Exercises for people with arthritis Arthritis can make physical activity more difficult. In spite of that difficulty, exercise is an important part of staying healthy for men and women with arthritis. Even moderate physical activity can strengthen bones and muscles and increase joint flexibility, making it easier for arthritis sufferers to perform daily tasks.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, men and women with arthritis should commit to regular exercise that includes three types of activities: flexibility exercises, strengthening exercises and cardiovascular exercises. Consult a physician before beginning any exercise regimen, and discuss any limitations your specific condition might place on your physical abilities. Such limitations might diminish as your exercise regimen progresses, but it’s important to exercise within those limitations at the onset to avoid injuries. It’s also important to consult your physician should you experience a flare-up of arthritis before, during or after exercise. Such flare-ups might require you to alter your routine, and your physician can help with such alterations.

• Flexibility exercises: Perform flexibility exercises every day, as they will protect your joints by reducing injury risk. Flexibility exercises, which are often referred to as range-of-motion exercises, help your body warm up for more strenuous exercise.

Once you’re comfortable doing at least 15 continuous minutes of flexibility exercises, you’re likely ready to add strengthening and cardiovascular exercises to your routine. Many people with arthritis find yoga is an especially effective flexibility exercise, as

it strengthens and relaxes stiff muscles and even aids in weightloss efforts. Just don’t push yourself too hard when starting out with yoga, as the exercises are more difficult than they might seem.

• Strengthening exercises: Strong muscles reduce stress on the joints, something that’s especially helpful to arthritis sufferers. Strengthening exercises, also known as resistance exercises, build the body’s muscles so they’re more capable of absorbing shock and more effective at preventing injury to the joints. When performing strengthening exercises, you will use weight or resistance to make the muscles work harder and grow stronger. Isometric strengthening exercises tighten the muscles without moving the joints, while isotonic strengthening exercises strengthen the muscles by moving the joints. The Arthritis Foundation recommends performing strengthening exercises every other day and always in conjunction with flexibility exercises, which can be performed before and after strengthening exercises.

• Cardiovascular exercises: Walking, dancing, swimming and bicycling are examples of cardiovascular, or aerobic, exercises, which many people find the most enjoyable way to exercise.

Cardiovascular exercises make the heart, lungs, blood vessels and muscles work more efficiently while improving endurance and strengthening bones. Initially, cardiovascular exercises might be difficult for arthritis sufferers who have not exercised in a while. However, you can gradually build toward 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise three to four times per week, and you will notice your endurance improves the more you commit and stick to your routine. Include cardiovascular exercises as part of your larger routine, performing some type of aerobic exercise after strengthening exercises.

Doing so can provide the motivation you need and partners can serve as safety nets should you need assistance completing an exercise or suffer an injury and require medical attention. Personal trainers can serve as your partner, and many gyms offer discounts to seniors on personal training services.

Consider the arrangements and services offered. Some facilities offer single rooms, w hile others provide apartment-style living. M ost assisted living facilities provide a variety of services, such as housekeeping, laundry, exercise and w ellness classes, and social activities, for their residents. Investigate the offerings at each home you visit, looking for a facility that best suits your loved one’s needs.

Each year the Genesee Valley School Boards Association presents the Al Hawk Award which honors distinguished school board service. The award is given to a current or former school board member for outstanding contributions to public education and children in his or her own community.

This year’s award is presented to Rodney George and Bob DeBruycker, both members of the Avon Central School Board. In addition to their service to Avon Central Schools, both men also serve on other regional and state boards.

DeBruycker sits on the Genesee Valley Educational Partnership’s Board of Education and has served on the Genesee Valley School Boards Association. George serves as the Area 2 Director of the New York State School Boards Association. As Area 2 Director, George represents school boards in Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne and Yates counties.

George’s service to the Avon Central School District (ACSD) spans almost two decades. He’s served on the Board of Education since 1999, serving as President for 13 years. When asked why he serves, his answer is simple. “It’s an opportunity to give back to my community,” George said.

He has many memorable moments of his time in education; a few in particular help him remember why he gives his time. “When I hand the seniors their diplomas at graduation and see the look of accomplishment of their faces, that’s when I know the value of serving on this school board,” George said.

Like George, Bob DeBruycker serves because it’s his way of giving back to the community. His 15 years of service prove his commitment. “It’s so great to watch these kids grow and learn,” DeBruycker said.

but because he believes in the mission of the district, to create lifelong learners.

