Elderly especially susceptible to the heat Many people might choose a nice, hot day over a blustery, cold afternoon. However, excessively hot days can not only feel uncomfortable, but they can also prove life-threatening.

Elderly men and women, in particular, are susceptible to the effects of hot temperatures.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people ages 65 and older are more prone to heat stroke and heat-related stress than those of other ages.

Seniors’ bodies are not able to adjust to sudden changes in temperature as quickly as younger people’s. A chronic condition that affects the body’s response to heat, as well as taking certain prescription medications also may play a role in seniors’ susceptibility to the heat.

The City of Sacramento Department of Parks and Recreation says that around 370 deaths from heat-related illnesses occur across the United States each year. Nearly half of those deaths are people who are 65 and older. Prolonged heat exposure can take quite a toll on the average person.

Factor in the more delicate health of many seniors, and the hot weather can be quite dangerous.

Further compounding the problem is higher energy costs.

Seniors living on fixed incomes may not be able to afford to turn on air conditioners because of the power draw.

There are different types of heat-related injuries, though heat exhaustion and heat stroke are the most common. Here are signs that a person may be experiencing one or the other.

Heat Exhaustion: weakness, tiredness, heavy sweating, paleness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, fainting, fast, weak pulse rate, headache, fast and shallow breathing Heat Stroke: extremely high body temperature (over 105 F), red, hot and dry skin, absence of sweat throbbing headache, dizziness, nausea What to do Friends or family members should check in with an elderly relative or friend when the weather is especially warm to ensure they’re safely handling the heat.

In addition, people of all ages can take the following precautions to keep cool when the temperatures rise.

• Drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages. Water and diluted fruit juices can help rehydrate the body quickly.

• Restrict physical activity.

• Take a cool shower or bath or wipe yourself down with a damp cloth.

• Seek an air-conditioned environment. For those who won’t or can’t turn on the air conditioning, visit a shopping mall or library to keep cool. Some towns and cities also make cooling centers available in extreme heat.

• Wear lightweight clothing.

• Try to remain indoors during the hottest hours of the day.

• Wear hats or use an umbrella to shield your head from sunshine outdoors.

• Eat cool foods, but avoid extremely cold foods. Otherwise you risk the chance of developing stomach cramps.

• Do not do laundry or turn on appliances that contribute to extra indoor heat.

The heat is nothing to take lightly, especially when it comes to seniors’ health.

Too Old for Back Surgery?

DEAR DR. ROACH: An MRI shows that I have spinal stenosis. I have not improved with chiropractic care, electrical stimulation, medication (including hydrocodone, tramadol and a pain patch), physical therapy or three spinal injections. After the third injection did not help, I told the surgeon I would need back surgery, but he said I am too old. I am 76. Am I too old? -- H.S. ANSWER: Spinal stenosis is a back condition in which the spinal cord or nerve roots are compressed due to bony abnormalities. The pressure on the nerves can cause pain, loss of reflexes and numbness. Spinal stenosis is most common in the lower back, but it can happen in the neck and mid-back as well. It is seen more often in people over 60 and is the most prevalent reason for back surgery in people over 65.

The MRI usually shows the compression on the spinal cord or nerve roots; however, the decision for treatment is made based on the symptoms, not necessarily how the back looks by MRI. You have had the recommended nonsurgical treatments, including several medications, physical therapy and injections.

Consideration of surgical treatment is reasonable.

When considering any therapy, the physician must consider the potential benefits and risks. The benefit of surgery is that it is more likely to relieve pain and improve function. There is a small risk of a serious bad outcome (death, worsening of pain or weakness). In general, the older a person is, the more risky the procedure. However, there is no absolute age cutoff of who can and can’t get the surgery. The overall health of the person is more important than age. Younger people may be a bit more likely to see better improvements in walking after surgery.

