DEAR DR. ROACH: Ten years ago, I had many episodes of rapid heartbeats, diagnosed as atrial fibrillation. My cardiologist put me on a medication, which I took for a couple of years, but the A-fib came back. The doctor changed my medication to sotalol, but that didn’t help either. I read that low magnesium could be a cause of atrial fibrillation, and I started taking calcium, magnesium and potassium, and have not an episode of rapid heartbeat for four years.

I went back to my doctor, who told me it was a crazy idea. I haven’t seen him in four years. It seems a shame that we hear of so many treatments for A-fib when it might be stopped with a simple supplement. -- S.Z. ANSWER: Well, it certainly isn’t a crazy idea, but low magnesium isn’t the only cause of atrial fibrillation, and supplementing magnesium and other electrolytes will not stop atrial fibrillation in most people. However, low blood magnesium levels are a recognized risk factor for developing atrial fibrillation, and giving magnesium during heart surgery reduces the risk of developing A-fib afterward in some (but not all) studies, so there certainly is something to it.

Also, oral magnesium can make other medications for A-fib work more effectively. Since oral magnesium is safe and cheap, I think it is reasonable to try.

However, I am concerned because atrial fibrillation can go on in some people without their being aware of it, and the major risk of A-fib is blood clots. I would recommend that you continue to get evaluated periodically to make sure your heart rate is persistently normal. I also would try to find a physician who is willing to work with you on combining “alternative” treatments like magnesium with traditional therapy if needed.

Ridesharing keeps seniors on the move Losing the ability to drive and get around is one of the most challenging aspects of growing older for seniors. This loss of independence can result in loneliness, depression and isolation.

Often seniors have to rely on family to take them places, leaving them at the mercy of a friend or relative’s schedule.

Ridesharing services such as Uber, Lyft, Sidecar, and many others can fill the transportation void for older adults and help them regain their lost independence. Many traditional paratransit services (door-to-door transit, often limited to those over 65 and disabled) may be less convenient than ridesharing services, and it may be challenging to find a company that services rural areas.

Plus, reservations may need to be made a day in advance, with limited drop-off locations available. That makes it hard for seniors to make spontaneous plans, again taking away some of their independence. But flexible ridesharing services may provide the flexibility seniors are hoping for.

Connecting with ridesharing services requires only a cursory education in mobile technology. According to a recent report from the Consumer Electronics Association, 46 percent of senior households have smartphones and 40 percent have tablets. Many seniors are becoming more tech-savvy, meaning they have the wherewithal to navigate apps and websites that can connect them with a ride. And if they aren’t, a quick primer from a young friend or relative can stoke their confidence.

Before engaging a ridesharing service, seniors should familiarize themselves with how such services work and take steps to ensure their safety. · Many ridesharing services are linked directly to a credit card

Now that summer’s here, kids and families are going outside and being more active. We know it’s important to stay hydrated throughout the day. It’s tempting to reach for a soda or sports drink when you’re thirsty, but these beverages are loaded with added sugars. Is there a better beverage choice for you and your family?

Here is an interesting and surprising fact - the average American consumes 270 calories of added sugars each day. 1 That is more than 2 cups of sugar per week! Consuming foods and beverages high in added sugars are linked to increased risk for heart disease, overweight, diabetes, and tooth decay. How can we cut back on added sugars and still enjoy our food and beverages?

Almost half of the added sugars in our diets come from drinks - like sodas, fruit drinks, and other sweetened beverages.1 An easy way to reduce the amount of added sugars we consume is to rethink beverages. Try these tips to help you and your family make better beverage choices.

1. Drink water or seltzer instead of sugary drinks. a. Make water more exciting by adding slices of fruit or veggies like lemon, lime, cucumber or watermelon. b. For a quick, easy and inexpensive thirstquencher, carry a water bottle and refill it throughout the day. c. Get rid of the soda and sports drinks!

Instead, add a splash of 100% juice to seltzer for a refreshing, low-calorie drink.

2. Create a kid-friendly drink zone. a. Make water, low-fat (1%) or fat-free milk,

or 100% juice an easy option in your home. b. Have ready-to-go containers filled with water or healthy drinks available in the refrigerator. Place them in lunch boxes or backpacks for easy access when kids are away from home. c. Depending on age, it is recommended that children drink no more than 1⁄2 to 1 cup, and adults drink no more than 1 cup of 100% fruit or vegetable juice each day.

On Friday June 9th there was a silver alert sent out area wide for our mother/mother in law. Thankfully she was located at Toomey’s corners in East Bloomfield after missing for 9 hrs. We are so grateful to everyone involved in the search especially Monroe, Livingston and Ontario county sheriffs, U of R security, the attentive woman who noticed the specialized license plates and the employees of Toomey’s corners mini mart for their kindness and quick action to notify the authorities. She is safe and sound and no longer driving. So grateful for the kindness of strangers.

The American Legion Harrison-Lee Post 283 thanks Jeremy Bellinger who donated the use of a 43 passenger bus to the post for Memorial Day. His reason to donate was to support local military Veterans. This allowed the Post to safely get all their marching members and flags to 3 ceremonies in Livonia, Lakeville, and the Conesus Lake Nursing Home. All the members of the Post 283 Legion, Sons of the American Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary were extremely appreciative of the use of the bus.

Job entails order picking with electric pallet jacks as the primary tool, pallet stacking, and loading trucks. Must be capable of performing physical labor, lifting up to 50 lbs. Must be able to work early mornings or late nights and weekends. The schedule is a 4 day work week with overtime during the season.
