Realize energy savings with one simple step A simple project that will help keep your home cool this summer is topping up your attic insulation. This easy project will reduce your household energy consumption and will save you money on monthly energy bills. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit to work harder than necessary. Most attics are insulated, but many, especially those in older homes, are not insulated adequately enough. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay batts on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first or existing layer of insulation. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists: cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney. Insulation begins working the moment it is installed and lasts throughout the life of the building, which means one easy DIY project can provide years of savings.

And ANTIQUES

We are not to judge thrift solely by the test of saving or spending. If one spends what he should prudently save, that certainly is to be deplored. But if one saves what he should prudently spend, that is not necessarily to be commended. A wise balance between the two is the desired end. ~Owen Young

I walk at Lattimore Physical Therapy six days a week and have seen MANY patients being helped, but today I saw what physical therapy and determination can do! Back in March, I saw a young, handsome boy, whom I determined to be around the age of my greatgrandson (9) but now I know is a few years older, come into Lattimore on crutches. My heart went out to him and what I thought was a sports injury was a badly injured leg. Today, May 31st, I witnessed this young man stride, unaided, across the room on his way to the treadmill. My heart swelled with joy for him at his remarkable recovery! He’s a real poster boy for the merits of physical therapy!

I was employed by my employer for 25 years. The owner’s son purchased the company and relieved me of my position. “I get it” For the first time in my life I had to try and pursue a new career as a seasoned Office Manager. I am fortunate to have been directed to a local organization funded by taxpayer dollars. They have taught me how to create a resume, cover letter, interview skills and how to create a Linkedin account. Great tools! However, they do not offer training in the latest and most utilized industry software. WHY? This is what the job seeker needs. I have had some interviews and was considered as a prospective new hire only to be passed by due to lacking Power Point, Excel, & Microsoft. Why is that not part of training to obtain a new career? To the elderly person in the tan car on April 9th at 4pm, you hit my trailer as I was going east on [local] rd. You stopped for a moment but

then left. You did approximately $300 damage to my trailer and I have reported it to the police (there were 2 witnesses on the corner). You definitely have some damage to your front bumper at least. Please contact the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office so they can put you in contact with me. Thank you in advance for coming forward and not making me pay for your mistake.

While cleaning up trash for Earth Day, we found many large dog deposits in plastic bags along the creek and around the golf course. Please honor the earth and dispose of your dog’s messes properly. I’ve had it with your dog in this little hamlet: 6:10AM Easter morning your dog barking its head off. Sick of the noise your dog makes. You also let it do that around the time I go to bed. Next time I will not tell your dog to shut up, I will be calling the dog warden and the cops. Being a pet owner, if you live around people, have the decency to control your animal. You may care less now, but I am going to start reporting you to the town if your animal keeps on making a disturbance. Go out with your dog when you let it out and control it.

Volunteering as an older adult: How to find the right fit for your new lifestyle Many parents feel involving their children in volunteering at an early age can have a profound, long-lasting impact on their kids. But youngsters are not the only ones who can reap great rewards from volunteering, as studies show that men and women at, beyond or approaching retirement age also benefit greatly from volunteer work. Research from the Corporation for National and Community Service found that more than 20 million older adults contributed in excess of three billion hours of community service time each year from 2011 to 2013. The reasons why older adults volunteer are varied, but in its 2014 survey the AARP’s Experience Corps found that 97 percent of its volunteers indicated that their volunteer work with the organization gave them a sense of purpose. Older adults who want to volunteer but have little or no history with volunteering might not know where to begin with regard to finding the right opportunity. The right fit can make all the difference for volunteers and the people they help, and the following tips might help older adults as they look for an opportunity that best utilizes their skills and experience. · Know your schedule. Older adults who are still working but want to volunteer may have a firm grasp on their schedules, but even retirees should not overestimate how much time they have to volunteer. Before you begin to look for an opportunity, write down your commitments and daily schedule, using this list to determine how much free time you have to volunteer. Some opportunities require greater time commitments than others, so make sure you know just how much time you can devote to an opportunity before signing up. · Give due consideration to your experience. Older adults who

