DEAR DR. ROACH: I went in for an annual examination with my primary-care doctor, and she had my blood tested at a laboratory. She told me that I have high potassium, 5.5, and had me retake it. I did, and the test came back with a much lower level of 4.3! What could have caused the level to go up so high? Was this due to eating a lot of avocado and yogurt? I was eating a whole avocado for breakfast and a yogurt with apple and peach. Should I be seeing a specialist to recheck it? Please advise what I should do. -- A.V.R. ANSWER: Avocados and yogurt are high-potassium foods, and peaches and apples are medium-potassium foods. Most people can take in high amounts of potassium without worry, since the kidney is very good at getting rid of potassium if the body doesn’t need it. I more often see low potassium levels, from poor intake or from medications, such as diuretics, which can cause the body to lose potassium. However, some people with kidney disease (especially severe kidney disease) need to carefully watch and limit oral potassium intake. By far the biggest reason for a potassium blood test to come out abnormally high relates to the lab itself. Samples that sit around a long time or that are shaken will have broken blood cells, which release high levels of potassium into the serum, causing false elevations in the lab. If you didn’t change your diet between the two tests, there is no reason to worry at all. Your primary doctor is the right person to see. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have chronic constipation, and have had this most of my life. I have used most of the bulking (husk) things that are out there. Nothing works for me. Years ago, I went to my doctor, and he said that I could use MiraLAX and use it for the rest of my life. It has worked! Now my new doctor wants me off of it, wants me to incorporate fiber into my diet. I already do this. Plus I drink a lot of water in a day. I start my day with 24 ounces of water every morning before anything else. Is there anything wrong with taking MiraLAX every day? I do not take the full dose. -- V.B. ANSWER: While I recommend non-drug treatments, such as increased water intake, high-fiber diet and exercise, as treatment for constipation, that doesn’t work for everybody. In that case, using a medication as recommended by your doctor makes sense. Polyethylene glycol (MiraLAX) is a generally safe treatment that works by increasing fluid in the bowel. It’s a good idea to use it as little as is needed to keep the stool from getting uncomfortably hard. READERS: The booklet on constipation explains this common disorder and its treatments. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 504W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to To view and order health pamphlets, visit, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. © 2017 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Winners of the rental economy There are a few benefits to renting. Renters are much more mobile: They can move to take a better job if the opportunity arises. And, more often than not, renting is cheaper than buying. If renters are disciplined about investing those savings, they can come out with more wealth than buyers. Plus, renters don’t lose their shirts in housing busts.

Genesee Valley Penny Saver’s Own Jenn Howe Helping to Build Spirits to Beat Cancer Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at U of R Noyes Memorial Hospital sometimes find surprise gift bags left for them by a kind stranger. A small blanket, a soft toothbrush for sensitive gums, lotion for dry skin - hardly treasures in ordinary life but all the world when a person is fighting with life on the line. A Dansville woman is behind these gifts, not just at U of R Noyes but as far away as Florida and the Carolinas. Jennifer Howe, a cancer survivor, is paying forward the gift of simple comforts that she remembers when she went through chemotherapy. “I remember getting a bag when I was going through chemo,” said Howe. “It had a notepad, a pen, lotion, antibacterial gel, it was so thoughtful. I thought ‘That’s perfect. That’s just what I needed.’ Now I’ve turned my craft room into a stockroom for comfort bags. I’ve lost track of how many I’ve done. I lost count at 60.” The items in the bags are purchased with the help of community donors. On Saturday, December 10th, Howe set out a table of comfort bags at Country Clipper Pet Grooming in Piffard and collected about $600. “The last woman I gave a bag to was so happy she cried,” said Teresa Easton, owner of Country Clipper Pet Grooming. “The people who receive these bags really appreciate it.” For Howe, December 1st marked one year since her first chemotherapy treatment. “I remember feeling so scared,” said Howe. “I was so thankful to get my bag. Now I try to bring that feeling to others.” To refer a name for a possible bag recipient email: Facebook - Cancer Comfort Bag Project To make a donation: Cancer Comfort Bag Project • 23 Spruce Street • Dansville, NY 14437

General Cleaning Tips… * Clean top to bottom. Obeying the laws of gravity is the key to avoiding cleaning in circles. * Clean as you go. When cooking, soak dishes immediately after use to prevent more work later. * Keep cleaners in your shower so you can clean yourself and your shower at the same time. * Stick to a schedule. Don’t stress out about missing certain items when things get busy; having a plan is the easiest way to organize tasks so you don’t feel pressure to get everything done at once.

