Your Potential long-term expenses to account for in retirement Retirement planning involves more than just investing in a 401(k) and/or IRA. Individuals who hope to live comfortably in retirement must account for various expenses, including those associated with their health. A 2013 report from the U.S. Senate’s Commission on Long-Term Care found that each year an estimated 12 million adults in the United States require some type of long-term care. Planning for the following potential expenses can help men and women ensure they will have enough money to live well in retirement. • Housing: Many individuals would prefer to spend their golden years living in their own homes. However, adults who can no longer take care of themselves and/or their homes may need to move. Homeowners who simply want to downsize may be able to finance their transitions to retirement communities by selling their existing homes. But those who need to move into assisted living facilities may find that even selling their homes might not provide enough capital to pay for such residences. According Genworth’s 2016 Cost of Care Survey, the annual cost of assisted living facilities greatly varies by state, with costs as high as $65,550 in Massachusetts and as low as $30,438 in Missouri. Whether they invest in long-term care insurance or develop another plan with their financial advisors, men and women must consider ways to finance potential housing costs in retirement.

• Maintenance: Homeowners who want to stay in their homes in retirement must also factor potential maintenance costs into their retirement plans. Aging men and women may no longer be capable of maintaining their properties in retirement. Consider the potential costs of landscaping, home maintenance and maid services when making a retirement plan.

• Transportation: Diminishing vision and slower reaction times compel many retirees to give up driving. But retirees who still enjoy getting out and about will still need a way to get around. Moving to a retirement community with daily shuttle service to • Renovations: Home renovations are another potential cost in and from town centers is one way for seniors who no longer retirement. Aging men and women who can no longer drive to get around. But men and women who do not want to comfortably navigate staircases but are otherwise healthy may need to renovate their homes to account for their limited mobility. move to such communities will need to find alternative means Such renovations might include the installation of a staircase chair of transportation, the costs of which can add up quickly. lift and/or a ramp connected to the entryway of a home. Some Financial freedom in retirement is a goal for many working may even need to convert a first-floor den or living area into a professionals. DID YOU KNOW ? Before saying “ so long” to yard w ork at the end of autumn, homeow ners should remove thatch from their law ns. Thatch is dead grass that’s often identifiable by its yellow ish tint, and this dead grass, if left to loom in the law n over the w inter, can block air and moisture from making its w ay into the soil. That can make it difficult for a law n to recover come the spring and may even c ost homeow ners a substantial amount of money to address w hen w inter finally skips tow n. W hen removing thatch, resist the temptation to rake w ith lots of physical force, as raking too hard can harm the law n. Instead, commit to three or four easy passes w ith the rake, as this w ill collect the thatch w ithout damaging the law n. M any people rent a dethatcher from a nearby law n and garden supply store, and suc h a devic e c an make the process of removing thatch much easier. How ever, be sure to clean the machine before using it on your law n, as there is no w ay of telling w hat c ondition the previous renter’s law n w as in w hen heor she used the device. Failing to clean the dethatcher can spread disease from a previous renter’s law n onto your ow n, and that can prove another costly mistake come the spring w hen your law n is looking to rebound. If seeding the law n in early fall, w hich can be a great time to reseed, remove the thatch before laying dow n any new seed. If you w ait to remove thatch until after you have laid dow n new seed, then the law n likely w on’t benefit from the seed and you w ill likely just rake the new seed aw ay w hen it comes time to remove thatch.