“In a small community like Avon, the school district is the hub. We give kids opportunities to help them find their path and achieve their goals,” DeBruycker said.

Witnessing students succeed are some of his greatest notable moments as a school board member. “When I attend graduations or award ceremonies and get to see the look of accomplishment of the faces of the students, that’s when I know our work has created opportunities for students to be successful. The district administration, teachers and staff do the work. The board leads the way,” DeBruycker said.

Thomas A. Cox is the Executive Director of the Genesee Valley School Boards Association. He noted each man’s contributions.

“Rodney George has provided consistent leadership that has lead to a stable board/ superintendent relationship that continues to serve the students, staff, and community of Avon CSD. Additionally, his work at the state level provides many advantages to NYSSBA and our region. Bob DeBruycker has dedicated countless hours to both the Avon Board of Education but also as a tireless worker in support of the Genesee Valley School Boards Association. His advocacy for all students is well known and Bob now has expanded his leadership efforts as a member of the GVEP Board of Education,” Cox said.

Can Anxiety Meds Cause Alzheimer’s?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I read recently that if Valium is taken by older folks for more than 90 days, it ups their risk for Alzheimer’s disease by 32 percent and if taken for more than 180 days, the risk goes up 84 percent. Have you heard anything like this? What is safe for seniors, or anyone, to take for anxiety? -- C.P. ANSWER: A study published recently ago in BMJ, a prestigious medical journal, showed a clear association between benzodiazepines -- a class of medications that includes diazepam (Valium), clonazepam (Klonopin), alprazolam (Xanax) and lorazepam (Ativan), among many others -- and Alzheimer’s disease.

The association was stronger for long-term use than for short, as you correctly point out. Further, the risk was higher for long-acting drugs (like Valium or Librium) than for short (like Xanax).

However, the type of study done cannot claim that taking the medication caused the increased risk of Alzheimer’s. The authors themselves point out that it is possible that early Alzheimer’s disease causes anxiety that is subsequently treated with prescription anti-anxiety medications, and that there is no causal relationship. It is also possible to see this result from chance, although the authors found less than 0.1 percent likelihood this result is due to chance alone. Finally, it’s possible that there is both a direct, causal link between taking benzodiazepine drugs and developing Alzheimer’s disease and that early Alzheimer’s causes some people enough anxiety that they are prescribed these anti-anxiety medications.

That implies that the risk is less than the numbers from the study.

A different study design may reveal the truth.

There are many good reasons not to use benzodiazepine medications, and I never prescribe them for long-term use.

Increased risk of both falls and automobile collisions are two that most concern me. (Multiple studies have confirmed this risk, so it is likely that these drugs do cause some people to fall and to have auto accidents.) These are also potentially habit-forming medications, and sometimes it becomes very difficult to sleep without them once they are started.

Because all medications have some risk, I recommend nondrug strategies for anxiety reduction. Meditation, mindfulness and imaging exercises, yoga and even regular exercise all have been shown to reduce anxiety without medication. Counseling and cognitive-behavioral therapies also are effective. If medications are needed, then SSRI medications such as sertraline (Zoloft) have lower risks than benzodiazepines. A huge thank you with appreciation to the honest person with the great big heart who received some cash in the mail that was meant for us. I’m writing about a dog, Alaskan Malamute, I believe was found running loose in [local] area dragging a cable run. Worried about it getting hurt we tied it under our shade tree in the front yard as we had company with 4 small pets inside. He was panting really bad and drank 3 bowls of water. We drove all over asking everyone we saw if they knew who it belonged to. No one knew, put the info on Facebook and left a message with [local] animal control. I went out to check on him and someone had untied the lead and had taken the dog without even a knock on the door or note stating they were taking the dog. You ought to be ashamed of yourself as we were so concerned on getting him back home safely and you didn’t

even have the decency to tell us you were taking him. Shame on you!

The fireworks at the north end of [local] lake were spectacular, viewing from [local] Park. When the display was over, I leisurely left the park in utter disgust with all of the litter that was left behind.

It’s unfortunate that people have absolutely no shame or conscience of leaving behind all of their trash. Such a beautiful park for all to enjoy for FREE that was decimated with litter was truly heart breaking to see. Please love your world, and be considerate for others who do. Please dispose your trash properly, and don’t litter.
