GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

Produced by special arrangement from Heuer Publishing LLC of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Plot Summary: Whodunit, howdunit. When famous actress Primavera Donna throws a party and winds up dead, it’s up to the guests to figure out who and how, and why the hired help is so annoying. Shades of Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie and Ten Little Indians. As the storm outside rages and the body count mounts, the guests must contend with interruptions, shocking revelations, tacky special effects, and the arrival of a mysterious visitor. Both the action and the dialogue are fast-paced and the surprising conclusion leaves only one question: Who gets the movie rights?

Springwater Voters:

Vote MARK HOPKINS for Town Council On Tuesday, November 7th, Springwater is holding an election for two members of the Town Council. This election is your opportunity to demand a change as to how this town is governed and taxed. This letter is asking all voters in Springwater to use your vote to elect MARK HOPKINS. MARK HOPKINS believes in community input in all town board proceedings and in a more transparent and responsible approach to the management of public money. Since 2012, at the start of the current Town Supervisor’s administration, the Town Property Tax in Springwater has increased over 25% - an effective annual increase of nearly 5%. That is more than 3 times the inflation rate for the same time period. How was this money spent? • For 3 years, the Board approved a $50,000 loan each year from the town’s General Fund to the Water District to cover cost overruns on the $800,000 filtration system update, with full knowledge that the Water District would not be repaying within one year as required by state law. • In 2016 over $36,000 was spent on park improvements plus a Town Hall sign and the Four Corners gazebo. The 2018 preliminary budget includes another $37,000 for the park. • In 2016 and 2017 a new $1,100,000 highway barn was built with a commercial loan and without any attempt to secure state grants. This loan, with interest, is being repaid with our tax dollars over some number of years.

What should we expect in the future? • The 2018 Preliminary Budget continues the same pattern of another increase over 3 times the inflation rate. This includes a 10% raise for Council Members, and an average 17% increase for the Supervisor and her personal clerk. • The Town Board approved a $3 million sewer improvement project. Supervisor Babbitt-Henry reports she has $3 million in grants. So, no worry. However, with a project of this magnitude, cost overruns should be expected. The sewer district is already paying back debt from the first sewer project. How will the sewer district, or the town, pay for additional costs not covered by grants? MARK HOPKINS needs your vote. MARK is the only candidate to oppose the status quo. He believes in community input and in a more transparent and responsible approach to our finances. Vote for MARK on the top line of your ballot. You don’t have to vote for two people. Vote for change and transparency. Vote only for MARK HOPKINS. Paid for by Friends of Mark Hopkins.

DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

The Town of Ossian has a contest for Town Council. We support Rhea Walker because she has participated in Town government for the past 15 years. In addition to serving as as Town Historian she is the Deputy Town Clerk and an election inspector. She spearheaded the organization of the Ossian Historical Society and now serves as it’s President. Her commintment and dedication to our Town is evidenced by her involvement, follow through and willingness to go above and beyond expectations. Rhea is now seeking your support for a town Council position. Please vote for her on November 7th. Thank you, Domenick and Ann Martello.

Appointment companions are a smart move Visits to a physician are just one step people make in an effort to improve their well-being. While it’s important that everyone visit their physicians at least once a year for a checkup, seniors may need to see their physicians more frequently than other age groups. When visiting the doctor, it is easy for anyone to miss important components of what the doctor is saying, and it’s just as easy to misunderstand certain instructions or medication information. Seniors who bring companions along to appointments with their physicians can reduce the risk of misunderstanding advice or diagnoses given by their doctors. Data from U.S. News and World Report states that about one-third of seniors still living on their own take a companion with them to their routine doctor’s office visits. Companions are typically spouses, but they can include children or other family members as well. Patients may find there are many advantages to bringing someone along to an appointment. And companions may want to learn more about patients’ goals at each appointment prior to going along so they can prepare and know how to help during the appointment. People are learning that bringing a family member or friend along to doctors’ appointments can be a smart way to make the most of doctor/patient interactions.