Shingles Vaccine Can Prevent Complications --DEAR DR. ROACH: My boyfriend, who is in his 60s, got the recommended shingles shot a couple of years ago. Three weeks ago, he got a very bad case of shingles. It went from the front of his stomach, along the left side, to the middle of his spine. He has huge blisters, a red rash, pain and no appetite, and he constantly sleeps. The doctor put him on a regimen of valacyclovir. He was told to keep the area moist to avoid cracking and pulling of the blisters and rash. I thought that if you got the shingles shot, you wouldn’t get the shingles, or at least you’d get only a mild case. His has not been a mild case. The doctor told him that the shot just gives a false sense of security. If so, why get the shot? -- D.H. ANSWER: I disagree with his doctor; it isn’t a false sense of security so much as it’s an incomplete sense of security. No medical treatment is 100 percent effective, and that includes vaccines. Even the best vaccines don’t work on some people, or can’t be used, which is why having a large proportion of the population vaccinated is so critical for a really infectious disease, like measles. In the case of shingles, the vaccine prevents about 50 percent of shingles episodes from ever occurring, and it might keep others from being worse. (As an aside, it’s possible that your boyfriend’s case would have been even worse without the vaccine, but there’s no way of ever knowing for sure.) What might be the most important reason of all to get the vaccine is to prevent the dreaded complication of shingles -post-herpetic neuralgia. The rate of post-herpetic neuralgia in vaccinated people who still get shingles is 67 percent lower than in nonvaccinated people. It’s not a perfect vaccine, but it’s a lot better than no vaccine. Its downside is seldom more than a redness at the injection site or a sore arm, and it has never been shown to transmit the virus. Post-herpetic neuralgia, on the other hand, can be exquisitely, disablingly painful and can last for months. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a twitching of my left eye. My face draws up when it happens. I went to a doctor and he gave me 15 Botox shots around my eye and said I will need them every three months. They help some. Can you tell me what it could be? -- F.G. ANSWER: This is a special type of dystonia, a movement disorder, called blepharospasm (blef-a-row-spasm). It’s an involuntary contracture of the orbicularis oculi muscle, which goes around the eye. Other muscles may be involved, giving your face the “drawn up” appearance. The botulinum toxin the doctor injects you with partially paralyzes the muscle, preventing the spasms, but the toxin wears off. The condition is common, but in most cases is mild enough or intermittent enough that such powerful treatments aren’t needed. In a few cases, surgery is required. You can get more information about blepharospasm and other dystonias at *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The changing season brings new experiences as well as challenges for the ever-adventurous Aries. Your social life expands, as do the opportunities at your workplace. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) That recent period of uncertainty has passed. You now can now feel more confident about making decisions, especially those that relate to an important personal relationship. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although you might be faced with a number of tasks on your to-do list, try to take time out to enjoy the arts. Music, especially, can be soothing to the sensitive soul of a Gemini. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A disagreement with a colleague or friend is best resolved with open and frank discussion. Trying to force the other party to see things your way is bound to backfire. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) That Leonine pride might be ruffled by a colleague’s challenge to one of your pet ideas. But stop growling and listen. You could learn something that will work to your advantage. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone in authority might decide to select you as a candidate for a project that carries more responsibilities. Be prepared to show why you’re the right choice for the job. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) That new workplace problem should be dealt with as soon as possible. Leaving it unresolved for too long could lead to an even more unsettling and time-consuming situation. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might have to do some fancy juggling to keep both your work responsibilities and personal obligations on track. But ultimately, you’ll work it all out, as you always do. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might hear some upsetting things about a situation in your life. But don’t be swayed by talk. Demand proof before making any decisions on the matter. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don’t risk depleting those precious energy levels by taking on more tasks than you can realistically handle. Also, remember to ask for help when you need it. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) It might be difficult for the Aquarian who is used to giving advice to take counsel when offered. But it’s a good idea to listen to what trusted friends feel you should know. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Things might be a little unsettled as you move through a period of reassessment. But once you get your priorities sorted out, you should be ready to tackle an important decision. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re able to achieve a happy balance in your productive life by never feeling overwhelmed or underappreciated. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Thank you to Sandy's Salon, Stone's Countryside and Churchville Family Restaurant for donating gift certificates for bingo prizes at our recent Senior Citizens of Riga (SCOR) annual picnic. With your help our first Bingo Bash was a huge success! It's local businesses like you that realize the importance of our seniors to the community and your act of kindness toward brightening their event was most appreciated. DH Eisele, SCOR VP

Our Town mowed our lawns and hung our Flags in preparation for you to come by the hundreds to enjoy the FREE Fireworks by the water. We contribute year around to the Fund so that all can enjoy. And what do you do for US? You left your Darn Dirty Baby Diapers on the side of the road that we mowed for you to come and see the Fireworks.