1. Ball is different. 2. Arm is missing. 3. Sign is missing. 4. Cork is missing. 5. Hairdo is different. 6. Pocketbook is missing.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Jan. 28, 1777, British general John Burgoyne proposes an illfated plan to isolate New England from the other colonies by invading from Canada with 8,000 British troops. HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION Curtailing energy consumption is a great way for people to protect the planet’s natural resources and save money at the same time. Part of the difficulty with regard to reducing energy consumption is that energy plays such a big role in our lives. Smartphones and tablets have become must-have items, and these items, though not necessarily big consumers of energy, must be plugged in and charged. But individuals won’t have to unplug from their lives to reduce their energy consumption. In fact, there are several easy, non-invasive ways for everyday people to reduce their energy consumption. Reducing energy consumption does not require substantial sacrifice, but it can produce substantial savings and benefit the planet in myriad ways.

Invest In Your Kitchen Kitchen remodels are a safe bet when it comes to putting money into improving a home. Residents tend to spend a great deal of time in the kitchen, but a dated, poorly functioning kitchen can detract from the value of a home, even if the rest of the home is in good shape. It’s possible to recoup between 60 and 120 percent of your kitchen remodel investment, especially if the kitchen matches up well with the rest of your home. Homeowners should know that a deluxe renovation may not be necessary, as relatively moderate improvements can create a whole new look for a kitchen.

Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

REDUCE RADON IN YOUR HOME Testing can determine if radon is present in a home. Homeowners can rely on professional companies or purchase self-testing kits at home improvement retailers. If a test comes back positive for high levels, conduct a follow-up test before taking any measures to fix the problem. Unusual weather can increase radon levels. If repeat testing yields the same results, efforts to reduce radon levels are necessary. Homeowners must keep in mind that no two situations are the same and various techniques may be necessary to reduce radon levels in a home. Simply opening the windows in a home may not be enough, and many radon remedies require the skilled services of professional contractors who are experienced in radon reduction procedures. Homes can be fixed, but some instances may be best left to the professionals.

Your How seniors can simplify everyday tasks The ability to perform everyday tasks is something many people take for granted. But as men and women approach or exceed retirement age, many may start to struggle with chores and tasks they have performed for decades. Physical limitations are a common side effect of aging. But such limitations do not have to prove too big a hurdle for seniors to clear. In fact, there are many ways for seniors to simplify everyday tasks while maintaining their independence. · Embrace technology. Even the proudest Luddites cannot deny technology’s potential to make seniors’ lives easier. Seemingly simple tasks like shopping for groceries and vacuuming a home can be difficult for seniors with dwindling or limited mobility. But seniors with Internet access in their homes can order their groceries online and then pick them up in-store or have them delivered, saving them the trouble of walking around the store. With regard to vacuuming, autonomous vacuum cleaners have removed the need to use traditional vacuum cleaners. Certain autonomous vacuums employ sensors to detect dirty spots on the floor, and these vacuums can even be programmed to clean the home while residents are out of the house. · Upgrade bathrooms. Tasks associated with personal hygiene also tend to be taken for granted until they become difficult. But a few simple bathroom alterations can help seniors safely navigate the bathrooms in their homes so they can maintain their personal hygiene without fear of injury. Grab bars can be installed on shower walls so seniors can safely get in and out of their showers and bathtubs. Such bars are both effective and inexpensive, and some do not even require any drilling to install. Specialty grab bars, tub grips and tub transfer benches are just a few additional products that can make bathing easier for seniors who have lost or are starting to lose some of their physical strength. · Get “smart” on the road. Seniors who are experiencing mild