DEAR DR. ROACH: What’s the best way to obtain and maintain healthy, white sclera? Mine appears to be a light, offwhite gray. -- M.T. ANSWER: Sclerae -- the whites of the eyes -- tend to thin with age and reveal the darker-gray choroid underneath. This is benign and common, but I don’t know of any way to prevent or reduce it. Scleral color changes can happen with rare diseases like osteogenesis imperfecta, and some collagen diseases. The sclera also can change color as a result of scleritis (inflammation of the sclera), and this often happens in relation to Wegener’s disease or rheumatoid arthritis. The bottom line, though, is: If you are having no symptoms, it’s overwhelmingly likely that these changes are the benign form. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been diagnosed with positional vertigo. My doctor has me doing Cawthorne head exercises. Have you heard of these? Do they work? -- M.M.S. ANSWER: Vertigo is an abnormal sense of motion while still. Many people describe it as a “spinning” sensation, but others feel it differently. The most common cause probably is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, and rehabilitation exercises, such as the Cawthorne-Cooksey exercises, are very effective. Although medication is frequently prescribed, I recommend strongly against long-term use of medication, which can slow down or stop healing. Although you can do the exercises on your own, I recommend learning how to do them properly and safely with an occupational or physical therapist. READERS: The booklet on vertigo explains this disruptive condition in detail and outlines its treatment. Order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 801W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: How long do shin splints last? Is there anything besides ice that will make them go away faster? My left shin started hurting a little more than three weeks ago. I ran on it once or twice, then I stopped, but it still hurts. Is this normal? When do you think I can run on it? I did a longer run on a flat path, and normally I do it with hills, so I thought maybe that was the problem, but three weeks seems like too long. -- H.O. ANSWER: Pain in the shin bone (tibia) is common in runners, but the hard part is distinguishing between “shin splints,” properly called “medial tibial stress syndrome,” and a stress fracture of the tibia. A stress fracture usually has a discrete area of tenderness, but MTSS has more diffuse tenderness. An X-ray may be needed to be sure it isn’t a stress fracture, since the treatment is very different. A runner with a stress fracture needs to avoid impact activities like running, whereas MTSS usually gets better with just lower running mileage. In your case, the degree of pain is higher than I would expect after three weeks. I’d recommend an X-ray. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. 4 FOODS THAT CAN BOOST ENERGY LEVELS Diet can go a long way toward increasing or lowering energy levels. No one wants to consume foods that will make it harder for them to get through the day, so the following are a handful of foods that pack an energetic punch. 1. Cashews: Cashews, which are high in magnesium, help to convert sugar into energy. Magnesium deficiency can lead to low energy levels, so nuts that are high in magnesium, including cashews, can provide that mid-afternoon jolt that some people are seeking. Cashews are high in calories, so it’s best for those looking to lose weight or maintain healthy weights to adhere to serving suggestion guidelines. 2. Skinless chicken: A study from researcher Judith Wurtman of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Clinical Research Center found that alertness tends to increase when the brain produces the neurotransmitter dopamine and the hormone norepinephrine. Skinless chicken contains an amino acid known as tyrosine that helps in the production of both dopamine and norepinephrine. If skinless chicken is not available, other foods that may provide this same effect include fish, lean beef and eggs. In addition, lean meats like skinless chicken contain enough vitamin B to help ease insomnia. 3. Salmon: Omega-3 fatty acids can help the body fight inflammation, which has been linked to a host of ailments, including chronic fatigue. Salmon is also high in protein, which can eliminate the mid- to late-afternoon hunger pangs that can derail healthy diets and contribute to weight gain. 4. Beans: Beans are loaded with fiber, and that’s a good thing for energy levels. Like magnesium, which can also be found in beans, fiber takes awhile to digest, extending the energyboosting properties of foods loaded with fiber. In spite of the growing movement to eat and live healthier, many adults still do not include enough fiber in their diets. Men and women can consult with their physicians to determine how to make that happen, but eating more beans is a good start.

Your car might and to enjoy a quiet, peaceful take a bump but a bicyclist way of life. Everything from the hitting one of these could be schools to the local library has

been kind, courteous and more than welcoming. What I can’t understand is why the men (most 40+ years or older) find it appropriate to stare, holler, honk, wave and approach my 11 and 13 year old daughters?!?! This is not an isolated incident and has been an ongoing and extremely disturbing problem. My girls, who although raised in the city ARE NOT street wise and still are very innocent, are afraid to even sit on OUR own front porch alone! Shame on you! Stop harassing my CHILDREN. I ask you, how would YOU feel if the girl was your own CHILD?!

Getting the House Ready to Sell - Disconnect Your Emotions When conversing with real estate agents, you will often find that when they talk to you about buying real estate, they will refer to your purchase as a “home.” Yet if you are selling property, they will often refer to it as a “house.” There is a reason for this. Buying real estate is often an emotional decision, but when selling real estate you need to remove emotion from the equation. You need to think of your house as a marketable commodity. Property. Real estate. Your goal is to get others to see it as their potential home, not yours. If you do not consciously make this decision, you can inadvertently create a situation where it takes longer to sell your property. The first step in getting your home ready to sell is to “depersonalize” it.