Thank you to the very nice gentleman with a kind heart from Avon who called us in regards to the scooter we needed. He was so kind to give us one. We picked it up Friday and are so pleased with it. Prayers were answered and word cannot express our gratitude. May God bless you ~ JR and SR I want to thank the three guys that stopped to help me when my motorcycle caught fire August 24th on Rt. 33. To the driver of the white car...: The orange cones at our assisted living home in [local town] were not in our parking lot for you to take. We were blocking parking spots while setting up tents for our Chicken BBQ for our residents' family members. You have some nerve taking them in broad daylight directly in front of the workers setting up the tent. You were so sure of yourself that they assumed you worked for our agency. How about bringing them back? I think how Superintendents are placed in schools should be

changed. Why is it that the school board gets to pick the Superintendent and not the employees who actually have to work with them? Too often the Superintendent surrounds themselves with yes people and not the people who actually

Stafford Fire Dept. also responded. It was a total anyhow, but no one got hurt. Thanks again. Ken D Kudos to all the local Rotary Clubs for the wonderful festivals they organize in our towns each year. So many of the festivals we enjoy very much are put on thanks to the hard work of Rotary Clubs as well as the volunteers and support they enlist. Thank you so much for making our communities such fun places to be!

have to function under the rules and commands of this person. I believe that there should be elections held and the community gets to place the Superintendent they choose. Furthermore it should not be a permanent position. Maybe have elections every few years to give someone an opportunity to oppose the present Superintendent... Too often when in a position like this it is too easy to become somewhat of a dictator and dismiss the needs and concerns of those who work for you. Just some thoughts... Just want to say [local city] is becoming a real joke. What’s

with not having "Summer in the City," but we can have Christmas in the City when it's 10 out and of course the beer festival that's only for the drinkers? In a city

A big thank you to the man who paid for lunch for my daughter and me on September 10th at the Town & Country Restaurant in Batavia. That was so nice of him!

this size, we should be able to have summer festivals; places smaller than ours do. Maybe instead of paying people to water $1000's of dollars’ worth of hanging flowers, they could use that money to have a fun summer event. Get with the program. The "Summer in the City" drew big crowds, and it was fun for all family members. I hope the BID or City Council reconsiders having this event again. It is mid-August and at least 1 retailer, probably more, has

Christmas trees and decorations up for sale in the front of the store. Can't you let us enjoy the summer until at least Labor Day?????? Why does the Christmas selling season seem to arrive earlier each year? It is no wonder people are stressed out by the end of the holidays.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway Loss Data Institute, roughly 10 percent of all highway deaths involve large trucks. Braking capability can play a role in such deaths, as the IIHS notes that loaded tractortrailers take between 20 and 40 percent farther than cars to fully stop. That discrepancy is even greater on poorly maintained roads or roads marked by adverse conditions such as ice, rain and/ or snow. While 16 percent of the roughly 3,600 people who died in large truck crashes in the United States in 2014 were truck occupants, more than four times that many people (68 percent) were occupants of cars and other passenger vehicles. That’s because large trucks typically weigh 20 to 30 times more than passenger vehicles, meaning occupants in cars and passenger trucks are incredibly susceptible to serious injury or death should they get in accidents with tractor-trailers and other large trucks. Time of day also must be considered when examining large truck crashes and fatalities. While 17 percent of deaths in 2014 took place between the hours of noon and 3 p.m., that figure dropped to 11 percent between the typical rush hours of 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Properly m aint ained headlight s vast ly im prove driver saf et y Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

~Jim Bishop Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

The transparent haze which rests upon the mountain-top at noon,— the calmness in the air, and the clearness of the sky, now have a most mysterious influence upon the heart. The “still small voice” of nature makes us thoughtful; and seems to invite us to think upon the swiftness with which our days are passing away. How often at such an hour, have I been startled by the beating of my own heart! And the sunsets of Autumn,—are they not gorgeous beyond description? more so than the brightest dreams of poetry? ~Charles Lanman, “The Dying Year,” 1840

I step outside and the chilly air tightens the skin on my bare arms. Summer has ended all too quickly, and some of the leaves on the trees have already started to burn with the colors of fall. Fall colors.... so bright and intense and beautiful. It’s like nature is trying to fill you up with color, to saturate you so you can stockpile it before winter turns everything muted and dreary. ~Siobhan Vivian, Same Difference