have retired or are on the cusp of retirement have a lifetime of experience they can use to help others. Imparting wisdom learned in your professional life can provide a sense of purpose and even make you feel as though you are still actively involved in the industry where you built your professional reputation. But life experience can also prove invaluable in volunteering opportunities. Mentoring programs give volunteers the chance to help young people, and such opportunities can involve more than just offering professional advice. · Don’t downplay the significance of certain opportunities. Volunteering opportunities come in many variations, and each is significant in its own right. Coaching a grandchild’s soccer team can have as significant an impact on the people you help as other volunteering opportunities. Volunteers offer their time because they have a passion to help others, and that help can be given in a myriad of ways. · Leave time for the rest of your life. Volunteering is a selfless act, and volunteers are the backbone of many successful charitable organizations. But older men and women should leave time for the rest of their lives as well. Retirement should be fulfilling but also include time for recreation, so don’t downplay how important hobbies are to you in an attempt to find more time to volunteer. No retiree wants to grow resentful of his or her volunteer work because it leaves little time for other pursuits, so do your best to balance your charitable endeavors with the other things in life that matter to you. Finding the right volunteer opportunity can make all the difference for older men and women who want to give back to their communities.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On July 2, 1964, President Lyndon Johnson signs into law the historic Civil Rights Act, which prohibited racial discrimination in employment and education and outlawed racial segregation in public places such as schools, buses, parks and swimming pools. It would help pave the way for the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Watch Out For This Common Skin Cancer DEAR DR. ROACH: I am fair-skinned and have had sunburns in the past, so I have been diligent about looking for rough, scaly skin patches that might turn into cancer and dark irregular patches that might be melanoma. But I had not read anything about watching for a pore that bleeds, heals and bleeds again. I have a place like that on my nose and just thought it was thin skin. There was no bump, no redness, no scaling; just occasional bleeding. Then it would heal and everything seemed fine. Now I find out from my dermatologist that it is basal skin cancer, it grows down into the skin, and I will have to have Mohs surgery to remove the cancer and plastic surgery to repair it. I want everyone to know to watch for this kind of symptom and get to a doctor immediately if they have it. -- W.R. ANSWER: A basal cell carcinoma is a skin cancer, probably the most common cancer in the U.S., and is most common among light-skinned people. It’s unusual in people with very dark skin. It is more common in men, and increases in frequency with age. As you note, sunlight is the major risk factor, although sunburns aren’t necessary to develop BCC. Use of tanning beds also greatly increase the risk for skin cancer, and I strongly discourage their use. BCCs can appear in several different forms. They often appear as a nodule on the face, with dilated blood vessels that can bleed and ulcerate (causing a shallow pit). On the trunk, they can appear as a superficial red patch. They also can appear as firm, deeper, scar-like lesions. Because they can appear in such a varied manner, ANY new skin lesion, especially in a light-skinned person with sun exposure, should be evaluated by a professional. Any nonhealing sore or one that periodically bleeds is particularly at risk. Although BCCs rarely, if ever, spread outside the skin, they can grow locally and be disfiguring. Once one has occurred, additional skin cancers are much more likely, so a periodic total skin exam by a dermatologist is essential. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I developed a ganglion cyst in the palm of my hand virtually overnight. Where did it come from, and how do I get rid of it? It’s very annoying. -- V.L. ANSWER: A ganglion is a cystic structure that is associated with a tendon sheath or joint. They most commonly occur in the wrist. It’s not clear why they occur: One theory is that they are from the tissue around a joint that makes joint fluid, the synovium. They often go away by themselves, but a surgeon can remove fluid from them with a syringe, and sometimes inject medication to keep them from recurring. Surgery is occasionally necessary for painful ganglia that keep recurring. I urge you to resist the advice you will get to whack it with a book (traditionally, a Bible). That can cause many small ones. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Add health screenings to back-to-school checklist An essential requirement parents must find time for is completing their children’s health screenings and immunizations so youngsters can return to school. Health screenings may include, but may not be limited to, routine physical exams, eye exams and dental cleanings. Each school district may have its own set of health requirements that must be met in order for children to attend school. Many schools require that children are up-to-date with all immunizations before they can begin a new school year. While the issue of vaccinations has inspired debate in recent years, parents should recognize that many schools will only exempt students from receiving certain vaccinations due to religious reasons. Students who have specific learning disabilities or medical conditions that require classroom modification should obtain recent documentation from any therapists or specialists prior to beginning a new school year. Doing so facilitates the process of setting up procedures within the school while ensuring children have what they need to excel in the classroom. All parents may want to ask doctors to provide copies of medical and immunization records so that schools will have the most recent copies on file. Parents should schedule eye examinations well in advance of the first day of school so they have ample time to fill new prescriptions for youngsters before school begins. This ensures kids won’t be starting off on the wrong foot because of vision problems that could already have been addressed.

THE HIDDEN BENEFITS OF WATER Water can help people maintain healthy weights. Dieting fads come and go, but water is a mainstay for people who want to control their caloric intake in an effort to maintain healthy weights. Water has zero calories, so reaching for a bottle or glass of water instead of a soda, lemonade or another caloric beverage can help people keep the pounds off. A study from researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center found that even diet soda enhances weight gain by as much as 41 percent. In addition, soda has been linked to conditions such as obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. No such association exists with water.

1. Taste Real Flavors The fruits and vegetables you buy at the farmers market are the freshest and tastiest available. Fruits are allowed to ripen fully in the field and are brought directly to you—no long-distance shipping. This food is as real as it gets—fresh from the farm.

2. Enjoy the Season The food you buy at the farmers market is fresh and delicious and reflects the truest flavors. As you look forward to asparagus in spring, savor sweet corn in summer, or bake pumpkins in autumn, you reconnect with the earth, the weather, and the turning of the season.

3. Support Family Farmers Family farmers need your support, now that large agribusiness dominates food production in the U.S. Buying directly from farmers gives them a better return for their produce and gives them a fighting chance in today’s globalized economy.

4. Protect the Environment Food in the U.S. travels an average of 1,500 miles to get to your plate. All this shipping uses large amounts of natural resources (especially fossil fuels), contributes to pollution, and creates trash with extra packaging. Food at the farmers market is transported shorter distances and is generally grown using methods that minimize the impact on the earth.

5. Nourish Yourself Most food found at the farmers market is minimally processed, and many of our farmers go to great lengths to grow the most nutritious produce possible by using sustainable techniques, picking produce right before the market, and growing heirloom varieties.

IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves shortand long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day.

Change your hours. When possible, explore flex time with your employer. Getting to work before everyone, or coming in later and staying after traditional hours can lead to greater productivity. There will be fewer distractions and less rush-hour traffic, and you can reap a greater sense of accomplishment. Consider working a weekend day and taking off during the week. Then you’ll have the added benefit of getting personal tasks done while others are at work.
