The fire and EMT personnel were awesome. My bright side though was for the semi driver who repeatedly flashed his high beams at me warning us of a power line that was hanging down on our side of the road that was knocked loose by the accident. Thank God for him because it was just starting to darken and I doubt I would have seen it. There may well have been another casualty.

Hopefully you live in the area and are reading this knowing you saved another accident. He also helped others by staying there until fire and rescue arrived. May God bless you. I

I will admit to being a little nervous when the Avon PD showed up in my driveway last week, but when the officer asked me if I was missing anything, and then produced my Kindle, I was so happy! I had been tearing my house apart looking for it! Thank you so much to the person who found it in the parking lot of the Dollar General and turned it in to the police and thank you to Officer Matthew McFadden for tracking me down to return it! On June 28th I was at the McDonald’s Drive-thru in Webster when a very pretty lady and I assume her husband in a very green Sonic (cool car) bought me my lunch. I was

Sunday came along and it rained in the morning, but cleared in the afternoon. Yet, no one was out. No motorcycles, no people out walking, nothing. No one could bother sticking their noses out the door to see that it wasn’t raining! If it is cloudy or, heaven forbid, raining on the weekend, go outside anyway. Enjoy the lack of lawn mowers droning all day. Don’t let the meteorologists control your life!

my favorite thing and while I still have no idea how I lost my Kindle, I am eternally grateful for the wonderful people who helped it return to me!

I reminded her that we were told that even though the same dog chased us repeatedly while riding our bikes, she would not let us submit a complaint until we were chased 3 times. The Dog Warden gave the 3 time offender our phone number & name so that this dog’s owner could call us, which she did wanting us to drop the charges.

Recently, a neighbor’s dog came onto our property & when we filed charges, the dog warden sat in court with the offenders! The Dog Warden indiscriminately makes up the rules. She should be fired!

HOW TO KEEP CHICKEN FROM STICKING TO YOUR GRILL According to the grill manufacturer Weber, the keys to grilling chicken are temperature and time. But even cooks who have paid close attention to the temperature of their grills and the time their chicken spends over a hot flame have no doubt fallen victim to chicken that sticks to the grill. This can affect the quality of a meal and make post-grilling cleanup that much more difficult. To prevent sticking, Weber advises cooks to put a light coating of olive oil and seasoning directly on the chicken prior to putting it on the grill. Once the chicken has been dressed, make sure the grill temperature remains around 425 F to 450 F. Chicken will stick to a grill if the temperature is too high, so pay close attention to the temperature at all times. Once the chicken has been placed on the grill, allow each side to cook for roughly 4.5 minutes. If the chicken is difficult to flip or remove from the grill, close the lid and allow it to cook for one additional minute.

Your Behaviors that may help you reduce your risk for colorectal cancer Colorectal cancer is a formidable foe. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States. Colorectal cancer is similarly lethal in Canada, where the Canadian Cancer Society reports it is the second leading cause of cancer death in men and the third leading among women.

Some risks for colorectal cancer are beyond an individual’s control. For example, the CCS notes that a personal or family history of polyps in the colon, rectum or both significantly increases a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer. Lynch syndrome, a condition caused by gene mutations, causes polyps to develop in the lining of the colon, rectum or both. Since Lynch syndrome is inherited, there is nothing men and women can do to reduce their risk of developing it.

Research into colorectal cancer is ongoing, making it difficult for doctors to say certain behaviors or approaches are certain to reduce a person’s risk of developing the disease. But there are certain things individuals can do that might help save them from falling victim to colorectal cancer. · Get screened. The CDC notes that colorectal cancer usually begins when polyps form in the colon or rectum. If they go undetected, these polyps may turn into cancer. Screening can detect polyps early so they are found before they develop into cancer. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends colorectal cancer screening using high-sensitivity fecal occult

blood testing, or FOBT; sigmoidoscopy; or colonoscopy for men and women between the ages of 50 and 75. · Embrace physical activity. According to the CCS, people who are overweight or obese have greater incidence rates of colorectal cancer than those who maintain healthy weights. The CCS also notes that men with a high body mass index, or BMI, seem to be most at risk of developing colorectal cancer. · Limit alcohol consumption. The CDC notes that some studies have shown that limiting alcohol consumption may reduce a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer is a devastating disease, but men and women who embrace healthy behaviors may be able to lower their risks.

