thank you to the Tops employee who waited for a riding cart and when one became available brought it to me in the pharmacy where I sat as I could not stand for any length of time. You really went above and beyond.

Many other countries have far WORSE things to have to live with daily. So embrace the American Flag and remember why there is one. Thank God for America! And God Bless and Protect ALL of Us in America! I personally PRAY TO GOD, EVERY DAY, for ALL of us IN AMERICA. Please join me.

If it wasn’t for The American Flag, NO ONE would have any rights to protest ANYTHING in America! Nor would ANYONE have any rights AT ALL in America. I love America, even with its good, bad, and ugly happenings; America is STILL the Best Nation for everyone, civilized people. But you MUST obey laws here as there are laws in all other countries, too.

just common courtesy to say, “Would you like to go ahead with that small amount?” There is supposed to be a limit for how many cans you can turn in at a time - but it is not enforced. Wish more people could just be considerate. I recently “won” a $600 grand prize. After 4 months of attempting and failing to gain further information and make arrangements for a trip that I would be interested in, I was informed that the deadline was today and I seemed to be limited to only 1 of 2 different sports venues, neither of which interested me or amounted to anywhere near $600. Needless to say the deadline is here and I am not interested in what little was offered so I will not be able to partake of my grand prize. Nice!?!??? I don’t understand why people leave upholstered furniture by the road,

especially with the rainy weather we’ve been having this summer. Don’t they know about the Penny Saver’s Give and Take? There are many people who would be happy to pick up decent furniture if they know it’s available for free before it becomes waterlogged sitting along the road. Or take it to the Salvation Army or the area’s ReStore locations which benefit Habitat for Humanity. Thank you for finally firing the program manager who was bullying and harassing the employees for 4 years. It’s not a healthy work environment and caused a lot of stress in their lives. The sad thing is that human resources had proof from many employees and chose to wait 4 years to fire he/ she. More info should be given to employees so no one has to go through this for so long. Word of advice, when there is proof REACT ASAP!

If you prefer circuit strength training where you exercise various muscle groups in one day, do not strength train on back-to-back days, leaving at least one day in between strength training sessions so muscles have ample time to recover.

Are expired medications still safe? It is 2 a.m. and that cough and stuffy nose you have been battling is still keeping you up. You reach for the nighttime cold relief medicine only to find it expired a few months ago. If you take a dose to ease your symptoms, will you be putting yourself at risk? This situation is a relatively common occurrence. Many medicine cabinets are stocked with over-the-counter drugs as well as prescription medications that may be past their expiration dates. It is a good idea to routinely discard expired medicines, but if you happen to take a drug that has passed its expiration date, you will most likely suffer no ill effects. According to the Harvard Medical School Family Health Guide, the expiration date on a medicine is not the dates when a drug becomes hazardous. Rather, it marks the period of time after which a drug company can no longer guarantee the efficacy of the medication. Since 1979, drug manufacturers selling medications in the United States have been required by the Food and Drug Administration to stamp an expiration date on their products. This is the date until which the manufacturer can still guarantee full potency of the drug. Expiration dates also may be a marketing ploy. Francis Flaherty, a retired FDA pharmacist, has said drug manufacturers put expiration dates on products for marketing purposes rather than scientific reasons. It doesn’t make financial sense to a company to have products on the shelves for years. Therefore, most drug manufacturers will not do long-term testing on products to confirm if they will be effective 10 to 15 years after manufacture.

The U.S. military has conducted their own studies with the help of the FDA. FDA researchers tested more than 100 over-the-counter and prescription drugs. Around 90 percent were proven to still be effective long past the expiration date -- some for more than 10 years. Drugs that are stored in cool, dark places have a better chance of lasting because the fillers used in the product will not separate or start to break down as they might in a warm, humid environment. Storing medicines in the refrigerator can prolong their shelf life. Although a pharmacist cannot legally advise consumers to use medication past an expiration date, most over-the-counter pain relievers and drugs in pill form should still be fine. Certain liquid antibiotics and drugs made up of organic materials can expire faster than others. For those who still want to err on the safe side, routinely clean out medications from cabinets once they expire. However, if an expired medication is taken by mistake, there’s little need to worry about potentially adverse effects.

ARPALER and Rochester Police Locust Club Honor Widows and Families of Deceased Officers By John Rabish The Association of Rochester Police and Area Law Enforcement Retirees (ARPALER) honored the memory of deceased law enforcement officers on September 15th at the Ridgemont Country Club. Families and friends gathered to recognize and celebrate the lives of their lost loved ones. A photo slide show was presented highlighting the lives of the law enforcement officers that have passed. This year’s deceased law enforcement officers that were celebrated included: Deputy Hawley “Lee” Knitter, Sergeant Robert Fisher, Officer Peter Walsh, Captain Harold F. Connor, Detective Louis Tacito, Officer Robert Turner, Captain George Reiss, Officer Donald Freeman, Assistant Chief Deputy James Wiesner, Sergeant Robert Kerr, Sergeant Dominic Felice, Lieutenant Carl Patricelli, and Detective Michael J. Chiello. Balloons were handed out to families to write messages to their lost loved ones and were then released into the heavens at the end of the luncheon program. ARPALER President, Joseph Cimino stated, “This event honors the men and women who served our community and also recognizes the sacrifices that their families made over the years. There is an everlasting connection we make with every officer and their families. It is a privilege to recognize them.” Rochester Police Locust Club President, Michael Mazzeo added, “We are fortunate in this profession because in law enforcement we have two families. Our own brothers and sisters in blue and their personal family members as well.”

585-624-5630 HOW TO BUILD A STRONG PROFESSIONAL NETWORK Ask around. Some individuals may hesitate to seek networking advice out of fear of appearing opportunistic. But successful professionals understand the need to network, so your colleagues will likely be glad to offer referrals if they’re in a position to do so. When receiving a referral, ask if you can use the person’s name, which should help you establish a connection during the introductory process. Resist the idea that using a colleague’s name when meeting a professional you hope to work with is something sinister, as the name will only help you with the introduction. Once the introduction has been made, it’s up to you to do the rest.

Lewis General Tires is looking for a Commercial and Passenger Tire Technician for our shop at 3870 W. Henrietta Rd.
