DEAR DR. ROACH: About a year ago, I began to experience irritation in my left eye. It felt like there was a scratch or eyelash in it all the time. It became very inflamed. The other eye is affected, but to a lesser degree. All types of treatment for dry eye have been unsuccessful. Most recently I have been using a serum made from my blood. My eyes are red and weepy, and my left eye feels sore or achy at the back of the eyeball, if that makes sense.

I’m hoping that you might have some suggestion about treatment.

-- N.T. ANSWER: Dry eyes can be caused by many different conditions, and this is very prevalent in the population, especially in older individuals. Because many conditions can cause it, I can’t offer any one specific treatment, and it sounds like you have tried a lot already.

First-line treatment includes artificial tears, one drop four times daily. Preservative-free formulations may be helpful for some people, but they are more expensive. Gels and ointments may be more effective, but since they can blur the vision temporarily, they work best at bedtime.

It sounds like you are getting autologous serum tears, a treatment reserved for severe symptoms, such as in people with Sjogren’s syndrome, which causes the body to destroy its own tear glands.

A treatment you may wish to discuss with your ophthalmologist is placement of punctal occlusion, which blocks the drainage of fluid from the eyes to the nose. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a healthy 61-year-old woman. I take no prescription medicine or aspirin. I recently had a flu shot at a health fair, after which blood ran down my arm all the way to the elbow. I then had a tube of blood taken for a cholesterol check, and they had a hard time stopping the bleeding. I started drinking a small glass of red wine in the evening a few weeks ago.

Could the red wine be thinning my blood, or is this something I should see my doctor about? -- C.M. ANSWER: Although large amounts of alcohol can predispose a person to bleeding, a small glass shouldn’t affect bleeding much or at all. You should see your doctor, who probably will check your platelet count and go from there. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question about apple cider vinegar. I have heard that you can use it in small doses as an antacid. It seems to be a contradiction because it is acidic in nature. Is this true or just an old wives’ tale? -- C.V. ANSWER: Old wives’ tales sometimes contain great wisdom. In this case, however, there is no scientific data to back it up. There are many anecdotal reports of success and many theories why it might work. However, I’m a believer in evidence, not theories, and there just isn’t any. Further, vinegar can damage teeth, so if you try it, be sure to rinse carefully or use a straw. That being said, it’s unlikely to do any other harm, so it may be worth a try. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.

Fairport Museum Debuts “Timepiece Tales” “Timepiece Tales,” the new exhibit at the Fairport Museum (18 Perrin St.), features clocks of various types and sizes from the extensive collection of The Reverend Garth Brokaw, former President and CEO of the Fairport Baptist Homes. The timepieces on display are representative of the 150 he has accumulated over the past 45 years. This free exhibit runs through December 23.

At the time of the Revolutionary War, and for the next forty years, having a clock in one’s home was a luxury. Following the Civil War, clock building in the United States became one of the major industries, centered mostly in Connecticut, and lasted until about 1929. Those on display represent a time-period from 1780 until 1929 after which time clocks became more and more electrified.

Folks who collect clocks do so for various reasons. Some are interested in the mechanics of the movements. Others find different case configurations to be of interest. Still others are fascinated with time itself: how we keep time, why we keep time, what is time? Is it a natural or human made construct? How does time impact daily living? Brokaw’s collection began with his inheritance of several family clocks. Not being at all mechanical, his appreciation is in the artistry of the cases that house the workings of the clocks.

His continued fascination is how the progression of clock making relates to American history. This collection has been put together as an attempt to represent the progression of style and form over the course of 150 years as it relates to the progression of form and style in other aspects of American life, such as clothing and

architecture. The clocks tell a story, and the story is critically important to the fabric of who we are as family, community, and nation.

On Sunday, November 26th, from 2:303:30pm, and in conjunction with the “Timepiece Tales” exhibit, Brokaw will use the display and a few additional items to unwind the story of clock making in the United States. All are welcome to attend this free program - and to place bids on the Yuletide Traditions Silent Auction items, the annual fundraiser to support the Fairport Historical Society and Museum’s educational programs for youths and adults, exhibits, and artifact acquisitions!

