Fiery Corn Salsa Makes 2 cups 1/4 cup olive oil 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice 2 teaspoons minced fresh cilantro 3 tomatoes, seeded and diced 1-1/2 cups corn kernels 2 to 3 jalapeno peppers, seeded and diced Salt and freshly ground black pepper In a large bowl, combine oil, lime juice and cilantro. Add tomatoes, corn and jalapeno to taste. Mix well until corn mixture is well coated. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Onion and Apple Tart 4 tablespoons of (1/2 stick) unsalted butter 2 onions (about 1 pound), halved lengthwise and thinly sliced 2 teaspoons coarse kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Pastry dough for one 11-inch tart or 9-inch deep-dish pie 3 large eggs 1 cup heavy whipping cream 1 1/2 teaspoons ground nutmeg, preferably freshly grated 1 sweet-tart baking apple, such as McIntosh or Jonathan Special equipment: 11-inch fluted tart pan (1 1/8 inches deep) with a removable bottom Preparation 1. In large skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add onions, salt and pepper, stirring occasionally until soft, about 5 minutes. Reduce heat to very low, stirring occasionally, until onions are pale gold, about 20 minutes. Set aside to cool.

2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to a 14-inch circle. Fit dough into an 11-inch fluted pan with removable bottom. Trim excess to a 1/2inch overhang, then fold it back into pan to reinforce fluted edge. Using a fork, pierce bottom of pastry all over. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

3. Preheat oven to 400°F. 4. Place chilled shell on rimmed baking sheet and line shell with foil and pie weights. Bake until pastry is set and pale gold along the rim, 15 to 20 minutes. Carefully remove foil and weights and continue baking until shell is golden all over, 10 to 15 minutes.

5. Meanwhile, in medium bowl, whisk together eggs, cream and nutmeg. Stir in onions. Peel, core and thinly slice apple.

6. Remove shell from oven, pour egg mixture in, and arrange apple slices decoratively on top. Press apples to slightly submerge them. Bake until top is lightly browned, 25 to 35 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Caring for dentures improves oral health Proper dental care and oral hygiene is essential at all stages in life, even for people who have dentures, partials or implants. People with dentures must recognize that oral hygiene protects their dentures as well as their mouths.

According to the American College of Prosthodontists, 35 million Americans do not have any teeth, while 11 percent of the population requires the use of a complete denture. In addition, 5 percent of the U.S. population wears a partial denture. The Canadian Denture & Implant Centres says that 16 percent of the population wear dentures.

Removable dentures require care to keep them clean and in good repair. Servicing dentures also helps ensure wearers’ mouths stay healthy. Follow these guidelines to keep dentures clean.

• Handle with care. Dentures are strong, but they are not impervious to damage. Treat them with care while handling, being sure not to bend or damage any clasps when cleaning, and try not to drop the dentures. When handling dentures, Colgate recommends standing over a folded towel or basin of water for added protection.

• Brush daily. False teeth need to be brushed, so don’t trade in your toothbrush just yet. Brushing will help remove food deposits and prevent staining.

• Take a break. Remove dentures before going to bed and soak the dentures in warm water or special denture cleansers.

Removing dentures for six to eight hours allows tissue inside the

mouth to recover. Soaking helps to remove stains, bacteria and tartar. The Mayo Clinic notes that most dentures need to remain moist to keep their shape, so do not allow them to dry out.

• Clean your mouth. While dentures are removed, use gauze or a soft toothbrush to clean the tongue, palate and cheeks. If you still have any natural teeth, use a soft-bristled brush to cleanse.

Always rinse dentures before returning them to your mouth.

• Schedule regular dental visits. Dentists can advise how frequently to have dentures checked for fit and professional cleaning. Loose dentures can cause sores and infection, so it’s best to address any issues regarding fitting promptly. Dentists also will inspect the inside of the mouth for signs of disease or irritation.

• Eat healthy foods. Make sure to eat a well-balanced diet to keep the body and mouth healthy. Cut up hard foods like fresh fruits and vegetables if dentures are impacting your ability to eat these foods.

People of all ages rely on partial or complete dentures to maintain their smiles. Routine care is necessary to keep the dentures intact and mouths healthy.

On August 14, 2017 Stacie and Sunny Poromon and family hosted the second annual picnic for a group of Veterans that Stacie met on an October 14th, 2014 Honor Flight. Stacie was acting as flight guardian for Sam Centenni of Penfield as the group traveled to Washington DC. Sam was joined on the trip by his close friends, Sal Trippi of Fairport, Vincent Ilardo of Irondequoit, Fred Migliore of Irondequoit and John Coia of Rochester, all great men who proudly served our country. While in Washington, the Veterans had an opportunity to tour the monuments and spend time reminiscing. It is a great honor to be able to thank these men for their service.