Back surgery shouldn’t be undertaken lightly at any age. Get a surgical opinion -- and probably a second opinion -- before making a decision. Only the surgeon, with access to your MRI results and having completed a careful history and exam, can make an informed recommendation about your personal situation.

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED TO TAKE PART IN ONE INTERVIEW TO EXPLORE THE WOMAN’S EXPERIENCE IN THE POSTPARTUM PERIOD FOLLOWING A CESAREAN SECTION DELIVERY. Who: Women 18 years of age or older, who have given birth by cesarean section. Volunteers must be at least 6 weeks postpartum, but no greater than 1 year from the day of delivery. Volunteers are needed from the following counties and towns: Genesee County Livingston County Ontario County Seneca County

Steuben County Wayne County Wyoming County Yates County

Where: Participants will be interviewed by the researcher at a mutually agreed upon time and location.

How long will it take: Interviews will take approximately 1-11⁄2 hours to complete.

Will I get paid: Volunteers will receive a gift basket containing infant care supplies.

How will my responses be used? Responses will be confidential. The comments will be utilized to understand the maternal self-care needs in the postpartum period following a cesarean section to enhance healthcare providers’ understanding of the maternal experience.

Car Lovers with a Cause Jim DiSalvo had a vision of combining a love for cars with the desire to give back to his community when forming the Good ol’ Boys Car Club in 1996. He set out to find others with the same vision and soon fifteen members gathered for the inaugural meeting of the club.

Interest grew rapidly and so did participation as the club ranks surpassed the 100 member mark.

Jim had envisioned a family-oriented social club and that is what the Good ol’ Boys Car Club has become. The group not only participates in car shows, parades and festivals but also organizes member dinners, movie nights and car cruises.

They are an active group who likes to have fun!

In addition to the social activities of the club, the Good ol’ Boys Car Club is also committed to the community. Each year they partner with the Council on Alcohol & Substance Abuse (CASA) to provide some classic transportation to and from the prom for lucky high school students who are selected as the winners of an essay contest sponsored by CASA. The contest not only has a really great prize but it also works to open the channels of communication between the students and their parents as they face the challenges of making good decisions when confronted with alcohol and drugs.

The group also pays visits to local VA Hospitals and the Livingston County

Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation to provide patients with the opportunity to appreciate some really beautiful vehicles.

This year the Good ol’ Boys Car Club will be joining the Mt. Morris Rotary Italian Festival on Sunday, August 20th for their 21st annual car show. In past years, members have selected local charities to benefit from their shows as proceeds from admission have been donated to Teresa House, Wounded Warriors, Honor Flight and have been used to assist with the decoration of graves for Memorial Day. If you are looking for some fun-loving people who enjoy cars from all eras this is the group for you! You do not need to own a car, just love them! Good ol’ Boys Car Club meetings are held at the Mt. Morris veterans Hall on the first Sunday of the month at 6:00pm and new members are always welcomed.

On July 6th I was picking berries with my sister in North Dansville when I took a bad fall in a woodchuck hole. I injured my left foot and could not stand on it. As my sister walked home to get the car I sat on the side hill and crept my way down to the main road.

Two very kind people stopped to see if I needed help. I sincerely want to thank the woman who got out of her car to talk to me and the young man in the bright yellow car who stopped and wanted to help in any way possible. These people are gems and they reinforced in me that you can extend kindness and help to others every day if you want.

My left foot is fractured and in a cast. I face surgery soon to correct the injury. I will remember the kindness of two strangers for a long time.

We are currently hiring a Service Department Manager. This position will oversee the entire Service Department. You will be responsible for customer interaction relating to scheduling & billing. This candidate must be organized and detail oriented, as he/she will be scheduling service work for the technicians, ordering parts, processing warranty claims and billing. This is a fast paced environment so it is necessary for this employee to be able to multi-task and prioritize. The ideal candidate has had at least 5 years experience overseeing a service department in the marine or auto industry and has knowledge in marine mechanics.