difficulty driving can make getting about town that much easier by plugging their smartphones into their vehicles or making use of the various apps that have become standard in modern vehicles. For example, the maps app on a smartphone can be connected to a car and direct seniors to their destinations, saving them the trouble of remembering all the ins and outs of how to get a particular destination. Seniors also can employ apps to help them find their vehicles should they forget exactly where they parked in crowded parking lots. Such apps can increase seniors’ comfort levels on the road while helping them maintain their independence. · Downsize. Whether downsizing to a smaller home or simply downsizing a lifestyle, seniors may find that living smaller is akin to living simpler. Empty nesters may find they no longer need several bedrooms in their homes, and moving into smaller homes can reduce their daily workloads while also clearing out clutter that can make performing everyday chores more difficult. Men and women accustomed to hustle and bustle may also find that cutting back on professional and/or personal commitments gives them more energy for everyday activities while enriching the commitments they continue to maintain. Aging men and women can employ various strategies to simplify their lives and maintain their independence well into their golden years.

Here is what happens when you decide to donate locally: The Lima Food Pantry was able to provide healthy food baskets to our pantry clients at Thanksgiving and Christmas. 55 households at Thanksgiving and 71 households plus gifts for children at Christmas were served. This happens when you give so generously thru work, church, Scouts, Veterans, Golden Agers and individually to the local food pantry. We say “Thank You” for all donations received this year. May your New Year be blessed. Sincerely, Lima Food Pantry Clients and Volunteers I was so flustered when my power wheelchair fell off the lift on the back of my SUV while coming out of the Tops parking lot, that I didn’t get the name of the kind gentleman or the name of his company truck, to

thank him properly for helping me right the chair and get it back on the lift. When you saw it happen, you even followed me to a spot to help me get it back on. Kudos to you, and I WILL pay your kindness forward. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to the person, who found my son’s wallet on Jefferson Ave. in Fairport on 12/12/16. It’s good to know that honesty/integrity still exists. My faith in humanity gets a boost, but more importantly, we are humbled by your kindness! The HFL Transportation Dept. enjoyed creating a float for the Honeoye Falls Fire Dept’s annual Christmas parade and would like to thank the community members who made our float extra special. Thank you to Judy & John Recktenwald for loaning us their hay wagon and to Jen & Ryan Kenny for assisting us in borrowing the wagon. Thank you to our “live toys” on the float: Carlie Dussett, Reese Dussett and Cooper Banser and to our “elves”: Chase Banser, Heidi Banser and Dalton Mazzo. Thank you all for being a part of our holiday spirit parade float!

Commandments: “Thou Shalt Not Steal.”

Our school’s grounds and building are in dire need of repairs. Pavement is horrible. And don’t even start on the ground next to the bus loop, or sidewalks. Shame on you voters, school board, and administration. Have more pride, I do! To the person or persons who stole my lawn mower! “Really?” You prowled around in the night like a thief. I have been taking care of my lawns for fifty years or more. I loved it. We bought this mower a few years ago, four to be exact. It had an electric start to make it easier for me. You broke my heart. Yes, I left it outside. We had a garage sale that day and the garage was full of “stuff.” Never had to worry about people stealing. You must have been at my sale, how else would you know where it was? You have put the fear into my neighbors. You are a threat to seniors. It’s called “Elder Abuse.” You probably don’t know anything about the 10

Our family lives in a local town which has a pizza shop on almost every corner. Once a week we have a take-out night of a medium cheese and pepperoni pizza and a small order of chicken wings. We go between two favorite pizza shops. How is it every week the price changes by $2-$3? Why is it when we request a splash of extra sauce on our pizza it’s an extra dollar?! Not fair! On a very recent night we picked up our order, brought it home and it was not edible. The crust was black on the bottom and the wings were dry and undercooked. We called and spoke to the manager. He would not give a refund or a credit. He said his pizza and wings were perfect. When we pay close to $30, why not just do the right thing? What happened to customer service? It’s too bad - we were good customers. To all you people who speed: 60 is the new 40 DOES NOT APPLY TO MPH (miles per hour). It is a nightmare pulling out of my driveway; please stop beeping your horn at me. If you were going the speed limit this would not be a problem. FYI the solid yellow line means NO PASSING!