AN IN-DEPTH LOOK AT YOUR GUMS Periodontal (gum) disease, caused by the sticky film of bacteria known as “plaque,” is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. With this in mind, it is important to periodically check the health of your gums. To do so, the dentist or hygienist will measure the depth of the “gingival sulcus groove” along the gum line.

This measurement is taken with a probe that measures the depth of the groove between the teeth and gum tissue. While measurements of 1-3 millimeters (mm) are considered to be healthy, those over 3 mm may indicate that a pocket is forming, a sign of periodontal disease. Pocket depths over 6 millimeters are a sign of gum disease and the need for treatment.

Chances are that you or a family member has some stage of gum disease. While many adults develop some degree of gum disease as part

of the aging process, there are some steps you can take to prevent it. These include thoroughly brushing and flossing every day, eating nutritious meals and avoiding sugary foods, and visiting your dentist twice a year for a thorough cleaning and examination. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 90 years old and take many medications. I am having many different dreams at night. Can medications cause this? -- A.C. ANSWER: Pretty much whenever I get the question, “Can medications cause this?” the answer is “yes.” In your case, it’s very clear that some medications cause unusual dreams in many people who take them. Antibiotics, antidepressants, blood pressure medications and even sleeping medications can cause remarkable dreams. Some people hate this side effect; others enjoy it.

Knowing that medications could be causing them often is a source of relief.

I would caution you not to stop your medications suddenly or without talking to your doctor. You should go over your list of medicines and try to discover which are the most likely to be the source. Sometimes, a medicine can be stopped if the dreams are very bothersome. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 62-year-old man who likes to ride his bicycle for exercise. I ride on paved trails and streets, approximately 10 miles at a time with an eye on extending the length of my rides. I own a road bike, but currently I ride a bike that provides a more upright seating position. In either case, the seat is narrow and firm. My body is in a forward-leaning position while riding.

Should I be concerned with my prostate gland or any other body parts in that general area? I wear padded bicycle shorts when riding. I have annual physicals, and I am not aware of any problems. I do have an older brother who is going through radiation treatment for prostate cancer, and he used to ride to and from his work. His rides were not extreme.

I have read cautionary reports from the bike community about such things, but they seem to focus on the more exposed body parts. Lance Armstrong comes to mind in this regard. -- Anon.

ANSWER: There is research looking at three areas of men’s health with regard to cycling: prostate, sexual dysfunction and testicular cancer. The results suggest no or very small increased risk in prostate cancer or sexual dysfunction. However, some bike saddles and riding positions do put pressure on the nerves and arteries that supply the penis. Finding a comfortable saddle that doesn’t cause numbness, avoiding very long rides and standing up periodically on the pedals can prevent problems. Biking shorts help most people.

Although some early studies did link cycling with testicular cancer, most authorities now believe there is no such link. In fact, regular exercise reduces risk of both testicular and prostate cancer. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 73 years old, with osteoporosis and scoliosis. Can scoliosis be corrected? -- W.E.W. ANSWER: Osteoporosis is loss of strength of the bones, and scoliosis is a curvature of the spine. They may or may not be related. The osteoporosis should be treated, but the scoliosis usually does not need to be treated. Muscle strengthening exercises are important, and braces and injections may be used.

As part of the series, which is presented in collaboration with the Rochester Red Wings, the Eastman Museum hosted a screening of Bull Durham (1988) with writer/director and former Rochester Red Wing Ron Shelton in person on July 6 and will be offering a screening of Field of Dreams (1989) with writer/director Phil Alden Robinson in person on August 4.

In 2002, Soren began photographing a group of minor league draft picks for the Oakland A’s – young men coming into the major league farm system straight from high school or college. Since then, she has followed the players through their baseball lives, an alternate reality of long bus rides, on-field injuries, friendships and marriages entered and exited, constant motion, and very hard work, often for very little return. Fifteen years after that first shoot, Soren’s series and book Fantasy Life provides a selection of these stories, gathering together a richly textured series of photographs taken on the field and behind the scenes at games, along with commentaries by each of the players and memorabilia from their lives. Fantasy Life may be purchased in the Eastman Museum Store, and a book signing will follow the talk.