Honor Flight Rochester is one of 130 established hubs in the national Honor Flight Network. The not-for-profit organization was created to honor America’s veterans for their sacrifices. The Honor Flight trip is offered free to all American veterans. They are currently filling flights

with veterans who served prior to 1964 along with veterans from any era who are suffering from catastrophic illness. The goal is to take every veteran who would like to participate and otherwise would not, or could not, take such a trip.

Veterans typically fly in the order their applications are received, however, exceptions are made to accommodate medical conditions. WWII veterans are given priority because of the challenges that many of our aging WWII veterans face.

The flying season is April to November.

With hundreds of local veterans currently in line, veterans who are interested are encouraged to apply to get the process started.

DEAR DR. ROACH: After a few months of stress eating, I have gained a lot of weight. People swear that the Paleo diet would help me lose weight and feel better. Do you recommend it? -- H.C. ANSWER: Most diets have good points and bad points, and work better or worse for different people. The Paleo diet is no exception.

The theory behind Paleo is that humans are best adapted to the diet that Paleolithic man ate 10,000 or more years ago, which was high in meat, with relatively large amounts of fruits and vegetables, and no grains or dairy.

I disagree with the theory on several points, especially that I think it is a fundamental misunderstanding of adaptation, in that there’s no guarantee that evolution produces a “best” adaptation, merely one that’s good enough. Paleolithic man ate what he had to to survive, not necessarily what was optimal for his health.

The part about the Paleo diet that I do like is its recommendation against highly refined grains and other processed foods. I don’t agree with the usual recommendation to eat so much meat. It’s important to remember that the meat Paleolithic man ate, until just before being eaten, was busily running away from him and did not have remotely the fat content of today’s supermarket meat. The nuts and vegetables available to modern man are vastly different from those available to Paleolithic man, according to a great talk from Christina Warriner. Finally, there is abundant evidence that preagricultural man, from many different societies, had atherosclerosis in the unlikely event he lived into his 40s. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In my late teens and early 20s, I suffered bad acne that resulted in scarring that is still visible now, even though I am in my 40s. I assume it will be visible for the rest of my life. My acne was cured when I took Accutane. Now I also suffer from ulcerative colitis. Even though I can’t make a direct connection as a side effect of Accutane, the symptoms of UC first showed shortly after I completed my treatments for acne.

Now that my children are entering their teens, is it possible for them to avoid my fate? Are acne problems like mine hereditary, or can they avoid the problems I experienced with proper hygiene? -B.B. ANSWER: Acne, familiar to almost all teenagers, is caused mostly by the bacteria P. acnes, but also by hormonal changes that affect the skin oils and cells, predisposing the skin to bacterial growth.

Hygiene has a limited effect on acne, with overwashing and oily cosmetics causing the most problems. Acne does tend to run in families, so your children are more likely to have worse acne than usual.

The association of ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease, with isotretinoin (Accutane) is intensely debated, with the most recent data and the opinion of professional groups generally that isotretinoin probably does not cause IBD. In a world, where so many have little to no respect for one another, it is so refreshing to have people like RANDY and MARK. They worked tirelessly on beautifying our neighborhood by cutting overgrown grass (people complained to town hall but they couldn’t care less and did nothing about it all summer long) and trimming trees entering our tract. They went above and beyond the call of duty. It was NOT their responsibility. Randy even trimmed around the street light in front of my home. Sad to say, some neighbor’s wouldn’t trim a blade of grass, to help another neighbor, if it were outside of their yard. Yet,

I know this seems like a frivolous thing to say thank you about, but a young boy recently opened the door for me at the library. I understand if you are opening the door for an older person, or someone with their arms full. But I however, had nothing in my hands and am a teenager. I really appreciate the little things people do, and am happy to see that parents still teach their children manners!

It’s nice to know that the world isn’t too far gone. Also, I thank anyone who has done any little thing that has made my day, and I hope people treat you the same!

Don’t assume that your ‘daytime running lights’ include your taillights. Even on many of the newer vehicles, the back end of your vehicle is NOT illuminated, unless you physically turn your DRIVING lights on. Cars in this morning’s fog were nearly invisible from behind; same thing happens in the rain and snow. EASY FIX? Drive with your lights on all the time, the cost of replacing them a little more often is more than offset by increasing your visibility and safety. Just because YOU can see doesn’t mean other drivers can see you, especially if their windows are dirty.

FAIRPORT “Over the Top: Honoring Fairport’s World War I Veterans” is a new exhibit at the Fairport Museum (18 Perrin St.) which commemorates the involvement of Fairport and Perinton residents, both military and nonmilitary, abroad and at home, in World War I. The exhibit, including information, photos and artifacts with a Fairport, Perinton, and Rochester connection from the collections of both the Perinton Historical Society and the Town of Perinton and its Historian Bill Poray, is especially relevant this year, as 2017 represents the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the U.S.’ involvement in “the war to end all wars.” The exhibit runs through October.
