Grilled Radicchio and Brussels Sprouts with Hot Bacon Dressing Serves 4 HOT BACON DRESSING: 4 slices thick-cut bacon, chopped 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 3 tablespoons water 1-1/2 teaspoons sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon white pepper 1/2 teaspoon celery seed RADICCHIO AND BRUSSELS SPROUTS: 1 pound (about 20 sprouts) Brussels sprouts, halved, rinsed and patted dry Olive oil, for brushing 2 heads radicchio, halved, rinsed and patted dry 1 red onion, cut into 1/4-inch thick slivers 2 ounces crumbled cheese, such as feta, blue or goat cheese Prepare a hot fire on one side of your grill for indirect cooking.

For the dressing, fry the chopped bacon in a medium skillet until crisp. Add the vinegars and water and heat until boiling. Lower the heat to medium and add the sugar, salt, white pepper, and celery seed, stirring well for about 2 or 3 minutes until the sugar dissolves.

Set the pan aside and keep warm.

Place the Brussels sprouts in a large bowl and lightly drizzle with olive oil and toss. Place the Brussels sprouts in an oiled grill basket or grill wok. Set it on a baking tray.

Lightly brush the cut sides of the radicchio with olive oil and set on the baking tray, too, and take out to the grill.

Set the grill basket filled with Brussels sprouts directly over the fire. Toss the sprouts every few minutes and grill until they are tender when pierced with a fork, about 10 to 15 minutes, then move the basket of sprouts to the indirect side of the grill. Place the radicchio, cut-side down, over direct heat and grill until you have good grill marks, about 4 minutes.

To serve, arrange the radicchio and Brussels sprouts on a platter. Sprinkle with the onion and spoon the Hot Bacon Dressing over all. Serve at once.

On July 23, building 6B at Finger Lakes Manor in Canandaigua began collapsing into itself. I want to thank Tim T., Tim, Wayne C., Will M., and William from FLM who are all new to the management team as of July and sincerely tried to rectify a horrible situation as fast as they could. Thank you to the movers Jim, Rondell, Juan, Doug, and AJ who did a fantastic job (moving company from Rochester). Thank you to Dr. Yates who euthanized my cat, Buddy, of 14 years very humanely. Thank you for Dr. David Peter, who performed emergency surgery on me.

Thank you to my best friend, Beth North, and my sisters, Chip Griepsma and Betty Wilhelm, all of whom kept me sane and stable during the 21⁄2 weeks. I’m grateful to God, who is so faithful.

Linda Griepsma Recently one of our granddaughters was visiting from Spain. After visiting her other grandfather, who was dying of cancer, she mentioned that the only thing he wanted to eat was a root beer Popsicle.

They couldn’t find any in the area. I mentioned that I thought Tom Wahl’s would have some syrup that they

heard, I may be mistaken, bookkeeping that was not done right. Now we have to pay for mistakes? Not right. I’d like to know about this issue more.

But hey every time you call the office no one answers, you leave a voice message or your email and it takes them a long long time to get back to us. Not right. Or they don’t get back to us at all. There should be some accountability regarding them.

Every time we have a concern the town takes a long long time to answer. I shouldn’t have to beg them to call us. We pay their salaries through taxes and they are public servants who should be getting back to this in a timely fashion. Not only that they upped the water bill and I want to know why. There was I

I am one of the many dedicated garden club members who work hard to make [local] gardens beautiful for your enjoyment. This week while adding some new flowers I had to work around and smell fresh dog droppings and incredible to me, a diaper with human excrement inside tucked under the hostas. We

would sell her to make them (she had a recipe). I called them and they said that they did indeed have the syrup but went even further and offered to MAKE the Popsicles themselves. I picked them up the next morning and delivered them to her dying grandfather.

He was thrilled and enjoyed some of them before passing away this past Tuesday. Thank you Tom Wahl’s!! What a wonderful thing to do. Special thanks to Julie.

All I ask is that you behave like responsible adults, bring a bag to pick up after your dog and please do not be so crass as to leave human excrement for others to dispose of. You must stand and wait for your dog to defecate so you do know the dog has done his business; there is no excuse for not picking it up.

It seems as though you have too much time on your hands! You have already called the authorities 3 times! Each time nothing has been found of any animal abuse! It seems you have an anti-hunting agenda; I am sure these hounds get more

exercise then most house pets.

Especially during the hunting season. Which goes from October to March. Mind your own business.

To the people who decided to steal the plants out of the pots in front of my house and ripped my hydrangea right out of the ground! While you were doing that I was in the hospital watching my father die. I hope you sleep well, I won’t. You piled hurt on top of hurt.

When weight loss may be worrisome Dieting is a way of life for many people. The Boston Medical Center says an estimated 45 million Americans go on a diet each year, spending $33 billion annually on weight loss products. The figures are close to $7 billion in Canada. However, for one segment of the population - the elderly - weight loss can be a sign of something wrong.

The Mayo Clinic says that malnutrition is a serious health concern among seniors. Inadequate nutrition can result in weight loss that has far-reaching health effects. These include a compromised immune system, which increases the risk of infections, poor wound healing and muscle weakness that can result in falls and fractures.

Malnutrition also can lead to further disinterest in eating, which only compounds a weight loss problem. Weight loss and loss of appetite are common among seniors, particularly those with dementia. Learning to recognize weight loss signs in the elderly can help others act promptly to correct the problem.

According to senior care advocate and placement center A Place for Mom, the senior population is at risk of malnourishment for several reasons, including: · lack of energy to cook, · specific health conditions that impact ability to prepare or acquire meals, · lack of appetite attributed to decreased taste bud function or depression, · inability to afford quality foods, and · side effects of certain medications.