For easy installation, homeowners and professionals alike recommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. Some benefits of growing older Many people are quick to think of growing older in a negative light.

Although there certainly are some side effects of aging that one may wish to avoid, people may find that the benefits of growing older outweigh the negatives.

Seniors are a rapidly growing segment of the population. In the United States, the Administration on Aging states that the older population — persons 65 years or older — numbered 46.2 million in 2014 (the latest year for which data is available). Statistics Canada reports that, in July 2015, estimates indicated that there were more persons aged 65 years and older in Canada than children aged 0 to 14 years for the first time in the country’s history. Nearly one in six Canadians (16.1%) was at least 65 years old.

With so many people living longer, it’s time to celebrate the perks of getting older rather than the drawbacks. Here are some great benefits to growing old.

• Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of youth give way as one ages, and older people have less negativity and higher self-esteem. A University of Basel study of people ranging in ages from 18 to 89 found that regardless of demographic and social status, the older one gets the higher self-esteem climbs. Qualities like self-control and altruism can contribute to happiness.

• Financial perks: Seniors are entitled to discounts on meals, museum entry fees, movies, and other entertainment if they’re willing to disclose their ages. Discounts are available through an array of venues if one speaks up. Seniors also can enjoy travel perks, with slashed prices on resorts, plane tickets and more. The U.S. National Park Service offers citizens age 62 and older lifetime passes to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites for just $10 in person ($20 online or via mail).

• Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brains simultaneously — something called bilateralization. This can sharpen reasoning skills. For example, in a University of Illinois study, older air traffic controllers excelled at their cognitively taxing jobs, despite some losses in short-term memory and visual spatial processing. Older controllers proved to be experts at navigating, juggling multiple aircrafts simultaneously and avoiding collisions.

• Less stress: As people grow older, they are able to differentiate their needs from wants and focus on more important goals. This can alleviate worry over things that are beyond one’s control.

Seniors may realize how little the opinions of others truly mean in the larger picture, thereby feeling less stress about what others think of them.

Growing older may involve gray hair or wrinkling skin, but there are many positive things associated with aging.

Behind the building you can find an upside down picnic table, an old garbage can, an old charcoal grill, and other items, but our lawn chairs are unsightly. Here there are no flowers, no mulch, a sign that is almost invisible, and a fenced-in dumpster that is long overdue for replacement,

Have to disagree with vent about people jogging and skateboarding in a cemetery. 99% of graves are not visited and no one is honored. We need to change attitudes about cemeteries and allow them to be used to encourage exercise and healthy living or we will all be in one before we know it. I would hope that the ground used to cover my dead body will be used for something beneficial to the living.

Livonia: Beloved Fred passed away suddenly at the age of 81 on Tuesday, November 7, 2017. Fred will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Survived by loving wife and best friend, Nadia, daughter Elizabeth Henderson (Dave), sons Chris (Theresa), Don (Kim), and sister, Natalie Castle (predeceased by George). Chief is also survived by his grandchildren Kathryn Gardner, Shannon Gardner, Heather Henderson, Bret Henderson, Lauren Gardner, and Julia Gardner.

Fred was a proud veteran of the US Army with rank of Captain. Dr. Gardner was a Full Professor at RIT and Associate Dean of the College of Continuing Education. In 1988, he received the distinguished Eisenhart Award for Outstanding Teaching. Following retirement from RIT Fred worked as Case Manager for Livingston County Counseling Services. He also authored numerous articles, a book on volunteerism and served as a longtime member of the Livonia School Board.

A Celebration of Fred’s Life was held at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 15 & 20A, Livonia, NY on Saturday, November 11th. In lieu of flowers we ask that everyone consider volunteering or donating to a local charity.

