On Friday afternoon August 25, on Avon’s Rt. 5 & 20, my leashed dog got away from me.

Many, many thanks to the drivers who slowed or stopped their cars and to the people who joined in to help catch him. Very Special Thanks to the gentleman in the white pick-up who held him in his truck until I reached him, and to the woman who carried him to my vehicle. Fortunately, my dog was unharmed. This is one story with a happy ending, and we are very grateful to everyone who made it possible!

request that the Horseback riders pick up after their horses, especially droppings left on the bridge. As dog owners we are polite to pick up after our dogs. It would be appreciated if the horse owners would also leave the trail as they find it.

On the 17th of August I left my purse in the cart in the parking lot of the Avon TOPS Market. A person found my purse and turned it in to the desk at TOPS. I want to thank that person very much. They called me from TOPS and I got my purse back. Again, thank you very much!

Sunday night, June 25th it was cold and raining. They were just dumped there. No box, no covering for warmth, and too little to know how to eat or drink without the mother cat.

Left to starve. Their eyes were hardly open, they cried and cried and were so scared! We got a dropper, special milk and a box with a soft blanket for cover and took them to the animal shelter. They took them right away and fed them and gave them loving care. Animals are God’s creatures, too, here on earth with us, trusting, depending on us to take care of them and love them and give them food and shelter. If you do not want your animals please take them to a shelter, don’t just dump them anywhere!

Rochester Lancers Celebrate 50th Anniversary

By Andrew Battisti The Rochester Lancers professional soccer club will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the team’s founding on Saturday, Oct. 7 with ceremonies kicking off at 6 pm. Fans are invited to join the celebration at a special dinner as many Lancer legends gather at the Italian American Sport Club (IASC) at 1250 Buffalo Road in Rochester, the birthplace of the Lancers.

The original Lancers made their debut in an international friendly game against Concordia of Germany at old Aquinas Stadium, which was later renamed Holleder Memorial Stadium, on May 30, 1967 and played in the American Soccer League through the 1969 season. The team moved to the North American Soccer League in 1970, saving the league from extinction, and won the NASL title in their first season in the league. The Lancers became the first U.S. pro soccer team to compete in the CONCACAF Club Championship, finishing fourth in 1972. Rochester, then coached by Don Popovic, also reached the 1977 NASL playoff semifinals against the New York Cosmos and Pele filling Holleder Stadium with a soccer record crowd of 20,005.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a retired engineer, and engineers like solving problems. I find that people have difficulty swallowing medications because swallowing a gulp of water is an unnatural act when compared with everyday unnoticed swallowing, and that people are taking too small a sip of water, so they feel the pills, which can trigger a gag reflex.

The solution is to swallow a large sip of water without pills to prepare the mind and body for the relatively rare swallowing process that will follow. Then, take a large sip of water and swallow with pills. -- R.E. ANSWER: As someone who has studied physics, if not engineering, the small sip of water lubricates the esophagus, so pills are less likely to be stuck.

I have always recommended a small sip followed by a large gulp, for a different reason from yours. As far as specific positions, some people seem to do better with chin up, others with chin down. Taking a pill with some food or applesauce (or something of similar texture) helps many people. Practicing with something (a breath mint or M&M) can help you find what works best for you. Tepid or even warm water helps some. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: A dear friend has been diagnosed with spinal stenosis. She’s 85. She tried a cortisone shot, with very short-lived relief, and physical therapy, to no avail. She’s been prescribed pain pills, which cause her to sleep more than you’d expect for her age. Her doctor seems to be out of options. I read about laser treatment for this area. Do you think this might help, or do you have other ideas? -- M.R. ANSWER: “Spinal stenosis” is the term we use to describe compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots by bony structures in the spine. This may be a result of arthritis, skeletal disease and many other conditions. One common finding is difficulty after walking, causing someone to want to sit or lie down. I often see people with spinal stenosis who lean over while walking, as though they are walking into a stiff wind. Many sufferers can walk for prolonged periods with a shopping cart, because the leaning-over position relieves the pressure on the nerves.

Surgery for spinal stenosis can be challenging, and in an 85-yearold, the risk of complications is higher. However, given her symptoms and lack of response to nonsurgical therapy, consulting with a surgeon may be appropriate. There may still be additional medical therapies she hasn’t tried before doing so.

I am not a surgeon, and only a surgeon can appropriately choose the tools for a given surgery. The health benefits of grandparent-grandchild relationships In the not-so-distant past, extended families were the norm, with multiple generations residing on the same street if not in the same house.

Today the family unit is largely an amalgam of different situations. The rise of two-income families has pressured parents into finding childcare situations. Quite often grandparents once again step in to offer guidance and support for youngsters. This can be a good thing for both the grandparents and the grandchildren.

Although a bevy of psychological research focuses on parentchild relationships, new evidence points to the benefits of the grandchild-grandparent relationship as well. Close relationships between these different demographics is often a sign of strong familial ties.

A study from researchers at Boston College discovered that emotionally close ties between grandparents and adult grandchildren reduced depressive symptoms in both groups.

Research at the University of Oxford among English children between the ages 11 and 16 found that close grandparentgrandchild relationships were associated with benefits including fewer emotional and behavioral problems and fewer difficulties with peers.

Adult and grandchildren alike benefit from relationships with their elders. Grandparents can provide a connection and exposure to different ideas while providing a link to family history and knowledge regarding traditions and customs not readily available elsewhere.

Nurturing grandparent-grandchild experiences may be easy for families where grandparents live in the same house or close by.

For others, it may take some effort. The following are some ways to facilitate time spent together.

• Schedule regular family reunions or get-togethers. Host or plan multi-generation events that bring the family together and expose children to various members of their family.

• Promote one-on-one time. Have grandchildren spend time with grandparents in intimate settings. Alone time can be good for both and offers each undivided attention. A meal at a restaurant or time spent doing a puzzle or craft can be interesting to both generations involved.

• Video chat when possible. If distance makes frequent visits challenging, use technology to bridge that gap. Send photos, letters and electronic communications. Tech-savvy grandparents can use Skype or Facetime to stay in touch and speak one-onone with their grandchildren.

• Share skills with each other. Either generation can play teacher to the other. Grandparents may have certain skills, such as baking, sewing or wood crafts, they can impart that may not be readily taught today. Children can help grandparents navigate computers, video games or sports activities.

Grandchildren can help grandparents feel younger, and grandchildren can learn new experiences from their grandparents.

Among the 207 majors included in the 2015 survey, students who earned bachelor’s degrees in early childhood education had the lowest starting salary, at just under $30,000. The average mid-career salary for early childhood education majors was $38,000, the second lowest mid-career salary of any major included in the study. Child and family studies majors had the second lowest starting salaries, earning an average of $31,200.

Rounding out the five lowest starting salaries were culinary arts ($31,900), child development ($32,200) and early childhood and elementary education ($32,300).

Child development majors had the lowest mid-career salaries, earning an average of $36,400.