Unfortunately, malnutrition is a very common, yet widely undiagnosed, problem among seniors. If a friend or loved one has

visible bones under the skin; loose dentures; loose rings on fingers; has dropped clothing sizes; or is leaving food on his or her plate, they may be suffering from malnourishment. Concerned loved ones can take several steps to determine if their friend or family member is malnourished. · Observe loved ones’ eating habits at home to see how they are eating.

Routinely check the refrigerator and pantry to see which foods your loved one is eating. In a nursing home setting, check with a nursing administrator to see how mealtimes are going. · Speak with doctors to see if weight loss is a side effect of medications or another health concern. Bring up any concerns you have about malnutrition. · Provide finger food or easy-to-manage foods for seniors who have lost dexterity so they’re still able to feed themselves. · Encourage foods that are fortified with nutrients.

Supplementation with nutritional shakes can help fill the void. · Make meals social events so that the concept of gathering around the table for food is fun. · Mild or moderate exercise can stir up one’s appetite. Walking or chair-based exercises can help make people more interested in food. · Introduce new foods that can whet the appetite.

Weight loss can benefit some people. But among the elderly, weight loss may be a byproduct of malnutrition.

According to data reported to U.S. News & World Report from 711 ranked private universities (“ranked” schools meet certain criteria established by U.S. News & World Report), the average tuition and fees for private universities during the 2015-2016 school year was $32,599. Among the schools that reported their figures to U.S. News & Report, Vassar College in New York charged the most at $51,300, narrowly exceeding another school in the Empire State, Sarah Lawrence College, which charged its students $51,034 for the 2015-2016 school year. 2016 DEC Conservation Camp In 2016 the Springwater Rod & Gun Club applied for and received a grant from the National Rifle Association Foundation to send eleven to thirteen year old kids to the DEC Conservation Camp at Camp Rushford in Allegany County.The NRA offers grants to qualifying organizations to promote, advance, educate and encourage the youth to safely enjoy the shooting sports and other outdoor activities.

The DEC Camp combines environmental and sportsman education, outdoor fun and allows the youth to spend a week immersed in nature. Campers may take hunting and archery certification classes and learn canoeing, tree identification and other outdoor skills.

ROACH: I have seen articles in several publications over the years that talk about the dangers of flushing a toilet with the seat up, and all the nasty, germy things that come floating up on droplets of water. While it’s enough to scare one, when you think about it and all the public restrooms with toilets that have no seats (let alone not knowing the last person who used it), it’s a wonder we’re not all sick! I hope this is just misinformation or overblown facts. Can you address this issue? -- J.N. ANSWER: Mostly overblown facts, I think. A study did show that bacteria and viruses can be spread by water droplets around the area of a toilet with no lid (and presumably with the lid up).

However, these germs don’t go through intact skin, which is why we aren’t all sick. The key to not getting infected is handwashing after using the restroom. However, I think keeping your toothbrush a ways away from the toilet also might be a good idea, having read through the research. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Please tell me where I can find more information about the Mediterranean diet. -- V.P. ANSWER: The Mediterranean diet is not a single diet; it’s a collection of several cuisines that share some important elements and which have been shown to reduce rates of heart disease and obesity. Some common features are: mostly plantbased, with small amounts of meat; high consumption of fruits, vegetables and whole grains; low to moderate amounts of dairy products; relatively high amounts of olive oil, nuts and fish.

Wine is an optional part of the diet in low to moderate amounts and with food. The American Heart Association and the Mayo Clinic websites have more information about this diet, and your local bookstore will doubtless have some recipe books and cookbooks. If you don’t have a local bookstore, one large online site had 237 titles on this topic available when I looked.

There are many ways to eat healthy. I find the Mediterranean diet a great choice, but recommend a diverse diet for health and enjoyment. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My primary-care doctor hasn’t been able to answer this. What are the pros and cons of having shingles vaccine if one has genital herpes and is being treated with acyclovir? I’m in my 60s. -- A.A. ANSWER: The potentially confusing issue is that genital herpes is caused by herpes simplex virus II, which is in the same family of viruses as varicella-zoster virus, the cause of shingles.

However, the vaccine will have no effect on the herpes or its treatment, so you have the same recommendation as the average person, which is to get the vaccine. Anyone over 60 should have the vaccine unless there is a reason he or she can’t get it, such as having a serious immune system disease (like advanced HIV), being on medications that suppress the immune system or having recently had cancer chemotherapy. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. August 30, 2017 Springwater/Rochester: Phil was welcomed into Heaven on August 30, 2017. He was born on 7/1/1947. Phil was a master electrician with the Local 86. Predeceased by his grandson Trey Starks. Survived by his wife of 22 years Barbara Viruso and children; Philip (Dawn) Viruso, Kym Starks, John (Clarissa) Blakley, and Ben (Sandi) Blakley. Grandchildren; Ben, Sara, David, Michael, Reece, Erik, Billy, Nicholas, Gabby, Jonathan, Josiah, Mikayla, Harper, Chase, and Weston. Also survived by his brother Ken (Mary) Feicht, mother-in-law Nancy Nardozzi, sister-in-law Janice Osborn, many nieces, nephews, cherished family, friends, and his faithful dog Luke.

After living in Rochester for many years, in 2005 Phil fulfilled his dream and moved to Springwater, NY. He served on the Springwater Town Board, belonged to local rod and gun clubs, and Legion Post 905. He was a proud American. Phil loved the outdoors, hunting, riding his Harley-Davidson, and loved to travel. He loved Jesus, and served as an usher at Heart Cry Christian Fellowship.

A Celebration of Phil’s Life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23rd at 11am at Heart Cry Christian Fellowship, 7609 County Road 36, Naples, NY 14512. Please wear white or bright clothing as we rejoice his promised eternal life. Interment will be held privately at a later date.