Fowlerville/Pahoa, Hawaii: May 25, 1924 - October 17, 2017, age 93 years. Predeceased by his spouse Bessie Schlegel Weaver, son-in-law Jesse Phelps, and grandson Robert Weaver. Survived by children; Emil (Paula) Weaver III of Brockport, Bonnie (Bill) Berkemeier of Bethany, James (Diana) Weaver of Greigsville, Helen Phelps of Lima, and Gary Weaver of Hawaii; 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Emil served our country in the US Navy from 1941-1945 during WWII. He served on naval submarines including the USS Finback, Nautilus, Drum, Halibut, Silversides, Tunny, and the Dolphin. Emil lived in Lakeville for many years, married Bessie Schlegel Weaver in 1943 and they raised their family in Fowlerville. He was a retiree of Eastman Kodak Company and in retirement years moved to Pahoa, Hawaii.

Friends may call on Saturday, December 2nd, from 1-3pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 15 & 20A, Livonia, where his memorial service will follow calling hours at 3pm. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Geneseo, NY with military honors.

A REASON TO LIVE Individuals with religious affiliations are more likely to have moral objections to suicide that prevent them from acting on suicidal thoughts. According to a survey of people suffering from severe depression, those who professed to have religious beliefs were both less likely to have suicidal thoughts than their non-religious peers and also less likely to give in to these thoughts if they did have them. There is also research that shows that religious countries tend to have lower rates of suicide than secular nations, while other research indicates that a higher degree of religious commitment is associated with less suicidal behavior. Clearly, subsisting within a religious context gives people more reason to live.

Survived by her husband of 63 years Albert “Bud” Clancy and children; Albert (Laureen) Clancy of FL and Cathy Clancy of WV; grandchildren, Patricia (Scott) Royals, Matthew (Katie) Clancy, Kari Clancy, and Clara Drake; great-grandchildren, Leighton and Liam Royals, Grayson and Aiden Clancy, and many other loving family & friends.

Kay was born on October 28, 1936 in Hornell, NY to parents Ellis & Nina Petteys. She attended and graduated from Canaseraga High School. In 1954 she married Albert “Bud” Clancy and this year they marked 63 years of marriage.

Kay was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She and Bud raised their family in Livonia where Kay also worked at the Livonia School District, Fisher’s Clothing Store, and West’s Grocery Store. Kay was a resident at the Livingston County CNR for the past six years as she struggled with dementia.

She was well loved by the kind and caring staff and the family is eternally grateful.

Friends may call on Saturday, November 18th, from 1-3pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 15 & 20a, Livonia, where her memorial service will be held following calling hours at 3pm. There’s also the risk of injury from collisions with pedestrians and snow plows. Plows and bobcattype devices can cause serious injury. Exercise caution when operating such machines.

In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Onion and Apple Tart 4 tablespoons of (1/2 stick) unsalted butter 2 onions (about 1 pound), halved lengthwise and thinly sliced 2 teaspoons coarse kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Pastry dough for one 11-inch tart or 9-inch deep-dish pie 3 large eggs 1 cup heavy whipping cream 1 1/2 teaspoons ground nutmeg, preferably freshly grated 1 sweet-tart baking apple, such as McIntosh or Jonathan Special equipment: 11-inch fluted tart pan (1 1/8 inches deep) with a removable bottom Preparation 1. In large skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add onions, salt and pepper, stirring occasionally until soft, about 5 minutes. Reduce heat to very low, stirring occasionally, until onions are pale gold, about 20 minutes. Set aside to cool.

2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to a 14-inch circle. Fit dough into an 11-inch fluted pan with removable bottom. Trim excess to a 1/2inch overhang, then fold it back into pan to reinforce fluted edge. Using a fork, pierce bottom of pastry all over. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

3. Preheat oven to 400°F. 4. Place chilled shell on rimmed baking sheet and line shell with foil and pie weights. Bake until pastry is set and pale gold along the rim, 15 to 20 minutes. Carefully remove foil and weights and continue baking until shell is golden all over, 10 to 15 minutes.

5. Meanwhile, in medium bowl, whisk together eggs, cream and nutmeg. Stir in onions. Peel, core and thinly slice apple.

6. Remove shell from oven, pour egg mixture in, and arrange apple slices decoratively on top. Press apples to slightly submerge them. Bake until top is lightly browned, 25 to 35 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
